It has seen several dynasties come and go, absorbing the culture of each into itself. Historic towns like Khultabad, Pitalkore and Paithan lie scattered a few kilometers away. Aurangabad also has a 50,000-year-old meteorite impact crater, which has remained a lesser-known discovery. Aurangabad has a number of attractions like the famous Ellora and Ajanta caves.
