New Year’s baby comes bright and early
Mackenzie Bingham naps in her mother’s arms at West Coast General Hospital on Jan. 2.
KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Mackenzie Bingham was born at 7:25 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
Not due for almost another week, she was determined to be West Coast General
Hospital’s first baby of the year.
She entered the world at 6 pounds, 11 ounces.
“She wasn’t due until Jan. 6,” said her mom Meghan Salidas. This is her and Brandon
Bingham’s second child.
Their first is Miles, 19 months.
The baby came so fast that her dad Brandon Bingham almost missed her.
The couple, who
live in Ucluelet, were staying at Bingham’s cousin’s house here in Port Alberni.
When Bingham heard that Salidas was going into labour, he rushed to the hospital.
The only problem? When he asked
where Salidas was, he was told she wasn’t there yet.
“I asked where Meghan was and they said they didn’t have a Meghan,” he said.
Bingham started to drive back to the house and passed an ambulance.
“I just thought oh that must be her,” he said.
He rushed back to the hospital and got
there just in the nick of time.
“I almost missed her. She was born three minutes later. It was just the best New Year’s ever.”[email protected]

So it’s 2016; a new year. So much to do. But there is so little time left, as one realizes as one gets older. For me the New Year is a time to think about what outdoor things I haven’t done on this incredible Island, and incredible valley. And it means a little planning, including finding the routes up mountains I intend to hike, making sure my equipment is in good shape, buying new stuff if necessary and so on.
One of the items at the top of the list is to try kite boarding. For me it would mean finding a kiteboard to use, a wet/dry suit and someone willing
to show me the ropes. Having done water skiing and downhill skiing using rope tows to get back up the hill, as well as some sailing, I think it would be something that I could learn fairly quickly.
One mountain I have never been up to the top of is Mount McQuillan.
The best access to it is through the community watershed. And so it is behind a locked gate to protect the security of the water.
But most years the Outdoor Club schedules a trip up the mountain. And being a club the wardens of the key are more likely to give it to them. So that will be the best option for me to get up there.
There is some interesting history around this mountain. There are a number of old abandoned mines in the area that are well over 100 years old. McQuillan is the name of an early resident of Alberni.
Nearby, there are
natural meadows below Douglas Peak. They are commonly referred to as Grassy Mountain. This is where the first skin was collected of the Vancouver Island Marmot. The biologists were so keen collecting specimens of a new mammal, that they wiped out the colony by shooting 12 of them. They never bred there again.
One of the most beautiful mountains to hike they say is the 5040. It provides a 360-degree view of the ruggedness of Vancouver Island. When I hiked to the top of Mount Klitsa, I thought that was a
pretty fantastic view. The view from this mountain is supposed to be better. The name comes from the height of the mountain in feet. Now, it wouldn’t sound as good if you called it Mount 1536. It is pretty easy to research the access on line, and there are a couple of different routes. In the past, the folks in the Outdoor Club have ribboned and brushed the route.
Another mountain I have never been to the top of is Mount Joan. At 1557 metres, it is the highest peak of the Beaufort Range. Apparently Mt Joan was named after
Joan Moorhead, a daughter of one of the partners who cleared the railway line into Alberni. Nearby is Mount Hal, named after her brother.
From the top of this one you have a superb view of the entire Alberni Valley, as well as the Georgia Strait, or Salish Sea. Although I’ve heard that people have accessed the peak from the west side it is most commonly climbed from the east side of the range.
That will require me to drive around to Qualicum Bay and go in on the Horne Lake road and up the upper Qualicum River to the Cook Creek Road.
There is one falls I would dearly like to get into one day too. It is located in the headwaters of the Nahmint River. I’ve only seen it from afar on my way up Klitsa. And it was spectacular. Perhaps you’ve seen the Youtube video of it by Heart of Vancouver Island. It is truly a spectacular place. I may need a little bushwhacking to get there, and to ford the Nahmint. Brrr! I’ll have to ask around.
But in the meantime I’ll just sit here relaxing by the fireplace insert having a cup of hot chocolate and dreaming of summer adventures.
Reflections on the bucket listSandy McRuer gazes over the mountains surounding the Alberni Valley while dreaming of new horizons to explore.

A leading automobile dealer located
in Port Alberni is over stocked with used car inventory and will be selling used cars and trucks for as low as seventy-seven dollars and up, this Saturday Jan 9th, 2016, rain, snow or shine. Will Pulford, Dealer Principal of Pacific Chevrolet Buick GMC, has just announced plans to hold the annual event with used cars and trucks starting at seventy-seven dollars and up this Saturday January 9, 2016.
"This will be the third seventy-seven dollar sale we have had. Our customers have been asking us for the last month when is the sale. Due to current market conditions, we have an extra amount of used cars, trucks and lease returns. Now we need to reduce the number of cars and trucks in our used car inventory. During this seventy-seven dollar sale every used car and truck will be sold for hundreds to thousands below the original price," Pulford said. "Our customers should
find these prices as low as auction prices in many cases. Here, every used car and truck is on sale. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE AND NO BIDDING. It's the perfect opportunity to get a good quality used car at the lowest price possible, including cars for only seventy-seven dollars."
All cars and trucks will be on display at 3800 Johnston Road, Port Alberni at 8:30am on Saturday, January 9, 2016. All vehicles will be opened so that buyers may inspect the vehicles for half an hour before the sale begins at 9:00am. Whoever is sitting behind the wheel at 9:00am when the prices are SLASHED on the windshield will be given the first opportunity to purchase the vehicle at the SLASHED sale price. This innovative approach to selling used vehicles will make it easy and quick for anybody in the market for a good used car at a very low price with no hassle. "We have business
managers who will help buyers arrange low-cost financing, as well as bank representatives that will be present. We've got over a million dollars in used inventory to choose from. Our total inventory is well over 200 cars, trucks and suvs. We want to remind everyone this is a one-day sale only. When our inventory has been reduced, we will remove the sale prices and return to normal operations. Since we are a local business, we would like to give back to the community," Pulford said. "We would rather allow local people to buy these vehicles than wholesale them at auction."
Any questions can be directed to 250-723-3541. Pacific Chevrolet Buick GMC Ltd opens at 8:30am on Saturday, January 9, 2016 and the sale starts at 9:00am SHARP! Buyers must be 18 or older with valid driver's license.

ord Johns and Scott Fraser both want to recognize the Ahousaht First Nation for its role in rescuing survivors of the Leviathan II sinking.
Johns, the Courtenay-Alberni MP, and Fraser, the Alberni-Pacific Rim MLA, are also on board with something more tangible. Johns is eager to read recommendations by the Transportation Safety Board once it completes its Leviathan II investigation.
In his first address to the House of Commons, he raised the dramatic Oct. 25 sinking off Tofino and the subsequent rescue of 21 whale watchers.
“Fishermen from Ahousaht First Nation were the first to arrive on the scene and began pulling survivors from the frigid waters,” he told fellow MPs.
Others, including members of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and
Tofino residents, rushed to the scene to help. They provided temporary shelter for those lucky enough to survive.
As he should, Johns particularly praised residents of the village of Ahousaht, where unemployment is as high as 70 per cent, for contributing $5 and $10 bills to buy gas for boats so the search for survivors could continue.
Fraser, who spoke in the provincial legislature about the matter, is on the same page as Johns. “The Nuu-Chah-Nulth are of the sea,” Fraser said in an interview. “They’re on the water all the time. This is not the first incident where they’ve been instrumental in saving lives.”
In 2013, an Ahousaht resident in the community of 1,400 was the first on the scene when a floatplane crashed off the coast near Tofino.
Fraser said he’s read accounts of Nuu-Chah-Nulth people risking their lives to save others on sailing ships shipwrecked as long ago as two centuries in the “graveyard of the Pacific.”
“We know that local and traditional knowledge saves lives,” Johns stated forcefully in a reply to the recent Liberals’ Throne Speech. “The federal government needs to stop closure of Comox MCTS, reopen Tofino MCTS in Ucluelet, and invest in local knowledge to support and improve Canada’s Coast Guard.”
He has met Fisheries Minister Hunter Tootoo and has begun to cultivate a relationship with the Nunavut resident, who is responsible for the Coast Guard.
At the least, medals should go to the heroes who risked their lives while braving the capricious Pacific to save imperilled whale watchers.
The government should consider funds to train the Ahousaht people, perhaps even establishing a maritime rescue training centre there in consultation with the band.

14 on Vancouver Island. His column about B.C. and federal politics will run every two weeks in the Alberni

To Comment
It’s become a go-to phrase for all levels of government – local, provincial and federal. When faced with fallout from an unpopular decision – or simply dissatisfaction with the way that a
certain sequence of events shakes out – politicians and bureaucrats seem to all have the same default position: “In hindsight, we could have done a better job with communication.” While this would beg questions about all the communications officers drawing publicly funded salaries across the land, the public’s patience grows wearier each time this particular communication is used. The fact is, no matter how large or
small the public-relations budget, a culture that keeps taxpayers in the loop on evolving decisions is something that comes from the top down. So is a culture that, through an absence of information or condescending announcements only once a decision has been made, leads taxpayers to
suspect they are being governed in an unresponsive, dictatorial manner, and, more than likely, misled. Suspicion of politicians and bureaucrats runs so rampant these days that it is far from wise policy for anyone in government to allow such a situation to continue – particularly when much criticism could be averted simply by taking a more inclusive approach. Too often, it seems, a craven fear of criticism only guarantees it will take place.

PAACL INFANT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMTechnology – Is it a benefit or harm to your child’s development?
We live in the age of technology. We are endlessly connected to each other through Facebook, cell phones, email, etc. Technology is a part of today’s reality. Everywhere we turn, we are surrounded by devices that have enhanced our work place, sped up the way we are able to connect with others and expanded our entertainment avenues. We are able to do so many things with technology, but it can come with a cost. Technology can interfere with the interactions we have with others, especially between parent and child. Setting limits on how and when we use technology is important for your child’s development. Spending time having quality face to face interactions with parents is essential for the bond between a child and their parents. A secure attachment to parents is what is important in order for infants and children to have a sense of emotional well-being and to develop to their potential.
The Canadian Pediatric Society recommends that children under the age of 2 should not be exposed to any screen time whatsoever, and that screen time should be limited to one hour maximum for children 2 to 4 years. Even though things on screens are interesting, children learn from real life interactions. Remember that the connection with you, seeing your face, watching your expressions, hearing your voice as you give your child feedback, can never be replaced by any piece of technology. The best interactions are always the ones that involve you. Limit screen time, have face to face conversations and encourage your child’s active play. When your child is actively exploring their world and playing, they using their hands and limbs and developing their problem solving skills as well as their fine and gross motor skills.
For more information about this topic, you can visit www.zonein.ca or contact one of the Infant Development or Supported Child Development Consultants.
The Infant Development Program is a free service offered to families and caregivers to consult with them on their child’s development from birth to age three. IDP consultants work with families to optimize a child’s development, learn ways to help their child progress and learn more about supports and services available to them in the community. Parents can directly refer to the program by calling 778-421-4404 and accessing Carol Hamilton Line, #1 and/or Angela Schomburg Line #2
The IDP program offers a Parent and Tot Group on Mondays from 11am to 1pm in the Strong Start Room located at Alberni Elementary School located at 4645 Helen St. and on Thursdays from 12:30 to 2:30 pm in the Strong Start Room located at E.J. Dunn Elementary School located at 3500 Argyle Street…Everyone Welcome!

KRISTI DOBSONSPECIAL TO THE NEWS
A group of no less than 40 youth have been spending Saturday nights for the past year learning to swing dance, thanks to a local dance enthusiast. The group celebrated the end of the year with a formal masquerade ball on Saturday, Dec. 12, an event that would not have been possible without a team of leaders and the support of the community.
Ezra Tsai picked up
swing dancing in the fall of 2014 while in Vancouver attending university, but in 2015 returned to Port Alberni for a career opportunity. It was in Vancouver that he became interested in swing dancing and spent many nights learning at a couple of clubs.
When he returned to Port Alberni last February, he was asked to teach for a fundraiser. That turned into something larger than he expected. He received
so much interest from his peers and other youth that he set up Harbourside Swing.
“It hit a vacuum and then exploded right from the start,” Tsai said.
“Almost instantly we had 30-plus youth come out. As it grew, it continued to pick up momentum.”
Originally the club attracted teens from the high school who attended lessons and the social every second Saturday night. Now all ages are interested in dancing
every week.“The leadership
team and I are looking at solutions to address the large interest from different ages and are contemplating whether splitting the club some nights is possible,” he said.
Open to all levels, Tsai brings a mix of different dance styles to the floor. He said he likes to modernize different moves from east coast swing, country, jive and salsa.
“I use music from the big band era, jazz and modern so it is a fusion between music and dances from eras of the past,” he said.
A typical evening starts with 45 minutes of lessons and then the floor is open for social dancing.
“Sometimes I throw in games or special
dances for birthdays or celebrations,” Tsai said.
The masquerade ball was his largest event with over 90 people in attendance.
“It started as an idea, just a dream,” he said. “From there we started fundraising in August.”
Tsai said the club has become more
than just something to do on Saturday nights and has become an inclusive group of close-knit friends and family.
“It is a good alternative for youth on the weekends and the dancers see it as a family and a community of acceptance,” he said.
His goal is to help
serve all ages and promote the club’s close knit community at the same time.
“I want to keep youth engaged and this gives them something to be happy and excited about,” Tsai said.
For more information, Tsai has a Harbourside Swing group on Facebook.

Klitsa Doors
Love of woodwork leads to construction then Klitsa DoorsDarin Kozlowski was born and raised in Port Alberni,
“I grew up with a love for this town. I’ve always loved working with wood since junior high school which led me on a path of construction. Out of high school, I went directly to Malaspina College. It was a 10 month program in residential housing and construction. I got a job with Van Isle Construction here in Port Alberni and was able to get my apprenticeship through Don Anderson. After many years in the field I became a Red Seal Journeyman Carpenter and I started my own business. Being self-employed for 8 years and having a minimum of 4 people working for me I was able to apprentice many of them as well.”
“When the previous owners of Klitsa Doors decided to retire, I thought it was a perfect fit to transition into. I believe we need a quality door shop that will sell, service and install. I got out of contracting and my main focus is on doors. With my experience in con-struction I strive to give quality work and products for the best price I can.”
“I am married with two children and I love all that
Port has to offer and that is why I choose to call this home.”
“I am a member of the Kinsmen club of Port Alberni and on the board of the Alberni District Fall Fair and have been since the late 90’s. I look forward to serving this community for many years to come and to helping you choose the right product for your job!”
