9th Grade

• Start becoming involved in clubs and leadership opportunities in and out of school in order to begin building the high school resume.

• If interested in applying to the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics as a 10th grader, attend the informational session on October 9th.

• Meet with Mrs. Withers to look at options for second semester courses and to begin planning 10th grade courses.

10th Grade

• Summer Ventures- A 5 week residential program located on one of five UNC system campuses that focuses on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. Students apply online. Applications are due January 31.

• Governor’s School- A 6 week residential summer program located at Meredith or Salem Colleges. 10th graders may apply for performing arts disciplines. Students must score in the 92nd percentile or higher on an EOC to be eligible to apply. Applications are due October 16.

• North Carolina School of Science and Math- Interested students should attend the information session at ELHS on October 9. Students may apply for entry in 10th grade. Applications are online and will be available October 15.

11th Grade

• PSAT/NMSQT- Juniors can qualify for recognition as a National Merit Scholar by taking the PSAT. National Merit awards are given typically to students with scores in the top 5% of the nation.

• Summer Ventures- A 5 week residential program located on one of five UNC system campuses that focuses on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. Students apply online. Applications are due January 31.

12th Grade

• Counselors will be visiting classrooms throughout the year to teach skills to students to help prepare them for college and careers. The following are topics that have been or will be covered.• How to electronically send high school transcripts to colleges

• How to interpret the high school transcript

• How to create an account and apply for college through CFNC

• Information on Gaston College classes, Governor’s School, and PSAT

• College Application Week

• Mental health awareness and bullying
