Whilst a nine week term may seem appealing to some, all it really means @ Aquinas is that students and staff are fitting ten weeks of activities and work into nine weeks! For that reason I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the students in staying engaged in all manner of learning @ Aquinas. Obviously, it then follows that the College support and teaching staff have been unstinting in their efforts to provide all of the learning opportunities in and outside of the classroom that our students are lucky enough to be offered. Thank you all!! In many ways last week’s Aquinas Day celebrations were a perfect way to round out what has been an amazing term. The day began with our traditional Aquinas Day mass celebrated by our Parish Priest, Fr Phil Zadro, who is always generous to a fault with his time in supporting College events. Whilst we have had a long time to wait to celebrate our Patron as Aquinas’ Feast Day is actually January 28, too early in the Australian school year for us to mark, we were actually able to celebrate the “Mass of the Saint” as it fell at a liturgically possible time. For the first time in many years we heard the readings and prayers of the mass that are particular to Thomas. “Reason in man [woman] is rather like God in the world.” “The soul is like an uninhabited world that comes to life only when God lays His head against us.” Not surprisingly the readings refer to the intensely academic nature of Thomas, being a Doctor of the Universal Church, but his writing can also be intensely human. The readings from the Book of Wisdom and the Gospel of St Matthew focussed on wisdom, humility, and the nature of servant leadership; all traits of Thomas that are inspiration for us in the 21st century. Particularly in light of the absolute deluge of ‘information’ [or ‘misinformation’] that technology can deliver to us 24/7 in 2013. Thomas was renowned for thoughtfully testing thoughts and ideas and seeing and speaking wisely, two themes that I have taken up with students over the last two school assemblies in exploring how we see others and respond to them. My challenge to Aquinas students was not only to speak and treat each other with what is our God given dignity but to take this to their world outside of the College. Our community is fantastic at raising funds – a very important aspect of social justice. However, our faith though also calls for action of a different sort. Catholic social teaching calls for wise discernment and is based on the premise of “See, Judge and Act.” Our tradition also calls for immersion in the world and I think that we all need to push the envelope of our comfort zones to reach that level of ‘Faith in action.’ Aquinas students do reach that level at times in actions like Blood Bank donations, nursing home visits, ‘World’s Greatest Shaves’ and in the upcoming missionary work on the Saints of Lima WYD Pilgrimage but is also a challenge for us all to hear God’s voice in what is a very noisy world and join in the action. Fr Phil’s homily also touched on the idea of listening for God’s gentle call to vocation in what has become a very materialistic world.

Our Aquinas Day activities then moved into to a time of festivity as each pastoral class developed and ran stalls that offered food, fun and frivolity in all manner of fund raising initiatives. Classes were transformed into ‘Silent Discos’, Putt-Putt courses, Haunted Houses and the like to raise funds for the charities of our four House Patrons. These activities were entered into with great spirit and generosity of time by both students and staff; to the point that even Mr Nastasi relinquished the micro phone to stand in front of students throwing.wet sponges!

“We should not consider our material possession our own, but as common to all, so as to share them without hesitation when others are in need.”

Our last activity of the day was the Aquinas Day Talent Quest that saw over 900 people entertained by eleven fantastic acts. Whilst the talent on display in individual acts was undeniable and highly commendable, it was the Year 12 ensemble act of poetry, dance, song and slapstick that stole the show. The staff act that sought to imitate the ‘Harlem Shuffle’ of the Seniors fell valiantly short in comparison. It appears that rhythm may desert us as time passes by! In all the day was one of those that make being a part of the Aquinas Community such a joy. Congratulations again to all those who played so many parts in ensuring the success of the day; in particular I acknowledge the great work done by the Support Staff, Mrs Nolan, Mr Strudwick, Mr Tsambalas, Mrs McNamara and Mrs Bosi in the day’s organisation. On the day I was also pleased to announce some significant student achievements;

Our Senior Girls Netballers placed 1st in the Southern Sydney Tournament Our Junior Girls Netballers were Runners Up in the Southern Sydney Tournament Matthew Rootes and Zachary Ramsay were announced as 1 of 16 grand finalists in the ‘Have you got

talent?’ quest run across the 148 schools in the Archdiocese of Sydney Well done to all of these students in their efforts in representing the College. Finally, I would like to wish our WYD Pilgrims; Stephanie Branley, Lachlan Clark, Claire Di Leo, Joshua Duggan, Alyce Smith and Pilgrim Group Leader, Mr Strudwick Godspeed as they journey to South America and return safely to us our pilgrims in action in 2013. Thanks also to Mr Nastasi who will be Acting Principal and Mr Hulme who will be Acting Assistant Principal in my absence as a Bus Leader on the upcoming WYD Pilgrimage. We are all looking forward to what is bound to be an intense experience of our faith and also that unique feeling of returning ‘home’ to Menai in early August.

Religious Education at Aquinas Last Thursday, our community celebrated Aquinas Day. We gathered for a Eucharistic celebration in the morning, followed by stalls and activities run by each pastoral class, raising money for charities who continue the work of our house patrons. The day ended with our annual Aquinas Day Talent Quest. Thank you to Fr Phil, as well as all staff and students for their contribution to this significant College celebration. On Friday, Year 10 attended a ‘Village Space’ performance in our JP II Hall. The performance, named ‘Indigenous Struggles’, explored the challenges faced by the people of Bougainville, PNG and that of Indigenous Australians, including the story of Charles Perkins and the Freedom Ride. Thank you to the staff and students who attended this incursion, particularly the Year 10 students who took on an active role in the performance. On Tuesday Year 12 Studies of Religion students will be attending a SOR HSC Focus Day. This experience will be invaluable in their preparation for their upcoming examinations. Reflection on the Gospel

In Sunday’s Gospel (Luke 9:18-24), as Jesus was praying alone,

he asked his disciples ‘Who do you say I am?’ Peter responded,

‘The Christ of God’. Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell any-

one anything about this and foretold of his suffering, death and

resurrection. He then said ‘if anyone wants to be a follower of

mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross every day

and follow me.’

As Jesus begins to stress in this Gospel, his fulfilling of the role

of Messiah will not be that of conventional Jewish expectation,

but will involve an entrance into the pain and suffering of the

world, to bring it salvation from within. He also outlines what fol-

lowing him will involve – renouncing oneself and taking up one’s

cross daily. The readiness to adopt and live this out is the full

measure of the God-give conversion of heart.
