INSURGENT USE OF IEDS IN THE ASYMMETRIC BATTLEFIELD

In the asymmetric battlefield of the 21st century, military combat vehicle crews face numerous lethal hazards which are complex and constantly evolving. Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), mines and enemy fire are examples of such persistent and variable threats. Historically, measures taken to mitigate these hazards focused largely on up-armoring the vehicle body. As vehicles reach their maximum load capacity and the insurgent threat continues

to escalate, the focus has shifted to safeguarding the vehicle occupants from an ever-broadening range of threats.

THE THREAT

The threat to deployed forces by insurgent and enemy use of the Radio Frequency (RF) Spectrum has become omnipresent and the Radio-Controlled IED (RCIED) has emerged as the insurgents’ weapon of choice. IEDs are responsible for more deaths and injuries in the asymmetric battlefield than any other weapons system.

An IED BLAST event presents a potentially lethal threat to vehicle crews who must be protected from both phases of a blast event: the initial upward acceleration, followed by a

‘slam-down’ to the ground, potentially into a significant crater and likely without the benefit of the vehicle’s suspension.

The HEAT generated and trapped inside an armored vehicle can exceed 65° C (150° F), overwhelming most conventional cooling capabilities. Extreme heat can jeopardize the mission through electronics failure and can cause loss of focus and heat stress or potentially fatal injury for vehicle occupants.

BLAST ATTENUATION SEATS

Ground combat vehicles face blast threats from roadside bombs, mines, and RPGs. Although design improvements and armour have increased vehicle protection, extensive live testing with leading military research agencies has demonstrated that Blast Attenuation Seats are critical to increasing crew survivability.

Allen Vanguard is a world leader in delivering ‘attenuation’ seats which

absorb the energy generated by higher level blasts. Using an innovative Recoverable Attenuation System (RAS), Allen Vanguard seats dissipate energy during both the upwards acceleration and downwards ‘slam-down’ phases of the blast event.

Seats can be provided with an integrated foot rest or stand alone Foot Pads which further isolate the occupant

caused by a blast event.

Allen Vanguard’s battle-proven blast seats are compatible with a wide range of combat vehicles as both commercial off the shelf configurations or as customized solutions designed to meet specific program requirements. Tested to meet NATO standards (STANAG 4569), Allen Vanguard’s Commander, Driver and Troop/Crew seats can be integrated into new platform builds or retrofitted into existing tracked or wheeled ground vehicle fleets.

Heat is a serious health threat within military armored vehicles where the air temperature can exceed 150°F (66°C), compounded by high humidity. Allen Vanguard provides customized configurations of Thermal Management Systems specifically engineered for the confined spaces and the harsh environments military combat vehicles

and their occupants are exposed to. The Micro Climate Systems eliminate the severe heat that affects both the vehicle’s electronics and its crew.

EQUINOX™ is Allen Vanguards’ latest technology platform designed to counter the pervasive threat of Radio Controlled IED’s. However, EQUINOX™ has been designed with far greater applicability in mind.

Standard protocols and connections allow the system to be easily integrated with other C4I assets such as a combat or homeland security data and/or radio networks.

The open-standard protocols, connections and operating systems allow for government or third-party integration. Allen Vanguard also provides full integration as a solutions service.

The architecture allows for remote upload and download of mission profiles, system status logs and applications. A scalable design offers the user the ability to distribute the system around a vehicle platform with

simple, single cable “daisy-chain” connectivity. Each Transceiver Module is a standalone capability which can be configured in line with individual user requirements.

EQUINOX™ is not just a Counter-RCIED ECM system. It provides the user maximum flexibility to exploit and dominate the RF spectrum now and well into the future.

Allen Vanguard’s helmet and vehicle mounted sensors are an important breakthrough in the effort to improve mounted and dismounted troop survivability by collecting and quantifying real-time, in-theatre blast event data. The sensor technology can be mounted in and around a vehicle or inside a soldier’s helmet. Each of

these self-sustaining units detects, measures and records accelerations and overpressure from blast events on a vehicle or soldier. Data captured during blast events allows survivability engineers and the medical community to better characterize exposure to impact trauma and blast incidents, potentially leading to improved vehicle
