THE DIFFUSION OF SMALL-POX. - The four- ’’’
weekly period ended on July llth showed a considerable rise Iin the number of notifications of small-pox in London as compared with the period of the same duration immediatelypreceding it-namely, that for the four weeks endedJune 13th. In the earlier period just named there were but17 notified cases of the disease in the county of London, whereas in the period ended July llth there were no fewerthan 62. The localised outbreak in Islington, of course, did much to swell the total, amounting as it did for24 cases, but this did not account for the whole increase. We tnd as many as 8 notifications in Camberwell, 6 in Lime-houe, and 5 in Lambeth. In all, 13 sanitary areas wereinvaded by small-pox. Oddly enough the correspondingperiod of last year also showed large increase over thatprecediog it and was followed by an epidemic whichlasted for three months. In the two weeks which fol-lowed, ending on July 25th there were respectively nocases and m cases admitted to hospital in London, butno death from the disease has been registered. On
Saturday, July 25th, there remained under treatment37 patients suffering under the malady. There were no
regi, tered deaths from small-pox in any of the thirty-threegreat towns of the Registrar-General in the week. Thesuburban districts of the metropolis have now for some timebeen almost free from small-pox, but further afield we hearof cases springing up in Sussex, the Hangleton Hospitalhaling received recently many small-pox patients, mostly,it is stated, from Portslade, in the Steyning district.Steyning Union, it is true, has no large amount of defaultunder the Vaccination Acts to complain of, but there areneighbouring unions in the county where many childrenare growing up in an unprotected state. It is sincerelyto be hoped that the malady will not spread to any of theSouth Coast health resorts in a manner to damage their"seasons." At Coventry the sanitary committee have hadbefore them the state of the city in the matter of small-poxand have been informed that the outbreak of the diseasethere is of a very mild nature, and that all precautions havebeen adopted for checking its spread. The town clerk wasinstructed to communicate with the Local GovernmentBeard setting forth the urgency of at once sanctioningthe plans for the proposed small-pox hospital. SummonsesiiaB’e been granted against two parents in the cityin respect of unvaccinated children. The Gloucester- anitary committee have, it appears, discontinued the issueof weekly statements as to small-pox occurrences, the healthof the city being deemed to approximate now to its normalsedition. It would seem that the expenses connected with’he recent epidemic, so far as the guardians are con-
cerned, have been .E2056, and that it has been de-cided to ask the Local Government Board to sanctionthe raising of a loan to meet the case. It will beinteresting to know what is the sum total to whichthe citizens will nave to subscribe in respect of the epidemicis all its bearings. The expenses appearing on the books ofthe town council will, however, we imagine, go but a very.;’t!e way towards the whole, as the amount of money whichmust of necessity have been expended in one way andanother by the public in matters of a personal characterb’ having direct relation with the prevalence of small-
pox in the town must have been excessive ; and we knowthat charitable contributions were made with a liberalhand.
