    Test 7

    (Unit 7. Entertainment Programme)

Saving Private Ryan is a motion picture about a group of United States soldiers during WorldWar II (19391945). The soldiers are sent behind German lines to save Private James Francis Ryan(played by Matt Damon), whose three brothers have been killed in action in the same week.

The director of the film, Steven Spielberg, wanted certain relationships between the actors to makethe film more believable. So Spielberg sent the actors to the boot camp the training camp forsoldiers to prepare for the film. He wanted the actors to understand what being a soldier was like.

In Spielbergs film the eight soldiers cant see the point of their mission, and the actors reaction onsending them to the camp was the same. They all became very tired and wanted to leave. But as inthe film, they continued doing what they had to do, and it brought them closer together. Spielbergwanted these eight actors to feel a sense of unity, but he also wanted them to feel separate fromMatt Damon, because in the film they didnt like his hero. Thats why Spielberg didnt sent Matt

Damon to the camp together with the others. The other actors knew that while they were shakingand freezing in the camp, Matt Damon was staying in a comfortable hotel, and that meant that MattDamon felt separate from the others.

Spielbergs plan worked. He made an excellent film that won five Academy Awards.
