As college students search for rich domestic experiences to add to their education portfolio, collegiate study away becomes the solution. Many students seek travel for a semester of cultural immersion throughout other parts of the country; NSE enhances this process.

NSE fits into university initiatives for global engagement by promoting the diversity of the North America. Our member campuses report domestic study away as a high impact practice supporting student satisfaction and persistence. Membership options and tuition reciprocity provide opportunities for campuses to expand their institutional resources and develop flexible academic partnerships.

The NSE consortium is funded through institutional membership and student application fees. It is facilitated by an administrative office and governed by a Council elected from within the membership. The values that guide us are found in our mission. National Student Exchange inspires academic enrichment, personal exploration, and student development by facilitating collegiate study away.

MISSIONNational Student Exchange inspires academic enrichment, personal exploration, and student development by facilitating accessible collegiate study away among member colleges and universities throughout the United States, Canada, and U.S Territories.

NSE Application Fee AwardIn honor of the NSE 50th Anniversary in 2018, the NSE Application Fee Award was created. Funds were generated for the award with the introduction of a Silent Auction during the NSE Placement Conference. The National Student Exchange application fee award is designed to support exchange-bound students in meeting the cost of the NSE application fee.

The award provides financial support equivalent to the NSE student application fee (currently $150.00). It is intended to enhance the possibility of exchange for students who are unable to meet the expense of the application fee when applying for exchange. NSE encourages institutions to waive their portion of the application fee for students receiving this award.

The criteria for eligibility to receive the NSE Application Fee Award:• Students must demonstrate Pell Grant eligible financial need as determined by filing the

FAFSA and submitting verification from their campus financial aid office.• Students must be designated as a potential applicant for National Student Exchange.• Students must be eligible for exchange as designated by the home coordinator.• Students must possess the potential to succeed and benefit from an NSE exchange.

This award is available to NSE applicants seeking priority exchange at the March NSE Placement Conference. Students may study any major offered at a participating NSE institution. Sufficient funds were raised in 2018 to offer ten application fee awards for 2019 placements.

Learning OutcomesThe NSE Assessment committee developed student learning outcomes to enable future assessment projects. As a result of participating in the National Student Exchange, students will:

1. Demonstrate confidence in their independence, goal accomplishment, and sense of self.

2. Express intercultural understanding regarding the historical and cultural composition of the home and host campus.

3. Differentiate contrasting viewpoints of the home and host campus culture.

4. Organize, construct, and deliver concepts and ideas that effectively communicate the value of student exchange.

5. Establish relationships of respect and empathy with faculty, staff, students, and community of the home and host campus.

6. Evaluate and integrate experience and skills gained from the student exchange experience for application in academic and professional practice.

Governance and AdministrationThe National Student Exchange governing board (Council) is composed of the president, vice president, and five NSE Coordinators representing each of the NSE geographic regions. Council members are elected for a three-year term. The Council met in October 2017 in Chicago, Illinois and during the conference in March 2018 in Myrtle Beach, with additional business conducted during monthly conference calls.

Throughout the year, Council reviewed the status of campus programs, 50th Anniversary planning, web priorities, future conference locations, and long-range budget projections. The Council conducted an evaluation of NSE President Debra Sanborn, approving her service and a three-year contract.

Leah Holmberg joined NSE Headquarters as Program Coordinator. Leah was the NSE coordinator for University of Nebraska Kearney from 1994-1997 and a higher education administrator in Minnesota.
