Alan Henley benefitraises $110,000 By JANICE WOOD

Last July, just days before Oshkosh, Alan Henley, leader of the AeroShell Aerobatic Team, was injured at home while demonstrating a chin-up bar to his two young children.

His severe spinal injur y was the talk of AirVenture, as the air show com-munity gathered in Oshkosh. At the show, the idea of a benefit air show was borne.

Leading the ef for ts were Wayne Boggs, Sun ’n Fun’s air boss, and Bruce Turner, who soon recruited Bobbi Thompson as event coordinator. By the time Oshkosh was over, eight air show performers had committed to the air show, offering not only to fly for free, but to pay all their own expenses.

Turner was tasked with going to

Cecil Field in Jacksonville, Florida, which was chosen for the show because of its demographics and infrastructure, to talk the airport authority into help-ing. The Jacksonville Airport Authority stepped up, handling all marketing expenses and offering support.

Meanwhile, Thompson was busy recruiting performers. The show even-tually got commitments from 35 acts.

“Add in a legacy and a heritage flight and, by golly, we had an air show,” Thompson said.

But organizers worried whether attendance would be strong, since there had never been an air show at Cecil Field before. “We wondered, ‘would anyone attend?’,” she said.

Those worries proved unfounded. The benefit show, which was held the weekend before the opening of Sun ’n Fun, attracted 28,000 people.

It featured a 372-minute flight sched-ule. “That’s over six hours,” Thompson crowed. “There was a little something for everybody.”

The show raised $110,000 for the Alan Henley Foundation. The funds will be used to help defray Henley’s medical expenses, as well as help his family — wife Jen, daughter Skylar and son Brandon — face the economic chal-lenges ahead of them.

Even better news? Those aren’t the final numbers, as donations continue to come in, Thompson said.

“That’s phenomenal,” Henley said Saturday at Sun ’n Fun. “The whole

aviation community is a dedicated, car-ing community that takes care of each other. Having flown shows with all these performers over the years, I’m honored to be considered one of them. This will definitely help us out quite a bit,” he concluded.

Welcome to the city of Sun ’n Fun.During the week of the fly-in, the popu-

lation of Lakeland Linder Regional Airport swells to that of a small city. Included in that population are representatives from the Lakeland Police Department, the Lakeland Fire Department, the Polk County Sheriff’s Department, the Polk County Fire Department, Polk County Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Polk County Emergency Management Agency, the State Fire Marshal Bomb Squad, American Compliance Technologies — which handles aircraft recover and environmental clean-up — and even the FBI. At any given time, between 50 and 60 personnel are on site.

“If something should happen, we do have the equipment and personnel to take care of it,” said Lt. Jeff Wharton of the Lakeland Fire Department, who oversees the entire operation. “None of this could happen without the assistance of all the agencies. One agency could not have all the needed resources.”

Supplementing the work of the

professionals is a corps of Sun ’n Fun Emergency Response volunteers.

A variety of equipment is on hand, including a new foam suppression fire truck, ambulances, a police helicopter and a Medevac helicopter from Tampa

General Hospital.Obviously, the first responders

prepare for the worst case scenario of a plane crash or a plane going into a crowd. But the officers, firefighters and other emergency personnel also handle all the other calls, from people succumbing to heat exhaustion, to crowd control, to theft (although no thefts have been reported this year, there have been arrests made on the Sun ’n Fun grounds in the past, according to police officials.)

Communication is key to ensuring the safety of everyone at Sun ’n Fun.

“Everybody has their own function and we all know what we are going to do in the event of an emergency,” Wharton said.

“Any time you’ve got airplanes, cars, four-wheelers, motorcycles, golf carts and other vehicles, plus foot traffic — then you add in all the campers of all shapes and sizes — there’s always the potential for something to happen,” he continued. “Where we’re at Sun ’n Fun we go on the premise that it’s our own little city and that’s the way we treat it. That’s why we’re here 24-7.”

Cessna unveils new Skyhawk seating configuration

Cessna Aircraft Co. unveiled a new crew/cockpit resource management (CRM) training seat for the Skyhawk at this week’s show.

The CRM training seat is a single, forward facing seat positioned aft and center of the pilot and co-pilot seats. The new seat configuration was designed with airline training schools and univer-sity flight programs in mind, according to John Doman, vice president of world-wide propeller aircraft sales.

“Moving the second student forward and to the center of the aircraft increases his or her visibility of the flight deck and allows the student to be more involved in the flight as a crew member versus a passenger,” he explained.

Additional benefits include a 27-pound useful payload increase, expanded utility category envelope and possible lower insurance costs, he said.

Joyce and Ernie Sanborn, who head up the Tom Davis Education Center adjacent to the Florida Air Museum, have been extra busy this week scheduling tours for school children and tracking attendance.

They proudly announced Thursday that a new record had been hit, with 770 kids taking tours of the fly-in that day alone.

More than 2,430 kids were pre-registered for school tours, but the Sanborns expect to surpass that easily. “That doesn’t count the many walk-ins who have just shown up to tour the flight line,” Joyce said.

The Youth Activities area is packed with things for kids to do, including the flight simulator lab, movies, and more. Also on hand is Dean Mackey of Tampa,

known as the Paper Airplane Guy, who has been teaching the kids all week about the many different kinds of paper airplanes they can make.

Get in on the fun by heading over to the Tom Davis Education Center. It’s just past the AOPA Pavilion.

Debi and Bob Boies were adopting a rescue doberman from Tallahassee, Fla., but needed a way to transport the dog to their home in Landrum, S.C.

Their friend, Jon Wehrenberg, sug-gested he fly to Tallahassee to pick up the dog.

Upon completing the mission, Jon began researching animal rescues and found that roughly 5 million animals are euthanized each year. From that humble start, Debi and Jon teamed up to co-found Pilots N Paws.

The pair established an online bul-letin board at PilotsNPaws.org to pair pilots with rescue opportunities, as well as a not-for-profit corporation so pilots can deduct their costs as a charitable contribution.

More than 370 pilots have registered, for free, and more than 2,000 users have signed up. There is no pressure for any

pilot to fly any mission. If they are able and willing, the pilot and pet rescuer get together to hammer out details and the mission is accomplished.

Any animals can be rescued, not just dogs and cats. Debi and Jon know of a recent flight that rescued three snakes and a monster lizard from south Florida, while another flight carried a pot-bellied pig and a baby chick.

While Pilots N Paws encourages pilots to send in photos and share their experi-ences, there is no formal tracking of missions completed or animals rescued. “However, we are confident we’ve saved more than 1,000 animals,” Debi said.

Pilots to the rescue

Flying adventure specialist Air Journey is adding Cuba to its list of destinations.

The company is now accepting reg-istrations to take a limited number of GA pilots, flying their own airplanes, to Havana.

Trips will depar t the U.S. on a Thursday and return the following Monday. Air Journey has arranged special

tours of the island, including Old Havana, a Cuban cigar factory, and even a drink at one of Ernest Hemingway’s favorite spots, La Bodequita del Medio.

Air Journey also is finalizing plans for its next around the world expedition, which departs May 11.

PilotMall.com Aviation Superstore has been given the title “Official Aviation Superstore of Sun ’n Fun.”

PilotMall.com has forged a part-nership with Sun ’n Fun that includes operating a 4,000-square-foot aviation superstore in the former Gifts of Flight building on the Sun ’n Fun campus dur-ing the annual air show. The store is located near Hangar B.

PilotMall.com, which has been around for about 10 years and sells more than 4,000 products, will offer a wide

assortment of pilot supplies, educational materials, gifts and toys during the fly-in, according to Neil Glazer, president.

“We will have several thousand prod-ucts available, from education materials — which our company is very big on — to oxygen and portable GPS,” he said.

It also will carry Sun ’n Fun-branded merchandise, including T-shirts and more.

Meanwhile, Gifts of Flight locations will be at various spots around the air show grounds, such as in front of the

Sunset Grill, near the Main Gate, at the Florida Air Museum gift shop and elsewhere. Those shops also will carry official Sun ’n Fun merchandise.

Meanwhile, the PilotMall.com store will host numerous events throughout the week, including a Woman in Aviation Networking Night on Saturday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and an International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) fundraiser to support the air show performers Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Those events are open to the public, according

to Glazer. The store also will host an Authors

Corner with aviation celebrities, includ-ing Rod Machado and Max Trescott, in attendance.

Times for those events will be posted at the store.

“We thought it would be a good idea to give something back,” Glazer said.

The store will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the fly-in.

attend air shows and fly-ins is to do some comparison shopping for aircraft.

The experience isn’t complete without a test flight, but you need to be prepared to get the most out of the event.

First, realize you will have limited time in the plane, sometimes no more than 20 minutes, if that.

Most of the manufacturers and dis-tributors that offer demonstration flights ask that you sign up for them in advance. These flights are usually done early in the morning before the fly-in opens or later in the evening after the air show and most of the departures have taken place. Be flexible. Sometimes the demo flights will be conducted at an airport away from the show grounds. It’s important to find

out if that is the case so that you can arrange transportation.

Sometimes the flight will involve the salesperson, a pilot and a passenger or two. Be prepared for this. Sometimes the manufacturer will have a rule about not performing certain maneuvers, such as a full power-on stall, if the aircraft is fully loaded or there is a density altitude situation. Ask about this in advance so that there are no surprises.

Although it is impossible for you to memorize all the V speeds of each aircraft you intend to fly, try to familiarize yourself with as much technical informa-tion as possible before you step into the cockpit. Before the flight — such as when the aircraft is on static display — try to get into the cockpit so you can get a look at the panel layout.

Don’t get caught up in the avionics or play “find the instrument” during the flight. Instead, focus on how the aircraft feels and responds to control inputs. Let the salesperson work the radios.

Make sure the demo flight is done so that it conforms to the intended mission of the aircraft. If you are evaluating an air-plane to be used for a flight school, check its slow flight and stall characteristics. If you are evaluating it for your go-visit-the-grandkids-in-another-state airplane, check its cruise capabilities.

Most salespeople won’t let you get away without giving you marketing material about the aircraft’s specifica-tions. Hang on to this so that when you are away from the show and out of the heat of the moment you can review the information and compare it with other

aircraft. Also, get a business card so you can easily remember who you dealt with if you have a question later.

Make notes immediately after each flight on the marketing materials you were given. It’s a lot easier to do it right then than later when you are trying to remember which aircraft felt like what.

Ask about financing options. Some companies even have aircraft trade up programs.

If you can, seek out pilots who fly the same make and model you are looking at. You can leave notes for them on their airplanes at the show or, when you get home, go on the Internet and look for type club chat rooms. Most pilots will be flattered that you are asking their opinions and will be happy to share them with you.

Former foes reunite this week

Brigadier General Dan Cherry, USAF (Ret.), and Vietnamese MiG-21 pilot Nguyen Hong My will reunite at Sun ’n Fun 2009 for only the second time since Cherry’s F-4D Phantom shot down My over Hanoi in 1972.

Cherry traveled to Vietnam in April 2008 to meet My on a national Vietnamese television program that specializes in reuniting people.

My and Cherry will make multiple presentations during the fly-in, including a book signing for Cherry’s recently pub-lished book, “My Enemy, My Friend.”

Cherry was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force in July 1960 and went through pilot training in 1964, receiving an F-105 assignment with the 49th Tactical Fighter Wing at Spangdalem, Germany. In December 1966 he volunteered for his first tour of duty in Southeast Asia and flew 100 missions over North Vietnam. After returning to the United States as an instructor pilot in the F-105, he volunteered for his second tour of duty in 1972, this time assigned to fly the F-4D Phantom II. In April 1972, Cherry, flying in a flight of four Phantoms, shot down the MiG-21 piloted by My. It was Cherry’s only MiG “kill.”

Cherry went on to a successful career in the U.S. Air Force, reaching the rank of Brigadier General, and leading the USAF Thunderbirds Jet Demonstration

Team before retiring in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Throughout the years, how-ever, he wondered what had happened to the MiG pilot.

Friends of Cherr y’s contacted a Vietnamese reality television program, “Seems As Never Have Been Separated,” which specializes in reuniting people. The show was able to track down the MiG pilot, and the two met on the televi-sion show last April. A friendship was instantly formed.

“It is my hope that our remarkable meeting and reconciliation can somehow help the many Vietnam veterans who have had great difficulty in bringing clo-sure to their war experiences,” Cherry said. “Hong My and I both share the mutual hope that our unusual friendship can also be an inspiration to our two coun-tries to work toward better and friendlier relations through enhanced educational, cultural and business exchanges.”

Cherr y is now the president of Aviation Heritage Park in Bowling Green.

Entrance to the museum, which is open year-round, is free during the fly-in.

Boasting a variety of exhibits ranging from aircraft to Howard Hughes memo-rabilia, the museum also showcases an extensive collection of photographs and artifacts. The museum’s pavilion is the site of the air show’s evening programs and movies.

Earth Day is a global celebration designed to inspire appreciation for the Earth’s environment. It is traditionally celebrated on April 22 — which falls on the second day of this year’s Sun ’n Fun Fly-In.

Throughout the week, Sun ’n Fun will of fer “eco-friendly” activities, located in a new Green Space in the Southeast Exhibit Area, close to the Main Tram Station on the fly-in campus. This area is dedicated to green living, advancing eco-friendly technology and learning more about our environment, according to Kristin Burton, who spear-

headed the Earth Day activities.The Green Space, which will be open

daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., will have a kids area, an electric airplane on display and representatives from city and county agen-cies, as well as Earth Day International.

C o m p a n i e s t h r o u g h o u t t h e aviation industry are excited about the Green Space, Burton noted.

“It’s so new, they want to see

how they can fit in,” she said. “The green movement used to be the ‘cool’ movement — now it’s something that

everybody has to be a part of.”Aviation has already taken steps in

the “green” direction, she added.“For years , the L indbergh

Foundation has advocated and, through grants, funded research initiatives that balance innovations and the environ-ment such as the Green Investment Program that focuses on aviation bio-fuels and research,” she said. “Airlines are also testing fuels, de-icing chemi-cals and technologies that are more environmentally friendly.”

Part of the Earth Day activities is the evening program on Tuesday, put on by the Lindbergh Foundation, John and

Martha King and well-known air show per former Patty Wagstaf f. Dubbed “Over Africa: Low and Slow With

the Kenya Wildlife Service,” it chronicles how game wardens patrol the Kenya Wildlife Ser vice in planes, protecting endangered animals from poachers and human encroach-

ment. The Kings and Wagstaff traveled to Africa to train these pilots, with a grant from the Lindbergh Foundation. Former CNN correspondent Miles O’Brien, who also is a pilot, documented the mission and will participate in the program.

While this is the first year for Earth Day celebrations at Sun ’n Fun, Burton anticipates it will continue next year, even if Earth Day doesn’t fall during the fly-in.

“The whole month of April is dedicated to Earth Day activities, so anything you do in April can be called an Earth Day celebration,” she said.

Operated by the Polk County Visitors and Convention Bureau — also known as the Cen-tral Florida Visitors and Convention Bureau — the information center will be staffed throughout the show with specialists who can answer anything from where’s the best place to shop to where campers can wash their clothes. There will be four to six people avail-

able to answer questions, according to Janet Hart of the Visitors and Conven-tion Bureau.

The center will have a variety of information available, from available area lodging, including prices; attraction information and brochures; dining rec-ommendations; shopping suggestions;

and phones so visitors can make reservations,

she said.The center also

will have Florida air-port directories and

aeronautical charts available (while sup-plies last), as well as Florida road maps and guides.

The center also will be the site of the Internet Cafe this year. There will be four computers available at no charge.

The United States Army’s Golden Knights Parachute Team will celebrate its 50th anniversary by performing at Sun ’n Fun this weekend.

The Golden Knights plan to arrive Thursday, April 23, and will perform dur-ing the daily air shows Friday through Sunday.

The Golden Knights were formed in 1959 to compete in what was then the Soviet dominated sport of skydiving. Known as the Strategic Army Corps Sport Parachute Team, the 13 men performed so well that, in 1961, the U.S. Army officially recognized the team as the U.S. Army Parachute Team. Over the past 50 years, the Golden Knights have competed in parachute competitions around the globe, winning an unrivaled 425 championships, 21 national championships and eight world team titles.

Today, the Golden Knights consist of two demonstration teams — the Gold team and the Black team, which will perform at Sun ’n Fun.

The team’s primar y mission is to promote esprit de corps and support the Army’s recruiting goals. Each year, the Golden Knights travel the United States and abroad performing at air shows and sport-ing events delivering the Army’s message to future soldiers. The Golden Knights also bring that message to the general public by visiting high schools and working with local recruiters.

The Golden Knights will conduct two performances during the daily air shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Each perfor-mance will include maneuvers performed from an altitude of 12,500 feet designed to demonstrate the amount of control a jumper has while falling at speeds in excess of 120 mph.

You can with a Flight Line Radio, which made its debut at Sun ’n Fun last year.

“Flight Line Radio will be bigger and better than last year,” promised Don Costanza, the company’s director of marketing.

The radios, which are the size of a credit card, have been customized for the show with the Sun ’n Fun logo.

The radios have three channels: One picks up transmissions from the tower and announcer’s stand; the

second broadcasts Sun ’n Fun radio; and the third broadcasts Flight Line Internet Radio, an Internet-based radio station that’s specifically geared to general aviation. The radio station will be broadcasting from the grounds during the show, Costanza added.

The second and third channels will have programming 24-7 during the show, Costanza said, while attendees will be able to hear everything from the air show announcer’s stand no mat-ter where they are on the grounds.

The radios, which cost $15, come complete with a headset and battery.

Extra batteries will be available for sale at all Gifts of Flight locations.

“The beauty of this is that the radio you pick up at Sun ’n Fun will also work at any other show we are at, such as this summer’s AirVenture,” Costanza said. “And if you picked up a radio last year, it will work this year as well.”

Flight Line Radio also broadcasts at other events, such as the Indianapolis Air Show, the Capital Air Show in California, the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day equestrian event in Lexington, USA gymnastics events and more.

The radio station will have more than 30 volunteers covering every aspect of the fly-in, according to Radio Chairman Dave Shallbetter.

“We’ll have updates on news and happenings around the fly-in, great inter views with aviation notables, schedules of events, interviews with sponsors, vendors and guests, live cov-erage of the daily air show, and remote

broadcasts of the evening programs and aviation safety seminars from the FAA Production Studios.”

Women in Aviation will return this year with its special segment, “Women Shine at Sun ’n Fun,” he said, adding guests include Patty Wagstaf f, Julie Clark, John and Martha King, and Peggy Chabrian, the association’s president.

Also returning are Jeb Burnside, Dave Higdon and Jack Hodgson, the men behind Uncontrolled Airspace Podcasts, who will do two podcasts from the show, one on Tuesday evening and the other on Sunday morning.

The station has added even more podcasts to its programming line-up, Shallbetter said.

“Listeners can stay tuned after the air show for a different podcast each day,” he said.

“Tuesday will be Uncontrolled Airspace, Wednesday will be The Finer Points of Flying with Jason Miller, Thursday is The Pilot’s Flight Podlog, Friday is a special gathering of aviation podcasters — kind of an open mic night — and Saturday will be Airspeed Online with Steve Force,” he continued.

Radio programming also will be

broadcast on Flight Line Radio, which also can tune in to the announcer’s stand during the air shows.

pride and joy to the crowds at Sun ’n Fun, you also must take steps to pro-tect your plane, especially when you aren’t around.

“Do not touch” placards are a must. These are provided for display aircraft when you register. These cardboard sleeves slip over the propeller.

Verify the security of your tie-downs. If you use single stakes, insert them into the ground at a diagonal. A stake inserted on a diagonal takes more force to lift out of the ground than one driven straight into the ground. You may want to invest in the “claw” type of tie-down. Instead of a single stake in the ground, there are three at dif-ferent angles. As the name implies, it resembles a claw when used properly. According to pilots who use them, they are easier to install and remove, yet provide sturdier protection than the one-stake varieties.

Make sure gust locks are installed correctly.

Do not leave anything near your airplane that can be thrown, such as a football or a Frisbee, a model glider or even extra tie-down stakes. Also don’t

leave any cleaning products that have a spray trigger around. One unsuper-vised kid is all it takes to do damage. Put these items out of sight.

Be careful of the position of your propeller. Experienced campers recom-mend that you turn the propeller so the blades are vertical. Someone walk-ing between rows at night is less likely to hit the blade.

In adverse weather, such as high winds, do not try to “save your airplane.” If the wind is blowing hard enough, the plane could flip over and land on you. The aircraft can be replaced. You can’t.

Supervise the refueling of your air-craft.

Take all the expensive portable items, such as yoke-mounted GPS and head-sets, out of your cockpit. Either lock them up or hide them well. Although most people are honest, there are some folks who see large events as an opportunity to steal.

Taxi a little bit slower than you would normally, especially if there are lots of people around. Some of them may be aviation novices and may walk with their backs to the aircraft or on taxiways instead of on footpaths, and could step into the line of a wing.

One of the oldest and most beautiful forms of flight was first test-piloted by a sheep, a duck and a rooster. In 1783 the Montgolfier brothers loaded this menag-erie aboard a balloon and launched it up, up and away. Later that year the brothers took to the skies in a balloon made of paper and silk.

Modern hot air balloons will be showcased early Saturday morning with a balloon launch. Pilots participating in this launch are part of a unique group of seasoned air show veterans from around the world, according to Sun ’n Fun officials.

Hot air balloon pilots carry an FAA issued pilot’s license in the “Lighter than Air” category. In addition to passing traditional written tests, a pilot is trained in balloon mechanics, safety, procedures, and the unique flight characteristics of balloons.

Balloon events at Sun ’n Fun include limited daily demonstration flights from the Ultralight field by commercial firms — usually at 7 a.m. Saturday is the “big” event when dozens of balloons will be launched in a traditional “hare and hound” race. As the name suggests, this event involves chasing a single bal-loon after it takes off. This balloon acts as the “hare” and floats in the air for a short while before the other balloons are allowed to take off. The balloons that follow are the “hounds.” The winning balloon is the one that lands closest to the “hare.”

This is a sight you won’t want to miss,

but you’ll have to get up early.Weather permitting, the balloon

launch takes place between 6:30 a.m. and 8 a.m., Saturday, April 25.

There also will be a Balloon Glow — where the balloons inflate, but do not take off — during the Friday night air show.

A gathering place for airline pilots

According to Rogers, more than 500 pilots signed in last year, rep-resenting 40 airlines, both domestic and overseas.

“The tent provides an opportu-nity for us to visit and share expe-riences, reminisce about our airline days and discuss common problems,” said Rogers. “We owe many thanks to the Quiet Birdmen, two doors down from us, who were respon-sible for getting most of their retired pilots over to sign in. We’re hoping this year will be as good, despite the economy.”

General aviation faces an acute set of issues today — issues so serious and urgent that they could have a devastating effect on our future.

Urban pressures on airports, onerous regulatory proposals, lack of commitment of general federal revenues to fund FAA operations and infrastructure, and an increasingly negative public perception of GA as “jets for the rich” have brought GA to a defining moment.

In this economic downturn, lawmak-ers are looking for ways to pay for the services the government must provide, including those of fered by the FAA. President Obama’s budget outline calls for “direct user charges” — user fees — to raise more than $7 billion each year. Add to that unfounded security fears that prompt government agencies to propose treating GA like the airlines, and we could be in real trouble.

Aviation is vital to the public good, so it makes sense that all Americans help pay for FAA operations, air traffic control, airport infrastructure, and other vital aviation-related services through the general fund that everyone contributes to. And general aviation, with its smaller aircraft and personal nature, is nothing like the airlines, so it simply makes no sense to impose expensive, impractical, airline-style security rules on GA.

General aviation pilots understand these things inherently. But many of the people who ultimately make these deci-sions do not. To change that perception, AOPA has launched one of the largest and most important initiatives in the

association’s history — General Aviation Serves America.

Decision makers, opinion leaders, and the general public need to know who we really are, what we do, and how our ability to fly strengthens the American economy. Located near the main gate, the International Visitors Center pro-vides a “home away from home” for the hundreds of international visitors who come from around the globe to attend Sun ’n Fun.

Every year, 30 to 40 multi-lingual volunteers greet more than 1,000 visitors representing more than 60 countries. “At any given time, visitors may hear five to eight languages being spoken in the tent, including German, French, Portuguese, Spanish, and Jap-anese,” said Michele Van Dorn, Inter-national Visitor Chairperson.

As visitors register, they receive a collectors item trading pin, which is a much sought after souvenir. The center provides assistance with everything from medical needs, hotel and transportation arrangements, and translation services. There also is a message board so international guests can post messages ranging from planes for sale to saying hello to someone they met last year.

You’ve just spent a wonderful day at Sun ’n Fun and are ready to fly home.

During your preflight inspection you notice the nose strut of your Cessna 182 is completely flat. All is not lost — one quick call to the Aircraft Emergency Repair Team can get you on your way.

This year the team is made of up approximately 15 to 20 volunteers,

according to Charlie Bukoski who, with his wife Judy, heads the team.

“We don’t do big repairs, but we can help with little ones, like replacing fluids or charging a battery,” he said. “The busi-est time for us is right after the air show ends because that is when people realize that they’ve left the master switch on and the battery is dead.”

Most of the volunteers are A&P mechanics so they can at least tell you which tool you need to borrow to take care of the problem. Tools are kept in the emergency repair kiosk, which is at the approach end of Runway 5.

“We try to stay away from doing the repairs ourselves, but if the aircraft owner asks, sometimes we will assist,” he said, noting last year the team helped 83 people. “The bulk of those issues were problems with dead batteries, brakes, and flat tires.”

Hours are from 8 a.m. to an hour or so after the air show. If a plane has serious issues, volunteers can have it towed to one of the FBOs at the airport for more extensive repairs.

Do you need a particular part for that restoration project in your hangar? Is the sport of the hunt for that item part of the

fun for you?If the answer is yes, then you should

stop by the Parts Exchange (PX), located in Paradise City, also known as the Ultralight area.

Items for sale come from individuals and aviation businesses from around the country. All items are related to avia-tion, which means you’ll find everything from parts to books and tools. State law

prohibits the sale of tires or batteries.Those wishing to sell parts at the PX

must purchase special tags for the items to be consigned. Tags are 50 cents.

All transactions are cash only, as there is no way to run credit cards at the Parts Exchange. However, there are a number of cash machines on the show grounds. In previous years, people who were after larger ticket items, such as

part of an airframe that cost $300, made daily trips to the cash machines until they had the right amount of cash to make the purchase, according to volunteers.

The PX is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to noon Sunday.

A registration credential (wristband) is required to drop off items for sale or to shop at the PX during the fly-in.

Splash-In returns to Fantasy of FlightThe popular Splash-In returns to

nearby Lake Agnes in Polk City, adjacent to the internationally known aviation attraction, Fantasy of Flight.

While seaplanes and amphibians will be at Lake Agnes throughout the week, the official one-day Splash-In is Thursday, April 23. That’s when pilots will partici-pate in competitions and show off their prized planes.

Landings are limited to the lake. No landings on Fantasy of Flight’s grass strip are allowed.

Because the lake is on private prop-erty, camping for Splash-In participants will be allowed, however.

Splash-In par ticipants receive a special packet entitling them to reduced admission to Fantasy of Flight. Fantasy of Flight is located just off Interstate Highway 4 northeast of Sun ’n Fun, making it an easy drive or flight from Lakeland Linder Regional Airport and the Sun ’n Fun site.

Buses will provide transportation from the Sun ’n Fun grounds to the lake. Cost is $3 each way.

Seaplanes also will be on display on the Sun ’n Fun grounds just north of Paradise City (the Ultralight area).

Steel drum band adds to spring break atmosphere

Rythm Trail, a steel drum band, will perform daily from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Main Gate and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Sunset Grill.

The band is led by Ephraim Adams, who has been playing steel drums — also known as “playing pan” — for more than 18 years, since he was a student in Guyana. He soon became a well-known musician in Guyana, and a member of that country’s national steel band movement. He emigrated to the U.S. in 2003.

Workshops slatedThe Sun ’n Fun Workshops are a

boon not only to A&Ps and IAs, but to amateur aircraft builders also.

The free workshops are located in the Central Florida Aerospace Acad-emy and in tents around the Buehler Restoration Center.

Many of the workshops have been approved by the FAA for credit towards the annual requirements for IA renewal and the A&P Awards Program.

Operating times are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Some workshops operate continuously, while others have scheduled programs. Check at the workshop information booth in the CFAA building for times and workshop locations.

Workshops include: Woodwork; Avionics/Electrical; Basic Sheet Metal; Cable Swaging; Composites; Com-puter Resources; Engines; Fabric Cov-ering; Metal Shaping; Propeller Carving; Sport Planes; and Welding, both elec-tric and gas.

Sun ’n Fun’s chief judge shares the tricks of the tradeBy THOMAS F. NORTON

How do you judge airplanes in six very different categories for a variety of very different awards?

“Objectively,” said Leonard Kress (right), chief judge at Sun ’n Fun.

“It’s easy to be subjective, though,” he added. “That’s why we follow EAA judging standards.”

Those standards are outlined in a “scoring decision tree” that leads to scores ranging from zero (major deficiency) to 10 (perfect, impossible to do better).

“Deficiency is defined as a safety item with potential for catastrophic flight fail-ure,” Kress explained, pointing out that very few owners with airplanes in such bad shape ask to be judged.

At the other end of the scale, a 10 is utterly flawless, a very difficult level to achieve — but far from impossible. In between, the guidelines list nine other pos-sible scores. Most owners who ask to be judged have airplanes that are well above average, generally scoring in the seven (strong show quality) to 10 range.

As the judges make their rounds, there is no discussion.

“Points aren’t awarded by consensus,” Kress said, but by each judge — up to 50 of them — filling out individual score sheets.

The scores are added up and compared only after judging is completed.

A newcomer to the judging team isn’t expected to know all of this, Kress said. The first year, a co-chairman accompanies a newcomer and critiques the scores arrived at, which are not actually used. When the scores become consistent, the candidate becomes a full member of the team.

Airplanes are judged in six categories: custom-built, vintage, warbirds, ultralight and light sport, rotorcraft and seaplanes.

The first question asked by a judge is whether the airplane being looked at is airworthy. If not, of course, it earns a zero and there’s nothing more to be done. Assuming it is, however, the next ques-tion is whether it’s better than average. A no leads to choosing whether it is very crude, crude, functional or average. Each of those terms goes with a successively

higher score, from one to four. An airplane judged to be better than

average is considered on yet another set of questions. Is it equal to, or better than, factory new? If not, but of above average craftsmanship, it falls into the five, six or seven scoring level: slightly above aver-age, solidly above, or showing pride of workmanship.

If, however, a judge gives a yes answer to the “factory new” question, the next step is the really hard one, Kress said.

A choice must be made as to whether the airplane has very fine workmanship but apparent flaws, outstanding workmanship with flaws that are difficult to detect, or is — and this is a 10 — “flawless in all respects.”

Looking at the standards published by EAA, significant differences are seen from

one category to another. Ten pages are devoted to vintage aircraft, for example, while others may require as few as six pages. “The awards are somewhat dif-ferent” from category to category, Kress pointed out.

Sometimes owners will ask judges to critique their airplanes.

“That’s a real can of worms,” Kress stated. “After all, no mother ever had an ugly baby. People put their lives into these things” and no judge wants to face a restored airplane’s “mother” with a list of flaws.

Take a ride in a WarbirdGet your hands on histor y this

week when you take a ride in one of the Commemorative Air Force’s vintage Warbirds.

Historic aircraft from the CAF fleet will be on display and available for rides all week. Rides can be purchased at Hangar 57, the CAF’s membership tent, on the Warbird Ramp.

Rides are available in the P-51D Mustang “Red Nose,” B-24A Liberator “Ol’ 927,” and B-25 “Yellow Rose.” A ride includes a passenger briefing and per-sonal introduction to the aircraft. Flight time is 20 to 30 minutes depending on the aircraft.

B-24A Liberator rides are $450, B-25 rides are $375 and P-51D Mustang rides are $1,195. Rides are limited and subject to weather.

On display this week is the CAF Dixie Wing’s SBD-5 Dauntless, one of only two currently flying in the world; the CAF Memphis Squadron’s Hawker Sea Fury FB.11; and the CAF Florida Wing’s two L-17 Navions, “Allie-Gator” and “Misty Blue.” Expect to see other CAF and CAF member-owned aircraft on display. (Aircraft participation is subject to change).

Youth ActivitiesThe Tom Davis Education Cen-

ter offers fun, educational oppor-tunities to young aviation enthu-siasts.

The Youth Activities tent located outside the Davis Center is filled with a variety of interest-ing aviation-based activities, while inside, children of all ages will be fascinated by the flight simulator lab, which boasts 33 flight simula-tors this year, according to Joyce Sanborn who, with her husband, Ernie, oversees the center. Chil-dren of all ages are encouraged to use the simulators, she added.

In the center’s great room, avia-tion movies will be shown, while a pizza lunch will be served to school kids for just $3.

In the tent, children can make a wooden wing rib, as well as kites, windsocks, parachutes, paper rockets and a variety of paper airplanes. Coloring sheets will be available for the younger kids.

Two motion simulators, Kid Air II and Kid Air III, also will be avail-able outside the tent. Also return-ing is Scamp, which kids “can get into and see what it’s like being in a small airplane,” Sanborn said.

The center is also where school tours begin and end.

Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Volunteers prefer parents stay with young children, while older kids — middle school aged and up — can participate in the center’s activities on their own.

Patty Wagstaff and Miles O’Brien, pres-ent “Over Africa, Low and Slow with the Kenya Wildlife Service.”

Game wardens who fly for the Kenya Wildlife Service routinely fly low and slow in small single engine airplanes over the spectacular parks of Kenya to protect their endangered inhabitants from the threat of poachers and human encroach-ment. Wagstaff and the Kings travelled to Africa to train these pilots with funding provided by the Lindbergh Foundation. O’Brien, a former CNN correspondent and freelance producer/director/reporter, as well as a board member of the founda-tion, documented the mission every step of the way.

“Over Africa!” is a wild, fun ride — with a serious purpose — filled with some larger-than-life characters who, in their own small way, are helping save the planet.

The second annual LoPresti Innovation Award was presented Friday to Jim Bede Jr. of Bede Corp., for his design of retractable speedpants that open on the ground, but close in flight to completely cover a plane’s tires.

The first version of the speedpants will fit RV-7s and RV-10s, said Rj Siegel, LoPresti COO.

“These make a big dif ference,” Siegel said. “They help get more speed without adding strain or stress. It’s essentially free speed.”

Winning the LoPresti award means the winner is given support by LoPresti throughout the year to “productize” its innovation. Siegel said the speedpants will be available for sale by Oshkosh, with the uncertified versions selling for $1,995 a pair.

Siegel and Bede hope to expand the speedpants to more designs, including certified aircraft. The first will be the Grumman AA5, Siegel noted.

The FAA awarded a Type Certificate this week to Lycoming Engines’ IO-390-A1A6 engine.

Lycoming developed the new engine in response to customers who requested a higher horsepower, four-cylinder engine. For several years, the uncertified version of a 390 Lycoming engine, the IO-390-X, has been powering many homebuilt and kit aircraft in the experimental market.

The certified IO-390, at 312 to 315 pounds and rated 210 hp at 2,700 rpm, uses the same footprint and delivers more horsepower than the IO-360-A engines. The four-cylinder, fuel-injected IO-390-A1A6 includes a robust rotating system, specifically developed cylinders, tuned induction system, roller tappets, Slick Start ignition, and front facing fuel servo. Following this first model, Lycoming will continue to certify different versions of the IO-390 to fit customer requirements.

Lycoming expects to begin shipping the engines in May.

In other news, Lycoming officials tapped T&T Aviation Inc., of Washington, Pa., as the final product development and flight test partner for its new light sport engine, the IO-233-LSA.

The engine starts with the O-235 rotating system, but evolves consider-ably from there, according to Lycoming officials. The IO-233 has a new crankcase design including roller tappets, a new sump and accessory housing design, throttle body fuel injection and electronic ignition. It will be rated at 115 hp at 2,800 rpms with other ratings for 100, 90 and 80 horsepower.

The engine will be approved for auto fuel, company officials said, adding they expect to ship a limited number of non-certified IO-233-LSAs by the end of the year.

New Lycoming engine certified, work continues on LSA engine

Piper Aircraft now offers the Garmin G1000 as an option on the Meridian, the company’s flagship, six-seat cabin-class turboprop.

Initial deliveries began this week.Garmin’s Synthetic Vision Technology

(SVT) also will be offered as standard on the Meridians equipped with the G1000 option. SVT presents a 3D depiction of terrain, obstacles, and traffic on the PFD

so the images replicates what pilots would see outside the cockpit on a clear day.

“The G1000 gives the Meridian a new

brain, taking the Meridian to a whole new level of performance,” said Bob Kromer, vice president of sales and marketing.

The Meridian currently features Avidyne’s glass cockpit, the FlightMax Entegra flight deck, as standard equip-

ment, as do the Malibu Mirage, Matrix, Seneca V, the Saratoga II TC, and Piper 6X. All other Piper models of fer the Avidyne system as optional equipment.

As another year of Sun ’n Fun draws to a close, AOPA is already looking forward to its return to Florida later this year for the AOPA Aviation Summit, to be held in Tampa Nov. 5-7.

The summit’s collaborative and hands-on environment is designed to bring together pilots, aircraft owners, aviation businesses, students, and policy makers and give all of them new power to shape the future of general aviation.

The AOPA Aviation Summit will con-tinue to host one of general aviation’s premier trade shows, with hundreds of vendors filling the Tampa Convention

Center’s exhibit hall, offering everything from aircraft, engines, and avionics to pilot supplies and even jewelry.

The aircraft display, once again hosted by the Peter O. Knight Airport on Davis Islands, will encompass an even broader array of the dif ferent types of aircraft that comprise general aviation — from the familiar fixed-wing aircraft to helicopters, and even lighter-than-air.

The educational opportunities that pilots have come to expect are still there, as well. Safety education from

the AOPA Air Safety Foundation, tips on frugal flying and places to fly go, and help hanging on to your medical certification are all being offered.

At the heart of the Summit — and what sets it apart from previous AOPA annual conventions — will be the oppor-tunity for attendees to interact directly with policy makers and opinion lead-ers who can shape general aviation’s destiny.

“Now more than ever we need to take control of our future so we can control our fate,” concluded Fuller.

Save the date for first AOPA Aviation Summit

Aspen Avionics unveiled this week several upgrades to its Evolution Flight Display product line, including a flush mount kit that enables customers to mount the EFDs flush with their instru-ment panels. The kits will be available June 15. Price: $390.

Also unveiled was an Analog Converter Unit (ACU), which is used to integrate legacy analog systems, such as autopilots and VHF radios, with the all-digital Evolution system. The ACU will be available by the end of the year at a list price under $2,000.

The upgrade most requested by cus-

tomers, according to Aspen officials, was a way to eliminate all mechanical flight instruments, so the company devel-oped an Autopilot Attitude Reference Source Replacement, which will replace mechanical gyros that drive most popu-lar GA autopilot systems.

The first version is designed to replace the KI-256 attitude indicator used in the Bendix-King family of auto-pilots. It is expected to be available in the first half of 2010 at a price under $5,000.

“When four of us had a hard time finding a plane we wanted to buy together,” says AirplanesDirect.com CEO Gary Lux, “we came up with the idea of starting an aircraft marketplace that would make the search much easier.”

From that, AirplanesDirect.com, an Asheville, N.C. company, came into being.

Launched just four weeks ago, the company, which signed up as a Gold Level sponsor here at Sun ’n Fun, hopes to emulate Amazon.com in the aircraft marketplace.

“There is more technology available online to purchase a $5 book than a

$500,000 aircraft,” Lux said.In addition to the four founders,

another 22 people work in various areas of the company, 12 as contract coders.

Among the myriad features the website employs is an acronym decoder. Pass your cursor over NDH, for exam-ple, and a listing pops up revealing the definition “No Damage History.” This feature is aimed squarely at the new aviator who may not be up on traditional aviation jargon.

If the booth you are working at Sun ’n Fun sells items geared toward World War II, you might as well dress the part.

Joy Jones, from Jacksonville, Fla., is helping out at Belle & Blade Historical/Aviation Video. The company carries aviation movies, many from World War II.

Jones also is a World War II re-enactor. “The idea is living history,” she said, explaining the re-enactors wear uniforms and tell the stories of veterans.

It’s important to collect the stories now, she said, because so many of that generation are heading west.

Thursday’s attire was reminiscent of the over-sized flight suits worn by mem-bers of the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP) in the early days of the war.

“The WASP also wore blue uniforms, known as the Santiago Blues, but those are impossible to find now,” she said. “I wear the costume to honor Connie Reynolds, who passed away not too long ago.”
