“C’mon Aussie, C’mon, Cmon!” Australia Day. A time to celebrate a great nation and citizen of the world. And rightly so. What Aussie doesn’t smile or go goosey when we hear those words “C’mon Aussie, C’mon!”? There are some who might cringe but for the most part, they are cherished words. So it is no co-incidence that today, on Australia Day, when we can be easily distracted by the tensions around celebrating Australia Day, we are deeply challenged by the Gospel to stay focussed on and pay more attention to the “higher things” in our lives as Catholic Christian Aussies when “C’mon Aussie” might be heard coming from Christ Himself! To pay more attention to our calling as baptised disciples of Jesus Christ then to national tensions or our own personal needs. Celebrate or commiserate our day by all means, but let’s not let those activities or acrimonious political discussions distract us from our primary goal – to serve Christ sensitively, hopefully, and generously as good Aussies. In today’s Gospel, Jesus commences his public ministry full time. John the Baptist, His cousin, has been arrested and silenced. It’s time for Jesus to step up. And He does. He recruits His first disciples, Peter, Andrew, James and John. Peter and Andrew knew Jesus, but James and John had never seen Him until He invites them to follow Him. And they just set down their tools and go. An extraordinary response if taken literally. Desert their father, families, their work/income, literally give up everything and walk off to follow a man they had never seen. I don’t think it would be too much of a stretch to say that if that were to happen to us today, our response might be a little more guarded no matter how charismatic the inviter might be! Whilst it is unwise to make a literal interpretation of the Scriptures, when we look to the faith story behind the Gospel extract, it is readily apparent that Jesus invited them to join His ministry; they were people whose well-developed faith was integrated into their everyday lives – they lived it with conviction and generosity; and they responded accordingly. They lived in times of political uncertainty and occupation by a foreign force and were aware of the risks they were taking. That did not deter them. They remained focussed on the “higher things” – serving their God. So let’s not let the potential political unrest or any acrimony around Australia Day celebrations deter or distract us from celebrating with generosity and sensitivity and with our eyes squarely on the “higher things” – our mission as disciples of Christ. Go Jesus! Go Australia! C’mon Aussie C’mon, C’mon! COMBINED COMMUNITIES’ NEWS

January 26, 2020 - 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

“He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed Him.” (Matthew 4:22)

Just as Jesus called the first apostles, He calls each of us to follow Him, too. Not everyone is called to leave their business or family behind, but we are expected to put God first in everything. Everything; from our time in daily prayer, our talent in participating in one of our parish ministries, and our treasure to support the financial needs of our parish mission.

Did you hear about the three bears that were competing for the same job?

It was a grizzly competition between polar opposites but, in the end, one was way more koalafied.

Faith Matters www.faith-matters-gsm.com.au and Plenary Council www.plenarycouncil.catholic.org.au

This is what the Church’s Liturgical Year will look like between now and Ash Wednesday on February 26.

Jan 25, 26 – Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. Feb 1, 2 – The Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. This is also the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. This event is also celebrated in the 4th mystery of the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. Feb 8, 9 – Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Feb 15, 16 – Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Feb 22, 23 – Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time followed by Ash Wednesday on the date above.

This year a Lenten program (6 sessions) will be held in the Daley Centre on a Monday morning and a Tuesday evening during Lent – dates will be published in the newsletter next week. Mitchelton parishioners will be welcome to join the Daley Centre sessions as no Lent program will be available there.

A change this year will be that the sessions will continue for one week after Easter Sunday. This seventh Sunday will have the theme of the Resurrection. A way of looking at this change is to realise that Lent culminates in the Resurrection of the Lord. Our hard work in Lent leads to our sharing in the joy and hope of the risen Jesus.

The theme for this year’s Lent program is “Be Opened – A Journey to New Life”. More information next week and the enrolment sheet will also be available at that time

in the 3 churches.

Shrine to Honour Our Lady of Aitara

Some TLC members were able to attend the recent blessing of the new Shrine built to honour Our Lady of Aitara in the Marian Valley. The Timor Leste community joyfully celebrated the success of their fundraising and construction efforts, with some of the latter being provided by Michael Stevens and Jay whilst he was recently visiting from Liquica. At the end of the Mass celebrated by Bishop Ken, the much loved Timorese Canossian Sister, Odete Moreira said the Timorese people were devoted to Our Lady and saw her as their mother “who supported us through war, strife, suffering, invasion and illnesses”. The gathered community then farewelled Sr Odete who has been transferred to Darwin to minister to their Timorese Community. Anyone is welcome to visit this beautiful shrine, nestled amongst the many others in this peaceful setting.
