THE FUTURE OF MENTAL HEALTHTAKE YOUR LIFE BACK WITH MEDICATION-FREE WELLNESSNot long ago, Peter Hannouche suffered

from crippling anxiety. His panic attacks were so severe they left him drained, struggling with depression and too frustrated to function.

“I’m old school,” Peter says, when asked why he waited so long to seek help. “I figured I would muscle my way through it, but it got to a point when I couldn’t take being miserable anymore.”

Then he consulted Dr. William A. Lambos, the director of clinical assessment at CNS Wellness, who started Peter on a cutting-edge treatment plan—one that didn’t involve a single pill. CNS Wellness is a group of psychologists, mental health and rehabilitation professionals who treat disorders such as anxiety, depression, ADD, migraines, autism, epilepsy and learning disorders with medication-free methods.

The first step in Peter’s treatment was brain mapping, the process of measuring brain activity to determine which areas of Peter’s brain did not match the activity observed in high-functioning brains. Based on his findings, Dr. Lambos customized a series of sessions

designed to stimulate and re-train these areas. Twelve weeks later, a new set of maps showed his brain function had normalized, and “it changed my life,” Peter says. “I’m a new person.”

Peter was so impressed with his results that he bought the company and now serves as director of growth and development at CNS, making it his personal and professional mission to help people like him take back their lives. “This isn’t a quick fix or magic potion,” he says, “but it targets the underlying source of the problem, instead of just medicating the symptoms, and the only side effect is joy.”

Vegetable ta m p a B a y W e l l n e s s

Recipe by Chef Mary Skinner 2010 • www.finedinechef.com

Welcome once again to the Vegetable of the Month Club! This month’s vegetable is more popular than most people may realize. It is used in many restaurants and comes in many variet-ies. Ironically, though, when you see it on your plate, it’s not as part of the meal considered edible, it’s most often the garnish! By now you may have guessed it, we’re talking about Kale! Part of the cruciferous family, Kale is one of the most nutrient dense veg-etables around. Right now, local Kale is available in Florida as it is in peak season until March. It can be found in stores all year. Varieties of Kale include Laciniato, Red and Green.

Much research is available on the health benefits of Kale. Kale can pro-

vide you with some special choles-terol-lowering benefits if you will cook it by steaming. The fiber-related components in kale do a better job of binding together with bile acids in your digestive tract when they’ve been steamed. Isothiocyanates (ITCs) made from glucosinolates in Kale play a primary role in achieving risk-lowering benefits. New research has shown that these same ITCs can also help regulate detox at a genetic level so it is now recognized as a great support for the body’s detoxification.

Here is a great recipe for Caldo Gal-lego (Spanish Bean Soup), a delicious, hearty soup featuring our Vegetable of the Month in a role more fitting to it than simply that of the garnish! Enjoy!

Kale

A very common topic of discussion in my clinic is nutrition: Part of my health history intake is asking about the patient’s diet, and I very

frequently make nutritional recommendations to assist their health goals.

In addition, I am often asked about what is the healthiest way to eat. It used to be mainly a weight-loss related question, but now it seems to also be people who are struggling with severe health problems such as cancer, auto-immune diseases and chronic degenerative diseases. I find it encouraging that people are starting to acknowledge the quality of their nutrition as a fundamental source of their health or disease.

Nutrition as Medicine:The quality of what we consume directly affects our state of health. Depending on what we choose to eat, our diets can be medicinal or harmful. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, knew this. He is famous for saying “Let thy food be thy medicine, and thy medicine be thy food.”

Healthy nutrition provides the foundational energy and substance which nourishes, heals and sustains our bodies in a state of vibrancy and health; poor diet depletes, harms and toxifies our bodies, causing myriad symptoms and diseases.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has also known this for centuries (actually millennia, to be more accurate). In fact, of the Eight Branches of Oriental medicine, nutrition is one of the most powerful, and certainly is the one that each of us has the most control over on a daily basis, as we all need to eat multiple times daily. Perhaps you’ve not thought of nutrition as medicine before now, but it is an important concept in TCM.

First thing’s First: Whole Foods:Before delving into the deeper principles of health-pro-moting nutrition, we must first eliminate the fast food, junk food, preservatives, chemicals, sugars, and excess fats in our diets. We cannot help our bodies become and stay healthy if we are regularly eating these types of foods. It is essential to learn to read labels, and stay away from products that contain ingredients that are not recognizable food names, and chemical-sounding names.

The simplest and most profound piece of advice for building health through nutrition is to eat whole, unprocessed foods. Whole foods are those that are rec-ognizable in their natural state: Whole vegetables and fruits, such as apples, carrots, cucumbers and spinach; whole, unprocessed grains, such as brown rice, quinoa, corn and oats; whole cooked beans, whole nuts and seeds without oils or flavorings added, etc.

Whole foods contain all types of vitamins, fiber, miner-als, and health benefiting phytochemicals that number in the hundreds, or even thousands, that work syner-gistically to nourish us. Many of these phytochemicals modern nutritional science hasn’t yet even identified. It makes the most sense to give ourselves every advantage in the quest for excellent long-term health by consum-ing as much of the beneficial elements that we can in the foods we know are health-promoting. The best way to do this is by eating them in their whole-food form.

Refined and processed foods, such as pretzels, chips, crackers, white flour, white rice, sugar, sodas, oils, and processed meats are not whole foods. Their base ingre-dients have been stripped of any nutritional value they once had, they have little or no fiber, and they add a lot of sugar, fat and chemicals that wreak havoc with our physical health and negatively impact our mental and emotional outlook (not to mention our waist lines.)

Now What?Once we’ve eliminated the junk foods and processed foods from our diets, how do we further modify our diets to best support our health goals? The answer to this question involves many facets. l

Next month - Nutrition, part 2 will focus on Nutritional Guidelines in oriental medicine, based on the physiology of digestion from a Chinese medicine point of view.

I don’t know how I've allowed myself to sink this low,” explained Alison. This was her first experience in

seeing a therapist. Having just turned thirty, and unmarried, she was sure that she was destined to be alone for the remainder of her sad life. “I met this guy, Rick, about six months ago. At first, I really didn’t like him. He was sort of arrogant, and pushy. He pursued me for a while, and after I finally gave in it seemed we were very good together. After our first date, we saw each other almost every day after, until just recently. Then it all fell apart. He said he just wasn’t ready for a commitment, and needed his space. Actually, I knew the real story. He met someone at work, and I’m pretty sure he fell in love with her. This isn’t the first time this has hap-pened to me.” Alison sank down into the sofa, “I just don’t get it, what’s wrong with me?”

This is my twenty-first year of practicing

psychotherapy. After conducting well over ten thousand hours of therapy ses-sions with clients from all walks of life, each one is a first in essence. Over these years and sessions, I have learned a few things about human behavior. Generally speaking, if a person can describe the problem they are experiencing, they can also describe the solution. However, to carry out the solution is an entirely different challenge. This has always been an intriguing concept for me on a personal level, and as a professional, “If I know what the solution is, then why can’t I just do it?”

“Alison, it seems that you are having a lot of doubt about yourself, and your ability to have a successful relation-ship.” I continued, “I’d like to ask you a question. How do you think we need to approach this situation?” Having posed this question to her, Alison will now be able to describe the problem as she sees it.

“Well, I don’t seem to choose men very well. I’ve had this same thing happen lots of times. It's strange, I know what makes a good man for me. But I don’t seem to choose them. Why don’t I just choose better men?”

We could all agree that this relationship had been a bad choice, and there seems to be a pattern in Alison’s choices of men. So why not just make the good or right choice? Questions such as these led me to write a book called, “Why Good People Make Bad Choices.” In the book, I ask and then provide my answer to the question inferred by the title.

“They more he pulled away, the more I tried to hold on. Then I couldn’t stop thinking about him. I think I went overboard in trying to show him that I was the best woman for him. I think I was really in love with that guy, but in the end, he didn’t even like me,” Alison lamented.

“Alison, do you think you are likeable?”

“That’s a good question, I’m not sure,” she responded.

“At the risk of this sounding like kindergarten psychotherapy, do you like yourself?”

“If I say I’m not sure, that kind of sounds like a ‘no’ then doesn’t it?”

“So maybe the problem isn’t how you choose men. Maybe it’s how you don’t like your life. If you don’t like it, will others?

So, why do good people like Alison make bad choices? There is a problem at the heart of this matter. The problem is human instinct. I have a theory called the ego’s agenda. As the theory goes, human beings are driven toward self-preservation – or simply, survival.

Toward this goal we follow a set of subconsciously maintained directives: 1) Minimize physical and emotional pain. 2) Maximize physical and emotional gratification. 3) Establish and maintain external power and control. And, 4) Establish and maintain idealism – internal and external. These directives become the agenda of the human ego, or – the ego’s agenda. What does this mean in a nutshell? It means deep down inside we like to feel no pain, feel lots of pleasure, be powerfully in control, and feel superior. Look no further than your own “bad” choices for examples of how this agenda influences you.

“Here’s what I think is going on Alison. It seems that you are trying to avoid the pain of loneliness. It feels good to be in the company of someone who clearly wants to be with you. Even when you initially show resistance, he persists, and sometimes this feels flatter-ing. You probably feel a rush of excitement in a new relationship. When you don’t feel good about you, or how you are living your life, its very tempting to jump into a relationship with someone. You get distracted from you own pain and problems, and it’s a quick fix for self worth deficits. The problems can start when the relationship loses its initial momentum. The rush starts to fade, and you begin to worry. As you desperately try to control the dynamics of the relationship, and fail, your self-worth goes with it. The basic problem is that your ego has gotten involved, it has interfered with your choices.”

Many millions of years of evolution have hard-wired the ego’s agenda into our brains. This is why it is some-times so hard to “do the right thing” in life. There is a competing part of our brains that interferes with our good choices, saying to us: “avoid that discomfort, feel good now, get control, get power, and become an alpha leader.” This is why we feel compelled to procrastinate, eat the ice cream, yell when we’re mad, worry about how we look, and fantasize about external approval.

“Okay, that all makes sense,” says Alison. “I never really looked at it that way before. So now what do I do?”

“Getting involved in another romantic relationship will just soothe your fearful ego. Instead of seeking out another boyfriend, I’d say begin to focus on building a life that you love. If you do that first, then you will know what brings you joy. Start making conscious decisions about how you want to spend your time.

Think about creating a world that you enjoy spending time in. Each day, spend some time doing something physical, mental, and spiritual for yourself. Develop a few non-romantic relationships to diversify your social circle. As you create your joy-filled world, you will attract others to it.”

In order to overcome the powerful influence of the ego’s agenda, you must have a clearly established alternative agenda. In my book, the solution is to con-sciously establish a belief system. This means that you make conscious decisions about how to spend your time in life. It means that you decide what is important to you, what standards to hold yourself up to, what to expect of yourself, and what kind of person you are becoming.

Two weeks later Alison returned for her next appoint-ment. Only this time there was a spring in her step. “I just have to tell you what’s going on. I’ve made some

important changes since we last talked. I’ve taken up a yoga class for starters. Also, I’ve met some people there, and we’ve been going out for coffee after class. It’s been great, and I feel like I’m coming out of my shell. I’ve been so used to chasing the approval of the men I’ve dated that I totally forgot how to live. I’m going to win my self over for a change. Like you said, my scared ego was running the show, and now that I’m focusing on myself, things aren’t so complex. It makes sense to me now, I’m seeing myself evolving into a fun and healthy woman. As I continue to do that, I’ll attract fun and healthy people into my life. That’s just got to be a good thing.”

Over the next month, Alison added several other ac-tivities to her life, including a book club, bicycling, and volunteering for an organization that helps to build houses for homeless families. She was living a life that she loved and was proud of. Eventually Alison finished with me in therapy. A year later I received a letter from her: “Lately I’ve been doing some thinking about how my life has changed over the past year. It took a bad experience to make me take a good look at the way I was living.

It all changed when I started making a few choices differently. It was not about making huge staggering changes like I would have thought. Instead, I just made a few small changes that wound up having spectacular outcomes with time. I think my original questions to you were, ‘What’s wrong with me, and why don’t I choose better men.’ What I found out was that when I changed the way I lived my life, those questions were no longer important. Everyday now, I can see what’s right with me, and that has made all the difference.”

Magic diet pill! Melt your fat away! Diet and exercise not required! Messages like these on weight-loss products taunt consumers looking for a quick and easy way to shed pounds.

But these products don’t live up to their claims. Even worse, they can cause serious harm, say federal regulators, who have found dozens of products being touted as dietary supple-ments but that actu-ally contain hidden prescription drugs or compounds that have not been adequately studied in humans.

“These products are not legal dietary supplements,” says Michael Levy, direc-tor of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) Division of New Drugs and Labeling Compliance. “They are actually very powerful drugs masquerading as ‘all-natural’ or ‘herbal’ supplements, and they carry significant risks to unsuspecting consumers."

“We have seen deaths associated with these weight-loss products,” adds Levy. “Make no mistake—they can kill you.”

FDA has found weight-loss products tainted with the prescription drug in-gredient sibutramine. This ingredient was in an FDA-approved drug called Meridia, which was removed from the market in October 2010 because it caused heart problems and strokes. FDA has also found other prescrip-tion drug ingredients that have been removed from the market or never approved at all.

“We’ve found other weight-loss products marketed as supplements that contain dangerous concoctions of hidden ingredients including seizure medications, blood pressure medica-tions, and other drugs not approved in the U.S.,” says Levy.

Many of these tainted products are im-ported and sold through the Internet, but some can also be found on store shelves. FDA has made it a priority to seek out these dangerous products, stop them from being imported, and take legal action against firms that manufac-ture and distribute them.

But the problem is so big that FDA needs help. The agency is reaching out to the dietary supplement industry to help eliminate the availability and sale of these products. And FDA is enlisting the help of consumers.

“We also need consumers to be aware of these dangerous products and to learn how to identify and avoid them,” says Levy. (See FDA’s Web page and video on how to recognize fraudulent weight-loss products and claims.)

Don't Fall for Fraud

Look for potential warning signs of tainted products, such as

• Promises of quick action, such as “lose 10 pounds in one week”

• Use of the words “guaranteed” or “scientific breakthrough”

• Labeled or marketed in a foreign language

• Marketed through mass e-mails

• Marketed as an herbal alternative to an FDA-approved drug or as having effects similar to prescription drugsAdvice for Consumers

Generally, if you are using or consid-ering using any product marketed as a dietary supplement, FDA suggests that you:

• Check with your health care pro-fessional or a registered dietitian about any nutrients you may need in addition to your regular diet

• Ask your health care professional for help distinguishing between reliable and questionable information

• Ask yourself if it sounds too good to be true

• Be cautious if the claims for the product seem exaggerated or unrealistic.

• Watch out for extreme claims such

as “quick and effec-tive” or “totally safe.”

• Be skeptical about anecdotal informa-tion from personal “testimonials” about incredible benefits or results obtained from using a product.

If you suspect a dietary supplement sold online may be illegal, FDA urges you to re-port that information online. You or your health care profes-sional can also report an illness or injury you believe to be related to the use of a dietary supplement by calling 1-800-FDA-1088.

Supple-ments & the FDa

Dietary supplements, in general, are not FDA-approved. Under the law (Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994), dietary supple-ment firms do not need FDA approval

prior to marketing their products. It is the company’s responsibility to make sure its products are safe and that any claims are true.

Just because you see a supplement product on a store shelf does NOT mean it is safe or effective. When safety issues are suspected, FDA must inves-tigate and, when warranted, take steps to have the product removed from the market. However, it is much easier for a firm to get a product on the market than it is for FDA to take a product off the market.

FDA has worked with industry to recall more than 40 products marketed for weight loss with potentially harmful ingredients, and has issued consumer alerts about dozens more. The agency also has issued warning letters, seized products, and criminally prosecuted people responsible for these illegal diet products.

FDA cannot test all products on the market to identify those that contain po-tentially harmful hidden ingredients. l

There are several ways that you can see when a person is fit and healthy! Nothing says so more than your BUM! Whether you are looking

to just make some minor tweaks to your backend OR you are looking for a complete overhaul, these tips are sure to get you started well on your way!

Toned glute muscles are a clear sign of a person who is fully conditioned. You can have people who are tight and toned all over but nothing speaks more volumes than when they turn around. Your glutes are a tell tale sign of your conditioning. It really shows utmost discipline to your diet and your every day routine when your glutes are tight, toned and firm! J

I myself had to work extra extra hard at this. When I used to be over 208 pounds I carried almost ALL of my weight in my lower body. I remember clearly having lower back problems and reduced mobility because of this excess weight I was haul-ing around and most of it, in my caboose! If I was able to firm up my “rear view” I KNOW you can too!

Here is the GREAT news! With dedication and discipline – you CAN achieve amazingly firm GLUTES! How great will that feel!?

Lets get started on my top five tips and if you ever have any questions feel free to reach out and email me! I am always avail-able to help you achieve your fitness goals!

Tip #1 - AWARENESS of your food! This starts with keeping a food journal of anything and everything you are eating! Cut out all processed foods, sugars, saturated fats and junk food! Opt for nice lean protein choices, complex carbs and fresh veggies. Make sure that you are fueling that body every 2.5-3.5 hours. You will be AMAZED

at how this helps you shed weight in your BUM!It is key to write things down because it makes you much more AWARE of the use-less calories you are in taking each day!You know what I am talking about- those calories that do nothing other than add weight to your caboose!

Tip #2 – Target those GLUTES! Your glutes are a muscle and MUSCLES love to be worked!Be sure to engage your glutes when performing exercises. If you are able to do so, squats and lunges work VERY well! You will either love them OR develop a love/hate relationship with them but THEY WORK! It is obviously advised to seek the help of a pro-fessional if you are unaware of proper form. The key is to put your mind into the muscle and really focus intently on that area you are try-ing to manage. While there is no such thing as “spot reduction” you will engage this area working and toning it to sheer beauty!

Tip #3 - Weights and Cardio (The Two love-birds) I have met several types of people – those who love cardio and hate weights or those who LOVE weights and hate cardio.Think of the two as lovebirds. You sim-ply cannot have one without the other. When you learn the power of the TWO to-gether – you will see such a huge change in your body’s response to exercise. I always tell my clients that it is about “work-ing SMARTER, not HARDER” I advise fueling up and going HEAVY on the weights, do not hold back now! Be bold and lift with a medium to heavy resistance. Follow this by cardio (you will have depleted your glycogen stores at this point) and will therefore burn your body’s FAT storage! Now – your shaping those nice glute muscles

you were blessed with AND shedding that layer of fat on top! It’s a beautiful pair!

Tip #4 – Don’t forget sister thighs! You simply cannot work on strengthening y our core WITHOUT working on strengthening your back. Likewise, you do not want to maintain focus only on your caboose without paying some special attention to the thighs, hamstrings and inner thighs! When you focus on the entire lower portion of your body you are creating strong toned fit legs AND GLUTES.. now this is REALLY nice! J The total overall energy expenditure is more as well!

Tip # 5 – The infamous “BE PATIENT!” YES! I said it! I did not go from 208 pounds of unhap-piness to fit, healthy and HAPPY overnight! I had to face the realization that it took me quite a bit of time to put on this unnecessary weight and it would take some time to rid myself of it!You must be patient! Getting frustrated and constant-ly putting yourself down will only result in failure. You must search for adjectives as goals to keep you motivated instead of living by the scale. Seek to be happy, healthy, fit and en-ergetic! You will see that you start to really LIVE this healthy life for the right reasons.Oh – and before you know it, that rear view will show you a great big THANK YOU!! J

As always, I am accessible almost all of the time! I can be reached at 813-907-6227 or via email at [email protected] You CAN do this!

spring is finally here! But unfortunately for many of us, so is allergy season. Just when you think you’ve made it through flu season, symp-

toms of a runny nose, itchy eyes, and sore throat start to coincide with the yellow haze all over our cars and the great outdoors. That familiar dread of an irritated head is enough to drive anyone crazy.

An allergy is characterized by an ‘over reaction’ of our immune system to a foreign protein substance. In other words, our immune system goes haywire to any contaminant it can’t make sense out of. Biological contaminants include bacteria, mold, mildew, viruses, animal dander and cat saliva, house dust, mites, cock-roaches, pollen, foods and chemicals.

There are many sources of these pollutants. Pollens originate from plants; viruses are transmitted by

people and animals; bacteria are carried by people, animals, and soil and plant debris;

and household pets are sources of saliva and animal dander. The protein in urine from rats and mice is a potent allergen. When it

dries, it can become airborne. Con-taminated central air handling systems

can become breeding grounds for mold, mildew, and other sources of biological contaminants and can then distribute these contaminants through the home and work place; sounds gross and scary doesn’t it?

Not to mention pretty impossible to avoid.

It should be no surprise that allergies have been linked to a number of other

chronic diseases, like asthma, digestive problems, migraines and auto-immune disorders like Lupus,

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Eczema. Most people will try the quickest route to symptom relief by trying any medicines they can. However, these ‘one size fits all’ medical treatments for symptoms only leave us with a different symptom. In fact, most allergy medica-tions can cause higher blood pressure, headaches, lack of focus and fatigue and then make our original symptom worse.

But why do we do this? Consumers crave brands with health and affordability claims, according to Information Resources Inc.’s annual New Product

YogaPacesetters report. PepsiCo’s G2 and over-the-counter allergy relief medication Zyrtec topped the list of most successful product introductions last year. Wait a minute-an allergy medication made it to the top of the list out of all new products? It makes you wonder how many people in the United States are suffering from allergies.

According to the National Institutes of Health, (NIH), environmental allergies are on a huge rise. The NIH conducted a study back in 1994 that showed about 54 percent of Americans had some form of allergy. Since then, more than 5 million Americans have been diagnosed, and those numbers are increasing every year. In fact, these increasing numbers have gotten the attention of the EPA, which has become involved with public health issues. Drug store shelves are loaded with anti-histamines, nasal sprays and steroids. Even the practice of Environmental medicine is a new medical specialty that recognizes how many people with allergies need treatment. In other words, allergies are on the rise and people are demanding attention for more help.

Literally thousands of years ago, the dynasties in China were dealing with allergies in their highly populated communities but they turned to their Tra-ditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to treat underlying causes and not just the symptoms. TCM treats the body as a whole, and recognized that allergies pre-sented with ‘multi-system’ involvement. Meaning that although you may have itchy eyes and a runny nose, those symptoms are just a reflection of what may be out of balance within the body.

In order to treat an ailment, a proper differential diagnosis is made by looking at other outward signs like the color of your tongue, the feeling of your pulse, your complexion, personality, and even certain foods you may be eating. When you are given a diagnosis by an Acupuncture physician, you may be told that you have a ‘Spleen Qi deficiency’ a ‘Wei Qi deficiency’ or ‘Wind Cold invading the Lungs’. Each of these conditions can be treated with acupuncture, food therapy, tui-na (massage techniques), and the proper herbal formula. ’Yes, everyone is unique! So how can one treat a symptom the same way for all people and expect to resolve or heal any underlying issues? Although the explanations of disease in TCM seem poetic and novel, they are anything but. After time proven methods and modern research, allergies are be-ing treated with TCM in a very specific and targeted way. Why use life-long drug therapy when in many cases identifying contributing factors can eliminate and greatly reduce such problems? I once suffered with allergies and the pitfalls of treat-ment but I now consider myself more of a successful survivor than a victim of the season’s allergens. As an Acupuncture Physician, one of the most rewarding parts of my practice is freeing people from their battle between symptoms and drugs. With the tools of Chinese medicine this is possible.

Ever notice the way you walk or stand? Ever found yourself waiting in line, putting all your weight

into one leg? Maybe take a peek at the heels of your shoes? Over time our uncon-scious tendencies produce imbalances.

Standing, not so hard. Right?

Bring your feet together, put your heels up against the wall if you’d like. With toes and heels touching, lift the toes and spread them apart, then let them lengthen back down onto the mat. Begin to gently close your eyes and wow! Notice what your body is doing. Redistribute your body weight until you feel more balanced on the front, back, left and right side of your body. Secure your stance by rooting into the earth with the mound of the big toe, little toe and the two points on each of your heels. Notice your arches. See if you can give a subtle lift to the arches which sparks a current of energy from the arches up the inner leg into the groin area. Allow the an-kles to strengthen. Feel the calves and shins begin to activate. Your knees are moving in an upward motion. Notice the direction,“upward”, not back-ward. The movement of the knees begin to awaken the hamstrings and quadriceps. Both legs are now active and working together as a strong base. Let the

tail bone slightly tuck under, as the pelvic area begins to tilt up the hips are gently rolling open creating space in your pelvic area. As the breath moves into your body feel the belly fill, as the breath leaves feel your center remain engaged in uplifted. As the breath rolls in again notice the chest filling, opening . Your heart center is shining bright. As the breath rolls out, sense the freedom in the shoulders as they relax down the back. Your arms are long and engaged all the way through the elbows, wrist and fingers. Your neck is find-ing it’s natural space out of the shoulders. The crown of the head is lifting you a touch more. Your chin is tucking slightly

h as your child been diagnosed with Scoliosis? Are you con-fused as to what steps you

should take to help your child? Are you currently in the “wait and see” period? For those of you that don’t know, Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral bending of the spine that occurs in ap-proximately 2-4 % of the population. It is associated with back pain, neck pain, diminished quality of life, limited activity, decreased respiratory function and lower self-esteem. Scoliosis is more prevalent in girls and is usually detected

between 8 and 14 years of age by either a pediatrician or the parents. So, if your child were diagnosed with scoliosis what would you do? Imagine this scenario: A mother brings her daughter to the pediatri-cian who discovers her daughter has scoliosis. The mother is then referred to an orthopedic surgeon who determines that the curve(s) are below 25 degrees. At this point, he states there is nothing to do at this time as she is not in need of a brace and isn’t a

Is early Intervention the answer?By Dr. Jacqueline Smith

surgical candidate. So, the prescribed approach is to wait and see what happens. Four months later the mother takes the daughter back to the orthopedic surgeon only to find out that her curves got worse and she has to wear a brace for 23 hours a day or worse yet, she needs surgery. This is usually the moment when panic sets in and the parents wonder what it is they can do to help their child. What would you do? The current methods of treatment are observation (wait and see) only, bracing and surgical interven-tion. Looking at each respectively, observation in and of itself is not technically a treatment and it al-lows time for the curvature to get worse, bracing has been shown to be emotionally detrimental with a high non-compliance rate and surgical intervention is trading deformity for dysfunction. As there may be needs for bracing and surgery in certain instances, it is worth visiting the idea of early intervention in those cases that fall into the observa-tion only category, usually below 25 degrees. A child’s posture is a good indicator of underlying spinal problems. A typical scoliosis posture pattern demonstrates a high right hip and shoulder, their head may be too far forward (the ears should be in line with the shoulders), and in severe cases their rib cage may be rotated. Unfortunately, current screening using the Adam’s Test where a child bends forward at the waist and is observed from behind

has been termed the “Too Late Test.” If a rib hump or bump is observed during this procedure, the rib cage has already started to rotate. The ability for parents and health practitioners to recognize these early warning signs could set the stage for an early intervention program that may halt the scoliosis from getting worse. Scoliosis is not only a skeletal problem, but it is also a disease of the neuro-muscular-skeletal system. It involves postural disorganization, neuro-musculo-skeletal dysfunction and unsynchronized growth patterns. Re-education of the musculature and associated postural reflexes is an absolute necessity when rehabilitating a curvature. Let’s take a closer look at the thought process behind early intervention. The first thing to realize is that all big curves start out small and each scoliotic curve is individual in nature. There is no one easy answer on how to tackle a curvature but there are contrib-uting factors that appear to be common among children with scoliosis. One factor that needs to be addressed is the front to back curves seen on a side view x-ray. More often than not, there is a loss of the natural curvature in the neck, the mid-back or low back. Sometimes a loss of curvature is present in all three areas. The first goal in early manage-ment of these cases is to restore these natural curves to reduce the tension on the spinal cord. This is accomplished by specific chiropractic adjustments and neuromuscular rehabilitation.

The second component of an early active rehabili-tation program is to address the neuromuscular imbalances. Some scoliosis patients have issues with balance and proprioception, which is an individual’s awareness of their body position. Active and Reac-tive exercises are applied in the office and performed at home by the patient to re-coordinate the tonal (postural) muscles helping to improve overall bal-ance and function. If a child has a scoliosis that is classified as observa-tion only, this is the perfect time to actively reha-bilitate the neuromuscular system. Early, proactive rehab may be successful in preventing the curve from progressing, possibly even reducing it, making a significant impact on the patient’s overall health and quality of life. This article was written in hopes of reaching all those parents whose children are in the “wait and see” category. ●

Move over Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler and Carl Jung there’s a new wave in mental health and it is called Rapid

Resolution Therapy. It’s a unique and powerful ap-proach that is brief, painless and allows for a rapid resolution from the negative effect s of any current issue or past event. The final result is a feeling of renewed emotional freedom.

Rapid Resolution Therapy or RRT is the “brain child’ of Dr. Jon Connelly PhD., who initially developed this mode of treatment for trauma survi-vors. These methods worked so well it was expanded to help all clients. In particular, not only has RRT been found to be highly effective when clearing

a traumatic event but also when addressing other issues such as abuse, anxiety, panic, depression, fear/phobias, PTSD, anger, grief or weight loss.

So how does all this work?! The premise is based on how trauma is encoded in the brain, how we process, store and utilize information, perceive time, view basic emotions and respond to “stuff” in general. During an RRT session, the therapist will guide the client through specific processes such as multi-level communication, establishing connec-tion, utilizing creative visualizations, changing internal geography and perceived identity. These processes engage many facets of the mind but on a much deeper level. Engaging the mind in a specific

way to enhance the mind’s responsiveness is akin to the now famous studies that were conducted on the brain while studying and listening to certain classical music known as “the Mozart effect”. When brain scans were taken of the brain it was found that both the right and left hemispheres were activated, thus enhancing learning and memory.

RRT’s strength is enabling the mind to pinpoint the exact events to clear, in what order and do so quickly and painlessly while simultaneously organiz-ing and optimizing the mind to work at its very best. Connelly developed and simplified the process of trauma resolution which he affectionately terms “clearing ghosts from the past”. For instance, a ghost from the past is defined as any past event

that is currently having a negative effect or influence today and the distorted beliefs that get attatched to it. This can be any event from a big “T” trauma such as war, rape, violence or a little “t” event such as your teacher calling you in front of the class to give a book report , you then became all “veklempt” and now dread speaking in front of a group of peo-ple. Moreover, when the problematic way that the mind had been working around an issue or event is cleared it leaves the client with a feeling of peace and energy. Hence, the phrase “transformational” is now widely associated with Connelly’s method.

Fast and immediate results have many benefits, the obvious one is feeling better immediately which means you will be actually looking forward to resolving your issues, the second is with faster results you spend less time in therapy which is extremely appealing to clients when their time is at a premium. But I like the one about feeling good and getting clear sooner rather than later!

Clients have the intelligence within themselves to get unstuck and move forward, sometimes we just need a little help and direction. Rapid Resolution Therapy is a phenomenal way to help people who currently want to change the way they were thinking, feeling, acting or reacting around an issue or event and who desire to move forward with their lives.

RRT is currently being researched at Georgia State University, has been cited in the Sept 2010 Soldiers Magazine of the US Army, and Colonel S. Richie-Melvan, Ph.D., and D. Vines, Ph.D. book on combat nurses in Iraq and Afghanistan entitled Angel Walk . ●

Lamonica is a predigested Brown Algae Super-Concentrate. It has been proven to balance thyroid

function, and detoxify the body from heavy metals and radiation. Specifically formulated for human consumption it is safe for vegetarians, vegans and diabetics. Lamonica contains the vital properties of: Alginate, a natural absorbent of heavy metals and Laminarin, a Polysaccha-ride. It contains Beta 1.3/1.6 glucan and Fucoidan, another Polysaccharide. It stimulates the immune system and heavy metal detoxification, including Mercury, Lead, Uranium, Strontium.

But what is Fucoidan? Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide which is found in brown seaweed such as mozuku, wakame, and kombu (Laminaria japonica). It is a common element of kelp (general name for brown seaweed) and other sea plants. The “slimy” component of seaweeds is a rich source of fucoidan, which is a general term referring to a group of polysac-charides containing sulfated fucose – an essential sugar. Numerous studies have found that polysaccharides, a class of di-etary fiber contained in brown algae, have many health benefits. In Japan, fucoidan extracted from brown seaweed has been clinically shown to increase natural killer cell activity as well as improve activation of macrophage, T-cells and B-cells. Scien-tific research proposes that many health conditions could be positively impacted by the regular consumption of fucoidan.

Among the conditions that can be af-fected are: immune system modulation, cancer, heart disease, rheumatism and arthritis (types of inflammation), high blood pressure, infectious disease, gastro-intestinal function, and more. Modula-tion is a term used to describe the process of reducing the extremes of cellular activity – either stimulation or inhibition. Immune modulating substances have the ability to work in both directions. They can boost the immune system when it is depressed (referring to conditions such as chronic fatigue) and can also suppress the immune system when it is over-stimulated (such as in the case of autoim-mune diseases like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis). Most immune modulating agents work by improving inter-cellular communication. One way that cells com-municate is by presenting on their surface complex, information-rich protein

(glycoprotein) macromolecules linked with molecules of saccharides or sugars (polysaccharides). An inter-cell “message” depends on the structure of saccharides. For example, one message might tell a cell to start producing specific chemicals, and another message might tell a cell when to divide. Cells have glycoprotein receptor molecules, which can read messages from other cells and respond accordingly. The immune system depends heavily on this kind of communication to co-ordinate cellular defense, apoptosis, cell attack and repair processes. When any of saccharides required to build capable glycoprotein – and thereby to pass on a correct message – is missing, the quality of that communication is jeopardized.

A study done in the early 1960's seems to confirm the traditional belief that sea vegetables have an antibacterial effect in the intestines. Moreover, in the test tube, seaweed extract was shown to be an effective antibiotic drug against common food poisoning bacteria. Sea vegetables have even been shown to inhibit the growth of herpes virus in test tubes. As a result of this research, a few new medicines have been developed from this underwater harvest, such as laminin, which is used to reduce blood pressure. The most important discovery about sea vegetables for modern living, however, is their ability to cleanse the body of toxins. This powerful cleansing action has been linked to a substance called alginic acid. Alginic acid is a polysaccharide that is abundant in those sea vegetables classi-fied as brown algae, including kombu, hijiki, arame, and wakame. Scientific researchers, including a team led by Dr. Tanaka at McGill University, have demonstrated that alginic acid binds with any heavy metals found in the intestines, renders them indigestible, and causes them to be eliminated. So, any heavy metals, such as barium, cadmium, lead, mercury, zinc, and even radioac-tive strontium, that may be present in the intestines will not be absorbed by the body when alginic acid is present.

Doctors Seibin and Teruko Arasaki, Japanese scientists who have published several books about sea vegetables, also report this cleansing property of alginic acid in their book, Vegetables From the Sea. They conclude, “Heavy metals

taken into the human body are rendered insoluble by alginic acid in the intestines and cannot, therefore, be absorbed into body tissues.” What’s more, Dr. Tanaka’s research has shown that the alginic acid in sea vegetables actually helps bind and draw out any similar toxins that are already stored in our bod-ies, thus “lowering the body’s burden.”

Brown algae’s natural affinity for binding with toxic non-organic heavy metals may soon be exploited by industry. Research conducted over the last decade has shown that treating heavy metal-bearing industrial effluents with brown algae is an effective and economical way to detoxify industrial waste. The process, called “biomass biosorption,” is particu-larly effective for lead and cadmium.

If there is another event like Chernobyl in 1986, we need to be prepared for it to affect us in the US. When unfortunate events such as the horrific earthquake occur, it does res-onate throughout the world, not just one country. Leaking radiation will circle the globe, and holistic practi-tioners will be the first line of defense for the population. We understand how radiation affects the human body and what can be done to prevent any illness or remove any ra-diation that is absorbed by the body. Along with specific iodine products, Lamonica is the foremost product in that line of defense. Taking iodine when not needed can be detrimental to one’s health, according to NBC’s medical advisors. Lamonica is a physician prescribed product that cannot be purchased in any store.
