Communities In Schools http://cislv.org/ is the nation’s largest dropout prevention organization bringing coordinated, integrated student services into public schools to meet the needs of at-risk students. Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. To help our students achieve their greatest successes, we determine students’ needs and establish relationships with local businesses, social service agencies, health care providers, and parent and volunteer organizations to provide needed resources. Community resources provide the substance to our “Five Basics” model that has allowed our students to flourish over the last 35 years. Cities In Schools of Bethlehem opened its doors in 1983 and after name changes and expansions became Communities In Schools of the Lehigh Valley in 1994. Since then, the agency has provided site coordinators and integrated student services to schools, provided alternative education support services, student health initiatives, career services, after-school and summer programs, and support services to young fathers. Our goal continues to be the same: to stop the drop out epidemic and provide every opportunity to help kids graduate from high school. Communities In Schools of the Lehigh Valley is focused on helping children build the best life they can by helping them overcome obstacles. Every child is unique and requires and individualized approach in order to succeed. Whether a child needs extra academic help, a mentor, a health check-up, additional food supplies, or even employment training, Communities In Schools of the Lehigh Valley is there to make sure that all children get exactly what they need. Communities In Schools of the Lehigh Valley provides programming before, during, and after school to over 15,000 students kindergarten through community college in nineteen schools located in the following school districts: •Allentown School District •Bethlehem Area School District •Easton Area School District •Whitehall Coplay School District •Reading School District In these districts, CIS of the Lehigh Valley has a multitude of programs, including:

Integrated Student Supports (ISS) At several of our schools, we have site coordinators in place who leverage community resources to meet the needs of students and their families. Site coordinators provide support services, life skills development, targeted interventions, basic resources, before and after school programs, and opportunities for parent engagement. CIS of the Lehigh Valley provides these types of resources and services to the following schools: •Calypso Elementary School, Bethlehem •Lincoln Elementary School, Bethlehem •Cheston Elementary School, Easton •Easton Area Middle School, Easton •Easton Area High School, Easton •Harrison Morton Middle School, Allentown •South Mountain Middle School, Allentown •Trexler Middle School, Allentown •Louis E. Dieruff High School, Allentown •William Allen High School, Allentown •Reading Intermediate High School, Reading •Whitehall High School, Whitehall-Coplay Due to issues with behavior, academic performance, and attendance, some students need individualized support through alternative education programs. CIS of the Lehigh Valley offers administrative leadership and staff to local alternative education sites. Alternative Education for Disruptive Youth (AEDY) is designed to provide specialized intensive support—including individualized programming, brokered resources, case management, truancy intervention, behavior modification, parent engagement activities, and at least 2.5 hours of counseling per week—that can help students succeed and often return to their home schools. CIS of the Lehigh Valley provides these kinds of services at the following sites: •Alternative Learning Center, grades 6-8, Allentown •Easton Area Academy, grades 6-12, Easton •William Penn Alternative Education, grades 9-12, Allentown Additionally, CIS provides specialized support services to schools with specific needs. For example, a Family Liaison at Paxinosa Elementary School in Easton serves to facilitate family engagement by developing relationships between school district staff, students, and parents. Out of School Time (OST) CIS of the Lehigh Valley provides afterschool programming for elementary and middle school students at three 21st Century Community Learning Center sites. The programs meet four days per week for three hours a day and target students with documented academic needs. Students are provided with academic intervention focused on math, reading, and enrichment activities that build on core instructional learning. These programs are all led by certified teachers. Students also benefit from homework help and tutoring. Free afternoon snacks and dinners are available daily. CIS of the Lehigh Valley works with school districts to ensure that there transportation home is provided for all participating students. Family engagement activities including literacy classes, newsletters, and activities

with families are integral components of the programs, as well. Collaboration with community partners provide students with STEAM enrichment and college students from higher education partners are utilized as mentors. Our OST sites include: •Cleveland Elementary School, Allentown •Washington Elementary School, Allentown •South Mountain Middle School, Allentown •Trexler Middle School •Harrison-Morton Middle School •Raub Middle School •Dieruff High School •William Allen High School •Easton Middle School 5/6 and 7/8 College & Career Readiness CIS of the Lehigh Valley offers Career Services, a job readiness/awareness program for low income high school students. The voluntary program provides students with case management, including guidance in resume, cover letter, and thank you letter writing; job application skills; interviewing etiquette, and job shadowing experiences. This program is offered at the following sites: •Easton Area High School, grades 9-12, Easton •Whitehall High School, grades 10-12, Whitehall •William Penn Alternative Education, grades 9-10, Allentown The Education Leading to Employment and Career Training Initiative was created to expand the services of existing teen parent programs and provide support services to students who meet the income eligibility requirements. The program is voluntary and students are followed until graduation or age 22. CIS of the Lehigh Valley has collaborated with ELECT since 2001 and uniquely targets fathers through the ELECT Fatherhood Initiative. Fifteen to twenty-five fathers are provided with intensive case management, home visits, parenting skill support, and job readiness training each school year. This program is available to students at the following sites: •Harrison-Morton Middle School, Allentown •Raub Middle School, Allentown •South Mountain Middle School, Allentown •Trexler Middle School, Allentown •William Allen High School, Allentown •Louis E. Dieruff High School, Allentown •William Penn Alternative Education, Allentown CIS of the Lehigh Valley also manages a College Bound program at Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC). Through this program, a program coordinator works with fifty students each year who have graduated from Allentown School District, ensuring that they stay focused on their education and earn their degrees. Students are also paired with mentors and given assistance transitioning from college to the workforce.

Re-Engagement In partnership with the Allentown School District and the Workforce Investment Board, CIS operates a dropout reengagement center. The Allentown ReEngagement Center–one of few in the nation–is designed to bring students who have dropped out of school back into an educational setting so they can earn their diploma or GED. The Allentown ReEngagement Center takes students both by referral and walk-in. Staff at the center review transcripts and help each student craft an individualized graduation plan. Students either re-enroll at their home school or enroll in an alternative program that better suits their needs. Staff continuously provides case-managed support to students, keeping them on track to graduate.
