INTRODUCTION:- Indian Railways is the world's second-largest railway, with 63,028 kilometers of track,37,840 passenger coaches. Annually it carries some 4.83 billion passengers and among the 11 million passengers who climb aboard one of 8,520 trains each day, about 550,000 have reserved accommodations. Safe transportation of passengers is the key business objective of any transportation system. Railways are recognized as the safest mode of mass transportation and Safety has been recognized as the key issue for the railways and one of its special attributes. Accident Free System. Safety is, therefore, the key performance index which the top managements need to monitor and with this perspective in mind ANTI COLLISION DEVICE comes into picture.
WHAT IS AN ACD ???
“The ACD Network is a Train Collision prevention system patented by Konkan Railway Corporation
Limited (A Public Sector Undertaking of Ministry of Railways, Government of India).ACDs
have knowledge embedded intelligence. They take inputs from GPS satellite system for position updates and network among themselves for
exchanging information using their data radio modems to take decisions for timely auto-application of brakes to prevent dangerous 'collisions', thus forming a 'Raksha Kavach'
(meaning a '(Train) Safety shield').”
How does an anti collision device actually look like????
NEED OF ACD:
To prevent collision in railway
To decrease the timing between two consecutive train running at the same line
Can be used as tracking device

Types of ACD:-
LOCO ACD
GUARD ACD
STATION ACD
MANNED AND UNMANNED GATE ACD REPEATER ACD
FEATURES:- # Unique features – Prevents in a ‘mid-section’
‘Head-on’ Collisions
‘Side’ Collisions
‘Rear-end’ Collisions
Accidents at Level Crossings
# Detection of Train Parting / Jumbling.
# Station approach warning to the drivers.
# Speed Limit imposition
PARTS OF ACD:-
GPS (global positioning system) GPS RECEIVERCCU(Comand and control unit)RADIO TRANS RECEIVERABU(Automatic braking unit)
HOW DOES AN ACDWORKS ?????
In the a.c.d the radio single from the consolation of Global Positioning System (G.P.S) satellite or received by GPS receiver through by antenna. This signal is sent to the command and control unit that is(C.C.U) to extract the parameters related to the movement of locomotive like # Latitude. # Longitude. # Speed. # Angle. # Date and time.
Apart from the GPS receiver there is a radio Trans receiver inside the acd. It transmits information such as: # Identification no. # Speed Location in terms of Latitude, Longitude, and status of it working with the help of sprats radio antenna. It also received the information being send by other acd and is send to the C.C.U for processing all the received information from the other acd and the data from the GPS receiver.
The final module in the system is the braking mechanism, which envisages the CCU to take a decision for applying either the normal brake or the automatic brake (ABU) on the locomotive as the situation required

It does not require any inputs to be fed by the crew at the start of journey, thus human error is eliminated.
Very economical and cost effectiveEasily adaptable and expandableDoes not degrade the existing safety levelEmploys state-of-art hardware and software
technologyNo way side equipment required, hence no
requirement of PowerNo cabling on the track required (which is
more expensive and cumbersome)Less susceptible to Vandalism.
System Benefits
Future:- Pilot project of "Provision of ACD
Network" has been successfully commissioned recently on the Northeast Frontier Railway (of Indian Railways), covering 1736 Route km (of its Broad Gauge route). Final commissioning trials of ACD network installed on 760 km of Konkan Railway route is presently underway.
Anti Collision Device (ACD), which is an on-board train protection device and also the fi rst ever device in the world indigenously developed by Konkan Railway with their Technical Partner Kernex Microsystems (I) Ltd, will be in place by 2013 on the entire Indian Railway network so as to reduce chances of Train collisions.

While rail continues to be one of the safest modes of transportation, the overall safety has not significantly improved. Continuous improvement is important for achieving a better safety record. Through this innovative technique of early sensing of any possible collision scenario and avoiding it thereof we demonstrate that it is possible to improve the overall safety of the railway system in India.
