• Ask: “hink about young people currently in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting or Venturing."

• Now imagine same people 10 years in the futurewhat might they be doing, living, spending their time?

• On the back of the Aims and Methods sheet, 2-3 minutes to write down some qualities that today’s Scouts will, in the future, have gained from current Scouting experience

Some answers may be: - Self-motivation- High expectations- Focus- Interest in the outdoors- Technical Skills- Leadership ability- Citizenship

Discussion Continued...

Baden-Powell called Scouting A game with a purpose

• The aims = are Scouting’s purpose

– Help Scouts become better people

– Realize full potential as they move into their futures

• The “game” part is what we most often see...Young people taking part in:

– Outdoor adventures,

– Service projects,

– Meetings,

– Advancement.

• All these are the Methods that Scouting uses to guide its members towards worthwhile aims.

Discussion Continued...Underlying the aims and the methods of BSA is a ...

• Solid foundation of ideals the values upon which all of Scouting’ programs are built:– Cub Scout Promise and Law of the Pack– Boy Scout Oath and Law– Venturing Code and Oath

• Ask: "List on worksheet some specific ways each program of BSA brings to life the aims, ideals, and methods of Scouting."

• Encourage: "Share what you have written“

Facilitate a discussion:• Now I would like you to discuss how BSA’s aims and values relate back

to the young people you thought about at the beginning of this presentation and what about those not involved now, but who could gain from the BSA message.
