“If the key to effective classroom management is consistency, I guess I’m
an effective classroom manager. I am consistently exhausted at the end of
the day.”

HOW CAN I DO ALL OF THIS AND
TEACH REQUIRED SKILLS?
4
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
• Contact General Education Teachers to inquire transition skills taught within their curriculum (i.e., sample resumes, financial planning, mock interviews, cooking, job shadowing, vo-tech, shop, computer skills, etc.)• Engage other service providers.• Involve young adults and parents.• Work closely with your Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors.

WHAT CAN TEACHERS DO?
•Curriculum should be aligned with postsecondary goals to show connections between what is being taught at school and the postsecondary goal of the student. This will promote an interest in learning causing the student and family to value education (Hardre & Reeve, 2003).

WRITING PROMPTS
• Write an essay describing your future goals. Include where you would like to work, learn, and live after high school and what you will do this year to accomplish your goals. • There is a common proverb that states, “The
unexpected always happens.” • Write about a situation or an event that did not turn out
the way you expected. If you could have foreseen what was going to happen, would you have changed anything about your actions? Be sure to include an introduction, a body, and a conclusion in your writing.

WRITING PROMPTS
•When applying for a job, you’ll often have to send a cover letter that explains your strengths and qualifications. Writing these cover letters can be difficult; you have to sound confident and not conceited. • Write a three paragraph cover letter to
someone you’d like to work for. Summarize your experience and explain why you’re perfect for the job.

WRING PROMPTS
• Your high school has received a large donation from the estate of a former citizen in your area. The money is to be used toward something that will improve student life for the students at your school. Some people have suggested a new library, while others have suggested a new computer lab or student fitness center. • Which of the ideas would you support for your school? Is
there a different idea you would suggest? Write a persuasive paper to convince your school board that your proposal is the best way to spend the money-and why.
