Vision A more just and sustainable world for all Values We respect diversity We are committed to justice and equality We work through education to achieve a more sustainable world Mission Statement To help create a more just and sustainable world Comments from the Chair It is with great pleasure that I present to you our Annual Report. The past year has been a successful one for DEED. For a second year, our main source of income has been the grant from the Department for International Development to carry out the ‘Rights Respecting Global Citizens’ project. This required DEED to meet exacting standards of monitoring and evaluation set by DfID and the staff involved are to be congratulated for achieving a very high degree of success in this regard. The year has seen DEED move into new premises at St Aldhelm’s Academy in Poole and we thank the Principal of the Academy, Cheryl Heron, for their generosity and support for DEED. Due to changing political and economic circumstances including the coalition government’s decision to end their Development Awareness Fund we need to change our funding base. Therefore, during this year the staff and trustees have been preparing to meet the great challenge of moving from being an organisation highly dependent on government grants to one that can maintain its current stafng and scale by selling its services to organisations concerned with global citizenship, cultural diversity , racial justice and equality and environmentally sustainable ways of living across Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset. I would like to thank staff , volunteers and fellow trustees for their huge contribution during this year Peter Barton, Chair of Directors Treasurer’s Report DEED has enjoyed a nancially secure and stable year , with income and expenditure ows as predicted. The organisation has generated a modest net inow of income at the nancial year end despite the continuing wider picture of funding cutbacks and nancial austerity . This has been achieved by a combination of sound nancial monitoring and management together with the ongoing dedication of the team to seeking out sources of income and support for DEED’ s work. As expected, core income generation was lower than in previous years due to wider cutbacks in education budgets. However DEED’ s income was secured through continued project funding and our grateful thanks goes to the Department for International Development (DfID) and Bournemouth Borough Council. A successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund has also contributed to secure our income. DEED is also grateful to the Co-operative Membership for their support of our work. The highest priority for DEED during the new nancial year will be to seek out new and innovative sources of funding for both project and core programmes to secure the long term sustainability of the organisation. A strategic plan is in place to support this priority . DEED would like to note our thanks to Steve Place at Bournemouth CVS in supporting our research and development towards more diverse sources of trading and project income. Annual Report 2011-2012Vision and Values

FairtradeThanks to funding from the Co-operative Membership DEED has carried out 2 projects promoting Fairtrade across Dorset.

Schools Stand Up for Fairtrade saw St Aldhelm’s Academy, Poole, Allenbourn Middle School, Wimborne and Canford Heath First School, Poole all having a free loan of the DEED Fairtrade display. They ran a variety of whole school community activities to make children, young people, teachers and parents more aware of why they should support Fairtrade. Schools ran a ’Big Brew,’ ‘Fairtrade Cafés’ and Wimborne Fairtrade Town Group hosted an evening with Harriet Lamb, CEO of the Fairtrade Foundation and many other activities reaching hundreds of local people.

Going for Gold raised awareness of the variety of fairtrade products including new Fairmined gold. A new display of infomation was created, together with a new pupil workshop where children simulated the work of South American gold miners to learn about the difference that fairtrade can bring to their lives. DEED ran these workshops with over 100 pupils from the Prince of Wales First School, Dorchester and Haymoor Middle School, Poole.

1944 - We Were Here: African American GIsin Dorset Thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, thisproject has started to researchthe stories of local people who are descended from the African American GIs stationed in Dorset in their thousands during the Second World War. DEED will again work with local poet, writer and researcher, Louisa Adjoa Parker. Projects partners Walford Mill Crafts and the Priest’s House Museum in Wimborne will help create an exhibition of their stories, those who witnessed the GIs arriving in Dorset, those who became their friends and local artists inspired by their stories.DEED looks forward to developing this innovative and creative partnership project ready to launch at Walford Mill in the summer of 2012.

The Global Kitchen ProjectThis family project about food and culture from the Middle East, saw DEED working with Afsaneh Pracha from Iran. Funding came from Bournemouth Borough Council and in total we worked with 175 children and parents in 7 workshops. Our fi nal workshops were at Christ the King Catholic Primary School. Food was discussed, prepared and tasted together. They talked about similarities and differences between Islam and other faiths.

What’s For Lunch, Yamini? Thanks again to Bournemouth Borough Council for funding for this project. Workshops on food, culture and creative cooking from around the world started in summer 2012.

Rights Respecting Global Citizens (RRGC) Embedding the Global Dimension in Rights-Respecting Schools in the South West.Rights Respecting Global Citizens is a 3 year project designed to successfully embed Global Citizenship within the whole school ethos, curriculum and governance of 40 Rights Respecting Schools in Dorset and the southwest building on the opportunities that Unicef’s Rights Respecting Schools Award offers in the region. The project delivers a comprehensive, innovative and challenging programme of whole school GC training, advice and resources to support local Head Teachers, Senior Leaders, teaching staff and pupils as young global evaluators to signifi cantly raise awareness of the Millennium Development Goals and poverty reduction within their whole school community. In the second year of the project we have worked with 12 new schools in 2 local authorities with a cumulative total of 27 schools over the 2 years. A total of 62 Headteachers/Senior Leaders, and 415 teaching staff have been trained and at least 1,629 children and families from RRGC schools have taken part in new GC activities such as Fairtrade FortnightAs a result of the course 92% of teaching staff have included GC in their curriculum plans and there has been a 100% increase in the number of schools borrowing global education resources. 122 pupils have been trained as Young Global Evaluators and 56% of these are actively involved in Global Citizenship activities to help reduce global poverty. DEED looks forward to completing this project in the third and fi nal year of funding and holding events to celebrate the innovative and exciting work in schools.

“Our curriculum has been enhanced through the introduction of Global citizenship – this has given children a greater understanding of their place in the world; a greater awareness of current issues in the world and how they can make a difference.” St Johns First School, Wimborne. Tony GardnerThis Annual Report is dedicated to Antony Gardner, DEED Director, Treasurer and Company Secretary who died in his sleep last October at the glorious age of 83. He will always be fondly remembered for his wit, wisdom, love of the Labour Party and red wine. We will miss him greatly. Tony spent his school days at Martin Kemp Welch School, which, quite a few years later, is now called St Aldhelm’s Academy. We hope he will be proud that DEED are now based there.

The Resource Centre and ExhibitionsIt has been another busy year for the DEED Resource Centre. Schools and Early Years settings have borrowed our country and themed collections 71 times over the last fi nancial year. Our resources have helped schools to enhance global arts weeks and bring classroom based topics alive. Our Fairtrade Displays were popular again during Fairtrade Fortnight in February 2012, being borrowed by schools in Poole, Dorchester, Wimborne and Yetminster.DEED’s India Collection was borrowed by St Luke’s Primary, Cranborne First, William Barnes Primary and St John’s First. The Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Display went to Avonbourne School for their Earth Charter Conference in July and 9 schools took part in the workshops and a fun quiz about all the displays. It was a slower year for bookings of our exhibitions - Dorset’s Hidden Histories Exhibition went to the Red House Museum Christchurch from October to November covering part of black history month. The Sankofa Exhibition went to Rushcombe First School in autumn term with an inset for the teachers and was used for support in all curriculum subjects.
