LETTER FROM ALAINA BUDGET 2016 IN FUNDY ROYAL #WelcomeRefugees THE OTTAWA TEAM THE FUNDY ROYAL TEAM Dear Friends, I would like to begin by expressing to you that it is a true honour and a privilege to serve the residents of Fundy Royal. The messages of support that I have received since October 19 th have been very humbling and encouraging. Thank you so much for your support. I would like to extend my gratitude to the Honourable Rob Moore who worked hard for our riding over the last 10 years. We wish you the very best in your future endeavours and thank you for your service to all Canadians. As you all know, there is a lot for us to do in Fundy Royal and our team got right to work in the fall. This newsletter will give you a small glimpse of what we are doing both in the constituency and in Ottawa. We have been focused on meeting with constituents, community leaders, and a broad range of stakeholders across the riding in order to seek input on priorities and to guide our work plans. Economic development continues to be the top priority for our area. In addition to working directly with employers, we are also working on ways to support strong communities with infrastructure projects, housing for those with low incomes and for seniors, improving broadband internet service to rural areas, and supporting our youth through employment initiatives. As the completion of the Fundy Trail comes closer to reality, we are also looking at ways to increase tourism and support small businesses that will be positively impacted. In Ottawa, the Atlantic Canada caucus is focused on bringing a strong voice to Ottawa from our region and making sure that our specific challenges and the exciting opportunities in this area are a priority with our government. I am also honoured to serve our region by being a member of both the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food as well as Veterans Affairs. You are encouraged to contact my office or submit briefs to either of these committees. I would be pleased to hear your concerns and ideas. My staff and I are committed to diligently working for and partnering with you to improve the lives of everyone in our communities. I look forward to continuing to meet and partner with the people of Fundy Royal over the coming months. Together we will prove that “Better is Always Possible”. Canadians across the country have

welcomed Syrian refugees into their

communities with open arms, setting

an international example with their

response to the worst refugee crisis of

our time.

The Government of Canada is working

with other orders of government, non-

governmental organizations, partners

and Canadians across the country to

ensure that all refugees are successfully

integrated into their new host

communities.

Fundy Royal has welcomed several

families and they have already begun

to fit into our communities. Other

organizations are still waiting to

welcome families and I thank you for

your commitment, patience and

efforts.

As many have already done, I

encourage you open your hearts and

your homes to our new Canadians.

They are coming from a war-torn

country and your warmth will be truly

appreciated.

Alaina Lockhart, MP Fundy Royal

The 2016 budget was released

on Tuesday, March 22 and

contains many items that will

benefit Fundy Royal.

Canada Child Benefit

The new Canada Child Benefit will

be simpler, tax-free, better

targeted to those who need it

most and much more generous.

The Canada Child Benefit will

provide a maximum annual

benefit of up to $6,400 per child

under the age of 6 and up to

$5,400 per child for those aged 6

through 17. Families with less

than $30,000 in net income will

receive the maximum benefit.

Nine out of ten families will

receive more in child benefits

than under the current system.

With the introduction of a much

better-targeted Canada Child

Benefit, about 300,000 fewer

children will be living in poverty in

2016–17 compared with 2014–15.

Supporting Seniors

This budget will help to improve

the lives of seniors through an

increase on the Guaranteed

Income Supplement (GIS) for low-

income seniors and enhancements

to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP).

Eligibility ages for the Old Age

Security Program will also be

restored to 65 years.

Supporting Veterans

Budget 2016 proposes to hire

additional case managers to

reduce the client-to-case ratio and

increase service levels to help

veterans make successful

transitions to civilian life.

There are several financial support

changes for veterans in this

budget, including:

Increasing the Disability Award

for injuries or illnesses caused

or worsened by military service

Expanded access to higher

grades of the Permanent

Impairment Allowance

Increasing the Earnings Loss

Benefit to provide income

replacement

Increasing the estate

exemption amount for the Last

Post Fund

Employment Insurance The EI waiting period will be

reduced from two weeks to one

week effective January 1, 2017 to

reduce the burden on claimants

to make ends meet.

Service Canada will receive

increased funding to offer better

support to Canadians as they

search for new employment.

Meeting with the Prime Minister

In March, shortly after the closure of the PotashCorp Mine in Sussex, I met with the Prime Minister to

discuss the impact to the area. We talked about ways that the Federal Government could support the

area as we diversify the economy and build a road forward. I was pleased to see many of those

measures in the Budget 2016. Going forward, I will be continuing to work with all levels of

government, community stakeholders and business owners to ensure we are investing strategically to

stabilize this region’s economy.

Speeches in the House

Since October, I have had several opportunities to speak in the House of Commons on issues

important to Fundy Royal and Canadians. I have asked questions in the House concerning the impact

of Employment Insurance eligibility on employers in industries where seasonal work is a reality, how

the government is supporting vulnerable women in our society, and most recently how the

government will support traditional industries such as agriculture, forestry, and fisheries in today's

global marketplace.

I have also given statements on decorum in the House and recognized Roly MacIntyre for his

contributions to public service, commended constituent David Adams for his research in eradicating

Spruce Bud Worm, and congratulated Jim Hovey on his Volunteer Medal presented by the Governor

General.
