into molecular biology on the one hand and asort of surgical socioeconomics on the other. This new field is, in a sense, an academic dis-guise for humanism because it deals with thehuman service aspect of surgery and its appli-cation to people. Perhaps sociology and socio-economics, in their announced zeal to do' thebest for the most, seek to replace our ancienthumanism and our sense of Christian charitywith something more precise but scmehowless satisfying. Possibly we should follow ournegative intuition, avoiding it. Alternatively,it might be better to see what these new socialsciences have to offer. If they are going towork with surgery surgeons must become per-sonally involved to keep the sociologists hon-est and the legislators realistic.

But how can surgeons ever become involvedin such efforts? Surgeons are not economists.Critics might say that surgeons are economic-

ally privileged, but that does not make theminto economists! The study of economics isnot clinical surgery. As against this seemingbarrier we should reflect that immunologyand bacteriology were not clinical surgeryeither. Nor was antisepsis in its formativeyears. Transplantation now, as Lister's workof 100 years ago, demonstrated that ideasseemingly extrinsic to surgery could be ab-sorbed and brought to bear on surgical prob-lems if surgeons themselves were personallyinvolved. In some instances a partnershipbasis is the most effective involvement, work-ing with fellow-scientists from other fields.

Partnership of fields - the mating gameBoth in clinical and scientific work partner-ship between disciplines seems a viable solu-tion for the complexity of our modem world. This is true in the construction of hospitals, in

1939 as an Admiral, he faced tragedy and disasterwith couragc, determination, and Christian for-bearance. His wNork for the very church in which weare now assembled was dedicated; no man couldhave done more to promote the teaching of Our Lordand the welfare of the less fortunate in the environsof this church.

'In the sexventeenth century Sir Thomas Browne, physician at Norwich, wrote what he called his"dormitive". Cecil must have read this and ponderedover it as it was reproduced in an article written bya friencl of his and published in the British MedicalJournal of I965. Part of it runs thus:

"Sleepe is a death, 0 make me try,By sleeping what it is to die,And as gently lay my headUpon my grave as now my bed.How ere I rest, great God let meAwake again at last with Thee. And thus assur'd, behold I lie.Securely whether (to) wake or die. These are my drowsie dayes, in vaineNow I do wake to sleepe againe.0 come that houre, when I shall neverSleepe againe, but wake for ever".

'Cecil, dear friend, we thank you for your lifeand for your service to mankind'.
