Pastor’s ReportPastor’s Report on the Year 2016 ~ Pastor Eric Tonjes

It has been a pleasure to get to know Kish over the last nine months, and to start to serve as her pastor.

I'm never quite sure what to say in something like an annual report. I realize it is both for us as we reflect back on the year and also for posterity, but I've never been one to focus on a legacy on a page. My chief hope is that our life as the church might leave a legacy written on human hearts, people changed and grown and introduced to Jesus through our life and worship.

If there is one thing I want to attest to future generations about, it is the beautiful ways God has blessed this church. Not in terms of facilities or numbers or finances, although those are all things we consider in our annual report. But in the deeper, truer ways that matter.

Kish is a church where people are committed to Christ's call of love. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”1 Too often, the church turns into a place where people are out for themselves, or a faction, or an idea. But Kish is a place that clearly sees its brothers and sisters more than any of that. Which is a beautiful thing.

This love, too, is not meant to just be an abstraction. Not just a warm feeling. It is meant to work itself out in practical acts of help and service. “Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”2 There is a remarkable depth of giftedness in service, helps, encouragement and hospitality at this church. I want to especially bear witness to the ways Elizabeth and I experienced those gifts as we entered the community in the midst of her battle with cancer. We and our kids were welcomed, and an unimaginable amount of meals, childcare, and other practical helps have been gifted to us since we arrived.

Looking more practically at the last year, a few things are worth noting.

First, I want to bear witness to the good and faithful ministry of Rev. Craig Diestelkamp in the

interim leading up to my coming. He was a faithful shepherd to Jesus's little lambs, and I know many were blessed by his heart and ministry. It's a hard thing to serve a church for such a season of transition, and Craig did it well.

In terms of the ministry of the Word, we preached through the book of Colossians and the Sermon on the Mount. We also spend three weeks surrounding the election reflecting on our call to live as citizens of the kingdom of heaven and worked through an advent series taking a second look at some familiar stories surrounding Jesus's birth. I was both encouraged and challenged consistently by God through these series, and we sought to grow in our appreciation of what He has done for us in Jesus and how he calls us to live in response.

I had the blessing of officiating a wedding, with the help of Michael Smith, between Evan Bahler and Micayla DeVries. I also had the solemn honor of officiating funerals for Jenn Mueller and Margaret and Amos Meyer. All three deaths were deeply tragic, and my heart and prayers continue to be with all those involved, hoping in God's hand of comfort and the promise of the resurrection.

Speaking of Michael Smith, he left us in August to pursue graduate studies. He had been a faithful servant to our youth and to many of us for ten years, and he has the gratitude of both God and us for his love and care. He is a workman deserving of praise. We have been searching for a new youth director to take his place and pray that God would provide the man or woman He wills for this calling.

In the meantime I have been stepping into some of Michael's large shoes in addition to my normal pastoral duties. I've worked through a number of short series with both Junior High and High School Youth, looking at some parables of Jesus, some attributes of God, and wrestling with hard questions in faith and life. I've also been teaching Confirmation in Michael's absence. It has been an enormous privilege to work with and get to know these kids and see some of them processing realities of life and the gospel for, in some cases, the very first time.

Pastor’s Report, continued

I have been settling into life with our session here at Kish and enjoyed getting to know them. One of the most important things to have, as a church, is a group of people called and qualified to lead us well who faithfully execute this calling. “Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor,” says Peter.3 Certainly the brothers and sisters at Kish who serve with me in this capacity are worthy of it. We have wrestled with hard pastoral issues, practical decisions, and our desire to grow as servants of the church, and they have been faithful in all of these callings. We have also enjoyed the service of two elders and their spouses (Jim & Susan Moon, Brian & Sandy Brooks) in leading an adult education hour through the Sonship material that I know has been a blessing to many.

And there is so much else that could be mentioned. The faithfulness of the many who care for our children, blessing them through Worship Kidstyle and Sunday School, VBS and a Christmas program and personal relationships and love. Those who gather for Bible studies, those who faithfully pray. The sick that have recovered and those engaged in the noble battle against mortality that is old age. There are many ways the Lord has been at work, and I give Him thanks.

As I finish up these thoughts, I thought I'd share with you the particular things I am praying for the future of our church. There are always general things we should be asking God – that He would be glorified in our community and worship, that the Word would be rightly preached, that the Spirit would be active through it, that we might be growing in discipleship and calling our children and those outside the family of God to faith in Jesus Christ. There are also innumerable specific requests we have – people we know and love who are sick, who are grieving, who are struggling, who are looking for some provision of the Lord. However, in addition to both of those, I think there is great value in asking God for things in the future, specific things we hope for beyond our immediate circumstances. He can certainly choose to say “no” to such requests, and sometimes does, but nonetheless the life of faith requires risk, and that includes asking for things that we know might not come to pass. You don't have to join me in these prayers, but if your heart resonates with these things, I pray you would.

For the next year, here are the specific things I am praying for Kish:

• That we, by next December, would have a small group program where the majority of people who attend are connecting with others in community and discipleship.

• That we would have the youth director God desires on board by this summer.

• That at least three people who aren't in any way walking with Jesus would come to faith in Him through the ministry of the church.

• That I and our session would continue to grow in personally shepherding everyone who comes here.

And my ten year prayers – things I'm praying for the farther future of the church, things I know won't happen overnight but that I hope will shape our long-term direction:

• That we would have thriving ministries of children, small groups, and community outreach.

• That we would see a hundred more people in weekly service.4

• That we might be in a place where we could prayerfully consider church planting, perhaps in Rockford itself.

Alongside these prayers I offer my thanks for the privilege of pastoring this local expression of the family of God, and pray that He might continue to bless and keep her.

Eric Tonjes

3 1 Peter 5:17a4 A note on this: Numbers aren’t an end in themselves. I would rather have people growing as disciples than staying shallow and simply getting folks in pews. However, I would even more rather have both. And since our church has been through a rough season and had that many members active on a Sunday morning before it, I would love to see us grow back to that point. In some cases through folks returning, although many of them are growing and serving Jesus at other churches, which we should celebrate, but even more through people coming to know Jesus and the unchurched finding a home and place to grow.

Youth Ministries ReportSubmitted by Kevin Pavlik

Our church family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Michael Smith for serving as our youth director for these past 13 years. Michael returned to school this past fall to pursue his master’s degree in Public Administration. Michael’s love for Christ and his love for the youth was evident in all the ways he served; including small groups, Sunday school, confirmation, mission trips, summer camps and winter retreats.

Our church family wish the best for both Michael and Jennifer. Kishwaukee will always have a special place in our heart for them.

This past year our youth were privileged to be involved with a number of rewarding ministries.

Camp Ministry • Junior High Deep Freeze: partnering with Covenant Harbor ministry, Deep Freeze was a winter

retreat for junior high students. A total number of 28 students (18 girls, 10 boys) met in Lake Geneva, WI from January 15-17, 2016. Chaperones included Michael Smith, Whitney Lewellen, Ann Thurow and Brad Acton.

• Junior High Great Escape: this annual summer camp for junior high students has always been well attended by our youth. 37 of our students (18 girls, 19 boys) joined many other youth at Green Lake, WI during the week of July 11-16, 2016. Chaperones joining the youth that week were Michael Smith, Grant Holsinger, Dana Brooks, Leslie Showers, Whitney Lewellen and Natalie Williams as a Jr. Chaperone.

• Senior High Mission Trip: the mission trip for our senior high students took place up in Minneapolis, MN. 38 of our senior high students (21 girls, 17 boys) attended this mission trip which was held from July 24-29, 2016. Adults chaperoning the senior high that week included Michael Smith, Dana Brooks, Leslie Showers, Kim Hiort, Trent Magnuson, Bill Peppin and Whitney Lewellen.

• Great Escape Workcrew: imagine the number of students that attend Junior High Great Escape. Now, imagine the number of individuals it takes to help support this ministry for that entire week. Every year Great Escape needs students to work during the Great Escape week. These student volunteers are called workcrew members. Workcrew members are involved in two significant ways. First, they meet the week before Great Escape to receive training. Secondly, they work during Great Escape to help make this week-long experience unforgettable for all those that attend. Each year many students apply for positions as workcrew members but not all are given the chance to work. This past year 16 students from Kishwaukee were chosen to work! Each of these 16 students were required to pay $200 in order to work that week. With the gracious donation of $800 from the Missions Committee and $800 from the Camp Scholarship Fund, this was enough to cover half the registration costs for these 16 students. The other half was covered by their family.

The following students volunteered during Great Escape as workcrew members:

Brad Acton Hayden McCammond Olivia Bouback Nile McCammond Joy Chavers Ashley Richards Lauren Fischer Andrew Rogers Ellie Fischer Anna Rose Hannah Fleming Brennan Showers Taylor Hilliard Issac Ruthe Brody Kunce Caden Wiehle

Many thanks go out to both adult leaders and high school leaders for their continued support for the Wednesday night Junior High Program and Sunday night Senior High Program:

Wednesday Night Junior High Program: Adult leaders: Kari DeRosso, Darby Gensler, Wes McClendon and Joanne Reynolds High School leaders: Alexa Ballard, Anna Rose, Megan Rose and Clay Smith

Sunday Night Senior High Program: Adult leaders: Amber McClendon, Wes McClendon, Katie Peterson and Steve Peterson

ConfirmationConfirmation this year is led by Pastor Eric along with Earl and Kayla Fleming. All 13 of the eighth graders have been wonderfully engaged and curious as they learn the essentials of the faith.

Student Ministry This past fall Pastor Eric spent the first half of the semester looking at parables of Jesus that highlighted the realities of God’s grace and what He does for us in the gospel. The next few weeks Pastor Eric and the students talked about some questions that we as Christians struggle with. Finally, the students finished up with a brief series on some of the attributes of God and who He is.

Other Activities

• Junior High fundraisers include running a food booth at the Stillman Valley Fall Festival and selling pies. For Christmas, there were parties hosted by the Reynolds and McClendon families.

Personnel Committee Reportsubmitted by Gary Miles

We continue to be blessed here at Kishwaukee with a faithful staff that serves week-in and week-out with little attention. Through their service, Kishwaukee as a Church is able to minister to the congregation and community. Our 2016 non-ordained staff included the following:

• Youth Director – Michael Smith (through August)

• Administrative Assistant – Linda Vandiver• Worship Leader – Kathy Owen• Choir Director – Brad Owen• Organist – Neysa McCammond• Custodian – Dorothy Gocken• Kitchen Coordinator – Carol Davis• Nursery Directors –Kari DeRosso, and Chris

Amundson

2016 was a year of transition for us in that Michael Smith made the decision to return to school to pursue his Masters degree and new career path. Michael had served Kishwaukee for 10 years – well beyond the typical time for a Youth Director position. Needless to say, we were truly blessed by his tenure here for our congregation, the youth, and community. An open house to celebrate Michael’s (and Jen’s) service was well attended affording Kish and the community a time to show our love for them and wish them well and encouragement in their future endeavors. They will be missed but we trust they will continue to serve God in whatever vocation and service they pursue.

How do we talk about Kishwaukee Church staff without people immediately thinking; “Oh yes, where Linda Vandiver works”. It is a humorous anecdote that the most important person in any church… after Christ of course…. is the Administrative Assistant. In humor there is an element of truth and that certainly rings true here at Kish. Week-in and week-out, Linda handles a myriad of details, large and small. This past year we took the opportunity to thank Linda as a congregation more publically for her many years of service. But again, on behalf of the entire congregation and community, we are truly grateful for your constant presence and attention to detail in managing the Church Office and everything else that circles around it. And as anyone who has ever spent any time at all in the office can attest, Linda tackles all these responsibilities with such a presence of joy and willingness to help. She is a blessing to us all! So… Thank you Linda, for

everything that you do – so much of which goes unseen.

This year continued with Kathy Owen as Worship Leader. Kathy has continued to serve through her musical gifts and talents in leading the worship group students and adults. On behalf of the congregation, we are greatly appreciative of her willingness to serve as the Worship Leader and thank her for her commitment and the wonderful job she continues to do. We also are grateful for her extra efforts in those special services such as Easter and Christmas Eve. We also would like to express our gratitude to Kathy Owen for playing piano the Sundays that Neysa is unavailable. Thank you to Brad Owen for his continued leadership to our adult choir. The Choir remains a wonderful tradition at Kishwaukee and through the help of Brad, they continually make beautiful and joyous music unto the Lord. Also a thank you to Brad and the entire Adult Choir for their special music offered at Easter and Christmas. Those services are a special blessing to the congregation as we worship through deeply moving and beautiful choral music.

This year Neysa McCammond continued to bless us each week through her musical gifts with the organ and piano. Kishwaukee is so very grateful for Neysa faithfully sharing her gifts and talents in music. We also want to express our sincere gratitude to Neysa for backing up Kathy on the Worship team when Kathy is unavailable. It is truly a blessing to the congregation to have individuals so willing to help out serving in this way.

One of those positions that truly is behind the scenes… and pews, and in the corners, and everywhere else…. is that of our church custodian. Dorothy Gocken has continued to serve as our custodian so faithfully for us. Her year-in and year-out dedication to ensuring the beauty and cleanliness of the church is maintained is very much appreciated. While we want to especially thank Dorothy, we also know that Earl is an integral part of this custodial team. Thank you to both of you for your continued service. A thank you is also in order for our Kitchen Coordinator, Carol Davis. She manages the kitchen and supplies and ensures everything there remains in order. Having her serve as the focal for ‘all things kitchen related’ helps Kishwaukee utilize that facility in service to the congregation and community.

We also want to thank those who each week ensure our nursery children are well cared for. Kari DeRosso and Chris Amundson served this past year as co-directors for the Nursery. Together they ensure there is a presence each week in the nursery, that nursery coverage is scheduled each Sunday, as well as arrange coverage for special services. They also ensure the Nursery is maintained, clean, and safe for the children. Thank you to Kari and Chris and all the staff and volunteers serving in the nursery – this is a key ministry that allows the parents the opportunity to attend worship.

From a Personnel perspective, the 2017 priority is filling the Youth Director position. Session is pursuing candidates and we ask for your prayers that God will direct this process and lead the right person to Kishwaukee.

Finally, all of the above people serve Kishwaukee faithfully each week. I would encourage you to please take a moment to stop and thank them personally for their commitment and service.

Submitted on behalf of the Personnel Committee: Sandy Brooks, Randy Fruin, Gary Miles, Mark Overmyer, and Mary Yankus.

It is always a privilege to support our young people who desire to serve on short term mission trips. Heather Gorsegner shared the love of Christ to the people in Frakes, Kentucky during her college spring break. Along with her team Heather has made a difference one life at a time.

See her full report on the following pages.

We continued to support the Pregnancy Care Center of Rockford by filling baby bottles with coins.  Total baby bottle collection for Kishwaukee was $1,050.

We have been involved in many ways over the years with Rock House Kids in Rockford.  In the spring the mission team took a tour of the Rock House Kids facility.  We learned of an opportunity for us to serve by preparing a meal for the after school program.  We are providing a meal quarterly for 125 children.  The meal prep is done at the church and then delivered to Rock House Kids where the meal is served by staff and volunteers.

We supported our local teachers and students at Highland grade school with needed school supplies and sponsored an All Pro Dads breakfast for students and dads.

The Byron neighbors nursing home provided names and gifts tags for their residents for Christmas.  So many of you have provide these gifts over the years and your love and kindness is appreciated by the residents and staff.

We are grateful for for the many ways the individual person or the body at large faithfully continues to support the mission work here and abroad.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Heather GorsegnerCampus Ministries Trip to Frakes, Kentucky
Romans 12:6-8 says “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach, if it is encouraging, let him encourage, if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously, if it is leadership, let him govern diligently, if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.” I’ve been using my gift of serving since my freshman year of high school when I went on my first Youthworks trip and I’ve continued to use this gift throughout high school and college.
As a senior at Augustana, this was my fourth and final trip to Henderson Settlement with Campus Ministries. Henderson Settlement is located in Frakes, Kentucky; right on the Tennessee/Kentucky/Virginia border. Frakes is located in Bell County, which is one of the most poverty stricken areas in the country. The Settlement provides several services to the people of Frakes and the surrounding area. There are home improvement projects, a thrift store, a food bank, youth programs, a senior center, and more. Each year I’ve worked on different home improvement projects such as painting, flooring, and siding.
This year, my group and I were assigned to a home improvement project in which we were asked to build two 8x12 wooden porches—one for the front door and one for the back door of a trailer home. We worked on building these decks all week; despite the weather conditions of rain, snow, wind, and cold temperatures. The resident that we were building the porches for was this sweet woman in her fifties named Maddie Louise. She was so happy, excited, and grateful that we were there; but not just because we were building her new porches. Rather she seemed to really enjoy our company. In fact, she told us that she doesn’t normally talk as much as she was doing with us. She shared stories with us, told us some new recipes to try, and told us more about herself. Maddie also has such a good attitude and outlook on life. Throughout the week, I lost track of the number of times that she said that “We have so much to thank the Lord for.” This simple statement spoke volumes; Maddie doesn’t have much, yet she is so thankful for what she does have and she’s not going to complain about what she doesn’t have.
Although I was there to share my gift of serving, I felt that Maddie Louise was a ministry to me.
1 Peter 4:10 says “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” I have been so blessed to be able to use my gifts to serve these past few years and I look forward to any future opportunities that come my way.
Worship is the central focus of our gathering every Sunday morning and worshipping our Lord and Savior has remained at the core of glorifying God at Kishwaukee. We are truly blessed for the many opportunities we have to worship and the many talents that are offered to enrich those opportunities.
God has been so faithful. With Pastor Eric Tonjes accepting the call to Kish, we said farewell to our Interim Pastor, Craig Diestlekamp. We were been richly blessed with Pastor Craig serving as our Interim Pastor and grateful to him for his service and friendship. Pastor Eric officially started in early May and we are excited to see God’s hand at work at Kish though Worship and Eric’s preaching. On occasion again this past year we have had the opportunity to hear other preachers including our own Elder Brian Brooks as well as Michael Smith. We continue to trust God to raise up leaders as part of worship here at Kishwaukee and look forward to see what God has in store for us in 2017.
The Psalmist exclaims to “Sing to the Lord, praise His name” and we do! Music serves such an important role in our worship and we are so grateful to those who offer their musical gifts to help lead our worship of God.
Kathy Owen continues to serve as our Praise Team leader as well as serving as backup for the organist when needed. The Praise Team, has been blessed by willing volunteers, adult and student, to serve each week in providing praise and worship music. We want to thank them all for their commitment and sharing their musical gifts. And as a reminder, the Praise Team is always open to new members joining the praise group! So if you have hidden musical talents in vocal or instrumental, we can get you “plugged-in” literally and figuratively.
Looking ahead to 2017, we are looking ahead to expanding the Praise Team’s repertoire. Kathy has already begun creating her own arrangements of traditional hymns set to music in a more contemporary context. Our aim is to broaden the worship experience and draw upon those rich lyrics of many hymns while setting them in a more
contemporary and accessible music arrangement. But as always, the goal is to provide a meaningful worship experience for all and honoring to God.
Neysa McCammond continues to share her gifts in playing the organ for our worship services and it is a real blessing to have the traditional organ music incorporated into our services. Neysa also volunteers playing piano for special events and as a backup on the Worship Team. In addition, she serves as our pianist for the Chancel Choir. This music is challenging and we are grateful for all the extra time in practice and preparation that Neysa puts into these extra activities. It demonstrates a love for the gift of music and a heart to share that with others. Thank you!
The Chancel Choir, led by Brad Owen, continues to enhance our worship. We thank Brad and each member of the Choir for their time and dedication and for sharing their considerable talents with us. In particular we want to thank the Choir for those beautiful special services during Easter and Advent where deep and moving music form a central part of worship.
There also are so many who have shared their musical gifts through Special Music throughout the year. You have certainly enhanced our services in a creative way and we are grateful.
While what we see up front tends to be the focus, there are many individuals who serve in various capacities to support our worship services. Without this support network, many of the things “behind the scenes” which aid and facilitate worship simply would not get done. This includes Liturgists, Ushers, those handling the Audio/Visual equipment, creating and collating bulletins, administration, organizing moments for missions, greeters, and communion preparation. We are always looking for additional people to help serve in these areas of worship ministry, so if you feel led to serve in this area, please contact any member of the Worship Team and thank you!
We remain excited by the movement of the Spirit at Kishwaukee and the opportunities God has in store
for us ahead. As part of the Worship Team, our aim is to provide a setting for community worship together in love and joy helping each other praise God, grow in faith and commitment to Jesus our Lord from which we can go and serve our friends, community and beyond in Christ. We know that starts with letting Christ transform us from within and it is our prayer that worship at Kishwaukee remains at the core of everything we do to Glorify God. May God’s Spirit and the love of Jesus continue to be evident in each one of us individually and as a community as we gather together to worship at Kish.
In Christ’s Love,
The Worship Team: Brian Brooks, Sandy Glendenning, Nancy Kester, Gary Miles
The Servanthood team has had a great year with 182 hours of service. I would like to thank our volunteers for the great work they did.If you would like to join our team, please let Stan or Bruce Gerardy know, and please let us know if you or someone you know needs help with anything.After 7 years of helping others, I needed help this year after my surgery. Thank you to all who helped me, especially the guys in the picture. God is so good.
Page 40
Page 40: ANNUAL REPORT for 2016...ANNUAL REPORT for 2016 8195 Kishwaukee Road ~ Stillman Valley ~ Illinois ESTABLISHED 1844 Annual Congregational and Corporation Meeting Sunday, February 12,
2) Mission of Local Churcha.) The mission of KCEPC is to glorify God through worship, discipleship, fellowship, service and evangelism, presenting to Him people mature in Christ who take His Gospel into the world. Thus, KCEPC offers a home and church community for followers of Jesus Christ and also for those seeking to find a relationship with Him.
b.) Fundamental to its mission, KCEPC affirms these Core Beliefs:• There is one true God who loves us and who created everything. • God created us for fellowship with Him, but our sin separates us from God. • Jesus, God's Son, lived a sinless life, died, to pay the debt of our sin, and rose victorious over the power of death. • Those who believe in Jesus and repent of their sin are forgiven by God through the blood of Jesus and will live with God
forever. • The Holy Spirit, God’s presence, guides and comforts us in this life. • The Bible is the infallible and authoritative Word of God which teaches us about God and how He wants us to live. • God wants us to love Him and to love others as He loves us.
3. Constitution of the EPCa.) The Constitution of the EPC (the “EPC Constitution”) consists of the Book of Order (comprised of The Book of Government, The Book of Discipline, and The Book of Worship), the Westminster Confession of Faith (including the Larger and Shorter Catechisms) and the document “Essentials of the Faith.”
b.) As a congregation within the EPC, KCEPC is subject to, and its mission and activities in connection therewith are to be carried-out in accordance with, the mission, faith, and doctrine of the EPC as defined and set forth in the EPC Constitution.
c.) The Westminster Confession of Faith is the Confession of faith governing the EPC and sets forth and preserves its commitment to the historic orthodoxy of the Reformed Faith. The Essential Tenets of the Faith, a harmonious document, defines core beliefs of the Christian Faith and sets forth and preserves the EPC’s commitment to historic evangelism. The Book of Government sets forth the form of government of the EPC. The Book of Worship also sets forth the doctrinal principle of the EPC, concerning various theological subjects, including: “Man’s Chief End” (Chapter 1); “Public Worship of God” (Chapter 2); “The Sacraments” (the Sacrament of Baptism and the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper) (Chapter 3); “The Worship of God at Other Times” (Chapter 4); “Christian Marriage” (Chapter 5); “Christian Burial of the Dead (Chapter 6); and “Service to God” (Chapter 7).
