Mrs Morris and the P&C were delighted to receive a cheque from the NSW Teachers Federation (NSWTF) for the sum of $350, which has been awarded to the school under the NSWTF’s Tree Levy scheme. The scheme 'aims to offset the environmental impact of the union's activities via a notional levy on the paper used by the Federation,' by funding the purchase of native trees and native shrubs for public school grounds. Mrs Morris would like to thank NSW Teachers Federation as well as Fiona Slade for her assistance with preparing the grant application. We look forward to seeing the funds used to rejuvenate the gardens along David Street. Thanks Mrs Morris.

K-2 Students will form an appreciative audience for a visiting string quartet from Sydney Conservatorium of Music this Friday 30 November. This free opportunity will allow these lucky students to consolidate much of the learning around orchestra and instrument families that they have undertaken in Music studies this year. It will be amazing to see each of the string instruments up close and hear the blend of low and high sounds used in music compositions performed on the day. Kindergarten students will attend their free session at 10 am in the hall, while Years 1 and 2 will attend the following session at 10:30. We would like to thank the Murray Conservatorium and Mrs Morris for organising this experience for our students.

Tomorrow, Thursday, is Movember day at Albury Public School. A reminder to those who wish to participate to wear or draw on a mo and bring a gold coin donation. Some mo goodies will also be on sale tomorrow for you to enjoy.

Thanks to the parents/carers who have already registered their interest in coffee and cake next Thursday, 6 December. The session will commence at 10:00am and will be in the VC room near 3LB classroom (The Lodge). We will kick off the session with a presentation on NAPLAN and our school’s results. The aim of the session is to look at our school plan, 2018 progress and feedback to inform 2019 Today, our team of 7 staff continued training in Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL). Implementation of PBL has already started in the school but the staff is being trained as we develop the behaviour expectations and put structures into place to support student learning. Examples of these structures include clearly describing what being prepared for learning looks like (having a pencil, equipment ready, etc), setting learning goals and expectations (what students hope to learn/achieve by the end of the year) and teaching rules and routines to students, followed by teaching and reinforcing them consistently throughout the year to increase student academic achievement and task engagement. Teachers and School Support Officers are very excited about the implementation of PBL as it gives the school and community a shared language and expectations of behaviour and learning. As we continue to implement PBL as a school community we will identify the values that best describe our aim and goals at Albury Public School.

Earlier this term a survey was conducted in consultation with the P&C to determine the opinion of the school community about the school creed. Thank you to all who were able to participate. The results of the first 100 of these responses indicated that:

the majority of respondents are in favour of APS having a creed (Yes - 57%, No - 24%, Let the Children Vote - 16%, Don’t Know - 3%)

the majority (65%) of respondents are in favour of changing the creed with 37% of respondents preferring the example creed provided, 24% preferring a new creed written by students and 4% preferring a new creed written in consultation with parents compared to 35% in favour of keeping the current creed.

The comments provided indicated that the school community would prefer that a creed is tied to practised school values and should have meaning and significance for all students. The primary reasons given for changing the creed were to promote inclusivity and diversity, to remove reference to God/religion; and to remove the word ‘mankind’. The primary reasons given by those who indicated a preference to keep the current creed were that it promoted good moral values and that changing the creed would threaten/not align with these values. In response to these results, the school has committed to:

amend the current creed, as in the example provided in the survey, by the start of the 2019 school year as an interim measure

develop and adopt a new creed that reflects the school values in consultation with the school community through the Positive Learning Behaviour framework which is a whole school approach for creating a positive, safe and supportive school climate in which students can learn and develop.

Quote of the week: You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives.

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program It was so lovely to see many past students of the SAKGP enjoying a visit to the garden while at the Family Fun Fair. There were also many families who came to enjoy the tranquillity of the garden during the evening, admiring the herbs and vegetables that our Year 4 students have planted and nurtured over the year. The children delighted in visiting the chickens who, in turn, enjoyed all the attention. A lovely lady who visited our garden purchased three tomato plants and left them in our care while she wandered around the Family Fun Fair. Unfortunately, she forgot to come back and collect them so we have been caring for them until her return. If they are your tomato plants please call the school and we can arrange to get them to you. A few weeks ago we were sorry to lose Midnight, our black chicken, due to old age. However, the Johnston family have generously donated two new chickens that have settled nicely into our chicken coop. We would like to thank you for this wonderful donation. The chickens have been cared for by the students of 4CCB who have named the black bantam “Bolt” and the speckle bantam “Passionfruit”.

Yarning Group

We would like to establish a Yarning Group here at Albury Public School to create a community of support for our Aboriginal students and their families.

All interested members of our school community are warmly invited to join us, meet new and old friends and have a cuppa and yarn next Thursday 6 December from 2-3pm in the staff room.

We would value your input to our discussions about the future of Aboriginal education for all students at Albury Public School and strategies to support the learning and wellbeing of our Aboriginal students.
