Dear Participant,

APIBA is pleased to welcome you to our 2015 Annual Seminar, whose primary aim has always been since its foundation in 1971 to provide English teachers with a permanent forum where issues can be discussed. This traditional event held year after year has contributed to keeping teachers up-to-date by offering them the opportunity to discuss with specialists and colleagues the latest research and experiences in the teaching of English as a foreign language.

We hope this new issue of our traditional annual event comes up to your expectations and helps you get updated on the latest trends and therefore grow as ELT professionals.

Best wishes,

Virginia López GrisolíaPresident

Claudia Ferradas, PhDOurselves - in EnglishOne of the central concerns of foreign language learning is how to communicate our hybrid, fluid identities in a language used to express worldviews different from our own.

In a context of growing international contact, virtual as well as face to face, intercultural competence has become paramount. This competence involves not only the capacity to understand the values and customs of others but also to be able to express our own meanings so that others can understand them. How can we find the words to express concepts, habits and perceptions which do not seem to have an equivalent in another culture? How can we find points in common that make communication possible? And how effective is English as the language of international communication to express local meanings?

This session explores literary (though not necessarily printed) texts in English in which intercultural encounters are highlighted and proposes activities and resources for the classroom which aim at crossing intercultural borders. The encounter with otherness can encourage reflection on how meanings can be communicated across cultures. Considering such products critically and comparatively and then finding ways to respond to them can contribute to developing the linguistic repertoire necessary to express our own meanings in English.

Challenges at today’s state-run schools: How the NES can help

In this workshop we will be working on real episodes from everyday life in the classrooms of state high schools (classroom conflict, little or no development of the productive skills, difficulty with assessment, etc.)

Together, we will resort to the proposals in the NES to find alternative perspectives and procedures that can result in a need-satisfying classroom environment that can help us achieve our educational goals.

DO, RE, MI... The Sound of Music in Our Classrooms

Music can be highly memorable and motivating and it can open pathways to the learning of a second language. As well as being an important part of students’ lives, it can improve cognition and creativity.

In this hands-on workshop, we would like to share with the audience a set of music-related tasks that have proved effective in classroom practice in fostering language acquisition through the blend of challenge, fun and the resulting enjoyment.

SIGS’ CORNER

20 | APIBA ANNUAL SEMINAR 2015: TEACHING AND BEYOND

APIBA SIGs enable teachers with similar interests to share ideas, network and grow professionally through regular meetings, newsletters and conference events. A SIG is neither a course nor a seminar nor a lecture – a SIG is a study group in which all members

participate and exchange ideas and opinions; a SIG is a discussion forum in which teachers of English can develop as professionals. SIG activities are open and democratic and small projects are also welcome.

This year the APIBA SIGs are celebrating their 15th anniversary. Throughout all these years this forum for exchange among colleagues has undergone changes and mergers as well as given birth to new groups. Such is the spirit of the SIGs: flexibility and diversity.

We are very proud to show what they are currently doing and their future projects.

Poetry to walk in someone else’s shoes

American Poet Laureate Billy Collins argues that when we read a poem we enter the consciousness of another, we loosen some of our fixed notions in order to accommodate to a culturally diverse lived experience. This is why poetry is often used in class to develop empathy and compassion, apart from the more strictly language and literary oriented uses it can lend itself to.

The five or six poems to be discussed today have been among my secondary school students’ favourite ones for many years. They are meant as examples of how, though short and lexically simple, poems can be the trigger for deep introspection, heated discussions and striking creative writing and reading practices regarding the task of living in a complex but fascinating world.
