Stamp Ministry

Hello ALSI Friends,
It is December and the holiday season is upon us. A glass of egg nog or a cup
of hot apple cider sounds great for a cold morning pick-me-up. With the rain
and snow in our local mountains, it puts us into the Christmas holiday spirit.
An evening with the warmth of a fireplace going does get me ready to play
Christmas music. We are share holiday music like The Little Drummer Boy,
Sleigh Ride, Ave Maria, Silent Night, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, and Feliz
Navidad, which are some of our favorites to play and sing along.
ALSI continues to bring accordionists together for the enjoyment of playing
the instrument. This December ALSI meeting, Dec. 15th, join us for a very
special afternoon of music and merriment. Yes, our meeting is the third Sun-
day. We will meet in the smaller cozy room 100, which we have done before.
The club will provide hot apple cider and some decorated cookies. Please
bring your favorite Christmas delight (fruit cake?) to share.
Are you ready for a New Year to begin? If you are like me, 2019 slipped by very quickly with many music
events we enjoyed along the way. This keeps life interesting, challenging and very eventful. We can slow
down for the holiday and enjoy time with friends and family.
I hope that you will share your love of music with those you visit. For me, my music is fun, especially at
Christmas season, more special and memorable. The smile on the children’s faces when I play Frosty, Ru-
dolph or Jingle Bells is worth all the practice one does.
Good wishes to all of you under the weather, hopefully very soon you will be back to 100 percent. Try a
cup of hot chocolate, it may help. Thank you to everyone for helping the ALSI friends keep our club going.
Now the get you in the mood for Christmas, come the December meeting and enjoy our special showcase
concert with an outstanding accordionist and teacher from Canada, Beverely Fess.

January 5th. Workshop with Gordon Kohl
SUNDAY 1:30 - 5:30 p.m. Chula Vista location
We will practice three solos. 1. Amelie 2. Tonight We Love 3. A Gypsy Rose (a new
original solo of mine in musette style). We will work on accordion expression, bellow-
ing, reed choices, meter, and time principals in each solo.
I am looking forward to having this study class. We will play acoustic accordions at this
class. Digital players are welcome to use accordion reed voicings.
The cost will be $24.00 I will send out music study sheets upon class reservation.

ALSI Happiness by Sharon Marotte
November 10, 2019 – Happy Birthday to the
Marines!!! Also we celebrated our annual
Heritage Day…our country flags were
draped over the chairs on stage and small
flags in clay pots decorated the tables in the dining hall.
Some folks dressed up in some neat costumes – all in all it
was a great day.
We had some very special guests attend: Brian and Esther Bolling from Manhattan Beach
plus Ilmar and Susan Kuljus from Washington. A guest player from Houston, TX was Me-
gumi (Meg) Hada. Jane Ford was also in attendance….good to see her again. Special Thanks to Lois Lahoud for putting together the picture board in honor of Kari An-
drews, who recently passed away. Jack Marotte ran the sound board/mikes and Bob Warn-
er was our MC. We also enjoyed some piano music by Lois Lahoud. Great job of playing
Lois.
Players for the day: -Ron Griffin started the day with Amore Scusami, Boogie Woogie, Kristiana Waltz,
Lordaguasen, Over the Rainbow. Thanks Ron - all from memory.
-Tommy Campbell played Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and Skip to my Lou. -Carlos Meneses played Have I Told you Lately That I Love You and Diana. We see im-
provement, Carlos… -Tom Eskola played several waltzs: Laila Vals, Second Waltz, Indifference, Godfather
Waltz, La Partida, Come Back to Sorrento. Good playing, Tom. -Brian Bolling, our guest from Manhattan Beach played a song written by Ilmar
Kuljus: Variations of a Theme. So good to have Brian with us!!! -Larry Kaiser & Sharon Marotte played a French duet, Darling Je Vous Beaucoup,
Polish Polka – Krakoujak, and Springtime in Sweden. I think we did a good job! -Megumi (Meg) Hada was in San Diego on business from Houston, TX. Her songs
were: Gentilezza by Mario Tacca, Ballad of Faith by Guy Klucevsek, Adios Nonino by Astor Pi-
azzola and Meg Tango by Stas Venglevski. Hard pieces, but well done. -Loren Gardner played Ticklish Polka, Tickling the Accordion and Dancer Polka. We
can always count on Loren to play, good job!!!
Break: Gordon Kohl greeted everyone and passed out Musical Achievement
Award certificates to all the players for lifetime dedication to the Accordion.
Thanks to Ted Hill, Al Piselli and Lois Lahoud for setting up the goodies –
Gordon Kohl furnished sub sandwiches plus the cookies, etc from others.

-Ted Hill played Happy Boys Schottische, April in Portugal and Waltz Caprice. Nice to
see/hear Ted play – hope he plays again, soon. -Jerry Odling songs were: Halsa Dem darHema –Greet those at Home, Grans Valsen
by Karl Jularbo and Amerikansk Jularbo by Walter Erikson. Kari would have loved your
songs… -Vicki Eriqat played her songs and sang along: Born to Lose, Daisy/Elmer and Crying
Over You. Good job, Vicki! -Gordon Kohl played several pieces: some French pieces, Volare, Godfather songs and
For the Good Times in memory of Richard Smith and John Cessinger. -ALSI Ensemble was the last group to play: Lokkeran Waltz in memory of Kari An-
drews, Ain’t She Sweet, Marijana, Sam, the Old Accordion Man, When the Red, Red Robin-
For Me and My Gal plus Get Me To The Church on Time. Vicki Eriqat was our director,
Lois Lahoud played percussion instruments. It was a long day with lots of accordion players (12). We were excited to welcome our
visitors from afar. We hope to see you all in December, the third Sunday, as we welcome
Beverley Fess as our guest artist from Canada. Have a great month and see you soon, we
hope!!!

Our ALSI club board meets in a steering committee meeting the Wednesday following each
ALSI club meeting to plan and organize future meetings and events. The meeting is open to
anyone who wishes to join the conversation.
For the coming year 2019, the board members have agreed to continue on in their positions.
It was felt that an election would not be necessary at this time, as it is hard to find volunteers
to fill these positions. We are still in need of a vice-president.
If you wish to join and help the club by being on the board you are encouraged to do so and
apply for any of the above positions or create a new one for yourself. Just let Lois or any
board member know what you would like to do.
Duties for the vice president are to help plan for events and activities for the club. You would
aid in research and communication as needed to get thing done. These are essentially the
same duties as the president.
Election of ALSI board members
The son of one of our founders, Helen Estok Schoell, has passed away. John Mauser, (April 1961-October 2019) died in El Cajon, CA. He
owned and operated Durability Roofing Co. He is survived by his son,
Raymond, a brother, Michael, and two sisters, Jo Ann Mauser and Mary
Lou Erwin. Mary Lou was very instrumental in managing details of our
club for many years.
Celebration of Life was held Nov. 23 at Pathways Community Church
in Santee.

Other Accordion Events
Plan to come to Yuma, we have a lot of fun. Many good hotels nearby. Many of us
will stay at the Shilo Inn in Yuma. We also enjoy eating at the Cracker Barrel restau-
rant before going home. This year the Octoberfest will be sponsored by the city of
Yuma. It is held in the old Padres’ baseball practice ballpark. Last year, saw a large
crowd with many activities, music and German beer and food.

February 9th ALSI Meeting - Lou Jacklich Accordionist
Extraordinaire Attendees at the February 9th meeting at Mangia Italiano Restaurant in Chula Vista are in for a real treat with
the music of Accordion Maestro Lou Jacklich.
Lou Jacklich hails from Hayward, CA and has been entertaining and
teaching for 75 years. His accomplishments as an accordionist and con-
tributor to the accordion community are extraordinary. He launched
the Lou Jacklich School of Music in the early 50s with over 400 stu-
dents and 7 instructors working for him. Collectively, over 1000 stu-
dents have been trained under master accordionist, Lou Jacklich. He
actively performs and teaches (including via Skype). He also leads the
San Francisco Accordion Club’s monthly jam band.
He is a west coast pioneer with the electronic accordion in the late 50s and early 60s. He had a Capitol Rec-
ord contract and produced records, including “Lou Jacklich Plays” which features 12 unique arrangements
highlighting his versatility, and creativity beyond just one particular style that usually marks a players trade-

At the February meeting he will be reprising some of the crowd-pleasing tunes from the aforementioned link
on his acoustic accordion.Plus he will be performing his own jazz arrangements of popular standards.
Lou Jacklich is a distinguished award-winning accordionist who was honored in 2014 with the San Francisco Accordion Club’s lifetime achievement award, served as the 2016 Cotati Accordion Festival Honorary Direc-
tor, and was co-recipient of the 2016 Las Vegas International Accordion Convention’s inaugural Art Van
Damme Education Award.In 2019 he was inducted by the Federation of American Musicians, Singers and Per-
forming Artists Inc. (Est. 2006, New York) into the American Accordion Hall of Fame and also the Accordion
World Hall of Fame.

Bobby Dietsch, who lives in
Crestline, is an ALSI mem-
ber who also attends the Los
Angeles Accordion Club. In
November he was their fea-
tured player and squeezed-
out a 50 minute program for
them. We would sure enjoy
hearing him play for us again.
He did a great job on Tony’s
Polka last time he visited us.
STEERING COMMITTEE, next meeting will be
on Wednesday, December 11th. We meet at
Marie Callender’s 6950 Alvarado Rd. (Hwy 8 and
70th. next to Denny’s) at 10:30 AM for break-
fast to discuss upcoming events for ALSI. This meeting is open to anyone interested, so
please join us. We drink a lot of coffee. Please come to this meeting if you are interested
in being a board member. Just show-up and say
hello, “I am here to help”. Please note we are meeting before our Decem-
ber meeting not after, as our ALSI meeting is on
the 3rd. Sunday of the month.
Room 100 - go here. Approach Mt. Miguel on Kempton Ave.. Use entrance on Kempton Ave,
marked on map with red “Z”, and park in employee and visitor parking area marked on map
with red “X”. It is ok to park in employee spaces, being Sunday.
Bailey Hall, our usual place - do not go here. Parking in San Carlos lot will require going up
some stairs to get to room 100 from the back.

Beverley Fess is a Master accordionist and
piano teacher from Okotoks, Alberta, Can-
ada. She is an active member of the Calga-
ry Accordion Association. See the Nov. is-
sue of the Reed Block for her bio write-up.
We are wowed to have her come to visit
us.
