Amidst all the political convulsions that the ruling BJPgovernment is going through in Karnataka, the defeat ofits candidate in the by-election to Udupi-Chikmagalur LokSabha constituency is as much a setback to the party asits chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda. JayaprakashHegde of the Congress defeated V Sunil Kumar of the BJPby a handsome margin of 45,724 votes.

Considering that Sadananda Gowda had vacated theseat won by him in 2009 after becoming the chief minister,it was a matter of prestige for Gowda to get his partynominee elected.

The sprawling constituency which is spread over thecoastal and Malnad regions (earlier confined toChikmagalur) has been a B JP bastion in the last fourelections. Late Srikantappa had won it thrice and after therealignment of the constituency, Sadananda Gowda hadretained it last time. The BJP is now a divided house andthe election was over-shadowed by the ugly spectacle ofYeddy urappa and his supporters applying relentlesspressure on the BJP leadership to reinstate him as chiefminister.

Whether Yeddyurappa could have made a differenceto the election outcome is beside the point, but the factthat he defied the party’s request and stayed away fromcampaigning to demonstrate his pique at not being givena ‘suitable position,’ shows the level of helplessness theBJP has been pushed to by one man’s ego and powerhunger trip.

The people of Udupi-Chikmagalur, by backing theCongress nominee, have sent out a clear message thattheir tolerance limit of the B JP’s shenanigans in Karnataka,is breaching and they would no longer support the B JPblindly. Yeddyurappa’s biggest asset so far has been thathe is a prominent Lingayat leader and a vote-catcher,which is one main reason why the central leadership ofthe B JP has been reluctant to act against his rankindiscipline. People’s perception of political leaders keepsevolving and given the general disgust at the infighting inthe BJP, Yeddyurappa’s popularity also might have reacheda tipping point.

As far as the Congress is concerned, the Lok Sabha by-election result has come as a huge morale booster for theparty, which has been struggling to regain people’s faithever since losing the general elections in 2004. Udupi-Chikmagalur could well be a turning point for the Congress, but it will have to get out of its comatose state and becomemore pro-active than it has been in the last few years

A clear setback

New Delhi, March 22 : Healternates between candourand discreetness

“The impression that theCongress was trying to useme is wrong and baseless,”says Dinesh Trivedi, gesturing, “Honest to God,there was no move from theCongress.”

T he former RailwayMinister is responding to aquestion on speculationsurrounding the future ofthe Trinamool Congress —that after his throwing achallenge to the leadershipon the issue of raising railfares, it is steadily movingtowards breaking point.“ Nobody is interested inbreaking the party,” he toldThe Hindu in the course ofan interview, stressing, “Noindividual can break a party. At the end of the day, a partyis made or b roken by thepeople. It is the people’s willthat gets reflected …”

On a day when theRailway budget is b eingdiscussed in Parliament, Mr.Trivedi, who was RailwayMinister t ill Monday, casually dressed in a skyblue tracksuit, is lounging athis official residence, justoff the fashionab le KhanMarket. T he headyafterglow of the adulationthat followed his defiance ofhis party leader, MamataBanerjee, and the back-to-back TV interviews he gaveover the last week, stressingthat the interests of thecountry trumped those ofthe Trinamool, has faded. He is distracted, and onedge, as he watches T Vgrab s of scenes inParliament: “ Has the railb udget been passed?” hekeeps asking.

So was Ms. B anerj eeaware that he intendedraising passenger fares?

“I had mentioned it tosome senior bureaucrat andI have no reason to believeit was not conveyed to her,”he answers, adding, “ Thewhole world knew thatpassenger fares and freightrates were being hiked. Ihad also made public

I did what any Railway Ministershould have done, says Trivedi

pronouncements to thateffect .”

What did Ms. Banerjeegain by opposing the hikein passenger fares, especially as it was widelywelcomed?

This time, he is discreet:“You will have to ask her.”

On relations betweenthe Congress and theTrinamool, his answer issimilar: “I think MamataB anerj ee is in a b etterposition to answer that.”

As Cab inet Minister, had he ever felt that therewas a b etter way for theCongress and its allies todeal with each other? Theanswer is deadpan again:“I used to carry out whatmy leader wanted me tosay in the Cabinet. It wastotally on party lines.”

Given that the WestB engal Chief Ministercontrols her party with aniron hand, what possessedMr. Trivedi to adopt aheroic posture on thepassenger fares issue? “Idid what any RailwayMinister should have done:it was the natural, logical, professional thing to do. Itwas not heroic. WhateverI did was for the country, not for my party orregion,” he repeats whathe has said on the T Vchannels. And then headds, “I am yet to see anyperson complaining aboutthe fare hike.”

Mr. Trivedi thenexplains the rationale forthe fare rise. “I did what Idid based on the pattern oftravel so as to give reliefto the common man who,”he say s, “ b y and large, travels within his ownState, and rarely[undertakes] long distancetravel. As for the poorestof the poor, they nevertravel, not because of thefares but because theycan’t pay the otherexpenses.” To cater for thissection, he made suburbanrail travel cheaper: “Nowyou can travel 150 km at acost that earlier entit ledy ou to travel [only ] 10 0km,” he underscores.

By turns, Mr. Trivediveers between calib ratedcandour and occasionalcircumspection. Askedwhy the 1 1 -month-oldTrinamool governmenthas been in the headlinesfor all the wrong reasons,he deadpans: “Anywherein the country, if one doesnot deliver, the samepeople who carried you ontheir shoulders will dropy ou. Delivery is moreimportant than promisesonce y ou are in power.”And to a question whetherthe Centre is being unfairto West Bengal, refusing torescue it from the deb ttrap it is in until it showssome initiative, heanswers b riskly, “T hesame was the case with theRailways: I needed to raisefares and freight charges, otherwise where was themoney to come from? Noone helps you unless youhelp yourself: West Bengalneeds to find a solution toits own financialproblems.”

B ut to a questionwhether the consultationprocess on the three issues— sharing of river waterswith Bangladesh, F DI inretail and the NationalCounter Terrorism Centre— on which the Congressand the Trinamool differedwas faulty, the veil drops:“I should not comment onany leader ’s s ituation.”Persist and ask Mr. Trivedihow he thinks the Teestawaters issue should b edealt with: “Any problemcan be solved if it is notpersonalised. The Centralgovernment must take theinitiative and take theregion into confidence.”

His v iew on F DI inretail? “There is need fora broader consensus b ygetting the stakeholdersinvolved. Anything thatpro motes econo micgrowth and jobs withouttaking away employmentshould b e encouraged.”And NCTC? “ T his neednot b e po lit ici sed as itconcerns security: neitherside should make it aprestige issue.”

New Delhi, March 22: Thehike in rail passenger faresfor second class suburbanand non-suburban, Sleeper,AC Chair Car and AC 3-tierwas on Thursday rolled backwith the new RailwayMinister Mukul Roy dubbingit as a “huge drain” on thepocket of masses.

He, however, keptuntouched the increase of 15paise per km and 30 paise perkm respectively in passengerfares in AC 2-tier and AC-Iannounced by his predecessorDinesh Trivedi in the RailwayBudget only last week.Replying to the debate on

Mukul Roy partially rollsback passenger fares

the Railway Budget in the LokSabha, Roy also put on hold Mr.Trivedi’s proposal of setting upa committee to examinewhether there should be anindependent tariff regulatoryauthority.

He scrapped Mr. Trivedi’sproposal to expand theRailway Board.

Mr. Roy, who was replyingto the debate just a day aftertaking over as RailwayMinister, said, “The proposalto increase fare by 2 paise perkm, 3 paise per km and 5 paiseper km in second classsuburban and non-suburbanand Sleeper class is a hugedrain on the pocket of themasses.”

“Similarly, increase in thefare of AC Chair Car and AC3-tier, which is now patronisedby the middle class, is alsoquite severe.

“I intend to give relief to thealready over b urdenedcommon man by not effectingany increase in these classes.”

Paris, March 22: StavangerChild Welfare Service unsureof family’s unity

In what can only bedescribed as a volte face, theStavanger Child WelfareService on Wednesdaydecided it will not be handingover custody of theBhattacharya children to theuncle, after all. This issurprising. But not entirely.Stavanger CWS chiefGunnar Toresen had hintedat such an outcome when hetold this correspondent thatthe situation to himappeared “blurred.”

The Stavanger ChildWelfare service will thus notpursue the court hearing setfor March 23 (at least for themoment). The CWS is unsureof the family’s unity, especially after the recentfalling out between theBhattacharya spouses amidreports that he was seekinga divorce, which he hasvehemently denied. It isdifficult to understand why apublic quarrel between thespouses should so colour theCWS view given the fact thatit has known all along thatmartial discord was a stapleof their lives. In the CWSview, the family was toodisunited and the uncle nowno longer appeared to be theright custodian forAishwarya (1) and Abhigyan(3), it is reliably learnt.

The StavangerKommune was expected topublish a press release to theeffect and post it on itswebsite. However, as we goto press, no such pressrelease spelling out itsobjections to proceed with theMarch 23 hearings has yetappeared. It is reliably learntthat the CWS’ lawyer hadreservations ab outpresenting the case in courtbecause she felt it was stillnot watertight. A negativedecision by the court onMarch 23 would have madematters far worse.

“The parents now saythey are united, but childwelfare services do not trustit. Which is why they nolonger wish to go in for thissolution. The uncle willprobably have to leave for

Back to square one, Norway tokeep back Indian kids

home without the children,”the Bhattacharyas’ lawyerSvein Kjetil Lode Svendsentold TV2. He did not pick upcalls from T he Hindupresumably because he wasarguing another case in court.

This news can beinterpreted in two ways: thepositive interpretation wouldbe that the CWS would likemore time to better preparethe case; that its ultimateobj ective is to hand overcustody to the uncle and thatit is seeking more time. TheCWS will surely need betterand stronger guaranteesfrom the families to the effectthat there will be nointerference in the children’sfuture lives either by themother or the maternalgrandparents. And that thechildren especially, will neverbe witness to family violencein any form.

According to sourcesclose to the case, there hasbeen too much hesitation, toomuch back and forth, includingby the uncle especially afterthe quarrel this brother hadwith the children’s motherSagarika who is consideredunstable and unpredictableand capable of verbal andphysical violence.

The negative reading ofthis decision would be that theCWS now no longer has anyintention of returning thechildren and will not seek afresh court date in the nearfuture. It will then not presentthe compromise worked outwith the uncle but fight the casetooth and nail in the StavangerDistrict Court next June.

This decision isparticularly regrettable sinceall the parties had finallyagreed on the transfer ofcustody document. A clause inthat document states that theparents will not attempt to takeback custody before any court, institution or organisation inIndia or elsewhere. The unclewho was wary of the SagarikaChakraborty family and whatit would do to get the childrenback was fully on board. It wasjust at this crucial point thatthe CWS, especially becauseof the misgivings of its lawyer, developed cold feet andreneged on its commitment.

But, now a new study claims that it is safe for mostwomen to get pregnant even within the first two yearsafter diagnosis. Furthermore, the study revealed thatpatients who become pregnant appear to survive longerthan those who don’t, although independent experts claimedthat further research is needed in this area, the ‘DailyMail’ newspaper reported.

In their study, the researchers, led by Dr Hatem Azim,a medical oncologist at Jules Bordet Institute in Brussels, and colleagues, enrolled 333 women, with an average ageof 34, but ranging from 21 to 48 years old, whose oestrogenreceptor status (positive or negative) and disease outcomewere known.

They had become pregnant at any time followingdiagnosis and were in remission at the time theyconceived.

The group was matched with 874 similar breast cancerpatients who didn’t become pregnant and who acted ascontrols. Over a period of almost five years followingpregnancy, 30 per cent of all women in the study saw theirdisease come back.

Dr Azim said: “Out of all the women, 57% had ER+disease, but the study showed there was no difference inthe length of time women with either ER+ or ER negative(ER-) disease survived without their disease recurringcompared with those who did not become pregnant”.

Neither breastfeeding nor abortion or miscarriageappeared to have an effect on the women’s outcome.

Dr Azim added: “Frequently when women with historyof breast cancer become pregnant, some physiciansadvise them to have an abortion for fear that completingthe pregnancy could have a detrimental effect on theoutcome of their disease. We found that this was not trueand the outcome was similar, irrespective of whether thepregnancy was completed or not.”

“First I feel I need to calmmyself down. I am the only playerfrom India and people expect alot. I have to relax myself, play allthe strokes freely. Only then Ithink I can improve my fitness andtechnique,” Saina told PTI afterreturning home following herSwiss Open triumph in Basel.

“...if I just focus on training andtake a lot of pressure, then I thinknothing will work out well,” sheexplained. Saina said her mentorand national coach PullelaGopichand has helped herimmensely in coping with thepressure of expectations.

“I was under pressurebecause I was not winningtournaments. I also had an ankleinjury. Finally, Gopi Sir told me thatI have been taking too muchpressure and have not b eenenjoying my game,” she recalled.“He felt that I am not really

I need to calm myself down: Sainamoving well and I feel stiff on thecourt. He told me ‘just relax andenjoy yourself and play. I willcorrect your mistakes and don’tworry about that.’ So, I think all ofthat worked very well this time,”she said.

Saina said the victory in SwissOpen was important as it helpedher regain her confidence.

“It is very important becauseOlympics are coming. I neededone big break. It came at the righttime. Of course, it took some timebut I needed to get back my focusand confidence. I improved all ofthat. So, I am really happy,” Sainasaid. Asked how difficult it wasagainst the Chinese players, shesaid though it was tough sheovercame the challenge with acalm mind. “It is always difficultwith the Chinese, I think, for allthe players. This time I felt it wasvery easy. I b eat themcomfortably. It was because Iwent and played with a calmmind,” she said.

Saina admitted that winning amedal in Olympics would not beeasy but she is determined to doas well as she can. “I really wantto win a medal. But it is not easy

B anga lo r e, Ma rch 22 :Mohammad Radz iRodzhaninz am’s late winnerdelivered Karnataka L ions adramatic 3-2 victory over PuneStrykers to finally lift it out of theb ottom of the World SeriesHockey table.

With the clock ticking downon a game that had lost much ofits early frenzy, the Malaysianforward deflected a long ball outof defence three minutes fromtime to hand Lions a desperatelyneeded win at the KSHA Stadiumhere on Wednesday.

Crucial win: “It’s always greatwhen you win like that,” captainArjun Halappa said afterwards.“But to be honest, we could havescored two or three goals in thefinal quarter. We were practically

Dramatic win for Lionscamped in their half. This resultwas crucial; from being the lastteam we have moved up tosixth.”

Ravipal Singh had put thehome side ahead early in afrenetic first quarter, driving intospace b efore unleashing athunderous shot from the top ofthe circle.

Lions, despite not lookingparticularly fluent, managed tograb even a second whenveteran Len Aiyappa converteda penalty corner on 11 minutes.T he defence, however, hadnever been watertight; it did nottake long for the cracks to showup. Pune’s Nikkin Thimmaiah wasleft unattended near the far post, and when B irendra Lakracentred from the right, all he had

to do was tap the ball in. The visitorsoon drew level, B ikash Topposlotting home a penalty corner inthe second quarter.

Fine save: The game sloweddown thereafter but L ions’goalkeeper Devesh Chauhan stillhad a great deal of work to do. The31-year-old, later rightly declaredMan-of-the-match, kept his side inthe contest with a string of finesaves.

At the other end, Lions had twogilded chances to move ahead butspurned both. As the game nearedthe end, a draw looked the mostlikely outcome; Radzi, however, had other ideas.

The result: Karnataka Lions 3(Ravipal Singh, Len Aiyappa, Md.Radzi) bt Pune Strykers 2 (NikkinThimmaiah, Bikash Toppo).
