Chandigarh a City in Rapid Transition by Jit Kumar Gupta (Vice-President of Indian Institute of Architects, Chairman Board of Studies (Architecture) Punjab Technical University, Member Board of Studies in Architecture of Punjab University, SMVDU. Member Academic Council, Sri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra) The presentation will be a journey of city of Chandigarh from the year 1950, when the city was conceptualized to the 2013, with regard to planning, development and management. The presentation will brief on the two master plans which went into making of the city. Basic principles of planning adopted in Chandigarh. Presentation will also brief on the rule of 7 vs. adopted in Chandigarh and the system of architectural controls which went into defining the architectural vocabulary of Chandigarh architecture. Presentation will also brief on the controls made applicable to regulate development in periphery of the city. Making of the capitol complex and the architectural features of the Capitol and the monuments which have been designed as part of the capitol. Presentation will also explain the problems city is facing in terms of growth and development including demography- slums, growth of informal sectors, both residential and commercial. Development beyond Chandigarh will also be explained. The presentation will conclude with the message and the lessons learnt from the planning of capital cities for both architects and planners.

Modern Architecture in India and Architectural Conservation & the Future of our Cities by Professor Jagan Shan (Director of the National Institute of Urban Affairs) The Role of INTACH in Conserving Built Heritage in India by Divay Gupta (Principal Director of the Architectural Heritage Division, Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH)) “INTACH plays a vital role in the listing, documentation and conservation of historic structures and precincts of architectural, historical and cultural value. Their team of conservation architects is working on projects nationwide for the conservation of heritage properties and mobilization of resources in this direction. The division undertakes a wide range of activities: - Listing or inventorying of heritage properties - Documentation and conservation plans for historic sites and buildings, heritage

gardens - Restoration of historic buildings and their adaptive reuse - Urban conservation, including new development within historical, cultural and/or
