Unroll the roofing mem-brane Rhenofol CV/CG.

The edge markings makeadjusting the followingmembrane with a seamoverlap of 50 mm easier(in case of mechanicallyfastened Rhenofol CVwith edge overlap, theseam overlap should be100 mm).

Cross joints must be staggered and also overlap by 50 mm.

During work breaks, theapplied roof layers mustbe secured against winduplift.

... with the handheld welderand hand roller or with thewelding machine.

With the continuouslyadjustable, handheld, hot-airwelder with a 40 mm nozzle(industrial hot-air welder)the seam areas are evenlyheated and immediatelyclosed with the silicon handroller. To produce a secureweld, the following pointsshould be observed:

The seam areas must beclean and dry.

Heat up the welder forapprox. 4 min.

Select the correct weldingtemperature and speed, which should be checkedby performing test weldsbefore starting to work.In peeling tests, at wel-ding level, the cooled-down weld seam mustnot peel. Either the mem-

brane material must tearor the lamination jointmust unravel.

The welder must be heldunder the seam so thatthe edge of the nozzleprojects approx. 3 mmfrom the edge of theseam.

The seam must be for-med with a weldingwidth of min. 30 mm. To keep the roofingmembranes in place, themembrane seams shouldbe tacked with slightpressure (not welded!) atthe back of the overlap.

T-joints should be securedby slightly melting andchamfering the centremembrane edge, thuspreventing capillaryaction.

In case of ash build-up,the metal nozzle shouldbe cleaned with a wirebrush or with scissors.

If Rhenofol roofing mem-branes are to be flashedagainst built-in rigid PVCdetails, the reliability ofsuch connections must beagreed with the manu-facturer of the built-indetails!

The hot-air weldingmachines, which are manually operated, are mainly used for sealingmembrane seams of largerroof areas.

As for reliable sealing of the seams, the samerequirements as for manualwelding apply, tacking is notnecessary. A consistent levelof power is essential. For most standard automaticwelding machines a genera-tor with output of 10 kvamust be used.

11

Sealing the seams by hot-air welding

Page 12: Application manual Rhenofol · certificates. Resistant to standard exhaust gas from indus-trial and heating plants. Outstanding resistance to natural ageing. Rhenofol CG is root-resistant

Additional requirements:

When starting the machine, a function testmust be carried out!

Permanently monitorthe welding process! Do not inhale fumesthat are emitted duringwelding!

In case of uneven substrates, the machinemust be guided on rigidcompensation strips (e.g. aluminium sheets),which are alternately placed along the seam. Thus perpendicular bulgesare avoided and a smoothweld without beads isensured.

If flashings are carried outby hot-air welding to Rhenofol roofing mem-branes or coated metalsheets and during repairs of old Rhenofol roofs, thewelding areas must becleaned prior to further processing.

Clean them with a cloththat has been moistenedwith Rhenofol solvent-welding agent. Allow thesolvent-welding agent toevaporate (at least 1/2 hr)before hot-air welding.

Check all seam edges.

... with the welding brush,Rhenofol solvent-weldingagent (THF) and a sandbag.

With the Rhenofol solvent-welding agent, you can produce homogenous connections betweenRhenofol roofing mem-branes, with Rhenofol coated metal sheets andbuilt-in rigid PVC details.

Solvent-welding agent issimultaneously applied toboth sides at an area of300-400 mm of the seamarea, using a non-glued flatbrush, and the areas thenpressed on by hand. Afterthis, pressure is immediatelyapplied to the seam bymeans of a PE sandbag.

13

Sealing the seams by solvent welding

Page 14: Application manual Rhenofol · certificates. Resistant to standard exhaust gas from indus-trial and heating plants. Outstanding resistance to natural ageing. Rhenofol CG is root-resistant

To produce a secure weld, the following points shouldbe observed:

The seam areas must beclean and dry.

At temperatures below 5 °C the seam area mustbe preheated with thehandheld hot-air welder.

Damage to rigid foamboard caused by solvent-welding agent is preven-ted by a larger seamoverlap and correctdosing of the solvent-welding agent.

T-joints can be secured byslightly melting andchamfering the centremembrane edge with thehandheld hot-air welder, thus preventing capillaryaction.

In case of low outsidetemperatures combinedwith high air humidity,hot-air welding is re-commended.

Solvent-welding agentmust not come into con-tact with the skin or theeyes!

Use adequate skin protec-tion lotion before and afterwelding. You must not usesolvent-welding agent toclean your skin!

No smoking, no open fire, avoid sparks!

Use solvent-weldingagent only in properlyventilated areas! Do notinhale fumes!

Avoid excessive appli-cation.

Defective spots shouldonly be repaired with thehot-air welder not byadditional applicationof solvent.

Check all seam edges.

Handling instructions for solvents and flammable fluids are to be observed!

With profiled steel decking or timberboarding, loosely lay Rhenofol CV perpendic-ularly to the corrugationsor the boards.

Mechanical fastening canbe carried out in the formof seam fastening in themembrane edge overlap(seam overlap min. 100 mm), in the form offield fastening throughthe roofing membrane orwith the welding pastesystem underneath theroofing membrane.

In case of seam fasten-ing, the distance betweenthe membrane edge andthe washer must be atleast 10 mm.

The washers must lay flatand press the roof sealingonto the substrate, however, they must notsink into any insulatingmaterial.

The parameters for fastener spacing andmembrane width are predefined by the winduplift calculation (FDT service - please askour Technical depart-ment).

Perimeter fixing of Rhenofol CV

For wind uplift reasonsroofing membranes Rhenofol CV must be fixedby welding to Rhenofol coated metal sheets at allroof perimeters, penetra-tions and valleys, whichdeviate from the horizon-tal by more than 3°.

Fixing is carried out withangles or strips of Rhenofolcoated metal sheet that arefirmly fastened to the sub-

strate and against whichthe roofing membrane Rhenofol CV is flashed atroof level by welding.

The cut width of the coated metal sheets should be at least 80 mm.

If direct fastening in thesubstrate is prevented bythermal insulation layers, the support for the coatedmetal sheet must be ac-cordingly pressure-resistant.

The performance of flatroofs depends to a largedegree on the functionalreliability of flashings and trims.

Special attention has to bepaid to the following points:

Rhenofol roofing mem-branes must always befixed at all roof perime-ters, flashings, roof penetrations and valleys(see page 25 ff.).

Sealings of flashingsand trims must be secured against windintrusion by bonding, clamping or full-sizefastening.

The flashing strips must beproperly fixed. If the flas-hing membrane is bon-ded, then at flashingheights over 200 mm, afull-size adhesive bondingis necessary. Valley areasare left unbonded at awidth of 200 mm to allowmovement compensation.

In case of mechanicalfastening of the flashingmembrane (with Rhenofolcoated metal sheets or byclamping with the mountingrail of the roof edge trim),the spacing between the lin-ear fastenings must notexceed 500 mm (the wholeroll out length is consid-ered). Rhenofol coatedmetal sheets for inter-mediate fixing should be atleast 50 mm wide.

You can leave out separa-tion layers at the flashingarea, if the substrate issmooth and even andedges are specially pro-tected (e. g. with anglesof Rhenofol coated metalsheets or with syntheticfleece 300 g/m2).

In case materials areincompatible, suitableseparation layers areobligatory.

It is especially advantageousto use upstands that arecompatible with flashing with PVC roofing mem-branes, by the rooflight manufacturer, e. g.

upstands with a completecovering of roofingmembranes Rhenofol andcovered top flashing edge.

Rigid PVC upstands, orwith laminate-embeddedrigid PVC strips againstwhich the roofing mem-branes Rhenofol are flashed at roof level bywelding.

For hot-air welding, cleanwith Rhenofol solvent-welding agent beforewelding.

In case of flashing Rhenofolroofing membranes , theupstand must be approvedfor fixings by the rooflightmanufacturer, otherwiseseparate fixing of the mem-branes with Rhenofol coatedmetal sheets or single faste-ners is necessary. (see page29 ff.).

Weld the standing seamprofile only when Rhenofol CV roofingmembranes are cleanand dry.

Thoroughly clean dirtysurfaces.

Prior to applying the standing seam profile, carefully check the seams.

We recommend welding thestanding seam profilelengthwise to the roofingmembrane. It is thus possi-ble to use the seam as apositioning aid. Weld theprofile on the seam, butnot directly over theseam edge! Place additional positioning markers as required. Do not place the standingseam profile in the rainwaterrun-off area or near rain-water outlets. For safety reasons, do notinstall standing seam profileson roof areas, which areregularly walked on.

84 As a founding member of theAssociation for PVC RoofingMembrane Recycling (AfDR)we have been providingecological closed recycling ofvaluable materials for manyyears. The cycle starts withthe resource-saving produc-tion and ends with with therecycling of PVC. The follow-ing procedure for returningthe monomeric plasticized old PVC membranes wasestablished within the AfDRrecycling:

Acceptance criteria

The recycling system acceptsonly membranes made ofhomogeneous PVC-P andfabric or scrim reinforcedPVC-P. The old roofingmembranes must be free ofadhered foreign matter, i. e.clean swept, when deliveredfor recycling. To achieve this, the roof cover must bethoroughly swept with abroom to remove any gravelstones or other debris.

The membranes then must be cut into approx. 1 m widestrips and rolled up (approx.15 m rolls).

Roll the membranes up tightly to reduce transportvolume. The membranes arecollected in Big-Bags, i. e.synthetic fabric bags with acapacity of approx. 300 to400 m2 of old roofing membranes and a maximumtotal weight of 1,000 kg.
