Welcome to the October issue of the Alresford Forum. We hope you like

this month's issue which is packed with interesting articles from our writers.

As per usual you will find a monthly recipe, a children’s activity corner and many other interesting articles.

We thank all of the people who responded to our request for writers. The Forum has now built up a portfolio of wonderful local writers that will bring even more interest and topical issues to light around our area.

From next month we will be adding a letters and comments page to the magazine. It's your opportunity to speak to us and let us have your thoughts, be it on the magazine itself or the content of an article. The Forum is for the community and the community needs a voice, so our letters page will give you the freedom to speak.

The Forum team are constantly working hard to provide a good quality, informative and interesting magazine for our readers. We aim to include as many local events and news items as possible – so if you have a bric-a-brac sale; fete; class or exhibition etc. that you would like advertised for free in our magazine, please contact us at the earliest opportunity and we will include it in our News and Events section.

Don't forget if you would like to read the magazines online simply visit the site and click on 'Latest Issue' in the menu bar . If you saw something in a previous issue and need to find it then click on 'Old Issues' tab in the menu bar.

welcometo the Alresford Forum

Doesn't time fly - next month the magazine will be four years old! It seems such a short time since we put together the first magazine. We would like to thank all of our advertisers, contributors and readers for making the magazine what it is today. We have so many plans for the forthcoming years, rest assured your local community magazine will become bigger and more interesting.

If you feel that we have missed something from our pages or you have an idea for the magazine you would like to discuss then please contact the editor on: 01962 735137 or alternativelyemail: [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you.

at Studio49

Studio 49 is proud to add Dermalogica’s outstanding high performance skin care

range to the beauty salon's already comprehensive list of treatments and products and, to celebrate its arrival in Alresford, is holding a special event to mark this new partnership.

The salon which opened eight years ago is situated in The Dean, Alresford. Studio 49 is a bright contemporary salon offering a wide range of beauty treatments. The business has gone from strength to strength and now with the introduction of this prestigious globally-renowned brand, salon owner, Kellie Sweet, is confident that they will stay those crucial steps ahead of today’s savvy clients who know their skin care.

“Dermalogica products contain absolutely none of the more commonly used beauty ingredients such as mineral oil, lanolin, artificial colours/fragrances or cheap fillers,” says Kellie, “but instead their products are completely natural and botanically researched and developed by the International Dermal Institute. In addition, products have never been animal tested

and all skin treatments are 100% customised to individual needs.”

To celebrate its arrival and official launch, Studio 49 is holding a special ‘one-off’ event on Tuesday 5th October from 6 – 9pm.

At the open evening current and new clients are invited to try the full range of products for themselves and also experience free face mapping, free skin consultations and free skin scanning. In addition to Studio 49’s team of friendly and proficient therapists, a Dermalogica skin care professional will be on hand to personally advise and, of course, light refreshments will be served throughout the evening.

“We will also be offering a special 10% reduction on all products purchased during the evening,” says Kellie “and for those wishing to book a Dermalogica facial during October and November there will be the added benefit of a 20% discount on regular prices. Finally, all those who

attend will also take home an interesting little goody bag of products to try!”

Invitations will be limited so, to secure your place at the open evening, please call Studio 49 on 01962 738683 as soon as possible with your name and contact number.

As well as the new Dermalogica Facials and Body Treatments the following are also available at Studio 49 :

You have your own needs and desires. That is why Three·Six·Five Hair Designers listen to what you say. They know the difference

between ordinary hairdressing and personal designing.

ImportantIf you make a mistake with clothes or make-up you can,

Three·Six·Five TogethernessWe care about the way your hair looks between visits to the salon.

Three·Six·Five Hairdressers are specially trained. They use a ‘Five-Step’ recipe to make sure the successful balance of ingredients is right for each client. They know the value of asking the right questions and looking at all the key elements of a hair design which will work for you every day.

SpecialThey have a special service for new clients. If you

have always wanted to meet a top hairdresser to whom you could say ‘What would you do for me?’ now you have. Just ask for the Three·Six·Five Recipe service: like you ‘it’s a little special’. So friendly.

Alresford Surgery NewsDoctors Consultation Times from 4th OctoberWith the retirement of David Green and Sheila Cassidy and arrival of Dr Paul Webb and Dr Christine Glew we have slightly altered our surgery schedule. Surgeries run from 8.40am in the morning and 3.20pm in the afternoon as detailed below. Our extended hours surgeries offer booked appointments only, on one evening a week and Saturday morning. The surgery is open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 6.30 pm

Dr Richard Cribb Tuesday, Thursday and Friday Dr Peter Stokes Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morningDr Ann Lowman Monday and Thursday Dr Susie Wright Tuesday and Thursday Dr Anna Cross Wednesday and Friday Dr Paul Webb Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday Dr Jane Stebbing Monday and Thursday afternoonDr Claire Walsh Thursday and Friday Dr Christine GlewMonday and Wednesday

Patients do not need to register with a new doctor if they were previously seen by Dr Green or Dr Cassidy. We operate a ‘shared list’ system and patients can choose which doctor they wish to see at the time of booking an appointment. If a patient has an ongoing condition it is best for them to regularly see the same doctor. We would like to suggest that it may be easier to book appointments with one of our new doctors.

The Rural Coalition, an umbrella body supported by ACRE, CLA and the

CPRE, published “The Rural Challenge” Report in August, looking at how to achieve sustainable rural communities in the 21st century. It’s worth reading-: many of the problems are familiar to us, but it proposes solutions too.

Choosing a tradesmanIf you don’t have a personal recommendation from friends or family it can be difficult to know who to trust when looking to buy goods or services. The ‘Buy With Confidence’ directory gives people the reassurance that businesses have been approved by the County Council’s Trading Standards service. The updated directory is available from libraries or you can request by e-mail: [email protected], by phone 08454 04 05 06, or search for a trader online at www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk

SEN provisionParents whose children have particular needs often come to me feeling battered by the system as they battle for the best outcomes for their children. Now is your chance to influence new National Policy. Sarah Teather, Minister of State for Children and Families, is seeking views on education for SEN pupils including those with learning difficulties and physical disabilities. The Green Paper will consider how to achieve better educational outcomes and life chances, better early intervention, greater choice for parents in the schools, and services they provide

and streamlined assessment systems, so that parents don't feel they have to struggle with the system to get the support they need. It will suggest ways in which public services can be centred more on the needs of the family and child, joining up support from education, social care and health, particularly for those with the most severe and complex needs and at key transitions. The consultation group says it wants to hear from anyone who has experienced services for children and young people with special educational needs or disabilities - those who use them, and those who provide, or commission them. The consultation acknowledges that people's perspectives are varied and understandably deeply felt.

Please contribute your experiences and the problems and priorities from your perspective. Share your ideas for practical solutions, and if things are working well, please tell the minister why they work, or how they save money or time. To respond, contact me for a paper form or go online to www.education.gov.uk/consultations. Closing date 15th October 2010.

Parish Fetes and CouncilsWe have all enjoyed the local fetes this Summer, and perhaps joined in the fun of helping beforehand and on the day. They were all different and all great fun. My highlight? The brave group who learned to Morris dance on one hot sunny afternoon, keeping British tradition alive and dancing! Huge thanks to all who contributed to the success of the fetes and summer events.Every Parish Council holds regular meetings. This unsung band of volunteers deserves your interest and help too! This winter, why not go along to their meetings, all advertise the dates locally, and see what is being done in your area!

Alresford Town Council Reports

Stratton Bates HedgerowEarlier this year complaints were received from local residents regarding the amount of waste, including human and dog excrement, around the vicinity of the hedge on Stratton Bates Recreation Ground. The hedge adjoins the heavily used path between Windsor Road and Ashburton Road. The hedgerow seems to encourage waste and hinders clearance and its removal would make the maintenance of this area much easier, as well as removing the cover for people creating waste. In March the Council resolved to remove the hedge this autumn to ensure that any nesting birds were safeguarded, after checking that there were was no legislation to prohibit its removal. No such legislation exists but we have received a number of objections to its removal from residents and others outside the town. Councillors may re-consider this decision at the October meeting.

Highways MaintenanceHampshire County Council (HCC) agreed that it would cut-back roadside vegetation in Tichborne Down in August 2008 but two years on no work

had been undertaken. Indeed the situation has deteriorated with overgrown vegetation now impacting the east side of Sun Lane. We took this matter up with HCC and some work has been carried out with the vegetation being partially cut back and remaining clearance is scheduled for completion soon.

The clearance of footpaths on the east side of Sun Lane, Orchard Close to Headley Close and the Golf Course were also raised, with a request that the work be given high priority as they represent a hazard to both pedestrians and motorists. We have also requested that work at these locations be carried out within a scheduled maintenance programme.

Flooding at the junction of New Farm Road and Spring Gardens is recurring as a result of the recent heavy rains. Regular clearance of the drains is critical in this area, probably more frequently than the annual programme. However, we believe there is an underlying problem with surface water drainage in this area and we will continue to press HCC for a comprehensive solution.

Perins Car ParkThe Council has been working closely with Perins School to

find a solution to the closure of the car park on Sunday afternoons and Bank Holidays and with the active support of the school an answer has now been found. It is proposed to install ‘dragon’s teeth’ to prevent cars entering the area of the car park dedicated to school use. The solution will allow cars to exit from this area when it is used as a public overflow car park and with the ‘dragon’s teeth’ in place the school is happy to leave the Jacklyn’s Lane gate open until 10 pm on weekdays and at least 6 pm on weekends and Bank Holidays. Winchester City Council supports the proposal and is happy that the grant money received from SEEDA be used for this purpose. At the time of writing we are still awaiting a positive response from The Alresford & District Partnership.

Jacklyns Lane Bus ShelterOne of the bus shelters in Jacklyns Lane was recently demolished by a SERCO refuse lorry. SERCO acted swiftly and positively to make the area safe and have accepted responsibility for the incident. The bus shelter will be replaced at no cost to the taxpayer.

Year End AccountsThe Audit Commission has now signed off the Year End Accounts for the financial years 2006/7 and 2007/8. The Auditor made some recommendations, which are not mandatory, and they will be considered at the next Council meeting. We will report more fully on this subject in the next Forum Magazine.

Here's a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are) 1. When you say 'room' or 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ish. But we don't quibble if the areas are a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes us to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount rates is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tv's. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden' extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay (VAT is included).

The Alpha course is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith in eight thought provoking weekly sessions. It is low key, informal and there is no cost.

Our Autumn Alpha will begin with a launch evening (that will include a light meal) on Thursday 14th October at 19:30 at New Farm Chapel. Each following Thursday session will include food, DVD and discussion on subjects including Who is Jesus?, why did Jesus die?

For more information phone 01962 734287or e-mail [email protected]

New Farm Chapel News

We have reached the time of year when we say 'goodbye' to

the summer and 'hello' to the Autumn! In our last news item, we looked back over various activities, which involve most age groups in the community.

Now, having just recommenced the various groups of: Toddlers, Senior Citizens, and Youth Club (see details elsewhere in the magazine for timing of these), it all emphasises the start of a new phase in our life and lives, even if it is the last quarter of the year! We are planning to start another Alpha Course (see advert above), on 14 October; please call or email for details. The Alpha Course is a way of finding out about the Christian message, -its importance and having the opportunity to

ask questions, in an informal and friendly setting as well as enjoying a meal together, all completely free of charge.

Then we are due to hold our Harvest Thanksgiving Service on Sunday 3 October, when there will be representative from Tearfund to talk about their work. This is an organisation which assists with the development needs of other countries, all done in a Christian context and with a Christian ethos. Monetary donations will be given to Tearfund. Any produce items, etc., given on that occasion will be taken to a local charity for needy people. So, however autumn is shaping up for us, in the areas of work, home or personal life, and whether there are challenges we might face or not, we can

be sure of the reality and truth of God's promise that not only will He be our Shepherd (Psalm 23), but that He also says, ''I will go before you.....'' (Isaiah 45 verse 2)- when we are prepared to trust Him.

Three internationally acclaimed female artists who specialise in the portrayal of

animals will be showing a selection of their work at a major exhibition being held from 3 to 31 October at Stockbridge Gallery in Hampshire. It is rare for such an extensive and unique collection of 75 exceptional pieces of work to be exhibited outside London.Sam Sopwith, Kate Denton and Georgie Welch have each established themselves at the forefront of their chosen genre and the exhibition will include a mix of both their canine and equine works in two and three dimensions. Sam Sopwith studied with the renowned sporting artist Neil Forster, under whose expertise she developed her skills in drawing animals. She has undertaken many commissions on a wide variety of subjects, including houses, racehorses, highland cattle, portraits of members of Her Majesty's Bodyguard and virtually every known breed of dog. Sam is the grand-daughter of Sir Thomas Sopwith, the pioneering aircraft designer.

Kate Denton has worked for 30 years as a sculptor and went to Goldsmiths College where she studied under Sir Ivor Robert-Jones. She took a post graduate qualification in foundry techniques and then worked in Poplar, making her one of the first women in the UK to work in a commercial foundry. She has exhibited broadly throughout the UK and South Africa, and was elected to the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1993.Georgie Welch specialises in limited edition bronzes of dogs and horses. Having spent most of her childhood on

horseback Georgie left school and rode professionally until she started sculpting in 1995 and now works solely as a figurative sculptor. Georgie won the British Sporting Art Trust Award in 1998 and all of her sculptures are cast in the `lost wax` method of casting at the renowned Pangolin Editions Foundry in the UK. She was also recently acknowledged as one of the best in show at the The Society of Equestrian Artists International Open Exhibition.Stockbridge Gallery specialises in animalier art and sculpture, exhibiting a fine selection of work from early 19th century to modern day artists. “I opened the gallery in 2009, having had a life-long passion for art, and in particular dogs in art. Despite the difficult economic conditions, interest in animalier work continues to flourish,” says Victoria Armstrong, curator of Stockbridge Gallery. “We are delighted to have the opportunity to hold this major exhibition, featuring three of the most talented

contemporary UK animaliers, whose work features in the private collections of many notable connoisseurs. The aim of the exhibition, however, is to show that beautiful works of art are also affordable and the exhibition will display some 75 pieces, which we hope will appeal to animal lovers and art lovers alike.” The preview is to be held on 3rd October (noon to 3pm) and for more information or to request a catalogue, phone Stockbridge Gallery on 01264 810142, email [email protected] or visit www.dogsinart.com. The gallery is situated in the picturesque village of Stockbridge, Hampshire and is open to the public every week from Tuesday to Saturday. Private viewings available on request. ‘Dogs in Art’ is happy to ship work throughout the UK, Europe and internationally.

True to our slogan of ‘Local people helping local people’, September was an

important month for the Alresford Pigs, with funds raised via support at the hugely popular Alresford Show and the launch of a HELPLINE – put in place to encourage more individuals, groups, clubs and organisations to request financial and/or manpower support. On the ‘earnings’ side, this year’s Alresford Show proved to be another bumper year, with record crowds enjoying some late summer sunshine along with

a vast array of livestock, local exhibitor stands and things for all the family to enjoy. As usual, the Pigs were on hand to help the Show Committee

organise and man the car parks and entry gates as well as this taking on additional duties as Safety Stewards this year. To complete all these

tasks, the Pigs drew on superb support from a wide range of friends and family, as well as local clubs and committees, including the Alresford Rugby Club, Old Alresford Cricket Club, Tichborne Cricket Club, Ropley Parish Hall Committee and helpers from 345 Playgroup, Sun Hill Juniors and Cheriton schools. With record crowds and a new show layout it meant that the teams were exceptionally busy, but everyone rose to the occasion and ensured that the day could be enjoyed by all visitors.

Earning more funds on the day the Pigs also set up a ‘publicity stand’, raising additional monies with what proved to be a very popular raffle. Thank you to everyone who visited us on the day and who bought a ticket or two. With all proceeds from the work the Pigs performed at

the Alresford Show going back into the local community we are delighted to announce the launch of a new HELPLINE.

As an organisation that has a 36 year history in helping people, a help line is, perhaps, long overdue, and whilst not replacing the welcomed letters that we receive (our address is available on our website) we hope that the Helpline will encourage even more local people to contact us, bringing to our attention ‘worthy causes’ for us to support.

Pictured left at the launch of the 01962-658961 HELPLINE are a selection of Pigs who’ll be on hand to advise and support on a range of local worthy causes.

Change, to become different, is an integral process in our lives. Whether it

be our appearance, our aging process, families, homes, finances, gardens, hobbies, cars or the way we go about our daily lives; all are subject to change.

Some changes we make are deliberate, some are inevitably forced upon us; some will have enormous impact, others are so subtle we may not even notice them initially.

Change can be both good and bad, can make us happy or sad. However, there are certain areas in life where change is not so straightforward, where it can be surreptitious, a fickle friend and even biased. Changes and proposed changes to the place where we live is one such area.

Like many people I have lived here all of my life and have seen many changes , I could, rather sadly, tell you what most of the shops were

ten or even twenty years ago. I remember The Dean School when Nursery and Linnets Road were just green fields.

In my youth I was unconcerned with change and despite the fact that large changes were happening around me, thought that Alresford would always ‘stay the same’.

In my early twenties a group of us built thirteen houses on wooded land at the top of Beech Rd and were outraged that many people objected so strongly. We wanted a home; they wanted Alresford to stay the same.

Later I found it morally reprehensible that people could sell their gardens to developers; now I have children to get to Uni one day I wish I had a large garden to sell too! So I’ve gone from a ‘NIMBY’ to not minding in-filling at all! Yet ask me about town planning meetings where change appears to be ‘rubber stamped’ prior to community consultation,

when individuals with plans for sustainable housing or those creating businesses that are enhancing in environmental, economic and aesthetic areas are subject to planning witch hunts , allegedly. Then I want to protest.

Ask me about ‘sweeteners’ like, sloping rugby pitches and new schools and I want to know, albeit irrationally, why we can’t have those for the benefit of our community without huge housing developments that go hand in hand with them. I want change, but on my terms. So you see change can be fickle...what do you think ???

ISSue 47 OCTOBER www.alresfordforum.co.uk

Its Sunday 6.20am, I sit glassy eyed with Star I in the trusty Renault which is stuffed to the gunnels with the debris of our

lives.

Is there a crisis? No far from it; we have successfully completed phase one of the major house de-clutter and await the arrival of a dear chum and mate of Star I with whom we will journey to the old cattle market in our local Cathedral city. For it is here, as virgin vendors, we will attend our first ever car boot sale.

My chum, who is an experienced ‘booter’, assures me that an early start is essential and she’s right; by the time we arrive there are already three lanes of vehicles varying in age and type, neatly queued. So we obediently take our place.

And there we wait a little while…and then just a little while longer…Luckily the Earl (Grey) is with us and as we sip Star I notices two men sidling up to the back of the car clearly checking out the contents. I feel strangely awkward about the whole thing, even slightly sullied.I wondered if the cows at market felt that way as they were scrutinized for breeding, price and ultimately the best cuts.

Cattle Market and Conspicuous Consumption

My bovine sympathises were interrupted by the high viz marshal waving us on to our allotted spot. At this point it became immediately apparent that we were surrounded by expert sales people; three tables with cloths over seemed to be de rigor and all their respective wares individually priced and displayed to their best advantage.

Our stock was strewn on the ground around the back of the car and was in danger of encroaching upon the neighbouring pitches, as we battled to retrieve the table, which the husband had kindly packed, from underneath the remaining boxes.

Mild panic set in; we were pounced upon hungry bargain hunters, “How much for that Hornby love? Will you sell the trains separately, eh? Eh??"

I could only manage “Um...err...” in response but managed to fend them off with exorbitant prices. But I need not have worried for Star I having set up the stall table and all had now seemingly turned into Alan Sugar. “Sit in the boot Mum with the petty cash and leave this to me ok?”A polite way of saying ‘You’re fired’ I think. So there the Earl and I sat in the warm Sunday sunshine while Star I waxed lyrical about our

bargains relative to RRP to the interested, and slightly bemused, punters. The introduction of a ‘buy one get one free’ initiative meant those hard to shift cuddly toys were soon leaping from the box.

Linguistic and cultural divides presented no barrier to this mini capitalist as ‘Robbo –Sapian’ skipped off – or would have done if he had the batteries- with a delighted Polish punter.

I’d started to enjoy the whole thing when...out from the dark spaces between the cars they came, furtive and nervous they sidled up to the boot of the trusty Renault to make their desperate enquiries. They were the Hornby hungry, those lusting for Lego, the Duplo dependents.

Once I had casually mentioned that there might be some in the large blue box

they pounced on their game sorting through with great dexterity, gently caressing each precious piece found.Star I had, rather worryingly, sensed their strong desire and set a high price. They hesitated but the urge was too strong; powerless to resist the deal was done.

It had been a long morning, by 11.30 Star I was tired of being an entrepreneur and set of in search of burgers leaving me in sole charge. In his absence and with the spirit of ‘everything must go' I made the executive decision, I‘d mark all the remaining stock down to ten...pence.

Despite Star I complaining about the lack of profit margin he happily threw the empty boxes and few remaining books into the trusty Renault and we were off home some seventy pounds the richer.

I was under strict instructions not to come back with anything so I made a quick detour to our local recycling tip...where I managed to pick up two giant magnets and a football table!!

Well, never could resist a bargain.

28 Community News

Grants totalling £3,190 have enabled the New Alresford Town

Trust to continue to provide Community Minibus services for the Alresford area.

The Trust relies on the support of local councils in the provision of operating grants to subsidise the community bus service and to keep fares competitive. Grants have been received from Hampshire County Council (£1,790), Winchester City Council (£1,000) and Old Alresford Parish Council (£400). Further grants are being sought, however, from other local organisations so that the costs of running the service can be met.

Pam Stevens, Chair of the Community Minibus project and a Trustee of the New Alresford Town Trust, commented “The minibus is the most important activity done by the Trust or any organisation in New Alresford and I am therefore so pleased that HCC, WCC and Old Alresford Parish Council have granted us this money, despite the economic difficulties, and it shows how the local organisations believe the minibus is important to the community, and in particular the elderly and disabled”.

Councillor Mel Kendal, Executive Member for Environment at Hampshire

Cllr & Mrs F Allgood (HCC) City Councillor Ernie Jeffs; Kevin Ings (Officer HCC); Cllr Jackie Porter (HCC); Bernard Tucker (Old Alresford Parish Council); Mark Luckham (Trustee); Len Orton (Trustee) Robin Atkins (Trustee); John Watley (Alresford Pigs) Bill Witchard (voluntary driver) and his son Joe; Pam Stevens (Minibus co-ordinator and Trustee).

Grants help keep Alresford Community Minibus running

County Council, said “I am delighted that we have been able to support this valuable community resource. Community transport schemes like this are a lifeline for many people without their own transport or a suitable public transport alternative. It is particularly good that there is such a facility for residents of the Alresford Community who are elderly or who have restricted mobility.” Bernard Tucker, the Chairman of Old Alresford Parish Council said, “The Parish Council is most supportive of the Community Minibus as it is an excellent idea used by many residents, and therefore the Parish Council were pleased to make a donation towards its upkeep.”

Andy Hickman, an Officer for Winchester City Council said,

“The City Council is pleased to be able to help support the Alresford Community Bus, which provides an invaluable service enabling community groups and local people to access important services”.

The current minibus, which the operating grants will support, was purchased in October 2008. Since then, it has made 933 journeys, covering 23,304 miles and carrying 8,260 passengers.

The service could not operate without the help of 30 volunteer drivers and a Trustee co-ordinator who works at least 10 hours a week, unpaid.

Tom, Dick and Harry live at the bottom of our garden. To the uninitiated,

these are our apple trees. Nicknamed in a flight of fancy they have absurdly stuck. The names serve us very well, even if they totally bemuse everyone one else. “Harry is not looking well” (he is most in the shade). “I’ve lopped a bit off Tom” (he overhangs the path). “Dick is looking a bit droopy” Beg pardon! No, it’s all above board. We bought dwarfing rootstock so that they would not become too big for the garden. Except no-one thought to explain this to Tom, Dick and Harry. We chose good croppers; we now know the error of our ways. They try very hard to grow above their alleged 8 – 10 feet. They have very spindly branches and very heavy crops; which we annually forget to thin out until it’s too far gone. So now our three apple trees look more like weeping willows. And yes, we probably should have espaliered them at some point, but they are now seven and they are set in their ways. So, having remembered at the last minute to thin them out a bit, I have supported them best I can all summer (physically and emotionally you understand) and must now try and harvest the bountiful crop before they all drop to the ground and feed the squirrels.

We were a bit late to the garden party this year; on a Friday in May we managed to beat the Bank Holiday pandemonium and come home laden with trays of bedding plants and stock for the vegetable patch. All of which sat in its trays for another two weeks, whilst I valiantly watered it daily and we bemoaned the lack of time to plant any of it. Then one afternoon my husband grabbed

the opportunity

and planted up the vegetable patch before it got too late in the season. He toiled hard, his back ached and he declared he felt like a ‘proper gardener’. It all looked magnificent. We awoke the next morning to find the rows of brassicas stripped bare. ‘Pigeons’ said Mother. ‘Really?’ we replied in disbelief. Our innocence was abruptly ended when a suspicious looking pigeon was spotted with a beak full of green leaves. So next morning I quickly erected ‘the cage’; a triumph of bamboo canes, netting and twisty wire that has served very well to keep all manner of wildlife out and thwarted every attempt to get inside to weed. But then weeding is not my strong point. Well, it is a never ending task at the best of times and our garden is mostly dandelions. Mother suggested I start with one bed and try to keep it weed free. It was good advice, helped enormously by the fact that I picked the raised bed which is not only near enough to the back door for late evening pottering, but is now so overrun with herbs, raspberries, salad and a rampant courgette that any dandelion would be hard pressed to break though.

Our gardening efforts are always bound by time, energy and local pestilence. We have an unwritten agreement with wire worm that we will plant potatoes every year and they will neatly destroy them for us,

and this year’s attempts

at root vegetables have yet to tell just how

thriving our slug population is. But, despite the odds, our harvest has not been too bad and it all served very well when six year old daughter announced her school topic was ‘growing stuff’. We dashed around proudly taking pictures of all the fruit, herbs, salad and vegetables which at that point were looking positively luscious. A few weeks of unintentional neglect and the hardiest have proved their Darwinian point which we applauded by plundering their bounty, such as it was. We have had a few good servings of broad beans, broccoli, runner beans, courgettes and tonight the first couple of corn cobs. Even the tomatoes put on a good show, although you have to be really quick to get to them before the daughter! The raspberry plants brought from a local plant fair have had a good first year, as have the ‘marked down, end of line’ DIY shop strawberries. None of this matches the bounty of Mother’s harvest of course; personally I blame it on the soil - hers is perfectly brown and crumbly in that TV garden kind of way. She keeps sending me home with bagfuls of potatoes and delicious delicacies that make me want to try harder. But at least I can always rely on my three boys, Tom, Dick and Harry to reciprocate with bagfuls of apples that she uses to make all manner of things. ‘More power to her elbow’, as my Grandma would say.

A most delicious tart, a great success in my restaurant.

Method1. Cut the vanilla pod in half length wise. Grate the seeds inside. Boil 1 litre of water with 100 grams of sugar, the vanilla seeds and vanilla pod. When boiling also add the pieces of quince.2. Butter a ovenproof dish. Make a caramel in a saucepan using 175 grams of sugar. When a nice brown/gold colour remove from heat.3. Pre-heat the oven to 180˚C or Gas Mark 6.4. After 30 minutes strain the quinces from the

boling water with a strainer making sure that you keep the vanilla pod for later. Pour the caramel onto the oven proof dish and place the two half vanilla pods on top, then cover carefully with the pieces of quince. Place some bits of butter on top of the pieces of quince.5. Place the ovenproof dish into the oven and cook for approximately 30 minutes.6. Remove the dish from the oven and carefully pour off the extra juice. Cover the quinces with the pastry (you can brush with a little egg wash if you feel – this is not

La Tarte Tatin Aux Coings

really necessary as the tatin is served up side down). Poke once or twice in the middle with a small knife.7. Return to the oven for another 25 / 30 minutes. The tart must be beautiful gold brown.8. Take out of the oven and place the hot dish on a wet cloth (it helps release the tart from the dish).9. Place a large flat tart dish on the tart and turn over (away from you to avoid been burned by sugar or juice).10. Serve warm with an excellent vanilla ice cream.

Keep a day or two. Enjoy! Germain Marquis

Welcome to Sunbeams Children’s Centre

What is a Sure Start Children’s Centre?Children’s centres aim to give every child the best possible start in life. They are places where all families and those caring for children aged 0 to 5 years can easily access a range of different services to support them.

Through their local children’s centre, mums, dads and carers can access information, advice and support on a wide range of issues including health, parenting, childcare, early education and even employment advice. The idea of children’s centres is to focus on the local needs of the area they are in.

Each children’s centre focuses on the needs of their community and develop their services by asking local families what they want. Members of the local community are strongly encouraged to play an ongoing active role in the development and delivery of services.

About SunbeamsSunbeams is a new Sure Start Children’s Centre located within the grounds of Sun Hill Infant and Junior schools in a newly refurbished building. We are tucked away in a quiet area behind the Junior school.Parking is not available on the school site, but you can park on Sun Lane, with pedestrian access available from Sun Lane and Oak Hill. Sunbeams Children’s Centre covers a large catchment area including: The Alresfords, Four Marks, Medstead, Ropley, Cheriton,

Tisted and Bishops Sutton. Our centre building is a local hub for a wide range of integrated services, including outreach services delivered out in the wider community at various venues. Our aim is to provide groups and services to support local need, enhancing the services that are already in place. The centre is open Monday to Friday 9am – 3pm.

Alresford Voluntary Care Group provide transport for local people to the surgery,

dentists and to hospital appointments.

At a recent committee meeting it was even more apparent that we are desperate for more drivers. It has become a major problem as old age and illness has hit the Voluntary Care Group drivers very hard putting many of them out of action. The group has

also experienced difficulties finding drivers during holiday periods. During these periods people still need to visit the doctor, or get to the local hospital.

With cutbacks in the hospital transport we are being asked more and more to assist but sadly this is proving very difficult to achieve. So if you are able to offer some time to provide transport to Alresford residents please contact either Barbara Griffiths (01962 734408) or Jackie Elvins (01962) 735660.

What are the benefits of Solar PV?• Significantly reduced energy bills• can save over 1200kg of cO2 emissions per year based on a 2.8kWp size system• Reliable• Economic• get paid to generate your own electricity via the National Feed-in Tariff.

Save and Earn with Solar PV Panels

Why would I install Solar PV panels?Solar energy is the most abundant, quiet and reliable source of free, clean electricity for households and businesses alike.

The photovoltaic industry currently generates a relatively small part of the total renewable energy supply, less than wind, hydro power or biomass but it has the most potential. The increasing demand for PV has seen the market doubling in size every two years, making it the world's fastest growing energy technology. New government directives make Solar PV a fantastic way to reduce your energy bills and create income at the same time.

What is the Feed-in Tariff?Feed-in Tariffs (clean energy cashback) became available in great Britain from the 1st April 2010. Under this scheme energy suppliers make regular payments to householders and communities who generate their own electricity from renewable or low carbon sources such as solar electricity (PV) panels. get paid up to 41.3p/kWh for all electricity generated and an extra 3p/kWh for excess electricity exported to the National grid. The Feed-in Tariff is guaranteed by the government for 25 years and gives a possible 7-9% return on investment.

Do I need planning permission?Installing solar panels has now been made a lot simpler thanks to Permitted development rights introduced on 6th April 2008 in England and 12th march 2009 in Scotland.
