Alresford Rotary street collection raises £850 for Pakistan

The Rotary Club of Alresford was out in the rain last Saturday collecting money to

buy aid for people in the flood-stricken areas of Pakistan.

In only a few hours, local people donated more than £850. Since then the Club has received further donations of £130. The money is to be used to buy 2 Shelter Boxes, which contain a tent, cooking materials, water cleansing tablets, tools, blankets and a range of other materials that provide vital support to people in the worst affected areas. The Shelter Boxes are being shipped free of charge from the UK by Air Pakistan. Separately, on Monday evening, the Rotary Club of Alresford decided to spend a further £2,400 to send 16 Water Survival Boxes to Pakistan. Each of these

contains a filtration pack and enough chlorine tablets to provide clean water for a family of four for four months - as well as other survival equipment items. Alresford Rotary President, David Robinson commented: "We really appreciate the support that people gave on Saturday. Despite the rain, we got a very warm response.

People were reassured to know that the funds were all going to be spent directly on providing direct support in the flooded parts of Pakistan - with nothing wasted on overheads.

"We'd earlier sent a ShelterBox when we first heard about the catastrophe. The donations from local people last Saturday have enabled us to send a further two ShelterBoxes.

Now the problem is lack of safe drinking water and the health threat this represents, so we agreed on Monday to send 16 Water Survival Boxes as well."Contact: David Robinson, 07856 645399. The exact amount received was £850.56.

The Town Trustees were surprised at the latest role for the Alresford Minibus - a

bridal limousine! Suitably decorated with bridal ribbons, the minibus was hired to transport the bride, plus three bridesmaids, from The Bell Hotel to St John’s Church, a distance of just over 100 yards. Because the day was so wet, the Minibus was really useful: the route chosen was down Broad Street, across the Great Weir and down Drove Lane, returning towards St John’s up West Street: after a quick unscheduled stop to collect a forgotten bouquet from the Bell Hotel, the bus delivered Jane, her father and her bridesmaids to the Station Road entrance to St John’s Church.

shopping trips or evening drives: it was as a volunteer driver on one of the Alresford Pigs evening mystery drives for OAPs that Andy Fawcett decided the Minibus would be the ideal transport for his bride-to-be, Jane White, plus the couple’s three daughters – Mollie and Daisy Fawcett and Olivia White, acting as bridesmaids - for the 100 yard dash to the Church.

Bill Witchard, another of the Alresford volunteer drivers, was chosen for the job on the day, which was Friday 13th August: Bill reports that after tying the ribbons onto the vehicle, he found a black cat happily sitting on the driver’s seat watching the preparations!

The luck this brought did not stop the rain coming down, but Jane and her bridesmaids were pleased to have such exotic transport!

Alresford Town Council Reports

Provision of Rugby Pitches

A public meeting was recently held to discuss an outline proposal for the

land adjacent to Arlebury Park. The Council has been trying to acquire part of this land for a number of years, for rugby pitches and other recreational uses. The proposal was that in exchange for planning permission for 15 – 20 houses on the site, the town would acquire two rugby pitches, additional car parking and some 10 acres of additional open space for recreational use.

It was explained that this would be a significant addition to the town’s open space and would protect a key area of the town which adjoins sensitive countryside for ever, as well as providing much needed additional recreation space.

Attended by around 100 residents the view expressed by the majority of people at the meeting was that the site would be ideal for rugby pitches and recreational use but the provision of housing on the site was too high a price to pay for these extra benefits. The meeting expressed a preference that the Council actively pursue the Compulsory Purchase (CPO) of the land but it was explained that this could be a very costly exercise that could end up with the town paying around £1 million to acquire the land.

There is no guarantee that a CPO will succeed and

there is, of course, the ever present danger that the developer may yet apply for planning permission for a considerable number of houses leaving what remains at risk. It was felt that more precise estimates were needed in respect of the CPO and it was suggested that the Council spend money on engaging professional and legal advisors to establish more exact cost estimates for the compulsory acquisition of the land.

At the August Council meting it was agreed to budget £10,000 to cover these costs, making an increase in next year’s Council Tax if this proves necessary. Work has now begun on obtaining professional and legal advice and realistic estimates will be published as soon as they have been received.

Vandalism at the ARCThe front door and two windows of the main hall of the Alresford Recreation Centre were smashed from the outside recently. The youth responsible was apprehended by the Police at 4am when they responded to the alarm call. Full reparation for the damage will be made to the Council by his family.

Development levies for Highway ImprovementsFor some time it has been possible to levy a charge on property developments to cover local highways improvements. This has not been happening in Alresford but Winchester City Council

has now agreed that this levy will be applied on all future developments. The money raised will be used for making identified highways improvements, particularly in the town centre, e.g. West Street, pedestrian access to station car park. This general levy will be applied where there is no requirement for highways improvements in connection with the actual development.

Sun Lane Bridge ImprovementsPlans are well advanced to provide a footpath on the station side of Sun Lane railway bridge. The existing grass verge on the opposite side of the bridge will be cleared leaving the carriageway approximately the same width.

It has been suggested that a traffic priority system be introduced, similar to Jacklyns Lane, with priority being given to traffic going south towards the school. We would be interested in residents’ views on this project.

The Alpha course is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith in eight thought provoking weekly sessions. It is low key,informal and there is no cost.

Our Autumn Alpha will begin with a launch evening (that will include a light meal) on Thursday 14th October at 19:30 at New Farm Chapel. Each following Thursday session will include food, DVD and discussion on subjects including Who is Jesus?, why did Jesus die?

In this summer period, may be we have all tried to have some kind of break from

the usual round of work, school, college, etc. Its good to be able to relax and get a change of scenery as well as trying to get a renewed

perspective on things.At NFC, we have also had a 'break' from the usual weekly activities, like Toddlers on Tuesdays, Senior Cits on Wednesdays, and Youth Club on Fridays.

Before they all closed down for the summer break, each was able to have a 'finale' – the Senior Cits a Strawberry Tea, whilst the Toddlers and Youth Club were able to hold a Family Barbeque at Bighton Village Hall. Both events were appreciated by all who were able to attend.

All 3 activities are now planning recommencement

in September, as well as our aim to hold another Alpha Course later in the autumn.If you or any of your family members are interested in any of these activities, and would appreciate more information, or you may require some practical help or indeed a listening ear, then please get in touch.

Thinking things through: sometimes we can hear familiar, or semi familiar words, but their reality escapes us. Take for instance, ''The Lord is my Shepherd'', the opening words of Psalm 23 in the Bible. We can hear these words, read or sung, at

Alresford Branch of The Royal British Legion

The branch is on the point of closing, it is as serious as that, down really to two

main factors:-

1. An aging membership2. Not one of 120 members are prepared to take on the main committee positions a: Chairman b: Secretary c: Poppy appeal organiser d: Membership secretary e.: Welfare secretary

It is indeed a very sad state of affairs. Two letters have been sent to all members, plus an extraordinary general meeting was held in April 2010 asking for officers. The second letter was sent from the County Head Quarters at Eastleigh. The only response the Chairman has received is 4 members who would only be prepared to help with Poppy Appeal (but not to take overall “in charge” of organising the Poppy Appeal.

The Local branch is really looking for urgent help and you do not need to be a member of the Royal British Legion, not even an ex-service person and keen to help the branch and would be prepared to give a little of your time (you will not be left to get on with it.) ‘Please give this last wake up call your serious consideration.’

The branch meet every two months but numbers have dropped to a very low level and plus a full committee meets 3 times a year. Any one interested to find out more please ring the Chairman, John Cattle on 01962 734846.

The BoyfriendACTS is gearing up for its next spectacular production, to be given 23rd -26th February 2011. The Boyfriend by Sandy Wilson is an exciting 1930's pastiche with lots of great songs and a terrific plot! Catering, Outings & Events for the Alresford Pigs Financed by the Alresford Pigs and organised by Mrs. Maureen Bunday, Makins Court in Alresford was the location for last month’s annual residents BBQ. With 10 of The Pigs trotting into action to erect gazebos of various sizes, and then prepare the food, we were supported on the day by Paul Harrison, the local Alresford chef in the Makins Court kitchens, and Gordon Bunday on the BBQ for a spectacular lunchtime treat.

Thanks to the gazebos, not even a last minute shower messed up the tables, and a fine feast was served up by several of The Pigs wives and the Alresford Scouts. Thanks must also go to Soles the Butchers, in Alresford who supplied the delicious sausages laced with special BBQ sauce – these received a sumptuous response!

The Pigs would not be the Pigs without organising more

events involving food, so after only a week in which to get their appetites back, the town minibus delivered 11 Makins Court residents to the Horse and Groom for an early evening feast. Elbowing out the normal after- work drinkers to get their bulk order in, they also send their apologies to anyone who was disturbed when they left the pub a little later than planned!!

Given time off for good behaviour several of The Pigs have also been spotted driving the town minibus through rural Hampshire seeking out local pubs and beauty spots for elderly Alresford residents. We are gearing up for another s p e c t a c u l a r Alresford Show

this year hot on the heels of our record breaking 2009 year when the show enjoyed fabulous weather. Improving on our new and very popular layout visitors can enjoy a bigger show, with lots to see and do. The Show has deservedly won itself a fantastic reputation for being a fun, traditional family day out, with children under 14 entering FREE.

The Show organisers would like to reassure visitors that they have been working very hard on traffic management and parking arrangements to ensure there is no repetition of last years queues. There will be a bus service to the Showground from outside Alresford Fire Station. We have new footpath signs for those who enjoy a stroll to the show from Alresford. The important message for drivers is please ‘Follow the Signs’ to avoid queues!

This very traditional agricultural show has been held in Tichborne Park now for over 100 years. It is quintessentially English. With horticultural tent, produce and craft tents, WI , the Hampshire Hunt Hounds, Sandhurst & Aldershot Beagles, cattle, sheep, pigs, buffalo, alpacas, bee displays, ferrets, poultry show, donkeys, heavy horses,

horse competitions and much much more. The children's entertainment includes a fab fun farmyard playground, Punch & Judy, Circus workshops, tree climbing, all the animals, make your own smoothies...the list is endless!

We have a large and scrumptious variety of local catering outlets together with tasty world food options. A local bar and beer tent, and local real ale tent, real coffee and a whole host of other gastronomic delights!

This year our main attraction are the pony club games, described as ‘fun, fast and fantastic’. Four local pony clubs will compete against one another in a variety of games. Each rider requires determination, courage and good all round riding ability to successfully complete each game. We also have a Pirelli natural horsemanship display later on in the Horse Rings.

As a traditional agricultural show with its charitable roots in agricultural education we have a large ongoing education programme run with the help of Sparsholt College and involving thirteen primary schools in and around the Winchester area. Among the local schools involved are Sun Hill Junior, Preston Candover Primary, Medstead Primary, Four Marks Primary,

Itchen Abbas Primary and Cheriton Primary. The Schools are assigned an adopted farm for one year, which they visit and then undertake various Countryside Projects to help the children broaden their understanding of the land, wildlife and how food is produced. The projects are judged and the winner awarded a Trophy at the Alresford Show at 2.30pm.

Monies raised at the Alresford Show are redistributed annually by the show society to various charities in and around Alresford.

The bell has rung on summer and it’s time to get back into the school routine. For

many busy mums that means the dreaded dilemma of the lunch box - how to pack the necessary nutrition into something that the kids will actually eat. The simple carrot could just be mum’s magic ingredient!

As the nation’s favourite vegetable1 consumers crunch their way through an amazing 700,000 tonnes of carrot a year – that’s around 100 carrots per person. Fortunately, their popularity extends to children, with many citing it as their favourite vegetable. However, for any awkward little darlings who refuse to eat carrot, the promise of the power of night vision might just sway it! There is scientific proof supporting the old wives’ tale that carrots help you to see in the dark. Carrots are packed with Beta-carotene which is converted into vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A is vital for healthy vision as it is transformed into a purple pigment called rhodopsin in the retina, and this pigment is essential for vision in dim light.

Many of Britain’s children are actually deficient in Vitamin A; the National Diet and Nutrition Survey of Young

People revealed that 13 per cent of 11-14 year old boys and 20 per cent of 11-14 year old girls have vitamin A intakes below the minimum amount needed for good health2 This is worrying as vitamin A is not only necessary for healthy vision but it aids the growth of healthy bones and teeth and is essential for the proper functioning of the immune system.

In addition, carrots are packed with fibre, which helps to keep the digestive system healthy, they balance blood glucose (sugar) levels and keep your child feeling fuller for longer, making carrots a fantastic, healthy snack.

There are so many delicious ways to include carrot in a child’s packed lunch and just half a medium sized carrot counts as one of their 5-A-DAY. Carrot sticks are the obvious accompaniment to your child’s favourite dip and are equally delicious grated into a sandwich to bolster their usual filling of houmous, cheese or tuna mayo but other scrumptious ideas to get your kids eating more carrots are:

• Fill jacket potatoes with a mixture of grated carrot and Red Leicester cheese.• Add grated carrots to salad and toss with all the other ingredients.• Add grated carrots into pasta sauce and serve for lunch as a cold pasta salad.

• If coleslaw is a hit, add extra grated carrot to your regular brand and pot up for lunch.

• Mix mashed carrots with mashed potato, then use to top cottage pie or fish pie.

• If you laid all the carrots grown in the this country in one year end to end they would reach 2.3 million kilometres – that’s two and a half return trips to the moon.

• The orange colour of carrots is caused by pigments called carotenoids, which is where the carrot gets its name. But carrots were not always orange, in 2000 BC the vegetable appeared in a variety of hues including purple, white, red, green, yellow and even black. It wasn’t until the 15th century that the orange carrot was first harvested.

Melt butter over medium heat, add slowly the flour and mix

thoroughly with a wooden spoon until it forms a “ball”. Add slowly the mixture of wine, cream and grated nutmeg. Stir in slowly until it forms a “ball” again.Remove from the heat, add the crab meat, eggs and mix well. Taste and season. Butter and flour a baking pan, divide the mixture with a knife, put flour on your hands and form some small round or oval shaped cakes. Bake in oven for 25 minutes at 180˚C, or test with a knife, when the

blade comes out dry after picking the cakes it’s ready. Keep in fridge for up to 3 days, cooked or uncooked, if covered. To warm up, put in oven on a butter/oiled pan for ten minutes. It’s delicious with a beautiful salad.

This recipe is very popular in my restaurant. If you want, it freezes very well too, but the secret is to de-frost it slowly over night in a fridge.

Sauce A simple and quick way is to use a tin of good bisque. Obviously, it’s better to use some crab shells. This is a

good way to “improve the tinned bisque”

Finely chop a medium onion and three cloves of garlic, fry in little oil; add some thyme and bay leaves and a little brandy or whisky. Flambe. Pour in a small glass of white wine then add to the bisque, let simmer slowly. Add some thick cream, salt and pepper, a little tomato paste if not “red enough” and two drops of Tabasco sauce to give some “bite”.

If the cakes are served on a salad, shape them smaller to avoid wilting the salad. Finally drizzle the sauce over the cakes.Germain Marquis

all the usual garden toys. This means that the lawn is mostly dandelions, beloved by my six year old daughter. And the plants are mostly neglected; not through choice or lack of care you understand, but simply through lack of time. My gardening is, at best, sporadic. Don’t get me wrong, we have done a lot of work in the eight years we have been here.

I was adamant that it was the first ‘room’ in the house we tackled; “because plants take time to grow”. My husband, who had never had a garden of his own, gracefully consented – I had indeed done this before; I knew what I was talking about. I drew up a design, redesigned it, revised it a thousand times and we set too. We ripped out the unwanted, dug like demons and planted our glorious few hundred pounds worth of carefully chosen plants. Unfortunately I learnt very quickly that it can only take misplacement or one

winter to kill them. I have learnt a lot in eight years. I am still learning. I follow my mother, who has a cottage garden unrivalled in her village, like a small chick around show gardens and garden centres; clucking agreement with her sage observations. I am proud of the fact I can identify and properly name a good number of plants; more than Tommy Walsh, less than Mr Titchmarsh, but I still have to learn where to plant them. Oh, I can manage the sun or shade bit fine, I even know my soil types, but I no longer trust the height and spread information on the label, or in the books for that matter. My beds are full of plants that are too small at the back or too long at the front; much to the muttered annoyance of my husband who has to brush past the wet, tied back but still rampant crocosmia every time he walks down the garden to his office after the rain. I was somewhat consoled in this to discover the other weekend that my mother has to do a merry

her with a delightful spray as the whole

thing shudders shut. Outwardly

I nodded my concern,

inwardly I hurrahed!

Being a family garden it has the

obligatory decking. But not just a small patch of B&Q. Oh no, this was a project

months in the planning, minutely

detailed, expertly measured and fine tuned to within a splinter. The great September day dawned when the local timber

arrived. I had planned it to perfection; my husband was now determined to execute its

majesty. Of course nothing is ever simple or straightforward in our Edwardian house. And it is then generally over complicated again by us. We simply don’t do simple. Our garden is on a gentle upward slope. So, not being able to lay a level deck above the ground, we dug away soil to get the right depth and level. Then we dug the holes for the posts from which to suspend the deck. Having figured out how to navigate the immediately discovered filled-in well that is half in our garden, half in next doors, we then had to cut around the drain cover doing the same. We left it beautifully get-at-able should any water authority need access: the fence panel above slides up. Following a subsequent drain blockage we now know beyond any reasonable doubt, verified by whole bottles of food dye, that this particular drain does not appear to carry any water whatsoever from any of the properties in the near vicinity. It is now hidden from view beneath our gas barbeque. But the deck, oh it is a thing of beauty.

I am immensely proud of my design. I am deliriously triumphant in the fact that the sleepers around the edge not only fit together like a perfect giants jigsaw, but that they are just the right height to sit on, as designed; and all that unwanted soil makes a lovely raised bed. But I am most proud of my husband who, desperate to complete it before Christmas finally arrived, finished it off in the rain, with the (non-waterproof, as it turned out) gazebo overhead and the electric screwdriver under a towel. I smile every time I step onto it. It is a triumph of team work. It is covered in ball pit, mini paddling pool, slightly moth eared furniture, wobbly parasol, discarded scooters and a whole host of toys. It serves its purpose perfectly. Which reminds me, it’s time for the midnight dash to collect in all of the ‘indoor’ toys before it rains!

Hampshire Mum's Diary

Friday, early evening. I’m rudely awakened from my holiday wish-fulfilment dream

about a tropical paradise. For a moment we were actually there: the Husband frolicked with Stars I and II in a beautiful azure sea whilst I relaxed in a palm-shaded hammock. The application of various miracle creams meant that I had avoided emerging from ‘Club Class’ looking like a puffer fish; in fact, the family Pagan were a picture of bronzed health and happiness.

“Sandra, come on. We need to pack the car up, I’ve got the tent down from the attic, give us a hand with the rest of the stuff. We’re off camping tomorrow!”

Ah, down to earth with the proverbial bump.

With the Pagan financial belt tightened another notch, coupled with the fact that Hampshire’s coastline is not best known as a surfing paradise, we are bravely to travel westerly over the borders, to a land of myths and mines, pasties and pilchards, sun, sea and… more sun hopefully. To Cornwall, to be precise.

In 1901 T M. Holding Esq, the ‘Father of Modern Camping’,

claimed that a bicycle and a tiny tent were the only requirements for a successful camping holiday. Well sorry, but we Pagans have pandered to the gods of campy consumption to the point of gluttony.

Friday, slightly later: the trusty Renault, doors flung open wide, stands with resigned patience much like a shire horse before being shod, awaiting… the packing.

All the ‘essentials’ for our holiday gleaned from various corners of the house are now in piles on the drive. Beads of perspiration have broken out on the Husband’s top lip as he secures the top box to the car.“We’ll never get this lot in Sandra, do we really need all of this?”

Well of course we do, and so I found myself feeling like James Herriot in reverse aiding the Husband to get all the ‘soft’ stuff into the top box.“Right, pull down hard Sandra, I’ll push this lot back up. It all went in last time.”

With the lock finally secured we attach an additional safety strap around the top box: well, no-one wants their linen, towels and sleeping bags strewn along the A303 for goodness’ sake.

The Renault’s cavernous boot happily accommodates the hard stuff: four tables (excessive perhaps but trust me, you’ll want everything off the ground when it rains and the tent leaks), the stove and accompanying gas bottle, the cool box, chairs and the box which along with all the kitchenalia contains the Holy Grail of camping - the electric hook-up socket. Early morning Earl Grey and night time fairy lights all at the flick of a switch. Marvellous.

It’s still Friday and very nearly dark. I’m instructed to finish packing the boot with the remaining bags of clothes while the Husband, with great ceremony, goes to collect the jewel in the camping crown: the trailer.

As this takes some time, Stars I, II and I seize the opportunity to secrete as many ‘vitals’ as possible into the trusty Renault’s various remaining hiding places. Star II’s copious cuddly toys, Star I’s electronic gadgetry, my sketch book, oh, and although it pushes marital harmony to the very limits, a couple of cushions plus spares of virtually everything.

The Husband doesn’t notice as he’s busy muttering obscenities about the bike rack. Once the bikes are secured, the trusty Renault is manoeuvred into position so that the trailer can be hitched up enabling us (aka me) to simply drive out. On no account must ‘we’ ever find ourselves in a position where we have to reverse. The Husband is adamant about this ever since his embarrassing failed ‘reverse the trailer practice’ episode on Bramdean Common when he was mocked by a small group of Sunday trippers.

Friday…..it’s very late .Our luxury accommodation - the tent - is thrown into the trailer. Fortunately it’s dark now so it makes testing the brake lights and indicators that much easier.

“Right, we’re done. Where’s the booking confirmation for the campsite Sandra?”

“Oh, err …… I think it’s ……in the boot. Shall I pour you a glass of red, love?”

Official rules and regulations:1. Fill out an entry form and return to Bishop’s Sutton Village Hall (BSVH) by September 3, 2010. A written description of your entry and title must accompany your official scarecrow competition entry blank. bsvh reserves the right to refuse a scarecrow entry which we feel may be offensive to the general public.

2. Scarecrows must be built on a 1 1/2 inch square post. When you drop off your scarecrow, BSVH will provide a pipe secured in the ground at your display location for you to insert your post. Only one pipe per entry is supplied. The pipe is approximately 12" - 18" long and can accommodate a 1 1/2 inch square post.

3. Please attach a permanent weatherproof sign on the lower part of your scarecrow stand with the name of your entry.

4. Scarecrows may not touch the ground; and no materials may be put on the ground around or under your scarecrow.

5. IMPORTANT: Your scarecrow must be weather-resistant & sturdy in order to qualify for displaying and judging. Consider the wind and rain when choosing and securing materials to your creation. We strongly encourage entrants to visit their creations in the village often for periodic check-ups. During the time your entry is on display you may make any necessary repairs. BSVH reserves the right to remove any scarecrows that do not hold up to the weather.

6. NO PERISHABLE GOODS may be used in the construction of your scarecrow (i.e., pumpkins, squash, etc.).

7. BSVH committee is NOT RESPONSIBLE for the security of the scarecrows on display.

8. Your scarecrow must be brought to the Village Hall on Sunday, September 5, between the hours of noon and 2 pm for check-in and set-up. No early crows. village representatives will be at the village hall to give you your official entry number and scarecrow location. Scarecrows will be on display until Sunday, October 24, 2010.

10. The public may vote for their favourites THE FIRST THREE WEEKS of the contest. Winners will be announced and posted on our website by Saturday, October 2. Prizes will be posted the week of October 25, 2010.

11. Scarecrows must be picked up Sunday, October 24 between 5 and 6 pm. Any scarecrows that are not claimed and whose creator(s) have not arranged for alternative pick-up by November 1 will become the property of BSVH.

12. BSVH committee reserves the right to photograph entries for any promotional purpose. Photographs become the property of BSVH committee.

13. Scarecrow contestants who take their entries are taken off the property prior to the close of the display or remove their entries for promotional purposes during the display without expressed written permission from BSVH will forfeit their prizes and titles and not be allowed to enter future scarecrow competitions.

As the Pakistan floods wreak havoc, it’s a serious reminder of one of

the great British inventions, now being shipped in thousands to the devastated area.

ShelterBox was founded by Tom Henderson, a Rotarian and former Royal Navy search and rescue diver. He saw that the aid response to most disasters was in the form of food and medicine to help people survive the immediate aftermath. Little or no assistance was given in terms of proper shelter to help them through the first few days, weeks and months as they tried to rebuild their lives. ShelterBox was launched to fill that void.In 1999, Tom started researching the idea, sourcing equipment and twisting arms to get the project off the ground. His persistence paid off in April 2000 when ShelterBox was launched and the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in Cornwall adopted it as its millennium project. Little did they know that it

would become the largest Rotary club project in the world, with affiliates in ten countries.

Each box supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless. The contents are tailored depending on the nature and location of the disaster, with great care taken sourcing every item to ensure it is robust enough to be of lasting value.

Only new equipment is used and is carefully selected for durability, practicality and suitability for where it is needed. Tough, lightweight and waterproof, the box itself can also have many useful functions from food container to cot. A wide range of equipment is kept in stock in Cornwall. This allows for the contents of the box to be varied according to local conditions and what is most urgently needed. Sometimes, particularly if other resources are available locally, and the overwhelming need is for shelter we will just send tents and pack two

Each box costs an average of £490 including all materials, packing, storage and distribution to individual recipients worldwide. Based on six months use only this equates to 27 pence per person per day.

Alresford Rotary has consistently supported ShelterBox and through the years has sent boxes to many places, including Burma, Bangladesh, China, Jamaica, Gaza and Pakistan. After the tsunami struck on December 26th 2004, we pitched a ShelterBox tent and equipment in Broad Street and for those who missed the chance – we will be showing the equipment again at the Alresford Show.
