ALVIS BOARD OF TRUSTEES 2018-2019

Chair and President’s MessageDear Friends and Colleagues,

Last year was one of the most difficult years Alvis has ever had in its more than 50 years of service to the community. It gave us the opportunity to use every challenge as the impetus to make changes in processes, procedures, and personnel in order to position Alvis for a more successful future.

There was also much to celebrate in 2018. Our highlights included:

• Hiring a medical director, launching a medical model for integrated behavioral healthcare treatment, and expanding our Recovery Choices behavioral healthcare program to Chillicothe, Lima and Toledo.

• Benefitting from corporate and organization volunteerism from groups representing The Ohio State University, Columbus Young Professionals, Grange, Nationwide, Zonta Club, Worthington Industries, Women’s Transition Network, Liberty Baptist Church, treetree Ad Agency, M/I Homes and State Auto.

• Transitioning and enhancing Alvis IT systems, including migrating to a new network and phone system; transitioning to new financial software, and integrating multiple software systems to provide comprehensive, efficient, integrated healthcare to Alvis clients.

Both the challenges and the highlights of 2018 serve to remind us that there’s no such thing as “business as usual” and there’s no stopping Alvis when it comes to turning lives around. We remain steadfast in our commitment to the vulnerable populations who come to Alvis to create stronger futures for themselves and their families that benefit all communities.

Alvis cannot turn lives around alone. Thank you to all who have invested their time, talent and/or treasure to support the work of Alvis in 2018. We are especially grateful for the contributions of the Board of Trustees, staff, donors, service partners, volunteers and interns.

Denise M. Robinson Keith Stevens President and CEO Chair, Board of Trustees

Serving Individuals with Developmental Disabilities Alvis clients have unique and significant behavioral challenges in addition to developmental disabilities (DD). Before coming to Alvis, many of our clients had experienced rejection and failure as other providers and even some of their family members gave up on them.

At Alvis, we are proud of our ability to work with these individuals to address and overcome some of their very most challenging behaviors. Last year, Alvis successfully piloted a substance abuse treatment curriculum specifically designed for this population. Our clients learn to make good choices because our staff teach, assist and encourage every step of the way. Our staff care deeply about our clients and more than 40% have been here for more than three years.

The results? Active and engaged clients who participate in a wide range of community activities, including a Harmony Project Choir, classes at Columbus State Community College, Special Olympics, Hiking Clubs, and more. They also contributed more than 700 hours of community service for the benefit of others.

We don’t just provide services to individuals. We create a family, a community, and a life.

Workforce Development

There are many barriers to employment for individuals with past justice involvement. They include a lack of job experience, gaps in their employment history, and low education and/or skills. Often, the biggest barriers they face are a lack of self-confidence and employers who won’t even consider hiring someone with justice involvement.

Alvis helps our clients move beyond all those roadblocks. We provide job readiness training and help clients to define their transferrable skillsets. Mock interviews help to instill confidence and skills training is available through programs like Career Pathways. Clients who lack a work history can begin to build their employment record in our Social Enterprise programs.

Most importantly, we work with employers to help them recognize that hiring an individual with justice involvement is good for the community and good for business. For employers, it opens up a whole new pool of labor and working with Alvis helps to reduce their cost of recruiting and hiring.

The result? Individuals who are working and supporting their families and employers who now have great workers. This creates a stronger community for all.

roots and a commitment to providing second chances.

Community Engagement and Volunteers

One of the many ways that Alvis strengthens individuals, families and communities is by building up relationships through service. Community engagement and volunteerism flow both to and from the agency. Last year, Alvis clients completed more than 21,000 hours of community service. At the same time, more than 470 volunteers and interns contributed more than 10,000 hours of their time to Alvis.

Individuals and organizations who volunteer at Alvis are demonstrating that they value our clients. They are positive role models and provide encouragement as our clients work to turn their lives around.

Alvis clients who volunteer gain self-confidence, connections and respect as they work to improve their communities. Doing something good for others provides a natural sense of accomplishment. The better our clients feel about themselves, the more likely they are to stay on a positive track in their lives and to continue to work toward their future goals.

After all, our vision is that communities believe a person’s potential is more important than their past. Community engagement and volunteerism provide natural opportunities to work toward a mutual goal of creating a better future for all.

Reentry Services

Individuals who are returning to the community from the justice system face countless barriers, from finding a place to live to finding a way to reconnect with their families. It can become overwhelming and put individuals at risk of failing. In response, Alvis provides residential and community reentry services designed to help each individual make a successful transition to the community.

Alvis assesses the risks and needs of every individual and delivers evidence-based programming that specifically addresses each client’s treatment needs.

Alvis’ residential services include diversion programs, such as Work Release, as well as programs that are a “step down” between prison and the community. Individuals live in a safe, supportive environment at Alvis while participating in programming. Nonresidential programs include individual and group counseling and treatment, workforce development, facilitated peer-helping groups, and transitional education, a reentry skills program provided via videoconferencing to individuals nearing release from prison.

More than 95% of all individuals who enter prison will return to the community. At Alvis, we provide the tools to turn their lives around. The bottom line? It works. Three years after completing an Alvis residential reentry program, 79% of our clients were successful in staying out of the criminal justice system, compared to the national success rate of about 50%.

Alvis reentry services contribute to a safer, thriving community for all.

Services to Turn Children’s Lives Around

Alvis is a leader in providing family-focused programming designed to break the cycle of intergenerational justice involvement and addiction. Our family programs provide children with an environment that demonstrates love, compassion, trust, and understanding to help each child reach their best potential.

When a parent becomes involved in the justice system and/or suffers from addiction and mental health disorders, the crucial relationship between parent and child is deeply threatened and sometimes even broken. The trauma caused from family destabilization, financial hardship, and feelings of shame, confusion and anger greatly increases the risk that the child will face a range of negative consequences. The child becomes more likely to do poorly in school, develop mental health issues, use drugs and alcohol, and may become involved in gangs and other illegal activities.

At Alvis, we work to heal these families. We are committed to reuniting families and restoring trust and communication for families affected by addiction and justice involvement.

Our family-centered programs promote meaningful family dialogue, increase parental knowledge, and facilitate parental involvement in the development and education of their children. Families get stronger through educational classes and hands-on practice to improve parenting skills, enhance coping abilities and build healthier relationships. Children are able to participate in counseling and treatment services that provide a foundation to build healthy futures.

The result? Stronger families mean stronger, healthier and safer communities for all.

Alvis’ Family and Children’s Program is funded through the proceeds from Evening of Light, a

spectacular event held every spring. Here, Brittany and her sons share their family reunification success

story with guests at Evening of Light 2018.

Summer Quest is a nationally acclaimed day camp program for children of mothers in treatment at the Amethyst program. Children won’t face the shame

and isolation they may have encountered in a traditional summer camp because they all

share the experience of being personally impacted by addiction.

Integrated Behavioral Healthcare Services

Overall, drug overdose deaths in Ohio decreased by about 20% last year but at the same time, the number of people in the state who died from unintentional overdoses involving methamphetamine or other psychostimulants increased. It’s a reminder that addiction cannot be treated one substance at a time, nor can substance use disorder be treated without addressing co-occurring mental health issues.

That’s why Alvis provides Integrated Behavioral Healthcare Services and it was the agency’s largest area of growth last year. Today, Alvis is able to provide psychiatric services to all clients, including full mental health assessments and prescribing psychotropic medications for those diagnosed with a mental health condition. Medication Assisted Treatment is available on-site at all behavioral health treatment locations. Alvis’ behavioral healthcare programs, Amethyst and Recovery Choices, are helping thousands of clients to turn their lives around.

The Amethyst program provides gender-specific treatment and recovery services for women. Eighty-nine percent of Amethyst clients have been dually diagnosed with mental health and substance use disorders. Amethyst’s integrated, family-centered environment gives women and their children the opportunity to grow and heal together. Amethyst is one of the only programs in the nation in which children up to age 18 can live with their mothers while the mother is in treatment. Recovery Choices is a comprehensive, behavioral healthcare treatment program that offers holistic, outpatient and intensive outpatient treatment services for men and women. It specializes in behavioral healthcare services for individuals with justice involvement. Seventy-two percent of Recovery Choices clients have been diagnosed with more than one substance use disorder. Treatment, recovery and wrap around services that also address criminogenic needs are designed to support holistic, long-term recovery.

overcoming involvement in human trafficking.

Diverse funding streams, quality service partners, professional

affiliations and accreditations are at the heart of our success. We

work together to help our clients reach their full potential and to

create stronger families and more vibrant communities.
