Terminology

mal'ak (Hebrew), angelos (Greek) : basic meaning ismessenger, both human and angels. Old Testament:

"holy ones" and "watchers"Collectively: "the council" or "the assembly""hosts" or "Lord of hosts"

New Testament:"heavenly host", "spirits""archangel" appears in Jude and 1 Tessalonians



Messengers

Their Origin, Nature and Status

They are created: 2 Praise him, all his angels,

praise him, all his heavenly hosts.5 Let them praise the name of the LORD,

for he commanded and they were created. (Ps 148) They don't act independently: 18

Praise be to the LORD God, the God of Israel,who alone does marvelous deeds. (Ps 72)



The Angels Protect and Rejoice overus.

7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him,and he delivers them. (Ps 34)

11 For he will command his angels concerning you

to guard you in all your ways; (Ps 91) 10In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presenceof the angels of God over one sinner who repents." (Luke 1)



Involved in the End Times

31"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angelswith him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32All thenations will be gathered before him, and he will separate thepeople one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep

from the goats. (Matt 25) 38The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sonsof the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, 39and

the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the endof the age, and the harvesters are angels. (Matt 13)



Guardian Angels

10"See that you do not look down on one of these little ones.For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face

of my Father in heaven. (Matt 18)

"Peter is at the door!"15"You're out of your mind," they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said,

"It must be his angel." (Acts 12)

Many angels in heaven assigned to children.

Jewish tradition that guardian angels resemble theirsubjects.

Origin of Demons

4For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sentthem to hell,[a] putting them into gloomy dungeons[b] to be heldfor judgment (2 Peter 2) 6

Chief of the Demons

diabolos (Greek) : devil, adversary, accuser. Other names in the NT:1. tempter (Matt 4:3)

Opposed to Jesus

like a man who sowed good seed in his field.25

But whileeveryone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weedsamong the wheat, and went away. 26When the wheat sproutedand formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

that God will grant them repentance leading them to aknowledge of the truth, 26and that they will come to theirsenses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has takenthem captive to do his will. (2 Tim 2)



Satan's work Cont.

14And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade asservants of righteousness. (2 Cor 11) 9

The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpentcalled the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray.He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. (Rev 12) 4The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, sothat they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (2 Cor 4)



Paul's Thoughts

7To keep me from becoming conceited because of thesesurpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn inmy flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. (2 Cor 12) 18

For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, againand again—but Satan stopped us. (1 Thess 2)



Ways to Fight Back!

7Submit yourselves, then,to God. Resist the devil,and he will flee from you.(James 4)

Do not let the sun go downwhile you are still angry,27and do not give the devil afoothold. (Eph 4:26)



What Can Demons Do?

Cause physical illness:1. Dumbness (Mark 9)2. Deafness3. blindess (Matt 12)

4. Convulsions (Mark 1)5. Paralysis or lameness (Acts 8) Oppose Spiritual Progress:12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but againstthe rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of thisdark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in theheavenly realms. (Eph 6)



Demon Possession

7With shrieks, evil[b] spirits came out of many, and manyparalytics and cripples were healed. 8So there was great joy inthat city. (Acts 8)

Manifestations:Unusual strength (Mark 5)May act unusually - wearing no clothes or living among thetombs (Luke 8)Self-destructive behavoir - cutting themselves, falling intofire/water (Matt 17, Mark 5)Demons speak through people - "We are Legion"

Not all Illness are Demon Related

'I will drive out demons and heal people today andtomorrow' (Luke 13)



Exorcism - How it's done

25"Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" 26The evilspirit shook the man violently and came out of him with ashriek. (Mark 1) 28

But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then thekingdom of God has come upon you. (Matt 12) Not just Jesus but also disciples: 1He called his twelve disciples to him and gave themauthority to drive out evil[a] spirits and to heal every diseaseand sickness. (Matt 10)

Why didn't it work?

19Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked,"Why couldn't we drive it out?"20He replied, "Because you have so little faith. (Matt 17) 28After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked himprivately, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"29He replied, "This kind can come out only by prayer." (Mark9)



What Can We Learn from all this?

1. Comforting to know that angel are there for us.2. Angels can be an example for us.3. Sobering that even angels can fall away.4. We should be aware of Satanic opposition.5. Satan is limited and will ultimately fail being cast

into the lake of fire.
