Design is to break the rules, and to try something new.

The excitement of creativity often comes from

the unknown and unexpected result through experiments.

I am glad to get the chance to explore more technique

of designing textile in this semester.

Although in average I can only execute a kind of technique in one lesson,

the knowledge I gained is permanent:

Textile Design Techniques1. Fulling2. Burn out3. Metallic fabric design4. Laser treatment5. Transfer printingAssessment Project A wearable Design

    1. FullingA Process that increases the thickness and compactness of woven or knitted WOOL by

subjecting it to moisture, heat, friction, and pressure until shrinkage is achieved.

Team work: A cape with geometric pattern

    2. Burn outApplying printing paste containing disperse dyestuff for dyeing cellulose fiber (e.g. cotton),

resulting in a burn-out pattern on the textile after heat-treating.

    Second trial:

    70 cm x 70 cm

Burn-outDisperse dyestuff is brushed through a stencil with kaleidoscope-like pattern. After

heat-treatment, the textile is rubbed to remove the burn-out material. The textile is thendyed with yellow and in gradient change into red, creating a style of southern-east leisure

    mood.

    3. Metallic fabric designMetallic outUsing strings, ropes and elastic band, the original metallic fabric is folded and tied

together with some wood chopsticks and blocks. It is then put into hot alkaline for 5 8 minutes to remove the metallic surface. After rinsing, the metallic fabric is dipped and

boiled in different colours of dye to achieve the resulting color. Those areas that is tightlytied is covered fromalkaline soup andtherefore not beingcoloured in the laterstage. Here using differentfolding methods

combining with variousshape of blocks, andthen dipping the fabricin dyestuff in differentangles createsinteresting effect onthe fabric.

    4. Laser EngraveTwo different pictures for desired graphic is prepared before using laser treatment, one

for applying on chiffon and one for denim. There are a few key points to note whileapplying laser treatment:

    i. As chiffon is thin and sheer, laser beam can easily cut through it, thus it is hardto create a gradient of cutting depth.

ii. The picture prepare for laser cutting chiffon should be in black and white only andlines are separated into dots for a continuous line effect.,

iii. Grey gradient is applicable in applying laser treatment on denim since it is thicker.Shades can be created.

iv. The resulting color of print depends on the nature of materials. For example, denimcontaining fibres that becomes char easily may result in a yellowish print.

    5. Transfer printingPigment in form of coloring pastes/water color is brushed onto a piece of newspaper. After dried, the newspaper which contains the color is put onto the fabric and togetherheat pressed in 200C for 30 seconds. Otherwise, a digital diagram is printed on transfer

paper. Some variations of designs come from the placement of transfer printing sheet. It may be cut or tear randomly, or used repeatedly to generate a blurred effect.
