Pen Pals Seen 'N' Heard Tuesday December 10th, 2013 W henever we think of St. Joseph's College, invariably our mind conjures up the school at Darley Road, Colombo 10. But…hold on! Not far, from the bustling town of Nugegoda, is another school, held in high esteem by many - St. Joseph's College, Nugegoda. From small beginnings, this school has graduated to reach a very high level in education, with many plus factors. And they continue to march on! The school is now raising funds for a service building, says Bro. Chamara Hettiarachchi. And working hard on a fund-rais- ing event, to make this goal a reality, is the Prefect Association of the College. They have put together a musical event, and are calling it "Rhythm of the 70s." What makes this concert extra special are the acts that have been signed up to do the needful, on the evening of Sunday, December 15th, 2013. They have gone for probably the best line-up of entertainers - artistes who believe in keeping an audience ENTERTAINED. And there is variety as well. "Rhythm of the 70s" will feature Corrine Almeida, Annesley Malawana, Marazelle Goonetilleke, Rajiv Sebastian, Shyami Fonseka, Anil Bharati, Ronnie Leitch, Priyantha Fernando, and Errol Fernando. They will be musically backed by the Super Chimes. The venue is the Sri Lanka Youth J oey Lewis is going to be in Colombo for the festive season, and will be featured at the Galadari Hotel's 31st night bash, and later at the Margarita Blue. The singer, who does it the Neil Diamond way, did check out the local showbiz scene not too long ago this year (2013), and performed with Mirage at the Margarita Blue. He told The Island's "Star Track" that he is eagerly looking forward to his trip to his homeland, especially since it's the fes- tive period. "I love the festive atmos- phere that prevails in Sri Lanka, in December, and I'm very much looking forward to be a part of that scene," he said. Joey is now based in England. Also in our midst right now is Chitral Somapala - another great performer who is now based in Europe. J ay Z and his wife, Beyoncé, are turn- ing vegan to see if they can hack a strict no meat for 22 days, in support of the rapper turning 44 years old. Jay made the announced, via his web- site, Life & Times. The post read: "On December 3rd, one day before my 44th birthday I will embark on a 22 Days chal- lenge to go completely vegan, or as I pre- fer to call it, plant-based!!" Why 22 days? Well, according to the Brooklyn native, "Psychologists have said it takes 21 days to make or break a habit. On the 22nd day, you've found the way." He then further explained why he has chosen to go vegan now. "There's something spiritual to me about it being my 44th birthday and the serendipity behind the number of days in this challenge; 22 (2+2=4) coupled with the fact that the challenge ends on Christmas Day," he wrote. "It just feels right!" Jay calls this venture a "spiritual and physical cleanse" and asks for any vegans out there to aid him with advice as the 44- year-old isn't familiar in the practice of veganism, "Any professional vegans out there that have any great food spots please help out!" he wrote. "Please ha." P.S.," he added, "B is also joining me." The power couple has already domi- nated the music industry but can they con- quer the dietary world? Kanye West has referred to his mentor (Jay) as a "trend setter," which, in this case, is a good thing, as the rapper will, hopefully, inspire Americans to join him on the healthy eating regime. This announce- ment has also earned Jay a free meal tick- et from The Humane Society of the United States for his birthday. It contains a pass to New York City restaurant Candle 79, and recommenda- tions to healthy and humane eateries in cities where he's performing this month (December). Centre, Maharagama. Blast off time is 6.30 pm, and with such a star class line- up, "Rhythm of the 70s" is sure to turn out to be a mem- orable happening - not only for the audience, but also for the school authorities, of St. Joseph's College, Nugegoda, as well as the teachers, pre- fects, students and parents. Tickets, for this block- buster musical happening, can be purchased from the College office, at Nugegoda, and also from Sarasavi Bookshop, Nugegoda.
