PROJECT REVIEW1. Staff Exploration and Skill Building

• Competence and confidence with some Web 2.0 tools

• Relevance as pedagogical and teaching tools

• Two “streams” for project focus

• Each stream/group will spend a half day with Coby Beatson on each of the three full-day sessions for the project:

• Edmodo basics : implementing Edmodo with a class to support our work and that of our students

• Edmodo+ : Using Edmodo as a “starting point” for integration of other simple but powerful Web 2.0 tools (e.g. Netvibes, Wordpress, Stixy, Tag Galaxy, etc).

• Consideration of how Web 2.0 tools can enhance the existing unit

• Planning and preparation for implementation

• Specific focus/application is flexible based on various factors

• August 23rd is a planning day for your “projects”, with the support of technology specialist Coby Beatson (half day session at SS, in “project stream” groups)

Workshop 2:

Rolling out Edmodo with your class

Practical Considerations and Support

Edmodo Refresher…

Edmodo Class Rollout

• Parents and permission considerations

• Online safety, etiquette and literacy

• Getting things rolling – what’s worked for me

• Class rollout resource pack: http://www.edmodo.com/post/26258835

Page 10: AGQTP Leveraging Web 2 Workshop 2

Parents…• Parental permission is required in order for students to

use the site• Required by Edmodo• Professional responsibility

• Allow time for collection of forms prior to intro in class• Keep permission notes on file

• (Parent accounts – a possibility)

Page 11: AGQTP Leveraging Web 2 Workshop 2

Online Safety, Etiquette and Literacy• Establishing expectations regarding use

• Content• Language & Literacy• Behaviour• “Extension of the classroom…”

• “Student Blogging Guidelines”:http://ourspace.edublogs.org/student-blogging-guidelines/

• Options for discipline• Make “read-only”• Remove from group temporarily• Traditional approaches

Getting Things Rolling – Steps• Steps:

1. Create a class group.

2. Write your initial/introductory post.

3. Hand out parent letters and information.

Page 13: AGQTP Leveraging Web 2 Workshop 2

Getting Things Rolling - Accounts• Students: forgotten username or password

• You can look up their username• You can reset their password (with them present)

• Students can change their password in “Settings”.

• Students: already have an Edmodo account• They can log in to their existing account and “Join” your class

group with the code you supply.

Page 14: AGQTP Leveraging Web 2 Workshop 2

Getting Things Rolling – What Works• Create a student account for yourself – for demonstration

and your own familiarity.

• Use Edmodo yourself in class regularly, e.g: calendar, library, class notes and resources in posts, polls, etc.

• Plan activities in class where Edmodo is used frequently, where relevant.

• Consider making use of the Grade Book for some tasks.

• Be clear on expectations regarding student “checking in”.

The Power of Web 2.0: Embedding• Embedding: taking rich content from another site or

location and integrating it into your own site or resource

• Video clips, flash animations, online documents, pictures, audio/mp3 files, etc.

• Rich content you show in the classroom can be made available outside the classroom

• Can be used as a stimulus for scaffolding thinking in class (see Look to Learn)

Page 16: AGQTP Leveraging Web 2 Workshop 2

The Power of Web 2.0: Embedding• Steps:

1.Go to the source of the content you want to embed.

2.Locate and copy the “embed code”.

3.Create a new Edmodo message to your class, and click the “link” option below the message text.

Hands-On Activity:

• Set up one lesson that makes use of Edmodo (and perhaps Look to Learn) as an integral part.

• For example:• Look to Learn stimulus activity.• Embedded content for other purposes.• Student task or activity launched from Edmodo.• Providing relevant link/s to a site or web resource that is the focus

for a specific activity in class.• Use of Grade Book for students to submit completed tasks.
