Upon grad-uation, he earned his captain’s license and began running commercial boats.

annual pilgrimages from Key West, up the eastern seaboard andthrough the Canadian maritimes. Occasionally, Wolf was askedto deliver commercial vessels for the company. One memorablethree-month trip involved picking up a converted deep-water shrimpboat in Juneau, Alaska, traveling down the west coast, throughthe Panama Canal, then up the east coast to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In order to upgrade his license, Wolf eventually took a jobat New York Harbor working for Gateway Towing. At New York,Wolf expanded his skills in the marine industry, working every posi-tion from deckhand to loadmaster to engineer, delivering dry cargobarges as far south as West Palm Beach. Through the process,he earned his 500-ton captain’s license.

With license in hand, Wolf’s goal was to move back to Florida. He relocated to Palm Beach Gardens and took a job on a 105-foot CVI Navi motoryacht. He also worked for a summer captainingan 85’ Burger for basketball great Scotty Pippins. Then BuzzWatkins, the president of Watkins Motor Lines called with an offerto maintain his fleet of boats and run his private vessel, a 75’Fleming motoryacht. Wolf’s first experience with ACY was that ofa captain overseeing the service of Watkins’ vessels. When Billand his wife Lori settled down in Hobe Sound and began plan-

ning a family, they decided it would be best for him to find a land-based job with regular hours. He took a position with TropicalShipping at the Port of Palm Beach as a gantry crane operator, while still delivering boats on the side.

During one of his deliveries, Wolf learned that a position wasavailable in the service department at ACY, so he stopped by totalk to ACY President Dominick LaCombe. The timing was per-fect. Wolf had the credentials ACY was looking for, and the ACYyard was overflowing with storage vessels from Tropical StormErnesto. Wolf signed on immediately and began launching boats. As one of two service managers, Wolf is responsible for manag-ing vessel storage, as well as the service of vessels under 50 feet.

“ACY is a unique boat yard because we are the only facilityin the area that can offer a complete array of marine services whilevessels are being stored,”said Wolf. “When customers come infor storage, they usually have some type of service work that needsto be performed, whether it’s a bottom job, mechanical mainte-nance or an electronics upgrade. It’s our goal to give each ves-sel the individual attention it deserves and treat our customers likefamily so they keep coming back.”

ACY Celebrates the “Hullidays”On December 20th, ACY spread plenty of “hulliday” cheer, converting a service bay into a winter wonderland and treating employees and their families to a delicious lunch buffet catered by Carrabbas Italian Grill.

Ask the Yacht Doctors©

Q: How often should I inspect the insulation on my cool water andA/C lines?

YD: If you have a boat built in the 1990s or later, you will have insu-lation made of Rubitex® on your coolant and refrigeration lines. It iswise to inspect the insulation at least every five years. Upon inspec-tion, you may find that the insulation has broken down over time, caus-ing condensation. As condensation accumulates on the lines, itcontributes to further breakdown of the insulation and the presenceof mold. There are now many new and improved products on the mar-ket to solve this problem. Consult the Yacht Docs at ACY for the bestproduct to update the insulation on your vessel.

This feature answers commonly asked questions posed to ACYregarding boat construction, maintenance and repair. Please fax yourquestion to 772-288-4993, or e-mail it to [email protected], in care ofthe “Yacht Doctors©.” If your question is selected, we’ll send you anACY T-shirt.
