Bournemouth is one of the top holiday resorts in the UK and a major centre for students from abroad who wish to study English in the UK. Situated on the south coast 2 hours from London it is a vibrant place famous for its magnificent 10km sandy beach, mild climate, excellent shops, restaurants and pubs and exciting night life.

Bournemouth’s popularity with foreign students also stems from its reputation as a centre of academic excellence. As well as many language schools there is the University, which is rated as the UK’s number 1 new university, and many other colleges and schools offering a wide variety of academic and vocational programmes.

Another attraction of Bournemouth is its outstanding location and excellent communications with other parts of the UK. The main London airports of Heathrow and Gatwick are both within easy reach and major tourist destinations like London, Oxford and Bath can all be visited on day trips.

Some of the most beautiful countryside in the British Isles is very close to Bournemouth. The New Forest National Park, the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and the ancient and mysterious standing stones at Stonehenge are all within easy reach.

Location and facilities

LocationAnglo European has an ideal location. It is 15 minutes’ walk from the town centre and the beach and only 5 minutes’ walk from the main train and bus stations. The residential part of the town, where most homestays are, is close by as well. The school is on a main bus route and there is a stop right outside the front gate. You can buy a weekly bus pass at the school which allows you to travel on any Bournemouth bus.

FacilitiesThe school is in a large, traditional English house whichcontains the reception, 9 classrooms, a cafeteria, astudy room, a student computer room and officesand there is a patio outside. The classrooms arecomfortably furnished and well-equipped withmodern educational aids like videos and CD players.Five of them have interactive whiteboards whichallow all the resources of the Internet to be used inour classes. We also have 16 iPads for classroom use.

The cafeteria, where you can buy a hotlunch and drinks and snacks throughout the day, hasa large plasma screen HD TV which is used for regularfilm shows. There is also a karaoke machine, a Wiicomputer games console, a pool table and vendingmachines. The student computer room has 15 PCswhich students are free to use without charge whenthey like. There is also a Wifi facility which enablesstudents who have their own laptops to connect to theinternet anywhere in the building. On the patio there isseating and tables for 80 people and a table tennis table.In summer time barbecues are often held on the patio.

If I had to choose the thing I most like at the Anglo European School of English, I would choose the relationships with the teachers and social activities. Studying at Anglo EuropeanYour first dayOn your first day at Anglo European you will take a written and oral placement test. This takes approximately one hour and will enable us to measure your level of English and place you in a suitable class.

Accommodationand welfare

We understand that you will only get the most out of your language course if you have somewhere welcoming and comfortable to live. Most of our students stay in English homestays, an excellent opportunity to practise English outside the classroom.

HomestayWe take great care in selecting our homestays and they are regularly inspected. Our accommodation team look for clean and well-maintained houses and they also place great importance on the friendliness of the families.

We place students in homestays according to their needs and take into account if you have special requirements.

You can choose either a single room or twin room which you share with a student of another nationality. All rooms have storage for your clothes and a place for you to study. All students who stay in homestays have breakfast and dinner with the family and they are provided with lunch at the weekends.

Some homestays are within walking distance of the school while others may be a short bus ride away. No homestay is more than a 20 minute bus ride from the school.

ResidenceIn the summer time we also offer accommodation in Bournemouth University residences that are located 10 minutes’ walk from the school. All the residences are modern, well-equipped and comfortable and provide single-room accommodation all with ensuite bathrooms. Residential accommodation is offered on a self-catering basis. Students must be at least 18 years old in order to choose this option.

Shared apartmentsSome students choose to organise their own accommodation by renting an apartment or a room in an apartment. We can give advice on how this may be done.

Hotels and guest housesWe can arrange for students to stay in hotels or guest houses.

WelfareWe want you to feel comfortable and at home during your stay with us, so among our staff are people qualified to help with academic, social or personal problems. They are available for private consultation every day.

We have a 24-hour emergency telephone number, so there will always be someone close at hand.

Social and cultural programme

We believe that your language course should be complemented with an extensive social and cultural programme, which allows you to experience English culture and to meet and get to know other students.

In the summer there are daily activities and at other times of year there are usually 3 activities per week. These include film nights, conversation club and pub nights (including karaoke)

Other events include regular International food nights, Nintendo Wii championships and summer BBQs. We also have special events to celebrate Christmas, Guy Fawkes’ night (including fireworks),

Valentine’s Day and Easter. These activities are either free or have a minimal charge.

Of course, no study programme would be complete without visits to some of our historic and cultural treasures – including London, Bath, Oxford, and Stonehenge, as well as other places closer to Bournemouth such as the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site and The New Forest National Park.

If you come as part of a group, we can organize a special excursion and activity programme according to your requirements.

This is the second time that I’ve studied at the Anglo European School of English. I really love this school. Last year I met very friendly teachers and fantastic people from abroad. STARTER LEVEL (CEFR LEVEL A1) INTERMEDIATE LEVEL (CEFR LEVEL B1)

Designed for students who know little or no English, the emphasis is on oral English and reading of basic texts. Successful students will be able to conduct simple conversations and have a knowledge of simple English structures.

At this level, most everyday English conversation at normal speed can be understood, together with reading many texts without the help of a dictionary. Structures and vocabulary which depend on context will be used.

ELEMENTARY LEVEL (CEFR LEVEL A1/A2) UPPER INTERMEDIATE LEVEL (CEFR LEVEL B2)

Here the foundations of the language are expanded and many more everyday situations are introduced. Students will be able to ask simple questions, express their needs and understand basic texts.

More subtle distinctions in spoken and written English can be explored, and a sound command of English structure should be obtained. Everyday conversations and common accents will be understood without difficulty.

PRE-INTERMEDIATE LEVEL (CEFR LEVEL A2) ADVANCED LEVEL (CEFR LEVEL B2/C1)

Here we focus on understanding everyday spoken English at nor-mal speed, expressing ideas clearly and reading a variety of common texts. The main structures of the language will be generally used and understood.

Students learn to discriminate in matters of style, shades of expression and implied meanings. Fluency and accuracy to near-native standard is the objective, plus a wide and specialist vocabulary for a variety of contexts.

Your next stepStarting datesYou may start a General English course on any Monday except for the two-week Christmas and New Year period, when the school is closed. When a Monday is a public holiday, courses start on the following Tuesday.

How to EnrolComplete the enclosed form and return it to your agent or to Anglo European School of English with the £80 enrolment fee. We will then send your confirmation documents and your invoice. The total payment of your fees must be made 14 days before your course start date.

If you need a visa to enter the UK, you must pay all your fees before we can send your confirmation documents and visa letter. If your visa is refused we will refund all fees except the enrolment fee, when you send us the refusal of entry clearance form issued by your British Embassy or Consulate. We have considerable experience of arranging programmes for groups of students travelling together.These programmes can be customised to meet the particular needs of the group and can be organisedat any time of year. Group programmes can last for 1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks and may include the languagecourse, accommodation, airport transfers, excursions and activities.

We offer free places for group leaders on the basis of one place for a leader for each 15 students.

The minimum age for participants in group programmes is 14.

The language courseThe English Language course is a central part of the programme. It is designed to meet the particularneeds of the students and is taught by our team of qualified and experienced teachers. We use thelatest teaching materials included in the cost of the course. Students have the opportunity to benefitfrom modern teaching aids including interactive whiteboards and iPads.

AccommodationStudents are accommodated with carefully selected homestays. Students can be placed in twin or single rooms depending on the requirements of the group.

Meal planBreakfast and dinner from Monday to Friday are provided in the homestay and breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturdays and Sundays. On days when there is an excursion, packed lunches are provided.

From Monday to Friday hot lunches are served in the school cafeteria.

ExcursionsFull day excursions are organised to destinations such as London, Oxford, Bath and Brighton.Half-day excursions are organised to destinations such as Salisbury and Stonehenge, Winchester, Portsmouth, Swanage and The New Forest. All excursions are accompanied by a member of our staff.

Social and cultural activity programmeThe activity programme takes place in the afternoons and evenings. Activities in the school include: Filmnights, quiz nights, international food evenings, karaoke, games evenings and barbecues. Activities inthe town include: Sports, laser quest, discos, ice skating, bowling, boat trips and visits to local museumsand the Oceanarium.

CostsThe costs of group programmes vary depending on a number of factors including duration, type oflanguage programme, high or low season, group size, accommodation type, the number of excursionsand activities and the arrival and departure airport.

Our junior summer courses offer young learners aged8-18 the opportunity to improve their Englishlanguage skills whilst enjoying a varied and excitingactivity programme. The minimum period of study istwo weeks and the maximum is eight weeks.

The programme includes 20 lessons per week ininternational classes of up to 15 students. There are sixlevels of study available from Beginner to Advanced,and all students are carefully tested on the first dayto ensure they are placed in the right class for theirlevel. At the end of the course all students receive acertificate as a record of their English language studies.

The activity programme includes one full-day and onehalf day excursion per week plus an additional halfday excursion on Sundays for non-departing students.There is also a full programme of activities everyafternoon and evening.
