Changing Places, Coastal Systems and
Landscapes and Global Systems and Governance.

There are 2 exams and one piece of coursework
which make up this qualification.
Paper 1 (worth 40%) is on Physical Geography
and examines Water and Carbon Cycles, Hazards
and Coastal Systems and Landscapes.
Paper 2 (worth 40%) is on Human Geography
and examines Changing Places, Global Systems
and Governance and Population and the
Environment.
The final 20% of the A Level is an individual 3 –
4,000 word fieldwork investigation based on any
aspect of the syllabus. We have a 3 day
residential in Aberystwyth in Year 2 which is used
by students to collect data for this personal study
on such themes as media and experience, sand
dune ecology and the impacts of migration.
Personal Qualities
Those choosing Geography need to be highly
motivated to learn more about the world around
them, this will take the form of wider reading,
research and keeping abreast of current affairs.
Geographers need to be highly literate as well as
be in possession of strong Maths skills as there is
complex statistical work in both the exams and the
independent investigation. Alongside this we hope
for confident independent learners who are highly
organised.
Career Prospects
Every year a number of our young people follow
their A Level with an undergraduate degree in
Geography as the discipline is recognised for the
breadth of skills required to master the queen of
the sciences. There are jobs in conservation and
the environment, business and finance,
accountancy, urban planning, law and teaching
among many other potential career paths.
