Sock & Slipper Collection Sowing seeds of Justice and Compassion ... On Holy Thursday Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, in His time customarily the task of a servant, as a sign that we should each serve one another. In 21st century United States, this is not our custom, but people’s feet, especially of those who are elderly and homeless, still need care. Many of the seniors served by Catholic Charities are low-income and a good number are immigrants from warmer climates. They find the winters here especially cold and enjoy having soft, warm footwear to wear at home. The homeless served by A-SPAN are out in all weathers and on their feet a good portion of the day. They are in need of athletic socks. Beginning next weekend, March 30th through Holy Thursday, St Ann’s will be holding its annual Slippers and Socks collection for Catholic Charities St Martin de Porres Senior Center and the Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network (A-SPAN). Please bring your donations and place them in the marked tubs in then Narthex. For health reasons, we ask that all items be new. Thank you.

Page 5 April 6th, 2014 Did you know?: Holy Week is the week preceding Easter and the final week of Lent. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday and ends with Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday. Holy Week includes Holy Thursday (also known as Maundy Thursday) and Good Friday, which, together with Holy Saturday, are known as the Triduum. During Holy Week, Christians commemorate the Passion of Christ, who died on Good Friday in reparation for the sins of mankind, and rose on Easter Sunday to give new life to all who believe. Thus, while Holy Week is solemn and sorrowful, it also anticipates the joy of Easter through the recognition of God's goodness in sending His Son to die for our salvation. Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphal entrance of Christ into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1-9), when palm branches were placed in His path, before His arrest on Holy Thursday and His Crucifixion on Good Friday. Troop 624 Distributes 3600 bags of Quality Mulch in One Day! Did you drive through "The Great White Canyon" of mulch bags last Saturday by the bike trail? It was the Troop 624 March Mulch Madness annual fundraiser. Customers get 50% more mulch at less cost than at the store. We deliver and stack to their homes. You can add your name to our future customer list through www.troop624.org. Cookies for Kairos The upcoming Kairos weekend retreat for women at Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women takes place in mid-April. The team presenting the retreat takes cookies in as an outward sign of our care for the prisoners. We need bakers to make cookies (as usual) to have enough for everyone. Anyone interested in helping to provide these cookies will be a wonderful help. There is one caveat: you must use recipes approved by the prison. If you did not pick up recipe lists at our table on Community Ministry Sunday, contact Jane Duffy at 703-892-6015 or [email protected]. and she will provide them to you. Most importantly, do NOT use any nuts, jimmies, M&Ms or bits of dried fruit in your cookie recipes. We need them no later than Sunday April 6 when there will be a collection table in the narthex. If you need to have them picked up contact Jane and it will be arranged. Many thanks to all who can help.
