LAMP:  Overview  •  The  Learning  &  MigraKon  Program  (LAMP)  connects  children  of  migrant  workers  to  conKnuous

primary  educaKon,  prevenKng  them  from  dropping  out,  and  promoKng  age-‐appropriate  learning  •  By  2010,  the  program  had  reached  out  to  237,504  children  in  migra+on-‐prone  geographies  of

Maharashtra,  Gujarat,  Andhra  Pradesh  and  Orissa,  and  slums  of  Bihar

Why  LAMP?  India  ranks  127  out  of  177  countries  in  the  educaKon  index  of  the  United  NaKons  Development  Program  2007-‐08  Human  Development  Report.  In  a  2007  NaKonal  Council  for  EducaKon  Research  and  Training  study,  less  than  half  the  children  at  the  5th  grade  level  were  able  to  comprehend  at  a  grade  appropriate  level.        AIF’s  educaKon  programs  focus  on  increasing  access  to  educaKon  for  children  who  are  not  currently  in  school  and  improving  the  quality  of  educaKon  provided  in  schools.  The  programs  are  aligned  with  India’s  consKtuKonal  responsibility  to  provide  an  educaKon  for  all  children  up  to  the  age  of  14.      In  addiKon,  AIF  has  partnered  with  organizaKons  that  are  focusing  on  improving  educaKon  in  the  slums  of  urban  India.  These  programs  are  also  being  focused  on  educaKng  children  who  are  part  of  the  rapidly  increasing  rural-‐to-‐urban  migraKon  that  is  creaKng  an  addiKonal  strain  on  the  educaKon  infrastructure.
