What is the need for a Dental Crown?

A Dental Crown is needed in the following circumstances :

For protecting a weak tooth from breaking For holding together parts of a cracked

tooth from further breaking For restoring a broken or a severely worn

out tooth For covering and supporting a tooth with a

large filling with not much of the tooth left For holding a dental bridge in place For covering a dental implant For making a cosmetic modification

What types of Crowns are available ?

Crowns are made from different types of materials like metal, alloy, porcelain, ceramic etc. Dentists suggest the type of crown as per a patient’s need. Following types of crowns are available :

Metal Crowns – These are made of gold, generally last long without chipping or breaking, and do not wear down your opposing natural teeth. But the gold color does not look natural on front teeth. Composite Crowns – These look natural, and do not chip as easily as porcelain crowns. They have a lesser life as they wear from chewing and the polished surface stains even with brushing teeth. Porcelain Crowns – Although these look most natural, but are brittle and chip easily. Hence these are not placed on back teeth. Porcelain-fused-to-metal Crowns – These are stronger than the porcelain or composite ones, and also look quite natural. They also do not chip as easily as others.

What care is needed for temporary crowns?

General care is needed for temporary crowns so that they do not come out or damage the effected tooth. Following precautions may be taken :

Avoid sticky food like chocolates, caramel or chewing gum

Minimize use of side of your mouth Avoid chewing hard food like raw vegetables, peanuts
