Don’t miss the new Hangar Echo and Parts ExchangeBy BEN SCLAIR

Think you’ve seen it all at Sun ’n Fun 2010? If you haven’t visited Hangar Echo, or the Parts Exchange, you are missing out.

Located between Exhibit Hangar D and the campground are two new gems.

There are two ways to get there — a nice shaded walk through the nature trail on the airshow side of the exhibit halls or by following the road to the south of the exhibit hangars toward the campground.

There is a tremendous number of par ts, books, clothes, memorabilia, engines, camping equipment and more. In fact, according to Parts Exchange Chair Wendy Gaynor, one man built an experimental airplane entirely from parts, plans and equipment acquired at the Parts Exchange.

The number of items for sale this year is up over past years, according to Gaynor, but she’ll not be able to offer specifics until after the show.

When choosing an aviation headset, consider this. Bose was the first to establish the use of active noise reducing headsets in aviation almost 20 years ago. And since then, we’ve continued to

be the headset pilots prefer year after year.

Today’s Bose Aviation Headset delivers a highly acclaimed combination of noise reduction, clearer audio and comfort that remains unmatched. And for nine years in a row, it’s been rated #1 in Professional Pilot’s annual survey, claiming this year’s top honors for comfortable fit, clarity and technical advancement. It’s this rare combination of benefits that other manufacturers find most difficult to duplicate and what continues to

distinguish the Aviation Headset from other ANR headsets.

Noise reduction. Clearer audio. Advanced technology effectively reduces aircraft engine noise, so you’ll hear more of what you want to hear. All with the clearer audio that has made Bose the most respected name in sound. The Aviation Consumer reports the performance “sets it apart from the pack.”

We take comfort seriously. Exemplary noise reduction and clearer audio mean little if a headset is uncomfortable. So the

lightweight Aviation Headset has been engineered to be the most comfortable headset you can wear without compromising on noise reduction or audio performance. Flyer Magazine says the Aviation Headset “is the closest thing to not wearing a headset at all.”

U.S. Air Force AWACS crews, who often fly 14-hour shifts, tested many different ANR headsets. They chose Bose. Made in the U.S.A., the Aviation Headset is fully certified to FAA TSO standards.

Convenient Bose payment plan. Use your own major credit card to make 12 easy payments, with no interest charges from Bose.*

Take our 30-day Test Flight. The best way to truly appreciate the Bose Aviation Headset is to experience it in your aircraft. That’s where it was engineered to be at its most effective. Fly with it just once, and you’ll understand right away why Bose is the industry leader, and why pilots rate us #1 time and time again.

GA wins user fee battle — for now — but new issues loomBy JANICE WOOD

Over the past year, AOPA President Craig Fuller has been busy traveling the country talking to pilots and spreading the good news about aviation, as well as urging pilots to “get engage” to help GA thrive.

“I logged over 350 hours last year,” he told a crowd at Thursday evening’s AOPA Town Hall meeting.

A topic at many of those meetings was the threat of user fees, which has been hanging over the GA industry for years. At least year’s AOPA Town Hall meeting at Sun ’n Fun, Fuller reported on efforts to fight user fees, as well as bolster GA’s image in Washington, D.C., and around the country. That was when the organiza-tion teamed with other alphabet groups to create GA Serves America, a lobbying effort that featured ads by well-known actor — and pilot — Harrison Ford.

“We wanted to show people in Washington that we are willing to stand up for ourselves,” reported Fuller, a Washington insider who has worked at the White House.

And standing up was imperative after the administration proposed a $9.6 billion user fee in last year’s budget. “The user fee battle has been fought over and over again, but nothing like $9.6 billion,” Fuller said. “Obviously we took a dim view of that.”

As the alphabet groups worked to fight against user fees, they got some support in Congress, with the House of Representatives creating a GA Caucus, which is now 120 members strong, fol-lowed by the creation of a Senate Caucus, which now has 24 members. “A number of them say they are committed to general aviation,” he said, noting, “they want to understand our needs. We work with them on a daily basis.”

And the advertising campaign with Harrison Ford, which included every-thing from online ads to billboards in Washington, D.C., paid off. “We walked into the offices of President Obama’s advi-sors, Larry Summers and Valerie Jarrett, and Summers said ‘uh-oh, here comes that Harrison Ford group.’”

Fuller admits he was a bit put out at first, thinking that AOPA has been around for 70 years, but is “all of a sudden that Harrison Ford group.” Then he realized that it showed that AOPA — and GA — had been linked, successfully, with a person that the folks in the White House respected and would listen to.

“It helped the administration under-stand our message,” he said, noting that officials in every department, from the Department of Transportation to the White House, responded favorably to the ads.

They also responded favorably to AOPA’s brand of lobbying, which pointed out that the elected officials had a choice, whereas pilots didn’t. “We told them that if they proposed user fees, we would fight them and we would not back down,” Fuller said. “Or they had the choice to actually look at the issues that are really facing aviation and work together to solve them.”

Knowing the fight would take three or four years, Fuller and other GA advo-cates pointed out that in that amount of time the government could actually have a record of achievement in everything from the modernization of the Air Traffic Control system to keeping airports open to rebuilding GA, which is vital to the economy.

When the budget was released, GA advocates eagerly began to study it look-ing for user fees. They weren’t there.

“The proposal that had hung over our heads all last year had just vaporized,” Fuller said, quickly reminding the crowd that they still must be vigilant against user fees as “bad ideas in Washington don’t just go away.”

“User fees aren’t listed in the 2011-2012 budget cycle, which gives us two years to work on other issues,” he said, noting there is no shortage of issues, rang-ing from finding an alternative to 100LL

to security issues to through-the-fence concerns.

But getting time to work on those issues “wouldn’t have happened without a lot of involvement from pilots,” Fuller said.

Also helping is a new cooperation among all of GA’s alphabet groups, includ-ing AOPA, EAA, NBAA, NATA and others. “We’re finding more and more ways to work together,” Fuller said. “And the one issue that worries us most is how to stop the decline in the pilot population. A couple of years ago, there were more than 800,000 pilots; now it’s below 600,000.”

He noted that the economy is part of the problem. But there’s also a marketing problem.

“We know that there are hundreds of thousands of people who have a passion for flying and would love to be engaged, but they are not doing it,” he said. “Or they started flight training, but didn’t continue. We’ve got to find a better way to to get people trained.”

Meanwhile, Fuller plans to continue his travels around the country, with the intention of visiting every member of the GA Caucuses in the House and Senate, as well as pilots from one coast to another.

“The message is ‘let’s get engaged,’” he said. “There are a lot of ways to do that from talking to elected officials, to just letting people know you are a pilot and explaining what you do and why you like it.”

The P2006T, Tecnam Twin, has received FAA certification just in time for Sun ’n Fun.

The twin earned its certification for VFR and analogue IFR operations last week. The aircraft also was approved for glass panel IFR certification in Europe, and this is expected to be completed in the U.S. over the next few months, company officials said.

The P2006T has been well received by the aviation com-munity, particularly flight schools looking for an alternative twin aircraft on the flight line, officials note, adding Tecnam North America, distributors for United States and Canada, has been touring the country in a demo P2006T, and collecting orders along the way.

While at Sun ’n Fun, learn about learning to fly

You’re already here at Sun ’N Fun today, so it’s a pretty safe bet that you love airplanes even if you’re not a pilot. You may have thought flying was never something you could do, but as you’ll see as you wander around today, you couldn’t be more wrong!

For starters, try visiting the AOPA Pavilion, next to the Florida Air Museum, at 10 a.m. to hear flight instructor and aviation humorist Rod Machado talk about what it takes to learn to fly. Trust us, there’s nothing you can say or do at the controls of a plane that Machado hasn’t already heard or experienced — and turned into a funny story.

At 11:30 a.m., Machado will make his way to AOPA’s Big Yellow Tent and the set of AOPA Live, AOPA’s stream-ing internet coverage of Sun ’n Fun, for more on learning to fly.

Machado’s is one of several sessions on AOPA Live geared to learning to fly. Stop by the tent for up-to-the-moment information on AOPA Live program-ming.

You’ll have a chance to hear Ravi, a Virginia-based guitar instructor who was bitten by the flying bug late, and who has some unique perspectives on the similarity between learning a musical instrument and learning to fly. He’ll talk

about why everyone should learn to fly.Jeff Skiles, first officer aboard US

Air ways Flight 1547, which ditched successfully in the Hudson River, will be on AOPA Live to talk about the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Young Eagles program, which gives school-aged kids the opportunity to go up for their first flight in a general aviation aircraft. Skiles and Flight 1547 captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger are the national spokesmen for Young Eagles.

Another EAA-led effort to get people flying, International Learn To Fly Day,

will also be highlighted on AOPA Live. May 15 is International Learn To Fly Day, and AOPA will be joining EAA and pilot organizations around the world in urging their members to take someone who’s never been up in a GA aircraft flying on that day.

If you’re the type of person who pre-fers to do your own research, stop by the Big Yellow Tent, where AOPA staff members can introduce you to the Let’s Go Flying website. Whether you’re still trying to decide if learning to fly is for you, or you’re ready to take the plunge, Let’s Go Flying has something for you.

The website has lots of information about what’s involved in learning to fly and a database of more than 3,500 flight schools around the country to help you find one close to home. While at the tent, if you’re already a student pilot, be sure to ask an AOPA staff member about how you can get six months free access to AOPA’s member benefits, including six issues of Flight Training magazine.

Learning to fly is a tremendously rewarding challenge, and there are few places as good as Sun ’n Fun to see all of your options and immerse yourself in the community of pilots.

Vertical Power debuts EFIS/Electronic Circuit Breaker System

Vertical Power is introducing the VP-X system at Sun ’n Fun this week. The VP-X uses elec-tronic circuit breakers to simplify wiring and provide advanced electrical system capabilities, company officials said.

The VP-X integrates with Advanced Flight Systems, GRT Avionics, and MGL Avionics EFIS products, allowing pilots to monitor the status of individual devices and the entire electrical system right from the EFIS.

Avionics, lights, trim, and flaps can all be controlled using stan-dard switches and the EFIS. The

VP-X is for use with experimental and light sport aircraft. The VP-X replaces 80-year-old thermal breaker technology

with modern solid-state electronic circuit breakers, company officials said, noting the breakers can detect short circuits,

over-current conditions, and open-circuit faults.

More than 30 power circuits provide enough capacity to wire a typical RV (including the RV-10), Glastar, Lancair, Legacy, Velocity, Cozy, or other two- to four-place experimental aircraft of ficials add.

The VP-X retails for $1,800, and will begin shipping in this month. A complete wiring harness, including over 600 feet of wire and connectors, is also available.

See it for yourself at Vertical Power’s exhibit in Hangar D, Space 79.

Town Hall Meeting with Congressman Sam Graves

By BEN SCLAIR

The Sun ’n Fun Fly-In doesn’t happen without the tireless effort of thousands of volunteers. Period.

Each year, to blow off a little steam and celebrate their combined efforts, the volunteers hold a parade through the commercial display area and camp-ground. Friday morning was the day this year. If you were on the show grounds, you no doubt doubt heard the parade, even if you didn’t see it.

Leading the way, as always, were motorcycle police with lights and sirens blaring. If you weren’t awake before the parade went by, you were after.

Each year, the Grand Marshal is selected from the many groups of volun-teers. This year, the Grand Marshal is the British Air Cadets. From County of Kent, England, 20 cadets crossed the pond to provide invaluable service to Sun ’n Fun, and to have a good time.

If you had, or are having, a good time at the show, thank a volunteer.

Dominican Republic rolls out red carpet for U.S. pilots

The Dominican Republic (DR) is rolling out the red carpet for U.S. private pilots who want to explore the Caribbean island, which is located 650 miles south of Miami.

“With 13 airports that do not charge any fees, it’s easy for private pilots from America to come and explore Dominican scenery and culture, including

our spectacular beaches, mountains, waterfalls, and exciting music and dance,” says Magaly Toribio, vice minister of international promotion for the DR Ministry of Tourism. “We want the DR to be the destination of choice for U.S. pilots.”

“It’s safe to fly to the DR,” adds Fernandez Zucco, DR’s minister of airport authority. “Within the 620 miles distance between Florida and DR, you’ll find 56 airfields under FAA regulations, with the path closely patrolled by the U.S. Coast Guard. The longest leg over the sea is about 120 miles.”

All government user fees for general aviation have been eliminated by Presidential Decree for all private aircraft that weigh less than 30,000 lbs. or have a maximum capacity of 12 passengers, he adds.

In order to enter the DR, visitors from the U.S., Canada and Europe don’t need a visa. They just need to pay $10 at the airport for a tourist card.

Find out more at the DR’s exhibit in Hangar A, Spaces 63, 77 and 78. You also can get more informa-tion at GoDominicanRepublic.com.

‘It’s great fun to fly,’ Colorado volunteer saysBy MEG GODLEWSKI

If you learned to fly after 1965, chances are pretty good that you have logged some time in a Cessna 150. The two-place airplane with the 100-hp Continental engine is a staple in many flight schools, but it doesn’t have a reputation as a strong cross-country airplane.

That doesn’t matter to Joel Keister of Boulder, Colo., who flies his 1959 Cessna 150 all the way to Sun ’n Fun each year.

“It’s great fun to fly,” he says.Keister’s airplane sports a faded green

paint job with horizontal stripes and large registration numbers. It doesn’t have a spinner on it, and the pitot tube really is a tube. It may not be beautiful, but it sure evokes memories of carefully wedging

oneself into the airplane for those primary lessons — and I do mean wedge. There isn’t a lot of cabin space in the airplane.

At seat level it measures just 34 inches across.

“It has the bench seat like the Cessna

140,” he points out. “It also has a pull-to-start handle and the flaps are manually actuated by a lever on the floor.”

Keister previously owned a 140, put-ting about 1,000 hours on it before buying his 150.

He says he learned to fly in 1963 out of necessity. “I was divorced and I was driving 350 miles both ways every other week to visit my daughter,” he recalls. “I thought it would be more fun to fly that distance, so I learned to fly.”

The 79-year-old has been volunteer-ing at the show since 2004. This year he is working as an aircraft marshaler for general aviation aircraft.

“It’s fun because you see all the planes coming and going and all the people,” he said, but adds that being assigned to a specific job at Sun ’n Fun doesn’t really limit his duties.

“Today I picked up the ice for the water and lemonade and I drove the cour-tesy car and worked on a gas grill that wouldn’t light,” he laughed, then scurried off to help move yet another aircraft.

When you think of environmen-tally friendly products and services, aviation may not be the first industry that comes to mind. But Sun ’n Fun officials are working to change all that with the return of an exhibit area known as “GreenSpace.”

The new area, dedicated to avia-tion-oriented products and services that are “friendly” to the environment, debuted during last year’s fly-in. The GreenSpace featured Randall Fishman’s ElectraFlyer-C airplane, an electric car, a hybrid car, the Lindbergh Foundation’s “Green Investment Program,” a children’s educational area, the City of Lakeland’s water and

soil conservation displays, a Florida Refuse recycling exhibit, and numer-ous other exhibitors focused on green products, services and lifestyles.

This year’s GreenSpace exhibit will feature much of the same, plus an enhanced presence by the Lindbergh Foundation, showcasing current initia-tives designed to integrate technology with the environment and, at the same time, educate the public about the growing number of green activities that are taking place in the world of aviation.

“Sun ’n Fun is proud to partner with the Lindbergh Foundation, whose mis-sion it is to further Charles and Anne

Morrow Lindbergh’s shared vision of a balance between technological advancement and environmental pres-ervation,” said Sun ’n Fun President John Burton. “We hope to capture this vision in our GreenSpace exhibit and share it with Sun ’n Fun participants and guests throughout the week of this year’s Fly-In & Expo.”

The Lindbergh Foundation is a non-profit organization, based in Anoka, Minnesota, that suppor ts individual innovations that foster the environment for a planet in balance. Its programs include the annual Lindbergh Award, presented to individuals for significant contribu-

tions toward balancing nature and scientific innovation in their work; the Lindbergh Grants program, which provides grants in amounts up to $10,580 (the cost of building “The Spirit of St. Louis” in 1927) for research or education projects that will make important contributions to the technology/environment balance; and a variety of educational events and publications centered on the balance theme.

The Lindbergh Awards will be presented during the fly-in.

The Greenspace is in the Southeast Exhibit Area, near the Main Tram Station.

PilotMall.com is the “Official Aviation Superstore of Sun ’n Fun.”

PilotMall.com has forged a partnership with Sun ’n Fun that includes operating a 4,000-square-foot aviation superstore in the former Gifts of Flight building on the Sun ’n Fun campus during the annual airshow. PilotMall.com also manages the Gifts of Flight Tents and powers Sun ’n Fun’s online store.

PilotMall.com, which has been around for more than 10 years and sells more than 4,000 products, will offer a wide assortment of pilot supplies, educational materials, gifts and toys during the fly-in, according to Neil Glazer, president. “We will have several thousand products available, from education materials — which our company is very big on — to headsets and portable GPS.”

This year, the store also offers an assortment of sundry items to help make your fly-in experience more comfortable, including hats, chairs, batteries and more.

The store will also be offering samples of men’s grooming products from its recently launched sister company, Mens Direct (MensDirect.com), Glazer said.

Of course, the PilotMall.com Aviation Superstore will also carry the full line of official Sun ’n Fun-branded merchandise, including T-shirts and more, as well as USAF Thunderbird-branded merchandise.

Meanwhile, Gifts of Flight locations will be at vari-ous spots around the campus, such as in front of the Sunset Grill, near the Announcers Stand, at the Florida Air Museum gift shop and elsewhere. Those shops will also carry official Sun ’n Fun merchandise.

Back at the PilotMall.com store, there will be a daily raffle at 5 p.m. for a wide assortment of items, including handheld GPS receivers, headsets, sunglasses and more, Glazer reported.

Popular author and speaker Rod Machado will do book signings at the store on Thursday and Friday at 11:30 a.m. each day.

Glazer noted the store also has a courtesy XM Weather Station so pilots can check the weather before heading home. There’s also a flight simulator set up so that customers can test fly the latest simulation software and hardware.

The store will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the fly-in.

The United States Air Force (USAF) Thunderbirds military jet team returns to Sun ’n Fun this year.

The world-recognized military jet team first appeared at Sun ’n Fun in 2008.

“We are del ighted that the Thunderbirds will return to the skies over Lakeland, knowing the memorable impact their appearance made on all our guests in 2008,” said President John Burton.

The Thunderbirds are expected to arrive on opening day, then command the skies with a practice demonstration slated for 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday and another on Friday from 2:40 p.m. to 3:30

p.m. The Thunderbirds’ first performance is slated for 4 p.m. Saturday, followed by a performance at 4 p.m. Sunday (all times are subject to change).

The Thunderbirds (officially named the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron) per form precision aerial maneuvers. The Thunderbirds squad-ron is an Air Combat Command unit composed of eight pilots (including six demonstration pilots), four support offi-cers, three civilians and more than 130 enlisted personnel.

The air demonstration is a combina-tion of formation flying and solo routines. The four-aircraft “Diamond Formation” demonstrates the training and precision

of Air Force pilots, while the solo aircraft highlights the maximum capabilities of the F-16 “Fighting Falcon,” the fighter jet employed by the Thunderbird team. The Thunderbirds perform approximately 30

maneuvers during their performances, which last about an hour and 15 minutes.

Popular Parts Exchange moved next to Hangar Echo

Visitors to this year’s fly-in will notice some changes to the Sun ’n Fun campus, including a new exhibit hangar and the relocation of the popular Parts Exchange.

Hangar E (Echo) is located near the existing indoor exhibit hangars, just a short distance from the Gulf Coast Avionics/Garmin Hangar D (Delta) near the entrance to the campgrounds. The Parts Exchange, formerly located in Paradise City (the ultralight area), is now adjacent to the new hangar.

“Sun ’n Fun is pleased to offer additional exhibit

space that will help accommodate those businesses who were previously unable to participate due to space limitations,” said President John Burton.

Burton added that moving the popular Par ts Exchange operation next door to Hangar Echo “will stimulate a great deal of additional pedestrian traffic throughout the area.”

“Parts Exchange is a major destination for home-builders and certified aircraft owners alike,” Burton explained. “Thousands of items are consigned by their owners to sell in the Parts Exchange each year. From avionics, props and instruments old and new, to partially completed aircraft fuselages, wings and a host of other pieces, parts and components, chances are good that you will be able to find whatever it is you’re

looking for in Sun ’n Fun’s Parts Exchange.”Visitors will see that most of Hangar Echo’s exhibit

spaces have been spoken for, according to Sun ’n Fun officials, who pointed out that an exhibit area outside Hangar Echo has been claimed by the new American Air Campers Association. Starbucks also has set up a location at the hangar for those needing a coffee fix.

Hangar Echo is located in the fly-in’s former main-tenance facility. During the fly-in, Sun ’n Fun officials will unveil the new 17,500-square-foot maintenance facility. The new building, located in the heart of Sun ’n Fun’s expanding campus, includes a wood shop, fleet maintenance area, tool crib, sign shop, storage and offices for maintenance staff and the Volunteer Coordinator.

Jeff Skiles, first officer on US Airways Flight 1549 that safely landed in the Hudson River last January, will be a featured participant at a variety of events during this year’s fly-in.

Skiles, 50, was at the controls with Captain Chesley Sullenberger when their Airbus A320 experienced multiple bird strikes and lost power to both engines shortly after taking off from New York City’s LaGuardia Airport on Jan. 15, 2009. Unable to restart either engine, Sullenberger safely landed the airplane on the chilly waters of the Hudson River just west of midtown Manhattan. Of the 150 passengers and five crew members on board, only a few received minor injuries.

“Whether you are an aviation enthusiast or not, US Airways Flight 1549 struck a chord with people across the country and around the world with its inspiring story about passengers and crew suc-cessfully overcoming almost insurmountable odds,” said Sun ’n Fun President John Burton. “Many have seen the dramatic video footage and read about the crew’s efforts to safely land a disabled passenger jet in one of the world’s most congested airspaces. But few have had a chance to hear Jeff’s first-person

account of what happened, from uneventful takeoff to the remarkably safe and successful water land-ing.”

“Flight 1549 is a story about people,” Skiles said, “people overcoming adversity, people triumphant over hardship and, I’m warning you, my story might not be what you are expecting.”

Skiles will relay this story during a number of scheduled activities throughout the week, high-lighted by an Evening Program at the Florida Air Museum’s outdoor Pavilion on Wednesday, April 14, beginning at 8 p.m.; a “Museum Mingle” for members of the Florida Air Museum on Thursday, April 15, at 7 p.m.; a museum lecture on Friday, April 16, at 2 p.m.; and a host of other activities during the week.

Skiles started flying at the age of 16 and has logged more than 20,000 hours as a pilot. His early flying time was spent with his father over the Alcan Highway to Alaska. He went on to become a CFI, flew cargo aircraft and later worked for a commuter airline. He has spent the past 24 years as a first officer and captain for US Airways. He also owns a WACO biplane.

‘Miracle on the Hudson’ lands in Lakeland

FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt is slated to appear at several venues this week, including the always-interesting “Meet the FAA” session on Friday, April 16, at 1 p.m. in the FAA Production Studios in the FAA Building in the middle of the grounds.

“There are several issues we hope to

discuss with the administrator and his key staff members during the course of his stay,” said Sun ’n Fun President John Burton. “We also hope he will be able to spend some of his time along the flightline meeting with pilots and enjoying a healthy dose of Sun ’n Fun’s

southern-style hospitality.”Babbitt was sworn in as the FAA’s 16th

administrator June 1, 2009. He began his aviation career as a pilot, flying 25 years for Eastern Airlines. He also served as president and CEO for the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA).

You’ve just spent a wonderful day at Sun ’n Fun and are ready to fly home. But during your preflight inspection you notice the nose strut of your Cessna 182 is completely flat. All is not lost — one quick call to the Aircraft Emergency Repair Team can get you on your way.

This year the team is made of up 15 to 20 volunteers, according to Charlie

Bukoski who, with his wife Judy, heads the team.

“We don’t do big repairs, but we can help with little ones, like replac-ing fluids or charging a battery,” he said. “The busiest time for us is right after the airshow ends because that is when people realize that they’ve left the master switch on and the battery is dead.”

Each year, tools are donated by Snap-On and signed out as needed from the emergency repair kiosk, which is at the approach end of Runway 5. Most of the volunteers are A&P mechanics so they can tell you which tool you need to borrow to take care of the problem.

“We try to stay away from doing the repairs ourselves, but if the aircraft owner asks, sometimes we will assist,”

he said. “We normally assist 70 to 85 people during the event. The bulk of those issues are problems with dead batteries, brakes, and flat tires.”

Hours are from 8 a.m. to an hour or so after the airshow.

If a plane has serious issues, the volunteers can have it towed to one of the FBOs at the airport for more extensive repairs.

If you need help finding accommo-dations or want a recommendation on where to eat while you’re at Sun ’n Fun, you can find the answers at the center, which is just outside the Sunset Grill.

Operated by the Polk County Visitors and Convention Bureau — also known as the Central Florida Visitors and Convention Bureau — the informa-tion center will be staffed throughout the show with specialists who can answer anything from where’s the best place to shop to where campers can wash their clothes.

The center also will have Florida airport directories and aeronautical charts available (while supplies last), as well as Florida road maps and guides.

It also will be the site of the Internet cafe. There will be four computers available at no charge.

Looking for a way to stay on top of what is happening at Sun ’n Fun during the show? Tune in to Sun ’n Fun Radio on 1510 AM.

The radio station will have more than 30 volunteers covering every aspect of the fly-in, according to Radio Chairman Dave Shallbetter.

“We’ll have updates on news and happenings around the fly-in, great inter views with aviation notables, schedules of events, interviews with sponsors, vendors and guests, live coverage of the daily airshow, and remote broadcasts of the evening programs and select aviation safety seminars from the FAA Production Studios.”

Women in Aviation will return this year with its special segment, “Women Shine at Sun ’n Fun.”

Also returning this year are Jeb Burnside, Dave Higdon and

Jack Hodgson, the voices of The Uncontrolled Airspace Podcast. They will do two podcasts from the show, one on Tuesday evening and the other on Sunday morning.

Other podcasters are returning this year, Shallbetter said, including The Finer Points of Flying with Jason Miller on Wednesday, the station’s first virtual podcast, Airspeed Online with host Steve Force, appearing via the Internet, on Thursday, while the second annual ‘Gathering of Aviation Podcasters’ is slated for Friday. The Pilot’s Flight Podlog with Will Hawking and David Allen is Saturday.

The radio station is expanding its Internet presence as well, with updates on its Twitter account, SnFRadio.

“The best news is, thanks to a part-nership with LiveATC.net, we will be audio streaming Sun ’n Fun Radio,” Shallbetter said.

Tune in to Sun ’n Fun Radio Workshops slatedSun ’n Fun Workshops can help

you learn all the skills necessary to build your own plane or work on any other project.

If you’re a hands-on person or are considering building an aircraft, you’ll want to take part in these sessions as experienced instructors guide you through the techniques for each skill and answer your questions about spe-cific projects.

Many of the workshops have been approved by the FAA for credit towards the annual require-ments for IA renewal and the A&P Awards Program. To get credit for attending, pick up a time sheet at the information booth and have the workshop instructor sign it.

Operating times are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Some workshops operate continuously, while others have scheduled programs.

Check at the workshop information booth for times and workshop locations.

W o r k s h o p s i n c l u d e : Woodwork; Avionics/Electrical; Basic Sheet Metal; Cable Swaging; Composites; Computer Resources; Engines; Fabric Covering; Kit Aircraft Building; Metal Shaping; Propeller Carving; Sport Planes; and Welding, both electric and gas.

The free workshops are located in the Central Florida Aerospace Academy and in tents around the Buehler Restoration Center.

Youth ActivitiesThe Tom Davis Education Center

offers fun, educational opportunities for young aviation enthusiasts.

The Youth Activities tent located outside the Davis Center is filled with a variety of activities, where kids can make kites, parachutes, windsocks, and ribs, as well as learn the art of paper airplane making and learn about weather from experts. Coloring booklets will be available for the younger children, while the

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) will have a variety of animals on hand.

New this year are three programs from the FAA especially for middle school and high school students — but younger children can participate, officials said. The programs include “Smart Skies,” which is an air traffic control computer program; weight and balance training; and learning how to pre-flight aircraft. The FAA will have two airplanes at the center for its programs.

Also available will be Kid Air II, a flight simulator.

On the center’s back porch, a hot dog lunch will be served for $3 for those who pre-register.

Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Volunteers prefer par-ents stay with young children, while older kids — middle school aged and up — can participate in the center’s activities on their own.

The Tom Davis Education Center is located near the Florida Air Museum, just past the Pavilion.

Sun ’n Fun’s chief judge shares the tricks of the trade

How do you judge airplanes in six very different categories for a variety of very different awards?

“Objectively,” says Leonard Kress, chief judge at Sun ’n Fun.

“It’s easy to be subjective, though,” he adds. “That’s why we follow EAA judging standards.”

Those standards are outlined in a “scoring decision tree” that leads to scores ranging from zero (major deficiency) to 10 (perfect, impossible to do better).

“Deficiency is defined as a safety item with potential for catastrophic flight fail-ure,” Kress explained, pointing out that very few owners with airplanes in such bad shape ask to be judged.

At the other end of the scale, a 10

is utterly flawless, a very difficult level to achieve — but far from impossible. Most owners who ask to be judged have airplanes that are well above average, generally scoring in the seven (strong show quality) to 10 range.

As the judges make their rounds, there is no discussion. “Points aren’t awarded by consensus,” Kress said, but by each judge — up to 50 of them — filling out individual score sheets. The scores are added up and compared only after judg-ing is completed.

Airplanes are judged in six categories: custom-built, vintage, warbirds, ultralight and light sport, rotorcraft and seaplanes.

The first question asked is whether the airplane being looked at is airworthy. If not, it earns a zero and there’s nothing more to be done. Assuming it is, however, the next question is whether it’s better than average. A no leads to choosing whether it is very crude, crude, functional or average. Each of those terms goes with a successively higher score, from

one to four. An airplane judged to be better than

average is considered on yet another set of questions. Is it equal to, or better than, factory new? If not, but of above average craftsmanship, it falls into the five, six or seven scoring level: slightly above aver-age, solidly above, or showing pride of workmanship.

If, however, a judge gives a yes answer to the “factory new” question, the next step is the really hard one, Kress said.

A choice must be made as to whether the airplane has very fine workmanship but apparent flaws, outstanding workman-ship with flaws that are difficult to detect, or is — and this is a 10 — “flawless in all respects.”

Sometimes owners will ask judges to critique their airplanes.

“That’s a real can of worms,” Kress stated. “After all, no mother ever had an ugly baby. People put their lives into these things” and no judge wants to face a restored airplane’s “mother” with a list

of flaws. Take a stroll among the airplanes this

week and do your own judging. When the results are printed in the April 18 edition of Sun ’n Fun Today, you can compare your conclusions with those of the judges.

Judging airplanes

If you have any interest in aircraft whose wings go ‘round and ‘round, find your way out to Choppertown — and it is way out — at the east end of the Sun ’n Fun grounds.

If the rotorcraft experience is one you’ve never had, go out there anyway and see how personal the term “personal aircraft” can be. Watch things with rotary wings take off and land, some of them carrying

just the pilot, others with enough seats for one or more passengers.

Just for fun, test yourself on the hovering demon-strator. The thing looks simple, but if you can keep the ball in the middle of the circle — a test of your potential hovering ability — you’ll be doing better than most who try it. To the embarrassment of adults, children seem to do it best and almost instinctively.

All in all, there’s a lot to see and do at Choppertown. It’s well worth the trek or ride out there, especially this year as Choppertown celebrates its 20th anni-versary.

The red and yellow trams run out to Choppertown. You can pick up the trams at the Shuttle Depot near the main entrance or at stops near the vintage aircraft area and the seabird area.

The Splash-In returns to nearby Lake Agnes in Polk City, adjacent to Fantasy of Flight.

“Fly-In volunteers headed by Splash-In Chairman Bob Highley and members of the Sun ’n Fun staff have been working with Kermit Weeks and his team at Fantasy of Flight for the past several months to make this the safest and most positive experience possible,” said Sun ’n Fun President John Burton. “The Lake Agnes location also offers an opportunity for Splash-In partici-pants and their guests to enjoy Fantasy of Flight’s incredible facilities and activities.”

The Splash-In takes place Thursday, April 15, and is designed especially for

amphibians and seaplanes. The fly-by begins at 11 a.m., with competitions begin-ning after the fly-by.

Shuttles will run daily between the Sun ’n Fun campus and Lake Agnes. Cost is $3 each way.

It takes more than associations speaking up to teach opinion leaders and decision makers about GA. It takes individuals — pilots, mechanics, FBO operators, aviation enthusiasts — step-ping up and becoming actively engaged with their community leaders.

“As I see it, some of the top issues for the coming year must include protecting our nation’s airports, ensuring that air traffic modernization accounts for the needs of all system users, improving general aviation’s image, and building the pilot population,” said AOPA President and CEO Craig Fuller. “In order to make real progress on these issues, I am asking every one of AOPA’s more than 415,000 members — indeed, all of America’s

pilots — to get personally engaged in protecting and promoting general avia-tion.”

Throughout this year, AOPA will be asking its members to get engaged in support of general aviation.

There are literally hundreds of ways to do that. Being more engaged can be as simple as staying informed about the issues that af fect your flying and as involved as hosting a major public event. But in between are almost infinite opportunities.

Go flying and take a non-pilot friend or colleague with you. Write a letter to the editor responding to a general aviation story, whether it’s good or bad. Write to your elected officials. Ask them

where they stand on general aviation issues. Make a financial contribution to a general aviation cause such as GA Serves America, the AOPA Political Action Committee, or the AOPA Foundation. Join a local pilot group or start one if your airport doesn’t already have one.

AOPA is prepared to back up its members as they become more active and engaged, providing tools like a new engagement section of AOPA Online (AOPA.org/Engage), including tips and suggestions on how to get more deeply involved in the future of general avia-tion.

At the same time, AOPA will continue — and even increase — its advocacy for general aviation across a broad front, from addressing a diminishing pilot popu-lation to protecting America’s airports to supporting those who support general aviation in Congress.

AOPA will also be engaged in a number of other issues, such as air traf fic control modernization (known as NextGen), continuing to improve general aviation air safety, and aviation security issues as they affect general aviation pilots and owners. And AOPA will continue to monitor the FAA funding and authorization. While neither authori-zation bill passed by the House and the Senate contain user fees, Fuller noted, “Bad ideas have a funny way of coming back around in Washington, so I have to believe that sooner or later, this idea will surface again. In the meantime, the worst thing we can do is sit back, congratulate ourselves, and imagine that all our wor-ries are behind us.

“Taking action and making a commit-ment to become more engaged is vital,” concluded Fuller. “Even with our success, I must tell you that we can no longer take for granted that the freedom to fly will be sustained unless we work to defend that freedom we cherish.”

Get engaged: A marriage of passion and commitment

Getting aroundThe Sun ’n Fun grounds are vast,

which means getting around can be tough for some visitors.

You may use your own scooter or wheelchair on the grounds, as long as it meets certain requirements. Scooters must be single seat, battery-powered, with two, three or four wheels, designed for use by a mobility-impaired person. Wheelchairs can be manual or battery-powered.

Those using scooters or wheelchairs do not need special credentials or passes to bring their devices onto the Sun ’n Fun grounds.

People using scooters and wheel-chairs are allowed to go wherever the general public is allowed, which includes the flightline. Sun ’n Fun officials pride themselves on the fact that the grounds are very accessible, but they also realize

they cover a vast area, which is why the Blue Route on the transportation trams will take a person using a wheelchair or scooter along with their family and friends.

If you didn’t bring your own or realize once you get here that you should have brought it, you can rent scooters and manual wheelchairs on a daily basis. The rental space is near the Admissions/Registration building in the Main Gate Plaza. Scooters are $60 for the day, while wheelchairs are $20.

The Handicap Hospitality ticket windows are located on the west side of the Admissions/Registration building at the Main Gate Plaza.

Besides selling admissions tickets, the Handicap Hospitality team will be happy to help with information and questions you have regarding all acces-sibility services available during the fly-in.

Just your typeLooking for others who own the

same aircraft as you? Head to the Type Club Tent, which is next to the Florida Sport Aviation Antique Classic Association building near the Vintage Aircraft Camping Area.

Inside the Type Club Tent you will find displays paying homage to various types of aircraft, ranging from Piper Cubs to Mooneys.

“We have 14 type clubs that will be represented this year,” says Sharon Trembly, chairman of the Type Club Tent. “The clubs have tables and their members volunteer a few hours at a

time to answer questions and the like. It is a good place for networking and meeting new people. People come from all over the country.”

The Type Club Tent is par t social get together, part information exchange. If you have a particular challenge with your aircraft, mention it to someone in the tent. Chances are they can point you in the right direction.

Each year Trembly — who is a member of the Cessna 170 Type Club — posts signs outside the tent indicating which type clubs are in attendance.

Nine kids and five teachers from Nannestad High School, in Nannestad, Norway, visited Sun ’n Fun this week. The students, who are enrolled in the school’s technology program, also visited Disney World, Fantasy of Flight and NASA. The school, located about 50 miles from Oslo, is across the street from an airport and so aerodynamics is focus of student efforts, according to teachers. Pictured are (left to right, front to back): Diako Aliassio, Gianluca Rossattu, Pernille Landro, Heidi Frostrud, Anders Dyvesreen, Age Flatnet, Lars-K. Iverson, Mathias Aamadt, Kjell Arnt Nystol, Tomas David Chadwell, Thomas Tangen, Eivind Adreas Stenhammer, and Rolf Skaara. The students and teachers were among the almost 1,000 international guests from 50 countries that had registered at the International Tent as of mid-week.

indoor exhibit hangar as a result of vendor demand. While the building is filled, with Starbuck’s taking the south end, recognition was an issue the first few days, Sun ’n Fun officials note. A few signs, promoting the new building, have gone up since opening day, but people are still “discovering” the building.

Vendors in Hangar Echo include: BeLite Electronics with its new feath-er weight, solid-state instruments;

ZX-1-America with a new, to the United States, engine treatment; Comlinkpro debuted its Angel, which is a personal flight assistant; Red Canoe’s high-end aviation-themed clothing; and a flight/aircraft monitoring product from FlightFrame. There are several more exhibitors in Hangar Echo.

If you’ve been through buildings A-D and the other outdoor commercial exhibi-tors, you owe it to yourself to take a walk through the woods to see ALL Sun ’n Fun has to offer.

Planning begins for Destination Aviation Summer CampsBy JANICE WOOD

When Sun ’n Fun ends tomorrow, that doesn’t mean the show grounds will be quiet until next year.

Already, Sun ’n Fun officials are gearing up for the annual summer camps, which kick off June 28.

The Destination Aviation Summer Camps are held over six dif ferent weeks in the summer. The one-week camps are designed to “educate and entertain,” according to Joyce Sanborn, education coordinator for Sun ’n Fun.

Both residential and day camps are offered, with specialized indoor and outdoor aviation activities. Each camp can accept 20 kids, she noted.

Each day of camp of fers a dif-ferent activity, such as learning the dif ferent par ts of an airplane, an orienteering program, where camp-ers build their own compasses, and a day of flight planning. On Thursday, campers can participate in a flight program sponsored by FlightSafety International. “This is an opportunity to fly a general aviation aircraft with an instructor pilot on a short cross-country flight between airports,” she said.

Campers come from all over. “We have one registered from Nunanut, Canada, which is on the other side of the Arctic Circle,” Sanborn noted.

Sanborn notes that residential campers are supervised 24 hours a day. Volunteers run the camps, including many who were campers at one time, she added.

You can find out more at the Florida Air Museum or by calling 863-904-4073.

Want your plane to shine, but no water?

Check out QuicShine99, which can be applied to the finish of a dirty airplane without scratching the surface.

When sprayed on a dirty sur-face, the QuicShine99 formulation emulsifies and lifts the dirt without scratching, company officials said, noting the waterless formula is as easy to use as spraying it on and wiping it off.

See it for yourself in Hangar E, Space 31.

Airshow performer aims to inspire kids to great heights

As airshow season kicks off this week at Sun ’n Fun, aerobatic star Greg Poe has undertaken a special mission: Reach 10,000 children to inspire them to great heights.

At each stop during airshow season, including here in Lakeland for Sun ’n Fun, Poe visits schools to present his “Elevate Your Life” program. At each school winners of essay contests win rides in Poe’s airshow plane.

“We have a goal to reach out and pres-ent to over 10,000 kids this year during the 2010 airshow season,” said Poe. “Our program is designed to help kids reach their dreams and see the potential in themselves, and hopefully that awakened drive and passion helps keep them away from drugs and other bad influences that can wreck their futures.”

Poe is a world-renowned aerobatic per former and unlimited aerobatic champion who is slated to perform in the airshow both Saturday and Sunday. He started with humble beginnings in Boise, Idaho, and discovered his passion for flying at an early age. Poe relentlessly pursued his dream and now is living his dream, promoting green energy in his Ethanol-powered Fagen MX2 show plane. He has been featured on Modern Marvels, Ripley’s Believe It or Not,

the Discovery Channel, The History Channel, CNN, and many others. He is an enthusiastic emissary for renewable fuels, and tirelessly promotes the benefits of Green Energy at every airshow.

Poe’s Elevate Your Life program, the

action arm of the Ryan J. Poe Foundation, is a youth outreach program designed to share his story of hard work and accomplishment with middle-school-aged children all over North America. The program came about as a result of

losing his son Ryan to heroin addiction in August 2002.

Four states, one destinationOne of the best parts of Sun ’n Fun is meeting up with friends.

The Sunday Morning Breakfast Group from the midwest meet in front of the FAA building every day at 1p.m.

“And then we go on our separate ways,” said Carol McCabe from Chicago.

“We come from a four-state area and once a year we make the long trip to Sun ’n Fun,” explained pilot Steve McCabe.

“The most challenging part of the journey is getting every-one together to pose for the photos,” Carol said, adding, “it’s like herding cats.” Ph
