Well done to all students for qualifying for the carnival. Results will be announced next week. Even though it feels as though we have just returned to school, we are swiſtly moving through the term. I have included some save the datesfor your diary and to give you early noce of what is coming up. Further informaon will be provided closer to the dates so please keep an eye out for the newsleer and the website. Parent teacher interviews: Last week we held our parent informaon evening. Individual parent/teacher interviews will be conducted in Week 10 (week beginning 1 April). The students will be seng goals in relaon to their learning and other areas of their schooling, in classes this term. These will form the basis of the conversaons between parents and class teachers. Details will be forwarded shortly about how to book in for a meeng with your childs class teacher/s. Coffee and cake: Our first coffee and cake session for this year will be held on Wednesday 27 March. Posive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) will be one of the topics of discussion. The session will commence at 10:00am. Further details will be disseminated shortly. Students arriving before 8:30am: Just a reminder to any students arriving at school before 8:30am that they must sit quietly outside the gym. Supervision is not provided prior to the 8:30am bell so all students are asked to go directly to the gym with their bag and sit under the awning outside the gym and read or converse with peers. For safety reasons there are to be no games or running around unl the 8:30am bell. Aſter the bell students may place their bags in class lines. Special Religious Educaon (SRE): Albury Public School has negoated delivery for SRE in 2019. A leer offering parcipaon (opt in) to SRE was sent home this week and needs to be returned as soon as possible to facilitate organisaon for a start in Week 6 of this term. A message from the Principal

Week 4 Term 1

Today, our representative swimming team and accompanying staff attended the zone swimming carnival at Albury Swim Centre. Well done to all students for qualifying for the carnival. Results will be announced next week. Even though it feels as though we have just returned to school, we are swiftly moving through the term. I have included some “save the dates” for your diary and to give you early notice of what is coming up. Further information will be provided closer to the dates so please keep an eye out for the newsletter and the website.

Parent teacher interviews: Last week we held our parent information evening. Individual parent/teacher interviews will be conducted in Week 10 (week beginning 1 April). The students will be setting goals in relation to their learning and other areas of their schooling, in classes this term. These will form the basis of the conversations between parents and class teachers. Details will be forwarded shortly about how to book in for a meeting with your child’s class teacher/s.

Athletics carnival: The school athletics carnival will be held on Thursday 21 March at Alexandra Park in Albury. Students have commenced training during sport sessions and a mini carnival/s will be held prior to the athletics carnival.

Major excursions: This year, Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will participate in overnight excursions and/or sport and recreation camps. These major excursions and camps are planned learning experiences designed to enhance understanding of the units of study and to provide the authentic context for the themes of study. Throughout the experiential learning process, the learner is actively engaged in posing questions, investigating, being curious, solving problems, assuming responsibility and constructing meaning, and are challenged to take initiative and make decisions.These opportunities also provide additional benefits to the student’s personal growth and development. These experiences are not designed to be “vacations” for the students but opportunities to develop resilience, take personal responsibility and forge tighter bonds within the classroom. They give teachers an opportunity to get to know children in a different environment outside the classroom [and] quality teaching is based on really strong, positive relationships. A lot of team building happens. This is the “hidden” benefit of major excursions and camps and extend well beyond the planned itinerary.

Year 4 major excursion: Borambola Sport and Recreation Centre, 1980 Sturt Highway (via Wagga Wagga) from Wednesday 1 May – Friday 3 May 2019. An expression of interest form has been sent home and interested students need to return the EOI and a $100.00 deposit to secure a place, by Wednesday 27 February 2019. The final costs will be determined by the number of students attending and will range from $300 - $320.00 which includes bus travel, accommodation, all meals and activities. The $100.00 deposit can be paid online. Please record the receipt number and return to the school by the 27 February.

Year 6 major excursion: Canberra on Wednesday 15 May – Friday 17 May 2019. Expression of interest notes were sent home last week and should be returned by Tuesday 26 March 2019 to secure a place, along with a deposit of $100.00. The total cost of the excursion will depend on the number of students attending and will be approximately $380 - $400, for all travel accommodation, meals and activities/entrance fees. The deposit can be paid online. Please record the receipt number and return to the school by 26 March.

School performance: This year, the school is working towards a school performance. This will include all classes in the school. Teachers and students will be working on their performances during stage based music activities. If you can assist in any way with the performance, either directing, coaching, the technical side, etc, please contact Sally Morris at the school. Your expertise, experience and assistance will be very greatly appreciated.

The library program focuses on literature and information skills.

All classes K-6 have a set library session.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL): What are our Values?

By now, most of you would know that we are starting our journey with Positive Behaviour for Learning. The first step is to develop our school's Values, and we will need your input. All NSW Public Schools operate under nine values these are; integrity, excellence, respect, responsibility, cooperation, participation, care, fairness and democracy. When recently surveyed the staff identified the additional values of resilience and inclusion. This term, during weeks 4 to 8, we will be teaching students about these values. We will get input from the students by 21 March. We will also be sending out a survey for parents and carers to complete. Our aim is to identify three to five values which best represent the culture of our school community. We invite you to discuss these 11 values with your child during the next few weeks. Please look out for more information regarding the survey later in the term. Here are some of the values students and teachers will be exploring this week: Integrity: Being consistently honest and trustworthy. Excellence: Striving for the highest personal achievement in all aspects of schooling and individual and community action, work and life-long learning. Respect: Having regard for yourself and others, lawful and just authority and diversity within Australian society and accepting the right of others to hold different or opposing views. P.B.L. P&C Canteen News Hello Albury Public School People,

We have added an extra item to our Gluten Free menu. Creamy Potato Bake for $4.00, available any

day other than Friday when GF chicken burgers are on offer!

We also have a GF and Dairy free potato bake option for $4.00

Look out for next weeks window special………..bacon and egg rolls for $1.00, available at lunch and

recess. Not available online, over the counter sales only.

Don’t forget , 20c frozen yoghurt or juice cups at lunchtime and recess. These are extra good for the

kindergarten kids on a hot day

If you have been thinking of volunteering now is the time to do it. Even 30 minutes in the mornings to

It really is a fun environment to be part of and all our volunteers are deeply appreciated.

Albury P&C Meeting - Tuesday 26 February, 7:30pm The Albury Public School P&C (Parents & Citizens) will hold its first meeting of the year on Tuesday 26 February. You are all welcome to come along. We hold meetings in the staffroom at the school at 7:30pm. We have a joining fee of $1 for the year, to be paid prior to the AGM, if you want to be able to vote at the AGM. The AGM will be held Tuesday 26 March, where we will be calling for nominations for President, Secretary, Treasurer and other important positions we need to fill. FREE – Parenting Program

Tuning into Kids – is a five week parenting program that supports

parents to become more aware of their child’s emotions and its

impact. Parents learn how to develop an ability to label and

understand their child’s emotions and how to support their child in

learning to regulate these emotions. Parents are therefore able to use their children’s

emotional experiences as an opportunity for connecting, teaching and problem solving.

Apply for a Creative Kids voucher

The NSW Government is helping kids get creative with the new Creative Kids program. Parents, guardians and carers can apply for a voucher with a value of up to $100 per calendar year for each student aged 4.5 to 18 years old enrolled in school. The voucher may be used with a registered activity provider for registration, participation and tuition costs for creative arts, speech, drama, dance, digital design, coding, and music lessons and activities. The voucher can be used at any time during the calendar year it was issued. To use the voucher, give the details to your registered activity provider. The program runs year-round, so kids can get creative at any time. Apply at https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-creative-kids-voucher

The 2019 Lake Hume Cycle Challenge is on this Saturday morning, 23 February, starting and finishing at Wodonga Racecourse. As part of the event there are some shorter op-tions well suited to families and children, 5km or 25km riding along the river. The Primary Schools Challenge is part of the event. If you are entering please include the name of our school as the Corporate Team Name so we are in the running for the trophy, which we have previously won. Should be a great day and perfect lead in for Ride2School in a few weeks.

SAKG

Welcome to the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. This hands on program has been operating at Albury Public School for the past five years. The program introduces pleasurable food education to children during their learning years, in order to form positive food habits

This year the garden at SAKGP area was suffering badly from the extreme heat over the summer break. It has been a big job for all our Year 3 and Year 4 students, 3/4CM, 3/4CT, 3/4CF, 3/4CS and

3/4CH, to get our garden in top condition for the new vegetables, herbs and seedlings. They have been very busy and enjoying getting their hands dirty by turning over the garden beds and compost bins ready for the lovely soil to go back into the gardens.

Our lovely chickens were very lucky to have had a holiday at a farm near Burrumbuttock. Thank you to Heidi Johnson and her family for taking such good care of our chickens. They are back at school and laying plenty of eggs.

In the kitchen all students have been learning the very important kitchen rules and how to work safely and respectfully. They learnt the importance of how to hold a knife correctly using the

knife handling techniques of “bear claws” and “bridge” when chopping, dicing and slicing, securing the chopping board with a damp cloth is very important. They have also made some wonderful dishes already with our favourite recipes of Basil Pesto and Indian Flatbread. If you would like to volunteer to help out in any way please don’t hesitate to leave a message at the APS office so we can contact you.
