12017 ANNUAL REPORT

INTRODUCTIONAs the Shriver Center celebrates its 50th anniversary year, we find ourselves at an historic crossroads in the struggle for justice. Important anti-poverty programs and civil rights protections to face threats at the federal level. Now more than ever, it’s time to stand up for a more just and equitable society. Right now is the time to get to work.

Fifty years ago, our founder Sargent Shriver inspired us to believe that everyone deserves equal access to justice and opportunity. Today, we are the lawyers, community activists and allies across the country joined together as one of the nation’s leading advocates for the poor, giving voice to the 43 million people living in poverty.

22017 ANNUAL REPORT

DEAR FRIENDS OF THE SHRIVER CENTER:

For 50 years now, the Shriver Center has been working to reduce poverty in America. We have been given a great legacy by our founder, Sargent Shriver, and the advocates who came before us.

As we move beyond this historic crossroads and contemplate the future, we know that work to advance justice and opportunity for all is as vital to our nation’s future as it is to our present. The Shriver Center will continue to work with people in poverty to push for fairness, inclusion, and opportunity. We will help them gain power and build leadership to have a voice and influence in the policy debates that affect their lives and communities. We will fortify our own capacity to change systems through policy advocacy, litigation, and multistate advocacy. And we will build our circle of partners and equip new generations of lawyers, activists, and advocates to carry the work forward.

We will not waver in the face of sabotage and disruption to the principles that make the United States of America the land of opportunity. We will resist harmful changes with all our strength, but we will also continue to push hard toward the positive vision that defines real progress in the fight to end poverty. Justice for everyone needs you. Thank you for your support.

ADVOCATING FOR LAW, POLICY, & SYSTEMS CHANGE ON BEHALF OF PEOPLE LIVING IN POVERTYWe believe justice for all is fulfilled when people in poverty have a seat at the table and have strong opportunities for upward mobility. Our Advocacy unit takes on multi-issue and multi-state work shaped by the everyday experience of individuals and communities.

Housing, healthcare, criminal justice reform, public benefits—we focus on issues that deeply affect the lives and social mobility of people living in poverty. We look for ways to move the action from defense to offense. We advocate for systemic change that has a broad impact, pushing for solutions that work for all. And we track strategies and tactics that worked in one state, and modify them for the battle in the next.

LEADING MULTI-STATE NETWORKS TO ADVANCE AN ANTI-POVERTY & RACIAL JUSTICE AGENDAWe build networks of lawyers, community organizers, activists, and allies across the country working to end poverty and achieve racial justice at the federal, state, and local levels. Through our groundbreaking Racial Justice Training Institute, we’re developing a national network of nearly 200 equal justice advocates committed to advancing a coordinated racial justice agenda. And through the Legal Impact Network, a dynamic collaborative of 34 state-based advocacy organizations across the country, we track strategies and tactics that worked in one state and modify them for the battle in the next.

CONNECTING, EQUIPPING, AND MOBILIZING THE EQUAL JUSTICE COMMUNITYWe believe that building the skills and capacity of advocates for low-income people will result in bigger, better, and bolder gains for people living in poverty. The Shriver Center’s Advocacy Resources and Training program offers specialized training and leadership development to hone advocates’ skills and connect them to each other and to the intelligence and information resources they need to be effective. Rooted in social justice and racial equity values, our training programs are designed to foster innovation and collaboration. Our Clearinghouse Community offers legal aid advocates a place to connect with one another and find tools and resources to advance their important work.

OUR IMPACT

52017 ANNUAL REPORT

The Shriver Center experienced significant growth and diversification of revenue sources in 2016. Highlights include the adoption of a new strategic plan focused on strengthening our ability to make change through policy advocacy, litigation, and multistate advocacy, while building the infrastructure necessary to support continued growth and organizational excellence. In 2016, the Shriver Center also launched the Shriver Challenge, a multi-year major fundraising campaign, initiated with a $1 million lead gift from the five children of Sargent and Eunice Shriver, which will position the Shriver Center for long-term growth and stability.

Audited financial statements for 2016 are available on our website.

NO ONE CAN DO THIS WORK ALONEWe are immensely grateful to the donors and funders who make our work possible. Their gifts leave a legacy of justice and opportunity for future generations to build upon.

We can’t wait for “one day” to make a more just and equitable society. Right now is the time to get to work. How well we succeed will depend on how many of us show up and put our ideals into action. Join us in the fight.
