A White Paper By Kobi Mann,Director of Application & Consumables Products, Kornit Digital

The global textile printing industry is rapidly joining the “Detox” campaign calling on textile and garment manufacturers to eliminate toxic and harmful chemicals from the supply chain by 2020. Leading global brands such as Adidas, UNITED COLORS OF BENETTON, Burberry, H&M, ESPRIT, Valentino and others have already signed the petition, thus committing to detox their apparel. Other major companies will soon follow. Thus, it’s only a matter of time before printers and their clients around the world will be required to adhere to detox standards. Many have already moved to digital printing – a viable option in terms of the environment, cost-efficiency and quality. In this vein, it’s critical that textile producers and manufacturers learn the relevant health and safety requirements to ensure their products comply; they cannot afford to lag behind in this global revolution.

This white paper details the environmental hazards prevalent in the textile industry, the global move toward sustainable industry standards, and how you can ensure your company’s compliance as well as continued success and profitability.

the Detox Revolution

Greenpeace and other environmental lobby groups have succeeded in changing regulations around the world. For the first time in the EU, several harmful chemicals have been added to the list of toxic substances to be phased out and replaced with substitutes. In Indonesia, the use of NPE hormone-disrupting chemicals will be regulated and monitored. Similarly, in China harmful chemicals including PFCs and nonylephenols are now being regulated thanks to their inclusion in the ‘”12th Five Year Plan for the Prevention and Control of Environmental Risk of Chemicals.” This is only the beginning.

“Detox”: Already an Industry Standard

The trend is clear: health and safety regulations are evolving in Asia and full market standardization in the region is imminent. In response, some global brands are moving manufacturing back home.

Using toxic chemicals constitutes "a PR disaster"

The EU and USA led the enactment and enforcement of regulations relating to environmental and consumer safety in textile manufacturing, and industry leaders have been actively implementing them. Soon after, Japan joined this movement, with a law restricting formaldehyde content in all household products. In the past few years, under pressure from consumers to comply with standards accepted elsewhere in the world, additional Asian countries have drafted or established safety regulations for textiles and clothing.

In light of this increasingly regulated environment, many companies in the textile and apparel supply chain are proactively working to ensure their products are free of restricted substances. They subsequently receive relevant certifications; these provide assurances that printing on their textiles and garments will not involve hazardous substances and deem their products safe and sellable everywhere.
