Abstract

It is certainly true that north Cyprus and its capital Lefkosa have cross cultural and multi-cultural civilization

which has been formed throughout its rich history. The forward presentation is the comparison on the

restaurants and bars/ café of four important streets (LEMAR ROAD, DEREBOYU STREET, KAYMAKLI

ROAD, and METROPOL ROAD) in the new settlement area of Lefkosa to review and understand the Archi-

cultural and cultural translation footprint in this area. To achieve this goal, presentation adopted method of

analytical studies minor to major which started from analysis of each street’s restaurants and bars/cafe

under the three themes of visual analysis, social analysis and physical analysis to define the cultural and

archi cultural translations in them individually. To do this we divided visual analysis in to two main part which

consist of first of all design and material issues and finally spaces and elements and in the social and

physical analysis we conclude and debate on archi cultural and cultural translations issues in each street’s

restaurants and bars/cafe, furthermore with final conclusion we compare the conclusions of these four part

together to achieve general conclusion which show us the characteristics and pass of archi cultural and

cultural translations throughout new settlement area of Lefkosa.

Nicosia is the largest city of Cyprus. It is also called Lefkosia or Lefkosha by the locals and is the nation’s capital. Lefkosha has various types of restaurants serving a variety of cuisines plus great drinks. There are also places serving authentic Cypriot cuisine which some of these food has been influenced by different culture throughout history. Restaurants fall into several industry classifications including casual dining, family style, fast food, fast casual and fine dining that is based upon menu style, preparation methods and pricing. Restaurants of Lefkosha have changed during the time but all of these traditional restaurants have left their marks in the culture and architecture of modern Lefkosha, this means that most of restaurants of today Lefkosha have been influenced from culture and architecture of traditional restaurants of Lefkosha and traditional culture and architecture can be seen in the modern restaurants of Lefkosha. The people, the traditions and diverse influences a long period have formed a unique, rich and exciting culinary culture.

Kaymakly street is one of the important access road between main road to the Lefkosha and center part of city. As there are many administrative and commercial building in this street, most of restaurants are casual and fast food type.

Combination of modern and traditional material can be seen in the most restaurants.

In the most of the restaurants have been used low quality material which show less attention of the owners to provide comfortable seating area. it can be as the result of customers demands which almost use delivery services of these restaurants.

Social analysis:Certainly kaymakly street is the one of the most important access road between the main Lefkosa road and central part of the city, therefore users of the restaurants and cafes of this city divided in to three main part first the local people in the settlements around second the people who work in the offices and companies of the city and third the normal people who cross this road.

Restaurants and cafes in kaymakly road culturally provide the demands of three type of users those use the street. Therefore these restaurants are adopted with local cultures of Cypriot people who live their daily life in this street and the districts around. as the result of that we can find mostly fast-food restaurants and family restaurants which have delivery services and low quality of seating spaces.

Physical analysis:

Physically most of the restaurants of this street have low quality designed and mostly they do not have any archi-cultural character except Onbasilar and Ozgulen kebap restaurants.

Most of the restaurants and bars provide open space seating area in front part to use the view of the street. The lack of quality in architectural elements and design of these restaurants have effected the view of the street.

Physically kaymakly street is the administrative and residential street which provide dualism in the identity Of this street.

Physically restaurants and cafes in this street formed with the identity and demands of the space with out any attention to their identity as individual social space therefore they have lower quality than space and provide contrast with modern façade of the street.

Most of the restaurants and cafes in this street with providing the wide windows in the facades create eye contact between indoor and out door space some of them have harmony between their indoor and outdoor spaces quality in the other hand most of them did not provide minimum facilities for indoor spaces.

Design and material:• Most of the restaurants and bars/café in LEMARStreet

designed with the low quality materials except Kido burger ,Cagdas and Biralem.

• Most of them used concrete and steel and glass as the main material which ordered and designed in modern style. For instance , we can named, Kido burger and Cagdas restaurant for modern designed .

• In the other hand we can observe usage of wood and glass as the main material in Biralem and Gandel.

.Most of the restaurants and bars in Lemar street have semi open spaces which people can have their meal there, it is at the result of the local people culture and the climatically factors of north Cyprus in warm seasons.

. There are shading elements at the top of the most restaurants which control the glaring and create shadow, that they have been used to define a space .

Social analysis:

According to environments and function of Lemar road the users of the restaurants and bars/café in this street divide in to two main part ,first the people who come to daily or weekly shopping from franchising Lemar store from all over part of the city and secondly the local people.

The restaurants and bars/cafes in Lemar road are culturally formed to provide the demands of two kinds of users in this street those located around Lemar store dictated the cultural facts of the restaurants around franchising stores which are mostly fast food and casual fast food restaurants. The other one are to provide the demands of local people, therefore we can find mostly family style restaurants and café Bakery which formed with cultural translation from local people eating cultures and their demands.

Physical analysis:

physically restaurants and bars/cafes of Lemar Street divided to non-designed and designed one. Some of the restaurants which covered the commercial parts are designed with international standards factors of fast-foods with modern interior and exterior spaces those showed the Archi cultural translations of fast-food around franchising stores in Cyprus. In the other hand there are some local family style restaurants which have no archi- cultural elements and use low qualities of spaces in interior and exterior both.

Physically the dispersion of restaurants and bars/café along the Lemar road is moderated which lets to the costumers in the commercial part get rest between their shopping in them. Also restaurants and bars/café use the view of the street with providing open spaces in front of them.

Most of the restaurants and bars/cafés in this street use the wide glazing in their façade to provide connectivity between indoor and outdoor space and those have balcony in front side tried to provide semi open space with shading elements. DEREBOYU STREETDEREBOYU is one of the most famous commercial center in Lefkosa which includes 16 restaurants and café bar which consist four casual dining restaurants, four bars, a fast food, a fast casual, a café, a café bakery and four café ice-creams. It is a semi modern commercial street with rows of shops that consider as one of the shopping areas in Lefkosa and the chain of these café/bars and restaurants prepare hospitality for the people who walk along the street for shopping.

Most of the restaurants and bars/café used wood and stone and glass as the main material which ordered and designed in traditional style or modern. In the other hand we can observe completely modern designed spaces for Lavazza café, Burger city and Yaprak Tantuni restaurants which used steel, glass and composite as the main material.

SPACES AND ELEMENTS: Mostly restaurants and bar/café in this street use open or semi open spaces in front side to provide different space classification also in warm seasons of Lefkosa these open spaces let the costumers enjoy the natural ventilation and have the view of Dereboyu street with its crowdedness of people who walk and shopping. Therefore we can name Dereboyu Street as the exhibition of different shading devices.

Beyer restaurant provide private open space with the land scape which is in the contrast with another restaurants and bars/café.

Most of the restaurants and bars/café are using the Sliding windows to provide natural ventilation and easy accessibility between inside and outside. With this element they have convertible space which converts from close space to semi open space in warm periods.

Some of the restaurants and bars/café located in the old buildings and restored their area accordingly; therefore they have traditional structural elements in their interior spaces. In the other hand some of the restaurants designed with the traditional style and use decorative traditional elements and ornamentations Biyer restaurant and bar and café Aski are the examples for the first type and Cadde de passport and Mahzen bar are the examples for second type.

Some of the restaurants provide playground for children. It is one of the high quality modern standards of design a restaurant.

Except Burger city, Gold coliforian and Lavazza café all of the restaurants are single story area.

According to environment of Dereboyu street which include shops of high level brands the users of this street and its restaurants and bars/café divide in to two part first tourists which came to this street for shopping and secondly local people which can shopping from these shops and can pay the mostly high prices of these restaurants and bars/café , there for the restaurants and bars/café of Dereboyu street provide the high qualities spaces to cover demands of these users.

CULTURE:

Dereboyu street as the most important shopping street in lefkosa is the best example of cultural translation from famous shopping streets in the world like THE CHAMPS-ELYSEES in Paris or ISTIKLAL and BAGGDAD streets in Istanbul which include luxury and fashion shops and classy restaurants and bars there for the restaurants and bars/café in this street are not out of this translation. As the result most of the restaurants have international food and try to provide minimums standards of international restaurants and bars/café. Furthermore some of the restaurants and bars/café tried to save the Cypriot culture and prepared traditional spaces with modern standards and qualities. As the result users can observe cross cultural spaces and it’s good to say that we can find the co-existence and experience of traditional and modern in the some restaurants and bars/café of Dereboyu Street. As instance we can name Biyer restaurant and café , Mahzen bar and Aski café. Also existence of the examples like Gloria Jean’s coffees which is the branch of a franchise international café with the same qualities and standards all over the world dictated the pure western cultures to the local costumer which can be consider as the direct object for changes in the habits and culture of local people in long time period.

Physically all restaurants and bars/café have archi- cultural characteristics which designed moderately with modern manner and materials. Some of them designed with modern exterior and interior and some with traditional exterior and interior which show archi-cultural translations in them and their identity.

Physically the dispersion of restaurants and bars/café along the Dereboyu Street is moderated which lets to the costumers in the street get rest between their shopping in them and with the wide Varity of these restaurants and bars/café there is always different choices for different tastes. Also restaurants and bars/café use the view of the street with its crowdedness with providing open spaces along the street, therefore these restaurants and bars/café are in co-operation with street.

Formation of shops and buildings in the space and the economic, culture and environment factors give the modern shopping area identity to the space which provide best quality of shopping and socializing for local people and tourists in lefkosa.

Modern designed restaurants and bars/café with the high level qualities are in the harmony with space which both shows the cultural and archi –cultural translation of Cypriot from shopping streets.

Physically all of restaurants and bars/café in Dereboyu street with the using of wide glazing area in the facades provide eye contact between indoor and outdoor spaces which mostly have the order of open space, semi open space and close space to provide spatial identity for each restaurants and bars/café. But just in one case this order reversed and that is BIYER RESTURANT which provided private open area which located at the back side of the building.

Metropol road is the one of streets in new settlement which divided in to tow main part first half of the street is commercial and the rest is residential dwellings. There is three restaurant in this street which consist of two café and one family restaurant.

There are totally three restaurants and cafes in this street which located in the commercial part. Between them just Simit Dunyasi café have the Archi culture and we can find the food print of architects in the design of it which used glass and composite as the main material in façade and wood and ceramic as the interior material.in the other hand Altin café and Meliz restaurant are not designed by architect and used reinforced concrete and glass as the main material in exterior and do not have specific interior design.

DESIGN AND Material : SPACES AND ELEMENTS:

All of the restaurants and cafés in this street are single story and used open spaces in front of them which covered in Simit Dunyasi and Altin café with shading elements and in the Meliz restaurant coverd with an old tree. All of them used sliding and wide windows to provide natural ventilation. In Meliz restaurant the seating space are integrated with cooking area.

User of the restaurants and cafes in Metropol street divided in three parts which consist of people who coming for shopping in the street, the shoppers and sellers of the local shops and the local people who live in the residential part.

Culturally the restaurants and cafes in Metropol street are in the harmony with the local culture as instant the Simit café bakery is the one of example for cultural translation from Turkish people eating culture who mostly started their day meals with the cuisines of the bakeries like Simit café and the existence of the Meliz restaurant show the example of local family restaurants in Cyprus which have the cross cultural translation from Turkish food and the local people eating culture.

PHYSICAL ANALYSIS: RESTURANT AND BAR/CAFÉ:Physically the restaurants and cafes in metropol street have modern façade except of Simit café there is no archi cultural factors in them.

RESTURANT AND BAR/CAFÉ- STREET:

Physically restaurants and cafes of Metropol street located in the commercial part of the street which have middle quality shops also the restaurants are in the harmony with the street and with their open spaces and wide windows use the view of street and its crowdedness.

SPACE: There is dualism in the space identity half commercial and half residential.

RESTURANT AND BAR/CAFÉ -SPACE:Physically restaurants and cafes are in the harmony with the one side of the space but it is clear that there is lack in both quality and quantity of restaurants and cafes for residential part.

INDOOR-OUTDOOR SPACES: With using wide windows they provide eye contact between indoor and outdoor. spaces.

Conclusion:• The analysis of four street’s restaurants and bars/cafés in Lefkosa showed the similarities and differences

between these four street’s restaurants and bars/cafes which defined in three themes of visual, social and physical characteristics to showed the directly and effectively role of economic, cultural and environmental factors in these differences and similarities.

• It is unquestionably differences between the functions and identities of each street which effected directly on the formation and identities of their restaurants and bars/cafes. The analysis showed that Dereboyu street’s restaurants and bars/cafes formed with the highest quality among these four streets, this could be due to the fact that the environment and functional identity of this street is completely different with the other streets. The effects of the users of this street and their economic levels and the variety of their culture (due to the more touristic characters and attracts) dictated them to observe more higher standards of design and more multicultural and Archi-cultural variety to provide the demands of their costumers, as the result we can find more cultural translations have acquired in this street’s restaurants and also we can find more co-existence and experience of traditional and modern in their built environment. Secondly Metropol road with its dualism in identity showed lower quality of restaurants and bars/café which can be said has lack in these kind of facilities those not only have lack in quality also in quantity which can provide just the demands of shoppers and had not any attention to the residential parts. Thirdly Lemar road with the existence of franchising store of Lemar and its fast-food restaurants dictated cultural translation to this district but also there is the lack in quality of the restaurants which did not provide harmony with its environment. Last but not least Kaymakly road’s restaurants are completely formed to provide residential and administrative identity of this space with the to many low quality restaurants with delivery system for cover the demands of local people with not any consideration about qualities of seating area.

• In the other hand there are some similarities between these four street’s restaurants and bars/cafes which mostly showed their self as the result of climatically factors of the city or local traditional or habits of Cyprus local people in culture of eating. There for we can find café bakeries in all of the streets or open spaces seating area in front of most of restaurants in all four streets.

• To conclude totally the restaurants and bars/cafés in new settlement of Lefkosa are formed accordingly to the environmental and economic characteristics of their space and it’s clear that the spaces have more effect on cultural and Archi cultural translations of them than them effect on the spaces except the restaurants and bars/ cafes in Dereboyu street which are in co-opration with the street and both street and restaurants provide unity of space identity.
