I have been working as a freelance designer since 1993, at first

mainly in the context of experimental and electronic music, later

on in sports and (pop) culture.

My original background is pre-press and print production –

I started to work at a newspaper, did the concept and design of

several other periodicals, and held a part-time job in pre-press

for several years –; from 2000 on I‘ve been working with non-

print media as well. Today, a lot of my work regardless of medium

incorporates a mix of screen, print, and generative techniques.

Most of my published work is CD and vinyl packaging, but

I’m also doing promotional material like posters and flyers,

catalogues, periodicals, books, and non-print formats such as

realtime applications and web design. The less visible part

of it spans print production and production management,

proofreading, text editing and translations, and conceptual

assistance – often up to the point where a client—contractor

relationship evolves into a truly collaborative work.

qi.tv published experimental moving image formats, not linear movies in the classical sense, and I wanted the logo to reflect that: instead of one static version, I generated random variations based on an old QuickDraw application of mine.

The DVDs came in two formats, one of them a burn-to-order series: in order to avoid having to print a different on-body for each release, the DVDs carry a uniform binary matrix; the serial number of each one is edited out by hand with a black marker. This code is repeated on the backside of the inlay card.

Design concept for the visual identity of a small record label in Berlin: letterhead, stamps and signs, CD and vinyl packag-ing, posters, website, and a moving image application.

The design is based on a series of geometrical patterns, featuring photos and text on labels and inlaycards. The idea behind this is to reclaim the basic function of a cover as packaging material (as opposed to self-advert ising space); photos are treated as part of the content alongside music and text.

This is a series of remixes, made from tiny snippets of sound – the designs are remixes of the Full Swing EP and based on the same principle. I generated a series of variations using the screen interference as remix engine and applying details of the image itself as halftone patterns (instead of regular autotypical screening).

In a way, the results are the digital equivalent of analog copy art, where a detail of an original is enlarged over and over again until the traces of this process itself become the image.

Einleitung

Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts hier das Städtische Museumein Domizil, das vor allem für seine Sammlung expressio-nistischer Kunst bekannt war. Auch heute versteht sich dieStaatliche Galerie Moritzburg als ein Museum, das aktu-elle Phänomene in eine spannende Verbindung zu seinerGeschichte und zu der des Bauwerkes setzt. Der unweit von Halle geborenen Dichter Novalis, dessen 200.Todestagdas Land Sachsen-Anhalt im kommenden Jahr begeht,hatte die Vision, Wissenschaft, Philosophie und Kunst inder Poesie als höchste Form der Erkenntnis zu vereinen.Auch heute bleibt es spannend, welche Visionen die Be-rührung von Kunst und Wissenschaft und die Begegnungvon Historie und Moderne hervorbringen.

Das Ludwig Forum in Aachen hat sich als Mehrsparten-haus programmatisch der Aufgabe gewidmet, ein mög-lichst umfassendes Panorama geistiger Kreativität der ak-tuellen Zeitgeschichte zu präsentieren.

Heute prägen mehr denn je Lösungen und Problem-stellungen der Wissenschaft das aktuelle Bewußtsein, dasVisionen entwickelt und auf konkrete Fortschritte hofft.Aachen ist in diesem Zusammenhang ein idealer Standortfür eine Ausstellung zum Thema Kunst und Wissenschaft.Das Ludwig Forum mit seiner fachübergreifenden, grenz-überschreitenden Programmatik befindet sich im Zentrumeiner Region, die von zahlreichen Universitäten und For-schungsinstituten geprägt ist.

Das Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karls-ruhe (ZKM) ist von Anfang an als ein Museum aller Gat-tungen und Medien konzipiert gewesen. Seit zwei Jahren wird daran gearbeitet, das ZKM zusätzlich zu diesen museo-logischen Aufgaben in ein Kompetenzzentrum für medien-technische Entwicklung und Forschung zu verwandeln. Mitneuen Abteilungen wie den Instituten für Netzentwicklungund für Grundlagenforschung, zusammen mit dem bereitsbestehenden Institut für Musik und Akustik und dem In-stitut für Bildmedien bildet das ZKM ein interdisziplinäresForum für die Weiterentwicklung der Konvergenz von Kunstund Medien. Es versteht sich beinahe von selbst, daß einAllianzpartner in diesem Kontext die Wissenschaft ist. Umso erfreulicher ist, daß auch die Wirtschaft den Zusammen-hang zwischen Wissenschaft und Kunst anerkennt und das Thema der ars viva 2000 auf die Begegnung von Kunstund Wissenschaft ausgerichtet hat.

Für die künstlerische Praxis von Natascha Sadr Haghighianist es nicht überraschend, daß sie die Präsentation vor der Jury des Kulturkreises gleich als einen Teil eines künst-lerischen Projektes inszenierte – denn die eigene Identitätwird bei ihr häufig explizit zu künstlerischem Material.

Jeanette Schulz beschäftigt sich mit verschiedenen wissen-schaftlichen Disziplinen. Seit 1995 arbeitet sie eng mitWissenschaftlern aus den Gebieten Entwicklungsbiologie,Neurophysiologie und Emotionsforschung zusammen. Ihre Forschungserkenntnisse überträgt sie in großformatigeSchautafeln, Comics und Zeichnungen. Die „TheoretischenObjekte“, mit denen sie komplexe Denkmodelle teilweisesehr humorvoll visualisiert, finden auch in der Lehre undim direkten Kontakt mit Patienten Anwendung.

In vielen ihrer Arbeiten entsteht das, was sie wiederumin einer eigenen Arbeit als „Loop“ bezeichnet: der Rück-verweis einer künstlerischen Formulierung auf ihren eigenenkognitiven Entstehungsprozeß; eine Arbeit verweist auf ein kognitives Phänomen, das in der Darstellung des Phäno-mens selbst wiederum nachvollzogen wird. Der Verweis istin Jeanette Schulz’ Arbeit überhaupt ein wichtiges Prinzip:viele ihrer Arbeiten durchlaufen die unterschiedlichstenStadien. Häufig ist der Ausgangspunkt eine Mnemoskizze,die dann zu einem Comic, einem „Theoretischen Objekt“ausgearbeitet wird, wovon wiederum möglicherweise Trai-ningsmaterial für den therapeutischen Einsatz abgeleitetwird. Dieses Prinzip wird im Katalogbeitrag von JeanetteSchulz, für den der Designer Walter Pamminger ein gra-phisches Konzept entwickelt hat, veranschaulicht: er hebtdie Linearität, der ein Buch für gewöhnlich unterworfen ist, auf zugunsten eines „freien Navigierens“ über ein ver-zweigtes Assoziationsfeld.

Die Künstler der ars viva 00/01 stehen vor der Aufgabe,sich in Halle, Aachen und Karlsruhe mit Orten sehr unter-schiedlichen Charakters zu arrangieren. Gemeinsam istallen drei Orten die enge Verbindung zu Kunst und Wissen-schaft:

Die Moritzburg in Halle, der Ort der heutigen Staat-lichen Galerie, wurde im 18. Jahrhundert, als die Wissen-schaften ihren Aufschwung nahmen, als geeignetes Ge-bäude für die Hallesche Universität in den Blick genommen.Von Karl Friedrich Schinkel gab es bereits erste Überle-gungen und Entwürfe für einen Umbau, bevor dann docheinem Neubau der Vorzug gegeben wurde. So fand zu

einen immer gleichen Punkt. 1995 meldete Christoph Kellerfür seine Konstruktion ein Patent an. Auf diese Weise gaber seinem Projekt eine juristische Realität und machte somitdeutlich, daß er sich nicht auf den Topos der Künstler-Uto-pie beschränken will.

In mehreren Arbeiten beschäftigt sich Christoph Kellermit Archiven. In seiner Arbeit medfilm – eine filmischeGeschichte der Charité 1900–1990 untersucht er medizi-nische Lehrfilme, die im Verlauf des Jahrhunderts an derCharité entstanden sind. Im ars viva-Katalog zeigt er diezum Teil daran anknüpfende Arbeit „Lost/Unfound: Ar-chives as Objects as Monuments“. In einer Art assoziativemLexikon thematisiert er geistesgeschichtliche und ideo-logische Implikationen des Umgangs mit dem dokumentari-schen Bild. Sein Alphabet umfaßt Begriffe von Animationüber Genom bis Zoo und Zufall. Das lexikalische Verspre-chen der Begriffserklärung wird bewußt nicht eingelöst.DieBegriffe bilden Überschriften für die assoziative Zusammen-stellung unterschiedlichster Quellen. Stills aus Dokumen-tarfilmen werden kombiniert mit Bildern von Archiv-Archi-tekturen, geschichtsphilosophische Zitate mit Interview-Fragmenten. Der aufsteigend alphabetischen Reihenfolgewird eine absteigend chronologische Ordnung der Film-dokumente entgegengesetzt. In diesem strengen formalenRaster formiert sich das Material zu einem einzigen Denk-raum.

Natascha Sadr Haghighians künstlerische Praxis ist formalund stilistisch schwer einzugrenzen: ihr „Repertoire“ um-faßt Videos und Performances genauso wie (Klang-)Instal-lationen, CD-ROMs, Comics, Computer-Animationen undDokumentarfilme. Ihr wiederholt angewandtes Prinzip istdas Einnehmen und Herausheben unterschiedlicherBetrachterstandpunkte. Sie zerlegt Bildzusammenhänge,fokussiert einzelne Elemente, legt Blickachsen frei undversucht dabei, die Bedingungen des Zustandekommensdes Bildmaterials mitaufzuzeigen. Häufig rekombiniert sie das so gewonnene Material und schafft Überlagerungen.Dieses Vorgehen gilt nicht nur für die visuelle Ebene: ImRahmen der Ausstellung „La Ville, la Mémoire, le Jardin“schuf sie im Garten der Villa Medici eine Klanginstallation.Sie nahm die nächtliche Geräuschkulisse des Parks auf, um ausgewählte Fragmente über Lautsprecher, die fast un-bemerkt in den Bäumen hingen, tagsüber abzuspielen.Diese subtile Intervention führte zu einer deutlich spür-baren Realitätsverschiebung.

Dieser Ausspruch Marcel Duchamps trägt einen „Erlösungs-gedanken“ in sich, der für das heutige Verhältnis von Kunstund Wissenschaft sicherlich keine ungebrochene Gültig-keit hat. Weder beansprucht die Kunst, ihrerseits das letzteWort zu haben, noch lehnt die Wissenschaft ab, sich vonkünstlerischen Vorgehensweisen anregen zu lassen. Einewichtige Aufgabe der Kunst ist es allerdings nach wie vor, Entwicklungen in der Wissenschaft wie auch in ande-ren gesellschaftlichen Bereichen kritisch zu verfolgen.

Bei der ars viva 00/01 – Kunst und Wissenschaft werdenvor allem Künstler vorgestellt, die sich in ihrer Arbeit mitdem Verhältnis von Kunst und Wissenschaft beschäftigen.

Hörner/Antlfinger untersuchen Prozesse medialen Wandels.Im Mittelpunkt ihrer Analysen stehen Veränderungen desArbeitsbegriffs und der Kommunikation unter dem Einflußder Computertechnologien. Sie verbinden medientheore-tische Ansätze mit digitalem Know-how und plazieren ihreÜberlegungen in gestalterisch „analogen“, häufig derKindheit entlehnten Bildwelten: in der Installation „Schnee-wittchen und Zwerge“ zum Beispiel wird das Verhältnis von Kunst und elektronischen Medien thematisiert. Ein vonHörner/Antlfinger sorgfältigst geschneidertes Schneewitt-chen gewährt den sieben Zwergen, die auf antiquiertenMonitoren leben, unter seinem Gewand großzügig Unter-schlupf. Die Zwerge erweisen sich als Personifikationen der„artes liberales“: auf Knopfdruck demonstrieren sie ihreKompetenzen und empfehlen sich als digital reformier-bare Wesen. Auch die im Rahmen der ars viva entworfeneArbeit „I Want to Believe. Gebirgszelt mit schlafendemYeti“ spitzt die Verbindung von medientheoretischen undhumoristisch-fiktionalen Strängen zu: Hörner/Antlfingerrichten hier einen Meditationsraum für Avatare ein. Diebei Internet-Chats zugelegten fiktiven Identitäten führen – einmal zum Leben erweckt – bei Hörner/Antlfinger ihreExistenz im Netz unabhängig fort. Als Ausgleich für dievon Chats überstrapazierten Avatare initiieren sie einenOrt, an dem geschwiegen werden darf.

Christoph Keller arbeitet mit unterschiedlichen Medien inverschiedenen Zusammenhängen. Dennoch ist sein pri-märes Bezugssystem die Kunst; 1993 entwickelte ChristophKeller eine Spiegelkonstruktion, die Sonnenlicht in ver-schattete Hinterhöfe projiziert. Der Sonnenspiegel, der Ähn-lichkeit mit einer Satellitenschüssel hat, richtet sich nachdem Lauf der Sonne aus und projiziert ihre Strahlen auf

„Kunst ist das einzige, was Menschen übrig bleibt, die derWissenschaft nicht das letzte Wort überlassen wollen“.

Wir freuen uns, mit der ars viva – Kunst und Wissenschaftin Häusern zu Gast zu sein, in denen das diesjährigeThema sehr gut aufgehoben ist: in der Staatlichen GalerieMoritzburg Halle aufgrund der bedeutenden universitärenTradition der Stadt Halle, im Ludwig Forum Aachen als einHaus mit einer interdisziplinären Programmatik an einemwichtigen Standort wissenschaftlicher und technologi-scher Forschung und schließlich im Zentrum für Kunst undMedientechnologie Karlsruhe, das nicht nur ein Ausstel-lungsort ist, sondern auch eine Forschungs- und Aus-bildungseinrichtung internationalen Formats, die künst-lerische und zukunftstechnologische Fragestellungenverknüpft.

Für die gute Zusammenarbeit möchten wir den Preis-trägern, den Kuratoren und allen anderen hilfreich Be-teiligten danken. Wir wünschen der ars viva – Kunst undWissenschaft eine große Resonanz und freuen uns aufinteressante Diskussionen.

In diesem Jahr widmet sich die ars viva dem Thema „Kunstund Wissenschaft“. Mit diesem inhaltlich-thematischenFokus bei der Auswahl der Preisträger wird weitergeführt,was bereits in den beiden vergangenen Jahren mit der ars viva – Installationen und der ars viva – Grenzgängeeingeleitet wurde: die Ablösung von einem gattungsspe-zifischen Auswahlkriterium, wie etwa Malerei oder Skulptur,hin zu einer thematischen Klammer. Mit dieser Verschie-bung wird der Tendenz Rechnung getragen, daß sich Künstler der jüngeren Generation nur noch selten auf eine Gattung festlegen lassen; daß sie vielmehr die unterschiedlichsten Formen und Medien als Träger ihrerIdeen wählen.

Das Thema dient in erster Linie als „Suchbegriff“, umsich Positionen der aktuellen Kunst zu nähern. Es kannnicht der Anspruch der ars viva sein, einen exemplarischenÜberblick zum künstlerischen Schaffen zum Thema „Wis-senschaft“ zu geben.

Zur Diskussion standen junge Künstlerinnen und Künst-ler, die sich in ihrer Arbeit auf unterschiedliche Weise mitBereichen der Wissenschaft beschäftigen. Dabei reichtedas Spektrum von künstlerischen Auseinandersetzungenmit spezifischen Forschungsinhalten über künstlerischeAnsätze, in denen wissenschaftliche Methoden im Vorder-grund stehen, hin zu Positionen, die das Verhältnis vonKunst und Wissenschaft reflektieren.

Aus insgesamt 63 Vorschlägen von Kuratoren, Kritikernund Künstlern hat die Jury in diesem Jahr folgende Preis-träger bestimmt: Hörner/Antlfinger (Düsseldorf), ChristophKeller (Berlin), Natascha Sadr Haghighian (Berlin) undJeanette Schulz (Bremen/Wien).

Die Jury setzte sich zusammen aus den Mitgliedern desGremiums Bildende Kunst des Kulturkreises Helmut vonAchten, Till Casper, Karin Heyl, Britta Hueck-Ehmer, Klaus-Peter Kienitz, Ludger Hünnekens, Andra Lauffs-Wegner,Bernhard Freiherr von Loeffelholz, Eberhard Mayntz, ArendOetker, Isabel Podeschwa, Ulrich Sauerwein, Moi Soltek,Michael Tacke, Thomas Timmermanns, den Kuratoren derdrei ars viva-Stationen Annette Lagler (Ludwig Forum fürInternationale Kunst, Aachen), Katja Schneider (StaatlicheGalerie Moritzburg Halle) und Peter Weibel (ZKM Zentrumfür Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe) sowie demfreien Kurator Hans Ulrich Obrist, der sich seit einigenJahren intensiv mit der Schnittstelle von Kunst und Wissen-schaft befaßt.
