an intimate formula

"The Bulletin" recently published an art i cle which began: " All you need to put on an intimate revue is an intimate cast, an int ima te pianist, a stage and one or two Amer1can records of Hermione Gingold that nobody's ever heard" This, of course, is perfectly true- although we would disagree with the phrase "A ll you need." None of these things are easy to get hold of (especial ly Miss Gingold's records) but, one vvay or another, we managed to obtain most of them. The intimate cast comes ma inly from the most recent University Revue, the intimate pianist comes, by way of Bach, Beethoven and Sibelius, from the University Bookshop (as intimate a book­shop as you are likely to find) and the stage comes by courtesy of the University Union which sponsors the show.

Miss Gingold makes an appearance here and there, along with many other overseas writers, and, unabashed by the company he Oi ' she shares, a local writer or two manages to intrude also.

We have subtitled '8 + 2' "a new intimate revue" because, in many respects, it is just that . It follows the latest trend in revue . .. a basic set and costumes (brilliantly designed by Tony Tripp) and satire with a sharper edge .

The on ly other thing our formula needs is an audience, and, as you've paid a shill ing for this programme, we presume you are with us for the evening. So let's begin by being intimate .. .
