Antihypertensive combination reduces ventricular hypertrophy

Given time, a substantial reduction in ventricular hypertrophy can be achieved with a low dose combination of a ~-blocker and an ACE inhibitor.

Atenolol 50 mg/day combined with enalapril 10 mg/day reduced left ventricular mass, interventricular septal thickness and posterior wall thickness progressively during a 3-year study in 21 patients with hypertension. BP was reduced from 161/108 to 127/84mm Hg after 4 weeks of treatment, and remained at this level for the duration of the study.

Despite a 40% reduction in left ventricular mass, patients continued to tolerate a maximal isometric and dynamic work load with a peak systolic arterial pressure only 15% lower than prior to treatment.
