Boston Whaler founderRichard T. Fisher demon-strating one of the fea-tures that has made Bos-ton Whaler the “Unsink-able Legend” in this 1961LIFE Magazine Photo.

Richard T. Fisher wasposthumously inductedinto the National MarineManufacturer’s Associa-tion (NMMA) Hall of Fameon September 26, 1996for accomplishmentsmade in marine engineer-ing and construction.

History

In 1958, company founder Richard T. Fisher introduced the first Boston Whaler boat in Braintree, Massachussetts. Itfeatured two significant innovations: first, its twin sponson hull design produced superior stability and a remarkably dryride; second, its unique foam core construction made the boat not only durable, but unsinkable as well. Fisher took everyopportunity to illustrate the unique characteristics of the Boston Whaler. His most famous demonstration was captured in1961, by Life Magazine. The series of photographs showed the boat underway, the boat being sawed in half and ulti-mately Fisher motoring away in the remaining half of the boat. And through the years many other demonstrations haveproved the toughness and durability of the Boston Whaler hull. And though you may never cut your boat in half, this onlygoes to show one thing, people whose livelihood and lives depend on boats consistently choose Boston Whaler becauseof their seaworthiness, dependablility and the inherent safety of a hull that won’t sink even if severely damaged. BostonWhalers are built to last. For over 40 years Boston Whaler® has strived to make each model better, providing you witha safe and fun boating experience. That is the reason we offer a 10 year limited transferable warranty. It is also anexcellent reason why you can trust the safety of your family and friends to a Boston Whaler.

PLEASE KEEP THIS BOOK AND OTHER MATERIALS IN A SECURE PLACE, AND BE SURE TO HAND ITOVER TO THE NEW OWNER IF YOU SELL THE BOAT.

This Owner’s Manual has been written to provide specific information about your boat and it should be read carefully.Keep this booklet in the Owner’s Manual Packet. The Owner’s Manual Packet has been compiled to help you operateyour boat with safety and pleasure. It contains details of the boat, the equipment supplied or fitted, it’s systems andinformation on it’s operation and maintenance. Please familiarize yourself with the boat and it’s operation beforeusing it. If this is your first boat, or you are changing to a type of boat you are not familiar with, for your own comfortand safety, please ensure that you obtain handling and operating experience before “assuming command” of yourboat. Your Boston Whaler® dealer or local Yacht Club will be pleased to advise you of marine safety classes and safeboating classes in your area.

1. Limited Structural Hull Warranty - 0-5 Years: Boston Whaler will provide 100% reimbursement for any repair orreplacement as a result of Structural Hull Defect in material or workmanship which is reported within five (5) years (60months) from the date of the first retail purchase of the Boston Whaler Boat. The “Hull” shall mean the single fiberglassmolded shell and integral structural components. A Structural Hull Defect shall mean a substantial defect in the boat’sHull/Deck which causes the boat to be unfit or unsafe for general use as a pleasure craft under normal operatingconditions.

2. Limited Structural Hull Warranty - 5-10 Years: For any defect reported during the 60-120 month period from the dateof the first retail purchase of the Boston Whaler Boat, Boston Whaler will reimburse repairs or replacement as a result ofa Structural Hull Defect in material or workmanship on a pro-rata basis. Reimbursement will be based on the percentageof the number of months left of limited warranty coverage after the first 60 months have elapsed. A declining value of1.67% will be assessed to each month after the first 60 month period. For example, a defect is reported 6 years and 3months or 75 months after the date of purchase. 75 months minus the first 60 months equals 15 months of pro ratacoverage. The 15 months of pro rata coverage is multiplied by 1.67% and equals 25%. This means 25% of the warranty has expired. Therefore, any authorized repair and/or replacement will qualify for 75% reimbursement of the total cost.

Hull Identifcation Number

The “Hull Identification Number” is located on thestarboard side of the transom wall. This is the most important identifying factor and mustbe included in all correspondence related to your ves-sel. Failure to do so will only create delays. Also ofvital importance are the engine serial numbers andpart numbers when writing about or ordering partsfor your engine.

Our Hull

Boston Whaler® hulls are constructed with our pat-ented Unibond™ construction. This involves shoot-ing high density foam into a closed mold system. The foam expands to fill voids in the hull, and whenthe finished product is pulled from the mold, the deckand the hull are chemically bonded to form a solid, inseparable unit.

Tank SelectionThere are a pair of 3-way gasoline valves that con-trol the flow of fuel to the engines. The fuel systemis designed to have the port engine supplied by theport fuel tank and the starboard engine by the star-board tank. The valves can be used so both enginescan be supplied by either tank. (If both engines willbe run from one fuel tank, the boat will eventuallylist to the opposite side of the tank being used). Thevalves have PORT, STARBOARD, OFF clearlymarked on the perimeter of each valve. Turn the valvehandles to the desired position for the appropriatetank. Be sure to always check the level of each fueltank and position of fuel valves to prevent the boatfrom becoming unbalanced while underway. The tankselector gasoline valves are located on the aft wallof the stern foldaway seat.

Fuel Vent EMPTY TANK:A fuel tank with levels less than 1/4 full can causeproblems by stalling an engine due to fuel starvationor by allowing sediment and dirt to enter the fuelsupply lines. Keeping the tank filled will reduce thechance of this occurance; since the residue will mostlikely settle to the bottom of the tank. Monitor thefuel level often to prevent this from happening.

HOSES AND FITTINGS:Hoses and fittings should be inspected at least every100 hours. Check the hoses for cracks, abrasions anddeterioration and the strong smell of fuel prior tostarting the engine(s). If the hoses or fittings are dam-aged or worn, replace them with only marine grade

Remote Oil Tank Location(sterndeck has been removed)

Optional engine oil supply, 2-3 Gal. (11.3L)

The 320 Outrage may be equipped with a remote oilsystem. This system consists of two 3-Gal.(11.3L)reservoir tanks and hoses which contain and meterlubricating oil to the engine(s). The tanks have anexternal fill located on the aft side of the cockpit tran-som wall. Access to the tanks is through themotorwell access hatch. When recapping the fillmake sure that it is secure to prevent spills and toprevent the intrusion of water into the system. Yourremote oil tank is secured by a nylon strap and quickrelease clip. Little maintenance is required for theremote oil system, aside from checking the hoses forabrasions and cracks and hose clamps for propertightness. The tank should not be exposed to ultra-violet light, rain or seawater for extended periods oftime.

Remote Oil System (Optional)

There is a danger that static electricity can ignite gaso-line vapors that have not been ventilated outside anenclosed area. Use extreme caution when fuelingyour boat from a source outside the regular venues,(e.g. marinas, fuel service stations.)Your boat has safety features that can be circum-vented by not adhering to standard fueling practices.Your boats bonding system protects it from creatingand discharging static electricity.Your boat must be in contact with the water or a landbased grounding system. Here are some helpful sug-gestions to keep you safe from static electricity whilerefueling your boat. • NEVER fuel your boat in unsafe conditions such

as: suspended on a sling or in a situation that in-creases the likelihood of static discharge.

• NEVER use homemade containers to fill your fueltanks.

• Fuel carried on-board outside of a fixed fuel sys-tem should be stored in an approved container orin a portable tank such as provided for outboardengines and be stowed safely outside of the engineor living compartment(s).

• Shut down the engine(s), motors and fans prior totaking on fuel. Any ignition sources should be ex-tinguished before filling the fuel tank(s).

• Close all ports, windows, doors and hatches.

• Fueling should never be done at night except inwell-lighted areas.

• Always keep the fuel nozzle in contact with thefuel fill plate or the edge of the fuel tank openingthroughout the filling process.

• Allow areas where gasoline vapors could collectto be ventilated before starting the engine(s).

• Wipe any spillage completely and dispose of ragsor waste on shore.

Static Electricity and the Fuel Systemreplacement parts. Your authorized Boston Whaler®dealer will have all the parts information you will need.TANK CLEANING:Excessive water and sediment may force you to con-sider having the tank professionally cleaned. If you arefrequently changing fuel filter/water separators and no-tice a loss in power, consult a professional tank cleaningcontractor regarding this procedure and proper disposalof residue and water.

• Secure the fill cap tightly.

• Portable tanks should only be filled while on theground; never on-board the boat.

REFER TO THE “Do’s and Don’ts At The Gas Pump”DVD IN YOUR OWNER’S MANUAL PACKET FOR moreinformation.

Ethanol is an oxygenated hydrocarbon compound thathas a high octane rating and therefore is useful in in-creasing the octane level of unleaded gasoline.

The fuel-system components of your Mercury engine(s)have been tested to perform with the maximum level ofethanol-blended gasoline (10% ethanol) currently al-lowed by the EPA in the United States.Special precautions should be considered with the useof fuel containing ethanol in your system. Fuels with etha-nol can attack some fuel-system components, such astanks and lines, if they are not made from acceptableethanol-compatible materials. This can lead to opera-tional problems or safety issues such as clogged filters, leaks or engine damage.Your boat was manufactured, and shipped from the fac-tory, with ethanol-compatible materials. Before introduc-ing gasoline with ethanol into your fuel tank, ask yourdealer if any components have been added or replacedthat are not recommended by Boston Whaler, Mercuryor may not be ethanol-compatible.

FILLING THE TANKIt is best to maintain a full tank of fuel when the engine isnot in use. This will reduce air flow in and out of the tankdue to changes in temperature as well as limiting expo-sure of the ethanol in the fuel to humidity and condensa-tion.

Example of Phase Separation

1234

1 2

34

The use of improper gasoline or additives candamage your fuel system and is consideredmisuse of the system. Damaged caused byimproper gasoline or additives WILL NOT becovered under warranty.

NOTICE

The use of fuels containing ethanol higher than10 percent (E-10) can damage your engine and/or fuel system and will void the warranty.

! CAUTION

E85 FUELS COULD SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOURENGINES AND MUST NEVER BE USED.

CondensationUpper Phase (water+fuel+ethanol)Lower Phase (water+ethanol)Fuel Inlet to Engine

Ethanol-Blended FuelPHASE SEPARATIONHumidity and condensation create water in your fuel tankwhich can adversly effect the ethanol blended fuel. Acondition called phase separation can occur if water isdrawn into the fuel beyond the saturation point. The pres-ence of water in the fuel beyond the saturation level willcause most of the ethanol in the fuel to separate from thebulk fuel and drop to the bottom of the tank, signifi-cantly reducing the level of ethanol in the fuel mixture inthe upper level (phase). If the lower level (phase), con-sisting of water and ethanol, is deep enough to reach thefuel inlet, it could be pumped directly to the engine(s)and cause significant problems. Engine problems can alsoresult from the reduced ethanol/fuel mixture left in theupper phase of the tank.

320 Outrage-Owner’s Manual

ADDITIVESThere is no practical additive known that can prevent orcorrect phase separation. The only solution is to keepwater from accumulating in the tank.If phase separation does occur, your only remedy is todrain the fuel, clean and dry the tank completely and refillwith a fresh, dry load of fuel.

FUEL FILTERSMercury already provides the appropriate level of filtra-tion to protect the engine from debris. The addition ofanother in-line filter to the system will create a possibleflow restriction that can starve the engine(s) of fuel.it is advisable to carry extra on-engine filters in case filterplugging from debris in the fuel tank becomes a problemduring boating.

MAINTENANCEPeriodically inspect for the presence of water in the fueltank. If any is found, all water must be removed and thetank completely dried before refilling the tank with anyfuel containing ethanol.

STORAGELong periods of storage and/or non-use, common toboats, create unique problems. When preparing to storea boat for extended periods, of two months or more, it isbest to completely remove all fuel from the tank. If it isnot possible to remove the fuel, maintaining a full tank offuel with a fuel stabilizer added to provide fuel stabilityand corrosion protection is recommended.

Your 320 Outrage uses a battery selector switch tocontrol delivery of DC power from two batteries. Thebattery switches are located below the breaker panelon the aft bulkhead inside the console. The dual battery switches have four (4) settings: • “OFF”, you will have no power to the engine(s). • “ALL”, you will have power from both batteries

at the same time. This parallels the batteries toassist you in starting the engine(s), once the en-gine is started the battery switch should be takenoff of the “ALL” setting, and set to charge eitherbattery .

• “1”, you will have power from the port battery only. • “2”, you will have power from the starboard

batteries only. When the engines are shut down or not providing acharge, the system will draw power from the starboardbatteries. This will allow you to run all the boats func-tions without affecting the port battery. You can runthe starboard batteries down and still start the enginesby moving the selector knob on the battery switchesto the “ALL” position. The battery switches are lo-cated below the breaker panel on the aft bulkhead in-side the console. When a battery discharges, the active material on bothpositive and negative plates converts to lead sulfate, causing the plates to become more alike in an elec-trical charge. The electricity conducting battery acidbecomes weaker and the voltage drops. As the bat-tery remains discharged, the process continues untilrecharging the battery becomes impossible. If the battery does become run down be sure to re-charge it as soon as possible. Over charging the bat-tery can be just as detrimental to its life as running itdown too far.

320 Outrage-Owner’s ManualIgnition Shutdown Switch

The 320 Outrage is equipped with an ignition shut-down safety switch. It is located on the lower centersection of the console. The ignition shut down safetyswitch incorporates a shut-off switch, switch clip, lanyard and lanyard clip, which is clipped to the op-erator. If an emergency arises where the engine(s)must be shut down, a pull on the cord to release theclip from the shut-off will shut down the engine. This switch is designed to shut the engine(s) off whenthe operator of the boat leaves the control station, either accidentally by falling into the boat, or by be-ing ejected overboard. This would most likely occuras a result of poor operating practices. This switch only works when properly used. The de-cision of whether to use an ignition safety switch ornot rests with you, the owner/operator.

It is advised that you wear your lanyard at all timeswhile operating the boat. It is for emergency stoppingonly. Do not use it to shut off the engine during normaloperation. The lanyard should be long enough to pre-vent inadvertent activation.

MAINTENANCE:Very little maintenance is required for the freshwa-ter system, other than annual disinfecting and win-terizing. Periodically check the entire system to as-sure that the hose connections, tube fittings, electri-cal connections and mounting bolts are properly se-cured, and free of chafingDISINFECTING THE SYSTEM:Before you fill the freshwater system it is vital that itbe properly disinfected. The following procedure isrecommended to disinfect the freshwater system: • Flush the entire system thoroughly by allowing

potable water to flow through it. • Drain the system completely. • Fill the entire system with an approved disinfect-

ing solution (check with your dealer for recom-mendations).

• After disinfecting, drain the entire system. • Flush the entire system thoroughly several more

times with potable water. • Now the system is ready for use, fill with pot-

able water.Ask your dealer if this has been done and what pro-cedures are needed to accomplish this. This shouldbe done annually or before using the system if it hasbeen laid up for an extended amount of time.WINTERIZING THE SYSTEM:If the water system will not be used for an extendedamount of time it is recommended that it be drained.Draining the freshwater system will require you en-ergize the freshwater pump switch on the instrumentpanel, press the button on the freshwater shower headand empty the freshwater tank. Next disconnect thehoses to and from the water pump to allow as muchwater as possible to drain out. De-energize the freshwater pump switch. Some service facilities may rec-ommend filling the freshwater system with a non-toxic, non-freezing solution. This procedure shouldbe completed by an authorized service center.

STEERING

Hydraulic Steering Information (Op-tional)

Your 320 Outrage may be equippedwith a teleflex, hydraulic steering sys-tem. The hydraulic steering systemconsists of:

• Steering wheel and helm pump unit• Engine hydraulic cylinder• Hydraulic hoses and fittingsFor your convenience there is a lever at the base ofthe steering wheel that can be pushed to adjust thetilt angle of the steering wheel.OPERATION:When turning the steering wheel either clockwise orcounterclockwise, the helm pump forces hydraulicfluid through hoses to and from the engine cylinderwhich is connected to the tiller arm. The engine cyl-inder moves the tiller arm to port and starboard.

Continuous kinking, chafing, rubbing and twisting mayeventually weaken hose(s) to a point of rupture duringnormal steering operation. Visually inspect all hosesand fittings for wear and/or damage.

CAUTION! MAINTENANCE:Proper maintenance of this system will ensure worry-free usage for the life of your boat. Steering systemintegrity is imperative when engaging in recreationalwater activities. Special care and attention must betaken to ensure proper performance of the steeringsystem and should include the following: • After the first few hours of operation and at

regular intervals, check all fasteners and the com-plete steering system for security and integrity.

• Check all moving parts to be sure they are freeof salt build-up and other foriegn material.

• Inspect for corrosion. Any part affected by cor-rosion must be replaced.

• When replacing parts, self locking hardwaremust be used.

• Check the fluid level in the helm pump unit. • Lubricate slides on the engine cylinders. All steering systems whether mechanical or hydrau-lic require regular inspections, periodic adjustmentand occasional replacement may be necessary.

Your owners manual kit has a fill tube that can beused to replenish the hydraulic oil for the hydraulicsteering system. Read the manual for complete in-formation..

Your 320 Outrage has the option of using a state ofthe art “drive-by-wire”gear shift and throttle controlsystem. The Digital Throttle/Shift (DTS)® is the lat-est technology in recreational boating. There is aseparate user’s manual that will detail the varioussystems that can be controlled by the DTS®. Readand follow all instructions regarding the proper useof the DTS® system. The DTS® system can be moni-tored through the use of the SC5000 display. The SC5000 will give you a visual readout of all functionsregarding your boats engine(s), direction, and appli-cable fluid capacities.

Digital Throttle/Shift (DTS)®

The 320 Outrage is equipped with adual gear shift/throttle control unitmounted directly starboard of thesteering wheel. The dual gear shift/throttle control unit activates both

shifting mechanism and throttle. The control mustbe in the “NEUTRAL” position to start your engine.Neutral is the most upright position of the controlunit and acts as an idle. There is a “THROTTLEONLY” button at the center of the throttle controlthat when depressed will disengage the shiftingmechanism and will allow you to operate the throttlewithout engaging the propeller. This button will au-tomatically engage the shifting mechanism once thethrottle control has been moved back to its centerposition (you will hear and feel a click when it isengaged). Moving the lever forward engages the for-ward gear and then the throttle advance. To reversepower, bring the control lever back to engage thereverse gear and increase the reverse thrust. Thethrottle control regulates the RPM of the engine.Regulating the RPM of the engine will control thespeed of the boat. Pulling back on the gear shift/throttle control while moving at a high speed willcause a sudden slowing of the boat and will create afollowing wake which may rise above the transomand flood the boat.

Gear Shift & Throttle Control

Wind and sea currents can change how your boat re-sponds while in motion. Understanding your boat andits reactions at speed will make boating for you saferand more enjoyable.

CAUTIONShift controls into NEUTRAL before starting engine.Shift only when engine is at idle. Reversing at highspeeds can cause a flooding/swamping due to waterbeing pushed over the transom.

The power trim & tilt system allows you to raise andlower the engine(s) outdrive for trailering, launch-ing and beaching. The switch is a momentary switch;which means that constant pressure must be appliedto the switch during the raising and lowering cycle. This also allows for ideal boat angle (in relation tothe water surface) for a given load and water condi-tion. In most cases, best all-round performance is ob-tained with the engine adjusted so that the boat willrun at a 3° to 5° angle to the water. The power trimis located on the gear shift/throttle lever.Boats can be operated in a manner and speedsresulting in trim angles that cause visibility to beobscured. Motor trim, hull trim plane and speedare factors that affect a boat’s trim angle.

The helm seats on the 320 Outrage are independentlyadjustable for your comfort. There is a handle on thefront of the seat track that when pulled will allowthe seats to be pulled forward, there are hole stops inthe track that will lock the seat in place. The track has a maximum forward slide range of 6inches, (15cm).CARE & MAINTENANCEThe track system will need occasional maintenanceto remain in proper working condition. Sea salt , gritand dirt will build-up and interfere with the slidemechanism. Rinsing with fresh water after each usewill eliminate most salt and dirt residue. Make sureto pull the slide to its most forward position and rinsethoroughly. Check the slide every 4 months, depend-ing on usage. If neccessary, lubricate the slide andhandle with a marine grade grease for longevity andcontinued smooth operation.

320 Outrage-Owner’s ManualPropeller Information

Under no circumstance use a propeller which allowsthe engine to operate at a higher than recommended

RPM.

NOTICE

NOTICEIt is advised that you always carry a spare propeller, propeller hardware and propeller wrench on board.Should your propeller become damaged it can be eas-ily replaced.

Disconnect power by moving the battery switch to the“OFF” position prior to removing the propeller.

DANGER

The engine(s) on the 320 Outragehave been equipped with propellerswhich our tests have shown to bebest suited for general use under nor-mal conditions and load. In some

situations you may wish to change the propellers togive your boat slightly different performance char-acteristics. Changing your boats running surface, suchas the addition of bottom paint will affect the typeand size of propeller required. In general, changing to a lower pitch propeller willincrease acceleration and load pulling capability, witha slight decrease in top end speed. If you choose tochange propellers, the type should be discussed withyour Boston Whaler® dealer.

PROPELLER

All propellers are designed to provide maximum for-ward thrust, so the reverse thrust of the propeller willnot be as efficient. The 320 Outrage uses propellersthat are designed to counter-rotate, which means thatthe port engine’s propeller rotates the opposite di-rection of the starboard engine. This will balance thetorque effects of the engine’s and along with the hy-draulic steering will reduce driver fatigue by elimi-nating the constant need to fight the wheel.

TRIM TABTRIMMINGOPERATION

Trim Tabs

Your 320 Outrage is fitted with elec-trically powered trim tabs. The trim tabs are located on the lowersection of your transom and are usedto trim the list of your boat caused by

uneven weight distribution, too many persons on oneside of the boat, or strong cross winds. An untrimmedboat will: decrease the visibility the pilot has, reducefuel economy, increase wear on your engine(s). Whileaccelerating there is some loss of forward visibilitybefore the boat is on plane, the trim tabs can be usedto adjust for forward visibility while underway.Read all information supplied by the trim tab manu-facturer for its use and care.OPERATION:The trim tabs are controlled by rocker switches locatedon the center part of your console above the throttlecontrol. Short momentary bursts of the rockers

will achieve proper attitude of the hull. The trim tabswitch is marked “bow up” and “bow down”.Using the trim tabs will: • Level the boat; fore and aft. • Reduce resistance in the steering system. • Give you a smoother more stable ride. • Speed will increase and there will be less strain

on the engines.MAINTENANCE:The trim tabs are a completely sealed unit and arewaterproof and maintenance free. Aside from a gen-eral cleaning when the boat is out of the water youshould also inspect the planes and hinges for marinegrowth; remove as neccessary.

DANGER

Use only the lifting points specified. Using the cleats forlifting is dangerous and could cause serious injury ordeath and damage to the boat.

Lifting

There are labels marked “SLING” on the outside ofthe boats hull. Use these “SLING” points for liftingthe boat. Keep the lifting straps away from under-water fittings befoer lifting. Whether you are liftingyour boat out of the water for routine maintenanceor long term storage, there are some points to con-sider.• There are lift sling labels on your boats hull, use

these labels to properly place the slings.• If you are using a professional lifting service, it

is prudent to check all credentials and ask forproof of insurance to protect your investment.

• Use a wide, flat, belting sling for lifting , to mini-mize stress on the gunwales. Careful location ofthe sling is required.DO NOT PLACE SLINGS WHERE UNDERWATER FITTINGS WILL BE IN CONTACT.

• If you will be storing the boat on a lift, you mustuse a bunk type to evenly distribute the boatsweight.

• All drain plugs (i.e. transom, fishwell, deck, etc.)should be pulled out and the boat positionedwith the bow slightly higher than the stern so thatany water which is allowed to accumulate in thecock pit and/or bilge can easily drain from theboat.

!

Lifting sling labels(port & starboard)

The 320 Outrage has (6) 10 inch cleats; two located atthe bow, two located amidship and two located at thestern on the gunwale walls, between the under gunwalerodholders. The cleat is used to secure the boat to thedock. While loading/unloading or mooring, please learnthe proper way to secure the boat and how best to usethe mooring points of your boat. The bow eye is used tohaul and hold your boat onto a trailer. The stern eyesshould be used as tie down points while trailering theboat. The bow and stern eyes should never be used forlifting.Below is a simple diagram that shows a belayingknot; commonly used to secure a boat to a dock. This knot is will hold fast and is simple to releasewhen needed.

320 Outrage-Owner’s ManualHull Maintenance

Clean the bottom of your boat of marine growth im-mediately, if the debris dries it will harden and willmake its removal very difficult.Waxing of the exte-rior surfaces is recommended to be done at least twicea year to protect the gelcoat of your boat. Com-pounding may be neccessary to remove more stub-born stains and chalking from the surface of yourboat, compounding must be done after washing andprior to waxing. Check with your Boston Whaler ®dealer on a compatible rubbing compound for yourboat. When washing your windshield never use abra-sive powders, gritty cloths or steel wool. Alwaysuse a damp cloth or a chamois when drying. Metaltrim and fittings will stay bright if coated with a goodgrade metal polish or paste wax after washing. Stain-less steel is strong and corrosion resistant, but stillrequires maintenance to keep its appearance. Crev-ice corrosion, a brownish coloring; occurs where twopieces of stainless hardware meet. This condition is caused by impurities in water andair and can be cleaned easily with a good grade ma-rine polish using a sponge, cloth or small bristledbrush (for nooks and crannies).Hull Maintenance, (Blisters)The fiberglass and resin structure of your boat isporous (intrusion of water into the gelcoat will takesome time). Blistering is caused by water solublematerials in the hull laminate. The effect of osmoticpressure allows water to impregnate below thegelcoat and substrate; forming a blister. There havebeen extensive university studies funded by theUnited States Coast Guard regarding the cause andeffect of blisters forming in the gelcoat of fiberglassboats. Fiberglass blisters can form in near-surfacelayers of the gelcoat to very deep into the fiberglassstructure. The damage can range from cosmetic tocatastrophic, (although the latter is a very rareoccurance). The studies seemed to point toward longterm immersion of the hull in warm water as a pri-mary cause of hull blisters. Stress cracks on the hullsbelow the waterline also contributed to the forma-tion of blisters on the hull. There are a variety ofways to prevent the formation of hull blistering: Ep-oxy coatings can be applied to the hull, followed byhull painting.

An alkyd-urethane-silecone marine paint can also beused to aid in the prevention of hull blisters.Reducing the amount of time that your boat stays inthe water also helps prevent hull blisters from form-ing. Use of a trailer or boat lift will reduce theliklihood of hull blisters forming. Be sure to use abunk type lift or trailer for long term storage of theboat out of water. If blisters are present in the hull;they need to be properly cleaned and dried out be-fore any barrier protection can be applied. Contactyour Boston Whaler® dealer for more informationon prevention and treatment of hull blisters.

Bottom Painting

Painting the bottom of your boats hull is a good wayto slow the formation of hull blisters, and also keep-ing bottom growth (fouling) under control. To deter-mine the waterline, you will need to place the boatin water and with a full load of fuel and gear, markthe waterline. Measure above the marked line 1 to 3inches for placement of the tape line. Masking tapeis not recommended for the types of paint you willbe using. Preparation is the key to a successful hullpainting. If the hull is bare, the gelcoat will have tobe dewaxed before sanding can begin;otherwise thewax will be dragged into the scratches and will re-duce the adhesion properties of the paint. After thedewaxing is complete, light sanding with 80 grit pa-per is recommended. Proper ventilation and captureof the dust created by sanding is essential. The dustcreated is toxic and should not be breathed. A properfitting respirator must be used. DO NOT use a paperfilter mask. The paint can be applied after sandingand cleaning is complete. Follow the manufacturer’srecommendation for applying the paint. Humidity andweather will play a role in how and when the paint isapplied. Several thin layers are better than one thicklayer.

DANGER

There are risks and dangers inherent with the use ofpaints and solvents. Dispose properly of all rags, roll-ers and trays used for painting. Follow all the precau-tions and regulations listed by the manufacturer beforeand after painting your boats hull.

Painted Hull Care (Bottom)

Make sure that there is enough paint left to coverareas that were not accessible, (slings, jackstands etc.)and paint accordingly. Follow the manufacturer’s rec-ommendation for do’s and dont’s after the paintingis complete. If the hull bottom is already painted, you must be sure to test the paints adhesion to thealready painted surface. If the paints are incompat-ible, the new paint will not adhere to the hull bottomor the paint will “Lift” the old paint. NEVER applypaint without first preparing the old painted surface. The paint is designed to resist algae growth whichmeans it has chemicals embedded in the paint thatare harmful if ingested. Take all necessary precau-tions required before painting or repainting your boatshull. Painting your boats hull will adversly affect theboats speed and perfomance. If your boat will spendmost of its time in the water, it might be a good ideato paint the hull bottom, if you will be trailering theboat to and from the water, you might want to forgothe painting. This is an abbreviated section on paint-ing your hull bottom.Your Boston Whaler® dealershould have information on properly painting youboats hull or recommendations on businesses thatwill paint your hull for you.

The painted hull bottom will need to be inspectedannually. Any growth will affect the boats perfor-mance and overall look. If it has been a while be-tween inspections you might notice algae or slimegrowth. This can be cleaned with a coarse towel orsoft bristle brush. The growth should be cleaned im-mediately after the boat has been removed from thewater. If the growth is allowed to dry it will be thatmuch harder to remove. If the growth is more se-vere, you may need to enlist the services of a profes-sional hull cleaning company. Fresh water, salt wa-ter and water temperature can all affect the types ofgrowth that you will find on your boats hull.

Long Term Storage

Never start or run your outboard (even momentarily)without having water circulating through the coolingwater intake holes in the gear case. This will preventdamage to the water pump (running dry) or overheat-ing of the engine.

NOTICEStore the batteries in a cool, dry location. Keep thebatteries in their plastic boxes. Periodically check thebatteries during storage.

Periodically haul the boat out of the water and scrubthe bottom with a bristle brush and a solution of soapand water. For better protection paint the hull belowthe waterline with a high grade anti-fouling paint.

NOTICE

CAUTION

Storage or winter lay-up will require you to makesure that your boat and its systems are properly con-ditioned for extended periods of non-usage.It is important that you follow all the recommenda-

tions set by the engine owner’s operations manual. It will give you a schedule of when these importantfunctions need to be done.ENGINE:Protecting your engines vital moving parts from cor-rosion and rust caused by freezing of trapped wateror excessive condensation due to climatic changesis very important. Internal engine parts can be ef-fected by rust due to lack of proper lubrication. Freez-ing water in the engine can cause extensive damageto the internal moving parts.FUEL SYSTEM:Tank(s), hoses, fuel pump and carburetor should betreated to help pevent the formation of varnish andgum. Temperature extremes cause condensation toaccumulate in the fuel tank(s). Empty gas tanks col-lect condensation which could lead to fuel contami-nation and/or premature wear of your system.TRAILER STORAGE:If you will be storing the boat for an extended amountof time on its trailer, you will need to lift the traileroff of its wheels. Use care when raising the trailer. The surface should be level and conditioned to ac-cept the weight of the boat and trailer and allow foradequate drainage. Covering the wheels will protectthem from harmful UV rays. Repeatedly immersingthe trailer in water during boat launching can causea variety of problems. Water seeping into the wheelhubs will cause the grease to emulsify and can pre-maturely corrode the bearings. Check with the trailermanufacturer for scheduled maintenence of youtrailer.ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:The battery should be removed from the boat. Re-move the negative (-) cable first, then the positive(+) cable and the battery given a full charge. Cleanthe external surface of the battery and check all wa-ter levels before and after charging. Grease both ter-minals and bolts on the cable ends.DRAINAGE:It is important to raise the bow of the boat enough toallow for proper drainage of water from the deck andbilge area. Make sure all the drainage fittings are clearand free of debris. Store the engine in an uprightposition to promote adequate drainage of water.

NEVER trailer the boat with the sun-top in the openposition. Damage to the frame, canvas and securingstraps can occur. Use the protective boot when thesun-top is being trailered or stored.

NOTICE!

Chafing, fiber wear from dirt and grit and deteriora-tion from ultraviolet light can cause your canvas suntop and covers to degrade over time. The effects ofultraviolet light can sometimes be reduced by chemi-cal treatment of canvas items. Consult your BostonWhaler® dealer or check with your owner’s manualbefore using any chemical treatments on your can-vas. To keep the canvas and metal parts in good work-ing condition and keep a good appearance, you willneed to keep them clean. The fabric should be cleanedregularly before substances such as dirt, pollen, etc.are allowed to accumulate on and become embed-ded in the fabric. The fabric can be cleaned withoutremoving the framework.Simply brush off any loose dirt, pollen, etc. hosedown and clean with a mild solution of a natural soapin lukewarm water (no more than 100 ° F. 38° C.).Rinse thoroughly to remove soap. Allow the canvasto completely air-dry. After each use especially insalt water areas, rinse the canvas completely withfresh cold water. Let the canvas dry completely be-fore stowing. All metal components of the canvasframe should be rinsed with fresh cold water and ex-posed components wiped dry to maintain appearanceand working order.Lubricate the snaps of the canvas with petroleumjelly, use a parafin wax on the zippers to keep themin proper working order. If you have stubborn clean-ing cases call your Boston Whaler® dealer for propercleaning procedures.Do not use bleach or solvents to clean the canvasmaterial.

Your 320 Outrage has the option of being fitted witha galvanized trailer. This trailer is best suited for yourboats length and width. If you have a trailer or planon purchasing a trailer separately; there are somepoints you need to consider. Having a center rollerand keel guards will help provide good support forthe keel, also provide good fore and aft support. Trail-ers equipped with rollers instead of bunks can dam-age the foam sandwich hull of your boat and shouldnever be used. Bunks provide a more even weightdistribution. It is importatnt that you follow all main-tenance schedules. Since most boat usage is seasonal

320 Outrage-Owner’s ManualAnchoring Information

The 320 Outrage is equipped with an anchor storagecompartment located in the bow of the boat. Wind andsea conditions can affect the boat. The boat is not mov-ing through the water, and without headway there is nocontrol.Note: before using the anchor be sure the anchorline’s bitter end is secured to the eye in the bot-tom of the anchor locker.STAY ALERT! Be sure that the anchor will hold underall circumstances if you are leaving the boat.Understand the principles of rode and scope and theireffect on anchor performance. The rode is the line connecting the anchor to the boat.Nylon line is ideal because it is light, strong andstretches, it also can be stored wet and is easy tohandle. Add a length of chain between the anchorand the nylon line to prevent abrasion of the line. The scope is technically defined as the ratio of rodelength to the vertical distance from the bow to thesea floor. Scope also depends on the type of anchor, tides, winds, sea conditions and type of sea floor theanchor is in.Minimum is 5:1 for calm conditionsNormal is 7:1Severe conditions may require a 10:1.Since you want to know how much rode to use whenanchoring, use this common formula:Rode length=(bow height + water depth) xScope*Scope factor may range from 5 to 10 or more.Any number less than 5 and the anchor breaksaway too easily.Be sure to read the owner’s manual supplied by theanchor windlass manufacturer before using the an-chor windlass. Follow all recommendations and in-structions regarding its proper use and care.

Lowering the AnchorBe sure that there is enough rope for the depth ofwater you will be anchoring in, and secure rode toboth the anchor and the boat. • Stop completely before lowering the anchor. • Keep feet clear of coiled line as it pays out. • Turn the anchor light on at night or during re-

duced visibility.Setting the AnchorThere is no best way to set an anchor. Experiment tosee how it performs. One method is to turn the rodearound a bitt or a cleat and slowly pay out as the boatbacks from the anchor site. When the proper scopehas been reached snub the rode quickly, causing theanchor to dig in to the sea bottom. • Reverse the engine slowly to drive the anchor

in and to prevent it from dragging. • Secure the rode to the bitt or cleat.Weighing the AnchorTo weigh (or retrieve) the anchor, start the boat andrun slowly up to the anchor, taking up the rode asyou go. The anchor will usually break out when therode becomes vertical. Coil lines to let them dry be-fore stowing.

BE CAREFUL THAT THE TRAILING LINES DO NOTFOUL IN THE PROPELLER.

SWAMPING HAZARD-Anchor from the bow if usingone anchor. A small current can make a stern anchoredboat unsteady; a heavy current can drag a stern an-chored boat underwater.

WARNING

There are a variety of anchors with a variety of uses.Discuss the types with your dealer to find the right typefor your boat.

LOWERING-Pushing the top part of the switch downwill power the anchor windlass DOWN. Make cer-tain that the anchor lanyard carabiner is detachedfrom the chain and is clear of any moving parts ofthe anchor windlass.RAISING-Pushing the lower part of the switch willpower the anchor windlass UP. Once the anchor androde is secure in the UP position, the anchor lanyardcan be re-attached to the rode.EMERGENCY OPERATION-There is a handle thatcan be used in case the power to the anchor windlassis lost.MANUAL DEPLOYMENT:LOWERING- There is a star socket used for manualdeployment of the anchor. Inserting the handle intothe center socket and turning it counter-clockwisewill loosen the anchor windlass chainwheel. Turn thehandle counterclockwise will allow you to lower youranchor, while turning it clockwise will raise it.

The anchor windlass is located in the anchor lockerThe anchor windlass gives you a mechanical meansof raising and lowering the anchor.OPERATION:The anchor windlass is controlled by a switch lo-cated at the helm. The switch is a momentary typeswitch; which means that there must be constant pres-sure applied to the switch to operate the anchor wind-lass.Power is activated by a push/pull button located tothe left of the operation switch. There is a power in-dicator light that illuminates when the switch is pow-ered. There is also a hand-held remote located in theanchor locker that you can use for raising and lower-ing the anchor. The power source for the remote islocated on the aft bulkhead of the anchor locker.CIRCUIT PROTECTION- There is a 120 amp cir-cuit breaker located on the MDP in the console. If this circuit trips, there is a lever that needs to bepushed up to reset the breaker. There is a red buttonthat can be used to test the breaker. If the breakercontinues to trip, have the anchor windlass systemchecked by a qualified marine electrician.

ADSS

The Active Deck Suspension System (ADSS) is arevolutionary, patented shock absorption systemdesigned to drastically reduce the amount ofimpact loading felt by the passengers on the boat.It is a pneumatic system whereby the weight on thesuspension deck is supported at the front by aircylinders and at the rear by a hinge, when thesystem is fully operational.

The system consists of three main components:A) The main suspension chassis located beneath the

helmsman.B) The air compressor, main air tank, expansion air

tank, in-line oil supply and water separatorlocated portside in the forward console..

C) The ADSS instrument panel located on the dash.

The system is powered by the on-board batteries andprotected by two thirty (30) amp breakers located onthe main breaker panel labeled ADSS.

The system only lessens the impact loading to thoseoccupants who are STANDING ON THE SUSPEN-SION DECK. Occupants outside the suspensiondeck will be subjected to normal impact loads.

DO NOT allow the system to give you a false senseof security. It reduces the vertical impact forces; itdoes nothing for reducing the forces of ROLL andYAW of the vessel. Please operate the boat respon-sibly in all sea conditions and never exceed the ca-pacity of the vessel or the abilities of the operator.

WARNING!

To power the system, press the top of the powerswitch, the light on the switch will illuminateindicating the system is powered. The air compres-sor will run until the pressure in the air tank is atnormal operating pressure. The suspension deck is supported by the liftingjacks when the system is not be in use. Afterturning the system on it will be necessary to lowerthe jacks in order to activate the suspension deck.To lower the jacks hold the bottom half of the“LIFTING JACKS” switch for 10 seconds. Afterthe air cylinders adjust to the amount of weightthat is on the deck (usually 2-3 seconds) the sus-pension deck will be supported on a cushion of air.The ride adjustment knob has progressive settingsthrough 3 modes, “Soft”, “Medium” and “Firm”.A “Soft” setting will allow the Active Deck Sus-pension System to absorb more impact, while the“Firm” setting will not deflect as much. The deckcan be adjusted to your comfort, depending on seaconditions. When leaving the boat for an extended period oftime it is good practice to raise the lifting jacks tosupport the deck. To raise the jacks, hold the upperhalf of the “LIFTING JACKS” switch for 10seconds. Once the jacks are raised the system canbe powered down by pressing the bottom of thepower switch.

Operation

If there is a pneumatic failure during operation thesuspension deck will lower and not return. If thisshould occur, raise the lifting jacks so the deckreturns to normal operating height and then powerdown the system. The suspension deck will remainfixed until the unit can be serviced.

Maintenance:Conduct maintenance every 100 hours of run time:

• Ensure oil reservoir is full.

• Drain the water filter.

• Check that all in-line filters are clearof contamination.

Emergency Operation:

Section 12 - ADSS

320 Outrage-Owner’s ManualIt is important to note that the air cylinders areequipped with pressure switches that automati-cally adjust for the amount of weight that is on thesuspension deck. When more people get on thedeck, the deck will lower momentarily until thesystem has had a chance to adjust for the extraweight. This adjustment normally takes no longerthan 2-3 seconds. In some instances, like in thecase of trolling, it may be more desirable to have atraditional fixed deck. In this circumstance, thesystem can be locked out by raising the liftingjacks by holding the upper half of the “LIFTINGJACKS” switch for 10 seconds. This will preventthe system from constantly trying to adjust forpeople moving back and forth across the cockpit.

It is also best to periodically check the oil reservoir. If the oil level in the reservoir gets low, add air tooloil to get the level back up to the fill line.
