H A I L B R I T A N N I A !ROAD & TRACK ROADTESTS THREE BRITISH ROAD WARRIORS

The July 2010 edition of the popular auto magazine, Road & Track, featured three icons of the British sports car cottage industry– the Allard, the Caterham and the Morgan. Not the those associated with workers toiling over a forge in the middle of England, but the 21st century version of their namesake. In the hands of the magazine’s expert drivers, as well as R&T’s engineering editor, who’s actually driven the original J2X, the roadsters were put through their paces. On deck were the Allard J2X MkII, the Caterham Superlight R500 and the new Morgan Aero SuperSport. As the author cited, this is not meant to be a comparitive test, as the 4.8 L BMW-powered Aero SuperSport, the 2 L Ford Duratec Caterham and the 5.7 L Hemi-powered J2X MkII target different markets.

Authors give the Allard J2X MkII full marks for fit & finish, highlighting the engine-turned dash, the Muirhead leathers and the wide and deep footboxes. When it came to performance, the J2X MkII did a stellar job both in acceleration and in braking. The editor only had one problem... “The steering is too good!” His reference was to the roadster’s rack & pinion steering which is very precise and responsive– a ‘new’ experience for those that are used to power steering and sloppy handling.

You’ve probably pulled into a gas station at some point and read 3 little numbers above the nozzle of

the gas pump. These are usually 87, 91, and 93. Then you look a little higher at some more important numbers that said something like, $2.97, $2.99, and $3.05. Mo-ments later you’re pressing $2.97 and filling the tank. That $2.97 could be costing you more in the long run.

To first explain this, we need to go back under-stand how your car works. It starts with a cylin-

der that houses a piston to your drive train. The piston travels down and the cylinder is filled with charged air. This charged air has a ratio of fuel to air. The cylinder is closed off and the piston compresses the mixture. Once the piston gets to its top point the spark plug fires and burns the fuel and air. When the mixture burns it expands and pushes the cylinder down. The part that we’re going to focus on is the compressions part.

Compression causes a lot of heat. As we all know, gasoline is a fairly volatile substance. We don’t

want the gasoline to ignite during the compression pro-cess prior to the spark plug firing. This is called detona-tion.

Detonation is very bad for your engine. When the spark plug fires it doesn’t

cause an explosion, it causes a burn. The burn process, as it sounds, is a very gentle expansion. Detonation on the other hand is violent. It’s easy to hear an engine that is detonating from outside the engine, which is why it is commonly referred to as knocking. So it is very important to prevent detonation by using the correct octane.

Octane is actually an additive that prevents detonation. Gasoline is made of Heptane, which is very good for fuel, but doesn’t compress without igniting. So Octane, which compresses well, is added to the Heptane. Thus the idea of 87 Octane, which is 87 parts octane and 13 parts Heptane. Now with so many additives in gaso-line, the number doesn’t represent so much the octane/heptane rating as it represents how much compression gasoline can withstand before igniting. So think of it as a comparison.

So now that you know why the octane rating is important and what it signifies, we need to help you understand which one you should be using. Most vehicle manuals say the octane rating required for a specific vehicle. Some manufacturers even have it on the fuel door as a reminder, which is especially true of cars that require higher than normal octane. Some older vehicles may not even mention an octane rating. Back in World War 1 they discovered you could add tetraethyl lead (TEL) to gasoline, even in lower grades of gasoline, and greatly improve its octane rat-

A L L A R D M O T O R W O R K S

N u t s & B o l t sing, which caused many people to switch to what we now call today, Leaded Gasoline. Unfortunately Leaded Gasoline had two significant problems. The first was that lead can render a catalytic converter unusable in minutes. The second, and primary reason, is because lead is toxic. If your car requires leaded gasoline you can purchase a lead additive to be used with your gasoline which will suggest its proper usage. Why not just use the highest octane rating available to prevent detonation? That is an excellent question and in fact, many people do that. It’s a great way to waste money while mak-ing your car run badly. Remember that the higher the octane, the harder the gasoline is to ignite. If your car is set to run on 87 octane and you make it burn 93 octane it may not be as effective and some of the fuel will be wasted. That means you need more gas consumption to do regular work and that means burning more fuel and now that more expensive gas is being purchased more often. What if your local gas station doesn’t have the octane rating your vehicle requires? Simple answer is to go to where it is available. The majority of stations offer 87, while some sta-tions may not offer 91. Don’t feel like you need to go to 93 to make up the difference or purchase 89 and put in a fuel addi-tive to raise the octane which may or may not work.

The trick is to use the appropriate grade your car was designed for all the time. No higher, no lower. This way your engine is running optimally as it should. An optimal engine runs cleaner and saves you mon-ey! Make sure you keep up with regular service visits as well to make sure your en-gine is running optimally. If you feel your car is knocking or not running appropri-ately and you are using the correct octane, don’t raise the octane; consult your Ser-vice Advisor to make sure another problem doesn’t exist.

When discussing octane, many people ask about additives. This is a typical scenario. You just accidentally filled up your car with 89 and it requires 91, so you pick up a bottle of Octane Booster and throw it in. So was that bad? There are so many different products and so many different types of vehicles on the market that there is no hard fast answer for that ques-tion. Some people feel they have significant benefits and use these products regularly, while others say they are a waste of money. There just aren’t enough definitive tests out there to determine their effectiveness. Chances are it isn’t going to hurt your engine, but whether it’s running effectively is debatable. If you ever have a question, consult your trusted service man. Did you know that if you put the wrong octane gasoline in your tank that you can choose another level of gasoline to change the octane? Octane is just a mixture, so it can be adjusted by mixing variable octanes. It may not be perfect, but it may help if you accidentally hit the wrong button at the pump.

Oct. 1, 1950 – Erwin Goldschidt’s #98 Cadillac-powered Allard J2 started in 26th place on the Watkins Glen grid. One hour and 22 minutes later, over 125,000 race fans cheered Goldschmidt on, as he crossed the finish line in first place, a full minute ahead of Briggs Cunningham in his Healey-Cadillac. His average speed over the 6.6-mile course was 73 mph, with top speeds reaching 130 mph. Unfortunately, his win was marred by a competitor’s death, when Sam Collier’s red Ferrari left the course, rolled down a 6’ embankment and flipped end-over-end three times at 100 mph.

Allard.

„Unsere

The article, featuring both a historical overview and a detailed review of the new Allard J2X MkII roadster, made liberal use of the photos submitted. IN THE WORKSWhile the original Allard J2X had not top, a few J2Xs did have a windshield. AMW has replicated the original windshield but modified it to house all of the mechanical components, include DOT-approved laminated glass and attach a two-speed motor, thus making the windshield removable. The full wind-shield is an option but, the wiring, switches and plumbing required for the two washers are integrated into every vehicle, irrespective of whether or not the new owner chooses this option. The rationale is that if they have second thoughts a year down the road, or want to sell their MkII to someone else (heaven forbid), that the option to add the windshield is possible at any time.

The second part of creating an all-weather kit is the top– first a canvas top, then a hardtop. While this looks easy, it is anything but. Once you get used to the roadster look, it is difficult to add elements, without destroying the very reason you chose the J2X MkII– the design. Also, a top that is looks like a box is out of the question. So, using a few computer design savy, AMW sketched out a top design that respects the original round design of the MkII. What is illustrated is a) the bare car, b) the addi-tion of the windshield painted to the body color, c) the canvas top and finally, d) the side curtains. To keep ‘flowing lines’ on the car, fabric extensions stretch back over the rear fenders. As seen from the back, the rear window would open towards the inside of the cockpit and be secured to the inside top of the roof, allowing a free-flow of air out of the cockpit. What is critical here is that the fuel cap and roll bars be outside of the enclosure, for obvious reasons (fumes). This design can also be seen on a Ferrari Mondial and the 1972 Corvette. The real challenge is to make the unit water-tight, air-tight and easily assembled. AMW continues to work on this project and will provide information as we progress. AMW is always open to comments and suggestions.
