RESEARCH FORUM

ALZHEIMER’S

ABOUT THE FORUMOver 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. 1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death.

Alzheimer’s disease is fast becoming a major public health crisis, and research is the key to resolving this issue. This forum will provide attendees with an overview of the current state of Alzheimer’s research, from biomedical research to psychosocial approaches to care.

The day will start with an overview of two global research initiatives, the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer’s Network (DIAN) and the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). The program will then move to presentations on local Alzheimer research initiatives given by researchers from Illinois State University, Southern Illinois University, and the University of Illinois.

Participants will learn about a number of programs, initiatives and tools designed to both promote patient access to clinical studies and to assist medical professionals in providing care to dementia patients and their families.

WHO SHOULD ATTENDThis program is designed for clinicians, researchers, and other professionals in health care, wellness and aging; interested others are also welcome to attend. Continuing education credit is available for physicians (AMA PRA Category 1 credits™), nurses, social workers, counselors and nursing home administrators.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVESBy the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

• Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of encouraging patient participation in clinical studies.

• Identify the benefits of involvement in programs such as SIU’s Memory and Aging Network, both to the clinical practice and to the patient/family.
