Caring For Those Who Served Their Country (NAPS)—A program designed to provide the best possible care for veterans also offers rewarding job alternatives for expe- rienced nurses. The VA Travel Nurse Corps Program is a VA-operated internal pool of registered nurses who are available for temporary short-term assignments at VA centers throughout the country. While taking part in the program, VA Travel Nurses are compensated for their time and travel and receive per diem allowances that include lodging, meals and incidentals plus the opportunity to see the country. RNs are compensated for hours worked but do not earn sick or vacation time or retirement programs. “The program offers nurses an opportunity to maintain high standards of patient care, helps decrease turnover of newly recruited nurses and offers alterna- tives for experienced nurses considering leaving the VA system,” says Program Director Jacqueline Jackson. It is hoped that the program will reduce the use of outside supplemental staffing, improve recruitment of new nurs- es into the VAsystem and deliver VA health care in rural or underserved areas. The program also hopes to establish a potential pool of registered nurses for national emergency preparedness efforts. RNs are selected from the VA and the private sector. Nurses new to the VA receive training on the special needs of veterans, the system’s procedures and policies, as well as medication administration and the VA’s computer sys- tem. Nursing can be both challenging and rewarding wher- ever you work but the VA program offers special rewards. “As I start the IV on an 85-year- old hero, his eyes grow soft as he men- tions his tour of service in India and Burma,” said RN Brenda Joyce Gupton. “This veteran carried our colors to another continent for freedom’s sake. It was my privilege to be his nurse.” The program was launched as a joint effort between theVA’s Integrated Service Networks, theVA’s Management Support Office and the VA Office of Nursing Services. “We are committed to making this program a win-win for all involved and to keep VA on the cutting edge of pro- viding the best care possible to our nation’s veterans,” said Jackson. (NAPS)—The Library ofCongress Veterans HistoryProject (VHP) is calling on allAmericans to make VeteransDay more meaningful for the vet-erans in their lives by recordingtheir memories of military ser-vice.

Preserving HistoryEstablished by the U.S.

Congress in 2000, VHP’s man-date is to collect, preserve andmake accessible the firsthandrecollections of America’s warveterans. Through a network ofvolunteers from across the coun-try, VHP has collected more than75,000 stories, of which morethan 10,000 have been digitizedand made accessible via VHP’swebsite, www.loc.gov/vets.

“Our goal is to help makeVeterans Day more meaningfuland personal for veterans andtheir loved ones,” said VHPDirector Bob Patrick. “What bet-ter way to do that than byrecording their war stories and submitting them to the Library ofCongress, where they will bepreserved for generations tocome,” he added.

A Free Guide Is AvailableStraightforward guidelines

in VHP’s Field Kit (a how-to-record-a-story booklet) show vol-unteers how to interview a veter-an for 30 minutes or longer whilerecording the conversation usingtheir own audio- or video-record-ing equipment. Next, volunteers

may send the original recording, along with VHP’s required forms,to the Library of Congress, where they are added to theLibrary’s permanent collections.

A profile page for eachveteran who shares a story withVHP appears onwww.loc.gov/vets four to sixmonths from the date VHPreceives the collection, and theprofile is accessible toresearchers, teachers, authorsand the general public throughVHP’s searchable online data-base.

The project also acceptsoriginal photographs, letters, mil-itary documents, diaries, journals, two-dimensionalartwork and un published mem-oirs.

A Meaningful ProjectNational organizations,

local groups and individuals, including students in grades 10and higher, are encouraged tomark the day with this meaning-ful volunteer project by interview-ing veterans within their ownfamilies or communities or bycollaborating with local veteransservice organizations to collectstories. For more information or torequest a VHP Field Kit, contactVHP at (888) 371-5848, [email protected] or visitwww.loc.gov/vets.

(NAPS)—It can beeasier to cope witha situation if youtalk to someonewho shares yourunique point ofview—and that’sespecially importantfor blinded veter-ans. To reach out toother blinded veter-ans and their fami-lies, six U.S. ArmedForces veteranswith out sightrecently traveled tothe UnitedKingdom.Project Gemini, a joint effort ofthe Blinded Veterans Associationand St Dunstan’s, took the veter-ans, four of them blinded inrecent combat operations, across the Atlantic Ocean for sixdays of educational exchangeand the sharing of friendship, knowledge and in sights with theirBritish comrades. The project obtained its namefrom the transatlantic telecom-munications cable that stretchesfrom England to the UnitedStates. Project Gemini createdan opportunity for blinded veter-ans to meet in a relaxed environ-ment and, formally and informal-ly, exchange ideas and viewsregarding the best ways to sup-port veterans who have lost theirsight. Subjects of discussion wererehabilitation and readjustmenttraining, vision research andadaptive technology for the blind. “During the week, we sharedhelpful hints about coping withblindness and the ‘war stories’that are part of the adjustmentprocess,” said Tom Zampieri, director of government relations

at BVA. “We compared theBritish veterans’ health care sys-tem with the American systemoperated by the Department ofVeterans Af fairs and its dozensof component medical centers, outpatient clinics and veteranshomes throughout the country.”Project Gemini is an outgrowthof Operation Peer Support, aBVA program begun in 2006 thatbrings together veterans ofrecent conflicts with those whohave lost their sight in Vietnam,Korea or during World War II.The program’s objective is toprovide Iraq and Afghanistan vet-erans and their families withexamples of and opportunities tointeract with men and womenwho have led happy and pros-perous lives de spite their blind-ness. Chartered by the U.S. Congressin 1958, BVA links veterans withthe services they’ve earned.Membership is open to all legallyblinded veterans who haveserved in the U.S. military.Membership is not required forveterans to receive assistance, which is free of charge. For moreinformation, call BVA at (800)669-7079 or visit www.bva.org.

(NAPS)—New research findsemployers not only value militaryexperience in job applicants, butthe skills veterans develop duringservice may give them an edge.

The research is particular-

ly timely, as the U.S. is committedto downgrading its military opera-tions and an increasing number ofwar veterans are finding they needconsiderable career guidance andtraining when they return home.

To expand the limitedresearch on success criteria formilitary personnel entering civilianca reers, the University of PhoenixRe search Institute surveyed hiringmanagers in diverse industries. The findings are published in thereport “Hiring Heroes: EmployerPerceptions, Preferences, andHiring Practices Related to U.S.Military Personnel.”

Veterans have, of course,al ways faced barriers when com-peting for and transitioning intocivilian jobs. In 2010, the Bureauof Labor Statistics reported thatreservists and National Guard -

members had much higher unem-ployment rates than civilians.

Today, however, many hir-ing managers are citing militaryexperience as a plus, saying vet-erans possess skills and attributesthat play well on the job. This isgood news for veterans who faceunique barriers including disabili-ties, poor transition assistance, concerns about calls to activeduty, and misperceptions abouttheir skills.

It is, in fact, military skillssuch as leadership and teambuildingthat

(NAPS)—The U.S. Department of Defense(DoD) has come up with a surprising wayto help keep this country safe—andimprove the economy and protect the envi-ronment at the same time.

Fueling this effort is, well, fuel;specifically, biofuel.

The ProblemThe military is a significant con-

sumer of fuel, which at present comesfrom oil. U.S. troops, their trucks, shipsand airplanes use close to 2 percent of thenation’s energy on an annual basis. Themilitary is therefore as much at the mercyof high oil and gasoline prices as are con-sumers. In recent years, the DoD spent about $16billion on fuel annually. Every dollarincrease in the price of a barrel of oil coststhe government about $130 million overthe course of a year.

A SolutionTo reduce vulnerability to oil

prices, the DoD intends to ac quire half itsenergy supplies from renewable sourcesthat meet U.S. greenhouse gas emissioninitiatives. This can not only save taxpayer dollarsand reduce our depen dence on foreign oil,but can also help makethis technology lessexpensive and more wide-ly available, just as theDoD did by being an earlyadopter of other technolo-gies, from the Internet toGPS.

What The Experts SayExplains Sharon

E. Burke, assistant secretary of defensefor Operational Energy Plans andPrograms at the De partment of Defense,“As we improve the energy security of ourarmed forces, the Department hopes tomake an important contribution to energysecurity for the whole nation.”

As Elizabeth King, assistant secre-tary of defense for Legislative Affairs, putit, “Our dependence on [fossil] fuelsdegrades our national security, negatively im pacts our economy and harms the envi-ronment. Significant developments inAmerica’s ad vanced biofuel industry holdpromise for meeting military needs.”

Adds Brent Erickson, executivevice president, Biotechnology IndustryOrganization, “Fuel efficiency and accessto fuel supplies are important ‘force multi-pliers’ because they increase the military’sability to operate where needed and canreduce the number of combat forces nec-essary to protect energy supply lines.”

Biofuels produced at small, strate-gically located biorefineries, many at theDoD believe, can best meet America’sfuture needs. Learn More

(ARA) - The U.S. Army has one of the largest comprehensive systems of healthcare in the country and offers physicians the chance to provide high-qualitypatient care without concern about the business side of running a practice. Armyphysicians often practice in diverse environments - from large hospitals in majorAmerican cities to rural clinics in third-world countries. These opportunities helpexpand their professional and leadership skills, regardless of where their careerstake them.

Biology lab to basic training

When student Allyson Fewell decided on a career in medicine, it wasbecause she knew she wanted to interact with people and serve humanity - twothings she felt she could not achieve working only in a lab.

But funding medical school presented a serious challenge. "I knew I did-n't want to take on $150,000 in debt. Then I heard that I should learn more aboutthe opportunities in military medicine," says Fewell. "Both my grandfathersserved in World War II and their experience sparked my interest in exploring theArmy."

The Army's F. Edward Hebert Armed Forces Health ProfessionsScholarship Program (HPSP) and loan repayment helps defray the cost of med-ical school, and financial rewards can exceed what professionals in some areaswill earn in the private sector.

After speaking with many people who also took the military route, Fewelllearned the Army would pay for her tuition and provide her with a livingallowance. In exchange, she would give four years of service, with the option ofstaying on after she met the service requirement. The call to service and herpatriotism were two very important, intangible reasons she joined the U.S. ArmyMedical Corps.

Now a captain in the Army and chief of medical residents at Brooke ArmyMedical Center in San Antonio, Fewell credits her success to all of the teachers, mentors and leaders who opened doors and helped her find the right career fit.

Last year, Fewell traveled to Haiti with a group of volunteer military doc-tors after the earthquakes there devastated much of the country.

Achieving a lifelong dream at 60

Not every career path is a straightforward one. In 1984, at age 34, Dr.Dore Gilbert, a dermatologist in Orange County, Calif., was in serious discus-sions with a recruiter about joining the Army Medical Corps.

But with young children and an established medical practice, he justcouldn't sign on the dotted line. Instead, he channeled his desire to be of serviceby sitting on his local school board for many years.

Years later, with all five of his kids out of college, his youngest joined theMarines and renewed Dr. Gilbert's interest in the Army. At age 60, he finallyjoined the Army Reserve.

"The camaraderie is the draw - and the sense of doing something impor-tant," says Gilbert. "It gives me the opportunity to help young men and womenwho are the best of the best. And being a reserve officer allows me to keep mypractice."

He received the rank of lieutenant colonel because of his years of clinicalpractice and quickly began training to pass physical training requirements (27 sit-ups in two minutes, 18 push-ups in two minutes and running two miles in 19 min-utes, 54 seconds). Surprising even himself, he surpassed each of these neces-sary benchmarks and began blogging about his experiences on an Army web-site, www.ArmyStrongStories.com.

After six months back home, serving one weekend a month, now it's offto Afghanistan. Gilbert's three-and-a-half month assignment overseas is to stabi-lize wounded Soldiers while they wait for surgeons. His experience as a derma-tologist will also help Soldiers return to the field faster as they will no longer needto travel to Germany for skin treatments he can address on site.

"It's a very high tempo base, and supporting the thousands of soldiers inthe brigade is exactly what I want to be doing at this stage in my career. TheArmy Reserve allows me to gain these great new experiences and do somethingmeaningful while knowing my practice is covered until I return home," saysGilbert. "And, according to the general, I am the oldest soldier in the brigade."
